Death of an Artist: Ana Mendieta and Carl Andre Split the Art World
BONUS EPISODE of 'All About Art': Preview of Death of an Artist: Ana Mendieta and Carl Andre Split the Art World Here’s a preview from a new podcast, Death of the Artist, that explores a tragedy in the art world. For more than 35 years, accusations of murder shrouded one of the art world’s most storied couples: Was the famous sculptor Carl Andre involved in the death of his up-and-coming artist wife Ana Mendieta? Host Helen Molesworth revisits Mendieta’s death, taking a closer look at how she might have fallen out of the window of Carl’s 34th floor New York apartment, and the following trial which has divided the art world since 1985. Artist Interview with Flora Bradwell
EPISODE 37 of ‘All About Art’: Artist Interview with Flora Bradwell In this episode, I sat down with Flora Bradwell, a London-based artist. This episode was actually recorded a few months ago, which is quite atypical for All About Art, but there was a reason for it. At the time, Flora was pregnant with her baby boy, who has since then not only been born, but has already attended a few exhibition openings and art events! I’m launching this episode to coincide with Flora’s exhibition ‘We’re gonna need a bigger boat’, with painters Lindsey Jean McLean, who has also been on All About Art (episode 29 linked here), and Sophie Knight. The show is opening on September 23rd 2022 and will be on view for that weekend on the Slash Arts Gallery Houseboat on Regent’s Canal - so do come if you’re in London! It’ll be great. FREE tickets here: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/private-view-were-gonna-need-a-bigger-boat-tickets-412929080997 In this episode, we don’t just talk about Flora’s pregnancy and the show on the boat. We talk about her experience at Slade, a well-known and well-respected art school. We also talk about her practice as a painter, sculptor, and filmmaker, how it has expanded into curatorial opportunities, artist residencies, and a project called Bad Art. Listen in to hear us talk candidly about all of this and more -  motherhood and an arts career, what it feels like to be at the beginning of a new chapter in life, and how juggling tons of creative projects can have an impact on an artist’s practice. Thank you Flora for coming on the podcast! Curating 'Surrealism and Magic' at the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, with Gražina Subelytė
EPISODE 36 of 'All About Art': Curating 'Surrealism and Magic: Enchanted Modernity' at the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, with Gražina Subelytė In this episode, I speak to Gražina Subelytė, Associate Curator at the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice, Italy. Gražina curated the exhibition showing during the 59th Venice Biennale which is titled 'Surrealism and Magic: Enchanted Modernity'. In this episode, we talk about her background and how she came to curate at such a renowned organization. We delve into the intricacies and processes of curating an extensive exhibition, and we also touch on the challenges of putting together a show like this one. Listen in to hear me ask Gražina about how it feels to contribute to the arts landscape during the Venice Biennale, and what advice she would give someone wanting to follow in her footsteps. 'Surrealism and Magic' gave such a rich overview of the Surrealist movement, and I loved that there was a particular focus on female artists, as well. I grew up loving Salvador Dalí, but now I think I love Leonor Fini a little bit more! Many thanks to the Peggy Guggenheim Collection for the collaboration, and, of course, to Gražina for coming on the podcast. Art Censorship: Part 2
EPISODE 35 of 'All About Art': Art Censorship PART 2!  In this episode, I continue the conversation from episode 15 of the All About Art podcast on the topic of art censorship. I use a particular example that involves the US, the UK, Germany and Austria. The case study I speak about is the "100 Years and Still Too Daring?" ad campaign by the Vienna Tourist Board for the Viennese Modernism retrospective with works by Austrian artist Egon Schiele. To further the discussion, I cover the Vienna Tourist Board's move onto the platform OnlyFans in 2021, which has become popular amongst creators that made adult content, along with the mixture of art and sex through the adult film website Pornhub's 'Classic Nudes' tours.  Here are my sources: https://www.theartnewspaper.com/2021/07/14/not-safe-for-art-work-pornhub-creates-classic-nudes-tours-of-museum-collections https://www.artnews.com/art-news/news/pornhub-classical-nudes-removed-1234601592/  https://www.theguardian.com/artanddesign/2021/oct/16/vienna-museums-open-adult-only-onlyfans-account-to-display-nudes  https://www.letseatcake.com/onlyfans-museums/ plus those in the shownotes of episode 15.  ABOUT THE HOST: I am an Austrian-American art historian, curator, and writer. A Black History of Art with Alayo Akinkugbe
EPISODE 32 of 'All About Art': Interview with Alayo Akinkugbe, founder of A Black History of Art In this episode, I had the joy of sitting down with Alayo Akinkugbe, the founder of an Instagram account that has been a game changer - Alayo founded A Black History Of Art in 2020 and she did so with the aim of providing a more diversified overview of art history when she realized that she hadn’t been taught about ONE black artist throughout her whole first year studying History of Art at Cambridge. The account has now amassed over 55 thousand followers, highlighting the overlooked Black artists, sitters, curators, and thinkers from art history to the present day. Within this episode, Alayo and I speak about her education at Cambridge and the Courtauld in London, but we also dig deep into how she feels that the account has affected her career. We also talk about her professional trajectory, and how what she has learned through her education in art history and curating, as well as her work within decolonizing the sector, has impacted what type of work she wants to do later on. Stay tuned to listen to Alayo and I get up close and personal with some deep-rooted issues in art and society, but also tune in to hear us talk about the hope we have for the sector, and how fun it can be. Artist Interview with Lindsey Jean McLean
EPISODE 29 of 'All About Art': Artist Interview with Lindsey Jean McLean In this episode, I sat down with rising star in the world of painting, Lindsey Jean McLean. Lindsey studied at the Glasgow School of Art, the Royal Drawing School, and then at the renowned Slade School of Fine Art. Her works question the historical representation of femininity and women in painting and she does this while depicting figures that exist in a space between portraiture and imagination, a combination of these. She uses recurring motifs such as feather boas, fans and veils that represent transformative objects which often obscure the viewers or the subject’s gaze in her works. In her words, she subverts the historically patriarchal medium of oil paint to dismantle and create a new space to view femininity. We chat about her artistic practice while she gives advice on how to work as an artist full-time as well as important things to do as an artist to collaborate and further your career. Gemma Peppé, Founder and Director of Art On A Postcard
EPISODE 28 of 'All About Art': Interview with Gemma Peppé, Founder and Director of Art On A Postcard Art On A Postcard was first launched in 2014 as a one-off secret postcard auction to raise funds for the Hepatitis C Trust, however, the response and popularity allowed it to continue multiple times a year, every year, since that first auction. These auctions offer postcard-sized works by phenomenal artists such as Damien Hirst, Grayson Perry, Marina Abramoviç, Patric Hughes, Gilbert and George, and Wolfgang Tillmans, to name a few. This episode coincides with their most recent auction, curated by gallerist and curator India Rose James and closing on April 21st, 2022. There are works on offer by the brilliant artists Olivia Sterling, Alma Barrow, Kristy M Chan, as well as Marc Quinn, and Courtney Love. Unlike all previous ones, this auction will not be raising money for the Hepatitis C Trust but instead will be donating the proceeds to Choose Love, a charity that supports Ukrainian refugees. Artist Interview with Aline Alagem (in collaboration with ARTPOWHER Contemporary)
EPISODE 25 of 'All About Art': Artist Interview with Aline Alagem (in collaboration with ARTPOWHER Contemporary) In this episode, I chat with artist Aline Alagem about her work and professional experiences. We chat about her paintings that are loaded with references to the female body, sensuality, sexuality, gender, and more. We also talk about upcoming projects and the lessons she’s learned in past ones. In Aline’s works, feminine sensuality is both a metaphor and a realization of manifesting one’s self. The compositions and collage-like altered scenes in her figurative paintings hint at hidden layers that flow beneath the surface. She states that moments of secret longing and pleasure are “planted” in frosty arctic landscapes, asking about the possibility and impossibility of reaching the edge of desire- becoming it, or being lost in it. What I love about her works is that they challenge the historical position of women as passive subjects, either of the male gaze or male longing. She says that female bodies no longer exist as vessels for others’ desires, but they become feeling, longing heroines creating their own story. Have a look at her works on her website: https://alinealagem.com/ and her Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/alinealagem/ This episode is in collaboration with ARTPOWHER Contemporary, a collaborative art project initiative that places focus on female-identifying and non-binary creatives in the arts. Founding an Art & Tech Startup: with Artscapy COO and co-founder Emilia De Stasio
EPISODE 23 of 'All About Art': an Interview on Founding an Art & Tech Startup with Artscapy COO and co-founder Emilia De Stasio Within this episode, I interview COO and co-founder of Artscapy, Emilia De Stasio about founding a startup that is by art collectors for art collectors and uses the combination of art and technology at its core. Emilia is an entrepreneur, startup investor and advisor, as well as speaker and expert panelist at technology and startup events. Building on five years as a financial analyst and published researcher at the European Central Bank and Moody’s Investors Service, she moved into the world of startups as an investment manager, investing in early-stage tech-driven startups across finance, advertising, VR, digital consumer products, and software solutions. Emilia is committed to giving back to the innovation ecosystem by mentoring founders at UCL, Startup Leadership Programme, and Eligent Accelerator (something she mentions later in the episode!). Emilia contributes a holistic business perspective as the COO of Artscapy, while having a very clear and tangible vision for how to democratize fine art collecting, by being an experienced collector herself.  Stay tuned to hear me chat to Emilia about the company and its mission, what the gaps were within the arts in terms of collecting and technology that needed to be filled, and what is needed if you want to scale a company within the arts. We touch on the important questions you need to ask yourself when speaking to investors as a founder, as well as personal topics such as what it was like founding a company with her husband, Alessandro. You can find out more about Artscapy here: www.artscapy.com Follow them on Instagram: www.instagram.com/artscapy and you can read my article on my top 5 picks from their marketplace: New Year, New Art - Collecting Art on Artscapy https://artscapy.com/page/view-post?id=123 ABOUT THE HOST: I am an Austrian-American art historian, curator, and writer. The Art of Framing with Gregory Baker
EPISODE 21 of 'All About Art': The Art of Framing with Gregory Baker  This episode focuses on a career in the arts that is very hands-on and is intrinsic to the transportation and display of works of art, namely FRAMING with London framer Gregory Baker. We chat about his business as an art framer and how he learned the craft. We also chat about materials he uses, such as various types of glass and how they affect a work of art, as well as his experience as an art technician at Sotheby's auction house which informs his practice today. Greg graduated from Central Saint Martins with a degree in Fine Art, and went on to work for Steward Heslop Frames and John Davies Frames in the years following his degree. He then proceeded to work for Sotheby's auction house and Alon Zakim Fine Art while starting his own business. He collaborated with Sotheby's and has framed works by the likes of Cy Twombly, Lucien Freud, David Hockney, Georg Baselitz, and Jenny Saville. He is currently working with artist and art dealer David Breuer-Weil, whose sculptures you probably know from St Pancras New Church at Euston, London, all the while maintaining his framing studio and furthering his craft. If you want to get in touch, you can email him at gregorybakerframes@gmail.com P.S. Listen past the outro to hear Greg give me my Christmas gift, which was very much in line with the episode! Such fun, thank you Greg. ABOUT THE HOST: I am an Austrian-American art historian, curator, and writer. MTArt: Being an Artist, with Walter & Zoniel
EPISODE 20 of 'All About Art': MTArt: Being an Artist, with artist duo Walter & Zoniel In this episode, I sat down with Walter and Zoniel, an artist duo represented by MTArt Agency. We talked about their art, which involves a multidisciplinary approach and often results in interactive and socially engaging installations. A central theme in their work is the sublime, but also the human condition through questioning our relationship with our surroundings. They work with different mediums by using nature or other tools such as handmade cameras or innovative printing techniques, which is also something we talk a bit more about later in this episode. Public art and accessibility are important themes for the duo, as they believe art is for everybody, so they enjoy creating pieces for the public domain. This episode is part of a special partnership with MTArt Agency, a certified B Corp® award-winning talent agency for the most exciting up and coming visual artists worldwide, and a creative agency that delivers exciting art-driven projects for brands, public bodies, and cultural organizations. EPISODE 17 of 'All About Art': Artist Interview with April Marten (in collaboration with ARTPOWHER Contemporary) In this episode, I chat to American artist April Marten about her work but also her life experiences, her family, consumerism, living in New York as an artist during covid, and so much more. April uses art as a channel for connection and critical thought. She analyzes how we form cultural identity through social pressures such as what we purchase, consume, and digest — whether they be material goods or ideas. Through the creation of art experiences and collectible works of art, April invites audiences to celebrate the spirit of sacred individuality that makes us human and ties us together.
