New Kids On The Block - Interviews with 5 Emerging Gallerists in London (Hew Hood, Helen Neven, Maribelle Bierens, Cedric Bardawil, & Jack Trodd)

New Kids On The Block - Interviews with 5 Emerging Gallerists in London (Hew Hood, Helen Neven, Maribelle Bierens, Cedric Bardawil, & Jack Trodd)

Episode 57 of ‘All About Art’: New Kids On The Block - Interviews with 5 Emerging Gallerists in London (Hew Hood, Helen Neven, Maribelle Bierens, Cedric Bardawil, & Jack Trodd)

In the past two years in London (2022 and 2023) we have seen a massive surge in small galleries opening across the city. Instead of interviewing one emerging gallerist about why they chose now to take the plunge and open their gallery, I had the opportunity to speak to 5 new gallerists in London.

I ask each gallerist 4 questions:

  1. Introduce themselves and say more about their gallery.
  2. What inspired them to open a gallery in London.
  3. What type of art the gallery strives to champion and how they have positioned themselves in the growing gallery landscape in the city.
  4. What is one thing they wish they could tell their younger selves when entering the sector as a gallerist.

I start off at [05:22] in North London to see Hew Hood at Hew Hood Gallery in Islington

At [17:35] I then went East to see Helen Neven at Neven Gallery in Bethnal Green

At [28:08] back down to Fitzovia is where I visited Maribelle Bierens at Night Cafe Gallery

At [38:20] to Soho to see Cedric Bardawil at his eponymous gallery up on the first floor of a building on Old Compton Street

At [48:46] I sat down with Jack Trodd who runs BWG Gallery, a nomadic gallery that had a home on 13 Soho Square right off of Oxford Street in 2023 but has conducted exhibitions all around London, north, south, east, and west, and will continue to do so in 2024.

You can find more information about each gallery here:

The Experience of Sitting for a Portrait - In the Studio with Beau Gabriel

The Experience of Sitting for a Portrait - In the Studio with Beau Gabriel

Episode 56 of ‘All About Art’: The Experience of Sitting for a Portrait - In the Studio with Beau Gabriel

This episode is a bit different because All About Art is a podcast all about demystifying the professional arts sector by speaking to amazing people in different roles in the arts - But I also love to do episodes that touch on various themes within the industry, and this time it’s more unconventional.

I recently went to visit Beau Gabriel, a London-based artist, in his studio to sit for a painting. This was my first time sitting for a painting and it was really fun to experience this while also taking my mics with me to record it for you listening in.

If you get bothered by background noise, I suggest you skip forward a tad because in the first 10 minutes, you can hear Beau prime his canvas and paint brushes while he me how to pose.

In a casual interview format, listen in to hear us talk about underpainting and pigments, what it feels like being a sitter, and so much more.

To set the scene a little bit while you listen, we were standing in Beau’s studio in East London with the natural light of a very cold Sunday in November. Beau had his easel set up and a monochrome pallet of oil paint to create the underpainting of my portrait. I was standing across from him with a chair in front of me on the back of which I was resting my hand, and I had a little space heater facing me to keep me warm because of what felt like freezing temperatures, quite typical for artist studios in London in the winter.

This painting will take a few more sessions to complete, so be sure to follow All About Art and Beau on Instagram to see it when it's finished. (linked below!)

Writing an Artist Biography: Discussing Pauline Boty with Marc Kristal

Episode 55 of ‘All About Art’: Writing an Artist Biography: Discussing Pauline Boty with Marc Kristal

In this episode, I sat down with Marc Kristal, who recently published the biography of British pop artist Pauline Boty. This episode and the book’s publication is concurrent to an exhibition of Boty’s works at Gazelli Art House in London.

Boty was born in South London, and in 1954, she received a scholarship to Wimbledon School of Art and then continued her studies at the Royal College of Art in the late 50’s. She worked across a variety of mediums that include painting, collage, and stained glass and was known for celebrating her womanhood and sexuality in an unapologetic and open way. She died at the young age of 28, and has been a lesser known member of the British Pop Art Movement in comparison to her male counterparts. Pauline Boty’s artwork is held in a few amazing collections, including The National Portrait Gallery and Tate Britain in London as well as the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington.

Thank you Marc for coming on the podcast! and to Quarto Publishing for the collaboration.

Curating Frieze Sculpture with Fatos Üstek

Episode 52 of ‘All About Art’: Curating Frieze Sculpture with Fatos Üstek In this episode, I sat down with Fatos Üstek. It was announced earlier this year that Fatos would be curating the 2023 Frieze Sculpture Park, a major annual public art exhibition that places monumental works by leading artists throughout London’s The Regent’s Park during Frieze Art Fair, one of the biggest art fairs in the world. Listen in to hear me ask Fatos about her background in Mathematics and how it influences her curatorial approach. We of course talk about Frieze Sculpture 2023, as well as other projects such as FRANK Fair Artists Pay, an initiative she launched this year with two artists. We delve into her ideas for new structures for arts organizations and what Fatos envisions for the future of the arts sector. I also ask her about the experiences she’s accrued being on the jury and in advisory roles for the Turner Prize, The Fourth Plinth, Jarman Film Award, and New Contemporaries (to name just a few!). A Critical Take on the National Gallery’s ‘200 Creators’ Call Out

A Critical Take on the National Gallery’s ‘200 Creators’ Call Out

Episode 53: A Critical Take on the National Gallery’s ‘200 Creators’ Call Out

Recently, someone left a comment on one of my Instagram posts. They asked ‘could you share your feelings on the National Gallery calling all content creators to celebrate the bicentenary? Many are calling the criteria unfair and as a professional in the art industry and as a creator, I’m curious how you feel about it’, which has now sparked the inspiration for this podcast episode.

In this episode, I take a critical stance on the recently announced call out from the National Gallery to create a network of UK-based digital creative influencers as part of its Bicentenary celebration called NG200. Applications have opened for digital creators to make ‘digital content’ which responds to the museum’s  collection, exhibitions, building, and day-to-day activities. Those selected will be named a Creative Collaborator, or will join the Gallery’s newly created 200 Creators Network.

The issue is… Applicants are asked to have a strong existing social media presence, with either a minimum of 50k subscribers on YouTube; 50k followers on TikTok and 1m likes on their account; or 100K followers on Instagram. The gallery said it wants to “collaborate with creators whose communities are interested in any number of topics, niches, and themes, and these don’t need to be based around art.”

Listen in to hear what I think is very cool about this, what the bad elements of it could be, where the National gallery may have taken a misstep, and my personal conclusion I have drawn from all of this.

Episode 51 of ‘All About Art’: Being Your Authentic Self in the Arts with Comedian and Art Critic Verity Babbs

In this episode, I sat down with art critic, comedian and presenter Verity Babbs. We speak about the topic of being your authentic self in the arts and why we often struggle with it in our sector. I ask her about Art Laughs, an initiative she founded that brings art-themed comedy events to museums, galleries, fairs, and cultural spaces.

Listen on to hear me ask Verity how she comes up with her jokes, why she thinks being authentic in the arts can be so tough, and in what ways neurodiverse contributors and audiences are instrumental in our sector. We also both open up on struggles surrounding mental health, with the arts providing an ever-growing workload and an ever-diminishing pay.

Episode 48 of ‘All About Art’: From Auction House to Gallery Director: Discussing Artistellar with Adele Smejkal

In this episode, I interview Adele Smejkal, Founder and Director of Artistellar Gallery. It started off as a nomadic gallery and online platform in 2020, dedicated to scouting UK emerging and early-career talents. The gallery now has a permanent space in London, where I will be hosting an event through All About Art in collaboration with Adele and Artistellar. You can book free tickets via Eventbrite here. Artistellar also started to represent artists and attend international art fairs in 2023. The gallery has a strong curatorial approach that heavily focuses on women artists, and has become known for scouting and identifying talented artists early on.

Listen on to hear me ask Adele what it was like starting her own business, and her approach on choosing artists to exhibit. We talk about the balancing act when curating shows and thinking about commercial viability. We also touch on her experience running her blog and garnering a large online following on social media, and how that has impacted her other professional endeavors.

Episode 47 of ‘All About Art’: Running an Arts Project Space with Penelope Kupfer, Director of Kupfer

In this episode, I sat down with Penelope Kupfer, director of the eponymous gallery and project space in Hackney, north east London. Kupfer functions as a platform for exhibitions and residencies. Opened in 2017, they have showcased the work of nearly 80 artists from different generations and geographies with a focus on those who are currently underrepresented in the London art circuit. Listen on to hear me ask Penelope about founding the project space and how it has developed since its inception. We talk about how her practice as an artist influences her work with Kupfer and vice-versa, so how collaborating with emerging artists and curators impacts her. We also touch on the topic of Motherhood, a huge theme for Penelope, and how important it is to engage in conversations around it.

Kupfer also hosted the 2nd anniversary celebration for the All About Art Podcast, which was filled with opportunities such as art-world speed networking and other fun games such as Jenga, reimagined for knowledge exchange. We also conducted panel talks and exhibition tours which took place over the span of three days this April.

Episode 46 of ‘All About Art’: Sustainability in Art with Caitlin Southwick, Founder of Ki Culture

In this episode, I sat down with the founder of Ki Culture, Caitlin Southwick. Ki Culture is an international non-profit working to unite culture and sustainability. They use “culture” as an all-inclusive term - from visual arts to heritage to performing arts, and that sustainability is used in a wide sense of the word- encompassing all three pillars, environmental, social, and economic. The company aims to redesign systems and rethink how and what we do to find solutions that will be better for the people, better for the culture, and better for the planet.

Listen on to hear me ask Caitlin about founding a nonprofit and the process of building it from the ground up. We talk about how important sustainability is and how we can do better in the arts sector. We also touch on finances and important projects Ki Culture is spearheading, along with stories about how she travels internationally in a sustainable way - and how that has led to some strange adventures!

Artist Interview with Stacey Gillian Abe (in collaboration with Unit London)

EPISODE 44 of ‘All About Art’: Artist Interview with Stacey Gillian Abe (in collaboration with Unit London)

In this episode, I had the joy of speaking to artist Stacey Gillian Abe. Stacey was born in Kampala, Uganda, in 1990. She received her BA in Art and Industrial Design from Kyambogo University in 2014. She has gone on to present her work internationally at museums, galleries, fairs and biennales. The episode coincides with her solo exhibition at Unit London on Hanover Square in London.

Within this episode, Stacey tells me about the works in the show and what inspires her practice. We chat about how she brings in autobiographical experiences and investigations of themes like identity, gender, and the Black Body. We also talk about the medium she uses, as she primarily uses paint but has encompassed hand embroidery in this series, which is a new element in her work.

The works evoke a strong relationship to the viewer but they also exert their independence from the viewer through the poses and gazes of each subject. The exhibition is on until January 27th 2023, so if you’re in London, I definitely recommend you go see the show!

Thank you Stacey for coming on the podcast and sharing your insights, and to Unit London for the collaboration.

EPISODE 43 of ‘All About Art’: Discussing 'Misogynageism' with Artist Fion Gunn

In this episode, I speak to artist Fion Gunn. She centers her practice around the desire to understand and analyze the extremity of human experience. She states that she is fascinated by the fundamental question: What does the experience of living mean for us both as individuals and as a global society?

We chat about Fion’s artistic practice and how she uses a variety of mediums including painting but also sculpture, augmented reality, and film. We then go on to discuss an incredibly prevalent issue within the arts: misogynageism. This term is one that was further explored in an interview with Fion in Artplugged written by art historian Verity Babbs. Tune in to hear us discuss it, and you can also read the full article here: https://artplugged.co.uk/young-gunn-fion-gunn-and-arts-misogynageism-problem/

EPISODE 42 of ‘All About Art’: Ministry of Arts Podcast Crossover with Gary Mansfield

This episode is a podcast SPECIAL, because it is a crossover episode with Gary Mansfield, founder and host of the MINISTRY OF ARTS podcast (so after you listen to me interview Gary here on All About Art, head over to his podcast here to tune in to him interviewing me!)

Gary has had quite the unconventional introduction to the art world. He came into contact with the arts during a 14-year prison sentence he was serving. Listen in to hear him tell me about what it was like to encounter the arts in that atmosphere, and how it impacted him. Gary is a practicing artist himself, so we also talk about his methods of making and what moves him to create his work. We chat about inclusivity in the arts, what needs to change, and how his nearly 200 episodes of interviews with various artists and cultural practitioners have influenced his view on the sector.

Thank you Gary for the collaboration, it was so much fun!

Artist Interview with Flora Bradwell

Artist Interview with Flora Bradwell

EPISODE 37 of ‘All About Art’: Artist Interview with Flora Bradwell

In this episode, I sat down with Flora Bradwell, a London-based artist. This episode was actually recorded a few months ago, which is quite atypical for All About Art, but there was a reason for it. At the time, Flora was pregnant with her baby boy, who has since then not only been born, but has already attended a few exhibition openings and art events!

I’m launching this episode to coincide with Flora’s exhibition ‘We’re gonna need a bigger boat’, with painters Lindsey Jean McLean, who has also been on All About Art (episode 29 linked here), and Sophie Knight. The show is opening on September 23rd 2022 and will be on view for that weekend on the Slash Arts Gallery Houseboat on Regent’s Canal - so do come if you’re in London! It’ll be great. FREE tickets here: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/private-view-were-gonna-need-a-bigger-boat-tickets-412929080997

In this episode, we don’t just talk about Flora’s pregnancy and the show on the boat. We talk about her experience at Slade, a well-known and well-respected art school. We also talk about her practice as a painter, sculptor, and filmmaker, how it has expanded into curatorial opportunities, artist residencies, and a project called Bad Art. Listen in to hear us talk candidly about all of this and more -  motherhood and an arts career, what it feels like to be at the beginning of a new chapter in life, and how juggling tons of creative projects can have an impact on an artist’s practice. Thank you Flora for coming on the podcast!

Curating 'Surrealism and Magic' at the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, with Gražina Subelytė

EPISODE 36 of 'All About Art': Curating 'Surrealism and Magic: Enchanted Modernity' at the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, with Gražina Subelytė

In this episode, I speak to Gražina Subelytė, Associate Curator at the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice, Italy. Gražina curated the exhibition showing during the 59th Venice Biennale which is titled 'Surrealism and Magic: Enchanted Modernity'. In this episode, we talk about her background and how she came to curate at such a renowned organization. We delve into the intricacies and processes of curating an extensive exhibition, and we also touch on the challenges of putting together a show like this one. Listen in to hear me ask Gražina about how it feels to contribute to the arts landscape during the Venice Biennale, and what advice she would give someone wanting to follow in her footsteps. 'Surrealism and Magic' gave such a rich overview of the Surrealist movement, and I loved that there was a particular focus on female artists, as well. I grew up loving Salvador Dalí, but now I think I love Leonor Fini a little bit more!

Many thanks to the Peggy Guggenheim Collection for the collaboration, and, of course, to Gražina for coming on the podcast.

Art Censorship: Part 2

Art Censorship: Part 2

EPISODE 35 of 'All About Art': Art Censorship PART 2!

In this episode, I continue the conversation from episode 15 of the All About Art podcast on the topic of art censorship. I use a particular example that involves the US, the UK, Germany and Austria. The case study I speak about is the "100 Years and Still Too Daring?" ad campaign by the Vienna Tourist Board for the Viennese Modernism retrospective with works by Austrian artist Egon Schiele. To further the discussion, I cover the Vienna Tourist Board's move onto the platform OnlyFans in 2021, which has become popular amongst creators that made adult content, along with the mixture of art and sex through the adult film website Pornhub's 'Classic Nudes' tours.

EPISODE 34 of 'All About Art': Interview with Tabish Khan a.k.a. London Art Critic

In this episode, I chat to art critic Tabish Khan. Tabish specializes in London's art scene and he believes passionately in making art accessible to everyone. He visits and writes about hundreds of exhibitions a year covering everything from the major blockbusters to the emerging art scene. He’s been a visual arts editor for Londonist since 2013, and he is also a regular contributor for FAD with a weekly “top exhibitions in London” column, as well as a column called 'What's wrong with art'. Tabish is also trustee of ArtCan, a non-profit arts organization that supports artists through profile raising activities and exhibitions.

EPISODE 33 of 'All About Art': Interview with Holly J. Black, Managing Editor of Elephant Magazine and Author of 'Artists on Art'

In this episode, I sit down with Holly J. Black, who published her first book 'Artists on Art' with Laurence King Publishing earlier this year. Holly has over eight years of experience editing and producing content across print and digital media, with excellent knowledge of the arts sector – from national institutions to contemporary galleries. She started off as Editorial Assistant of Art Quarterly, the magazine of the Art Fund, and has since then written for The Art Newspaper, Wallpaper* Magazine, Sotheby’s, and the Museums Journal to name but a few. She is now Managing Editor of Elephant, a leading arts and culture magazine that covers the international art world with a focus on emerging artists, designers, and photographers.

In this episode, I ask her about her career as an arts writer, and we delve into the process of writing an arts book. A Black History of Art with Alayo Akinkugbe

EPISODE 32 of 'All About Art': Interview with Alayo Akinkugbe, founder of A Black History of Art

In this episode, I had the joy of sitting down with Alayo Akinkugbe, the founder of an Instagram account that has been a game changer - Alayo founded A Black History Of Art in 2020 and she did so with the aim of providing a more diversified overview of art history when she realized that she hadn’t been taught about ONE black artist throughout her whole first year studying History of Art at Cambridge.

The account has now amassed over 55 thousand followers, highlighting the overlooked Black artists, sitters, curators, and thinkers from art history to the present day. Within this episode, Alayo and I speak about her education at Cambridge and the Courtauld in London, but we also dig deep into how she feels that the account has affected her career. We also talk about her professional trajectory, and how what she has learned through her education in art history and curating, as well as her work within decolonizing the sector, has impacted what type of work she wants to do later on. Stay tuned to listen to Alayo and I get up close and personal with some deep-rooted issues in art and society, but also tune in to hear us talk about the hope we have for the sector, and how fun it can be.

Artist Interview with Lindsey Jean McLean

Artist Interview with Lindsey Jean McLean

EPISODE 29 of 'All About Art': Artist Interview with Lindsey Jean McLean

In this episode, I sat down with rising star in the world of painting, Lindsey Jean McLean. Lindsey studied at the Glasgow School of Art, the Royal Drawing School, and then at the renowned Slade School of Fine Art. Her works question the historical representation of femininity and women in painting and she does this while depicting figures that exist in a space between portraiture and imagination, a combination of these. She uses recurring motifs such as feather boas, fans and veils that represent transformative objects which often obscure the viewers or the subject’s gaze in her works. In her words, she subverts the historically patriarchal medium of oil paint to dismantle and create a new space to view femininity.

We chat about her artistic practice while she gives advice on how to work as an artist full-time as well as important things to do as an artist to collaborate and further your career. Thank you, Lindsey, for coming on the podcast and sharing your insights!

Gemma Peppé, Founder and Director of Art On A Postcard

EPISODE 28 of 'All About Art': Interview with Gemma Peppé, Founder and Director of Art On A Postcard

Art On A Postcard was first launched in 2014 as a one-off secret postcard auction to raise funds for the Hepatitis C Trust, however, the response and popularity allowed it to continue multiple times a year, every year, since that first auction. These auctions offer postcard-sized works by phenomenal artists such as Damien Hirst, Grayson Perry, Marina Abramoviç, Patric Hughes, Gilbert and George, and Wolfgang Tillmans, to name a few. This episode coincides with their most recent auction, curated by gallerist and curator India Rose James and closing on April 21st, 2022. There are works on offer by the brilliant artists Olivia Sterling, Alma Barrow, Kristy M Chan, as well as Marc Quinn, and Courtney Love. Unlike all previous ones, this auction will not be raising money for the Hepatitis C Trust but instead will be donating the proceeds to Choose Love, a charity that supports Ukrainian refugees.

Dr. Sabine Haag, Director of the KHM-Museumsverband

EPISODE 27 of ‘All About Art’: Interview with MUSEUM DIRECTOR DR. SABINE HAAG

For the All About Art Anniversary episode (!!! A year strong !!!), I sat down with the phenomenal Dr. Sabine Haag, director of the KHM-Museumsverband.

Sabine is an Austrian art historian and is the director of not only one of the most renowned museums worldwide, the Kunsthistorisches Museum, but also the associated institutions, as well, including the Vienna Museum of Ethnology and the Austrian Theater Museum. A woman who has set an example in the arts, Sabine has been leading the Museumsverband since 2009, so over a decade.

In this episode, I ask her all about her career path, starting from her education as an art historian and spanning to present day. I ask her about her role as director, and what that really entails. She gives advice to those seeking to follow in her footsteps, tells us what qualities she looks for in employees, and opens up about what it has been like leading a museum in a pandemic.

Thank you Sabine for taking the time to sit down and chat with me, as well as Natacha Graf and the rest of the team at the Generaldirektion at the Kunsthistorisches Museum for assisting in the facilitation of this marvelous episode, which was not only an absolute joy for me to record but will hopefully be enjoyable and educational to listen to.

Artist Interview with Aline Alagem (in collaboration with ARTPOWHER Contemporary)

EPISODE 25 of 'All About Art': Artist Interview with Aline Alagem (in collaboration with ARTPOWHER Contemporary)

In this episode, I chat with artist Aline Alagem about her work and professional experiences. We chat about her paintings that are loaded with references to the female body, sensuality, sexuality, gender, and more. We also talk about upcoming projects and the lessons she’s learned in past ones. In Aline’s works, feminine sensuality is both a metaphor and a realization of manifesting one’s self. The compositions and collage-like altered scenes in her figurative paintings hint at hidden layers that flow beneath the surface. She states that moments of secret longing and pleasure are “planted” in frosty arctic landscapes, asking about the possibility and impossibility of reaching the edge of desire- becoming it, or being lost in it.

What I love about her works is that they challenge the historical position of women as passive subjects, either of the male gaze or male longing. She says that female bodies no longer exist as vessels for others’ desires, but they become feeling, longing heroines creating their own story.

Have a look at her works on her website: https://alinealagem.com/

Founding an Art & Tech Startup: with Artscapy COO and co-founder Emilia De Stasio

EPISODE 23 of 'All About Art': an Interview on Founding an Art & Tech Startup with Artscapy COO and co-founder Emilia De Stasio

Within this episode, I interview COO and co-founder of Artscapy, Emilia De Stasio about founding a startup that is by art collectors for art collectors and uses the combination of art and technology at its core. Emilia is an entrepreneur, startup investor and advisor, as well as speaker and expert panelist at technology and startup events. Building on five years as a financial analyst and published researcher at the European Central Bank and Moody’s Investors Service, she moved into the world of startups as an investment manager, investing in early-stage tech-driven startups across finance, advertising, VR, digital consumer products, and software solutions. Emilia is committed to giving back to the innovation ecosystem by mentoring founders at UCL, Startup Leadership Programme, and Eligent Accelerator (something she mentions later in the episode!). Emilia contributes a holistic business perspective as the COO of Artscapy, while having a very clear and tangible vision for how to democratize fine art collecting, by being an experienced collector herself.

Stay tuned to hear me chat to Emilia about the company and its mission, what the gaps were within the arts in terms of collecting and technology that needed to be filled, and what is needed if you want to scale a company within the arts. We touch on the important questions you need to ask yourself when speaking to investors as a founder, as well as personal topics such as what it was like founding a company with her husband, Alessandro.

The Art of Framing with Gregory Baker

The Art of Framing with Gregory Baker

EPISODE 21 of 'All About Art': The Art of Framing with Gregory Baker

This episode focuses on a career in the arts that is very hands-on and is intrinsic to the transportation and display of works of art, namely FRAMING with London framer Gregory Baker. We chat about his business as an art framer and how he learned the craft. We also chat about materials he uses, such as various types of glass and how they affect a work of art, as well as his experience as an art technician at Sotheby's auction house which informs his practice today.

Greg graduated from Central Saint Martins with a degree in Fine Art, and went on to work for Steward Heslop Frames and John Davies Frames in the years following his degree. He then proceeded to work for Sotheby's auction house and Alon Zakim Fine Art while starting his own business. He collaborated with Sotheby's and has framed works by the likes of Cy Twombly, Lucien Freud, David Hockney, Georg Baselitz, and Jenny Saville. He is currently working with artist and art dealer David Breuer-Weil, whose sculptures you probably know from St Pancras New Church at Euston, London, all the while maintaining his framing studio and furthering his craft.

If you want to get in touch, you can email him at gregorybakerframes@gmail.com

P.S. Listen past the outro to hear Greg give me my Christmas gift, which was very much in line with the episode! Such fun, thank you Greg.

MTArt: Being an Artist, with Walter & Zoniel

EPISODE 20 of 'All About Art': MTArt: Being an Artist, with artist duo Walter & Zoniel

In this episode, I sat down with Walter and Zoniel, an artist duo represented by MTArt Agency. We talked about their art, which involves a multidisciplinary approach and often results in interactive and socially engaging installations. A central theme in their work is the sublime, but also the human condition through questioning our relationship with our surroundings. They work with different mediums by using nature or other tools such as handmade cameras or innovative printing techniques, which is also something we talk a bit more about later in this episode. Public art and accessibility are important themes for the duo, as they believe art is for everybody, so they enjoy creating pieces for the public domain.

This episode is part of a special partnership with MTArt Agency, a certified B Corp® award-winning talent agency for the most exciting up and coming visual artists worldwide, and a creative agency that delivers exciting art-driven projects for brands, public bodies, and cultural organizations. EPISODE 13 of 'All About Art': Viewing Art Online

The covid-19 pandemic has changed the way we've interacted with art in the last year. Artist Interview with Claudia Chanhoi a.k.a Brain x Eyes (in collaboration with ARTPOWHER Contemporary)

EPISODE 11 of ‘All About Art’: Artist Interview with Claudia Chanhoi a.k.a. Brain x Eyes (in collaboration with ARTPOWHER Contemporary)

In this episode I sat down to interview illustrator and artist Claudia Chanhoi. I asked her about her artistic practice, how she balances her professional life with her art career, her experiences in the arts as a woman, and more.

Feel free to get in touch with her on her instagram or check out her website, linked here.

This episode is in collaboration with ARTPOWHER Contemporary, an art project initiative that places focus on female-identifying and non-binary creatives in the arts. The CEO, Anna Maurrasse-Tomaiuolo, founded ARTPOWHER with the aim of raising awareness about gender stereotypes and gender inequality while inspiring change through creativity and collaborations. You can find out more through the website or over Instagram.

For International Women’s Day in March 2021, I conducted a written interview with Claudia about her works in the online exhibition “Yin My Way Out”, presented by ARTPOWHER Contemporary which launched on Artsy on May 8th and will be coming to an end on June 10th. Within the scope of the exhibition, I wrote an essay on the art of illustration which covers the history of illustration, how the arts sector views illustration, how the emergence of the digital has had an effect on this, and why there is some friction when it comes to using the labels of “illustrator” and “artist”.
