1999 Rally in the Valley

1999 Rally in the Valley

In 1999, I was in Spokane, Washington.

When I was not stuffing my face with Tony Roma ribs, Outback Steaks, Mongolian stir fry, and 83 gallons of coffee, I was the project Site Commander for the IMAC Tactical Security Group during a labor dispute/ strike at the Kaiser Aluminum – Trentwood facility in the valley.

In this year, I drove hundreds of miles a month, took over 1700 photographs, 11 hours of video, and swept 7 conference centers and break-out rooms for electronic devices. When I was not actively engaged with monitoring static posts during the day, I was out at night surveilling for potentially threatening individuals around our clients' homes.

If you were not born yet, then you missed some crazy times. The Family Guy, The Matrix, The Sopranos were all released in '99 along with Eminem's album Slim Shady. Representative Nancy Mace – was the first female to graduate from the military academy, the Citadel, and President Clinton was put through an impeachment trial. But, the big ticket event was people losing their shit over computers crashing on New Year's.

Shots Fired - and I am Amazed

Shots Fired - and I am Amazed

We often wonder if the messages we send, are getting to the ears that need it, and it appears that it is occurring. From here in the United States, through Europe, Latin America, and parts of the Pacific, people are listening, and engaging – what the hell were they thinking tuning into this show?

This show was not intended to be part of the weekly podcast but because of the tremendous engagement after releasing "Get out of their box,” I had to record it to say thank you for listening, and the amazing support.

This episode is  dedicated to Betty Stout and JR.

“To be able to listen -- really, wholly passively, self-effacingly listen -- without presupposing, classifying, improving, controverting, evaluating,
approving or disapproving, without dueling with what is being said, without rehearsing the rebuttal in advance, without free-associating to portions of what is being said so that succeeding portions are not heard at all -- such listening is rare.”
Abraham Maslow

Get out of their box..

Get out of their box..

Many of us are like chameleons; we try to adapt our physical, mental, and emotional projections to fill the eyes and mentality of those around us with what we think they want to see.

It’s time to pull your ass out of the box and live without the fear of not being accepted. Be fat, blunt, and full of love – what you see in the mirror is the one you have to consider the most.

How HR changed the sound of safety.

How HR changed the sound of safety.

When I started to work on this episode, I knew it would be different for quite a few reasons. With JR working remotely with family in Washington state, I used AI-generated voices for the intro and outro, and it sucked!

I was then fortunate enough to find the legendary Keith Krammer on Fiverr. With the assistance of a radio talk show professional and audio engineer, I changed the face of the show – forever/

So with this new approach and insight, I discuss two significant turns to the MICM program. I recently added the Two Vets podcast to interview military and first responder veterans who risked for total strangers and family every day and how their service changed their lives.

And I discussed an app introduced by HR professionals, which has saved over 500 lives in east Tennessee and southwest North Carolina because it communicated safety in a whole new way for those listening.

The future of this podcast series is going to be epic.

How to be famous by 55

How to be famous by 55

What do Colonel Harlan Sanders, Julia Childs, Duncan Hines, Ray Kroc, and I have in common? We would all have wait until we were after 50 to become famous.

I just turned 54 on the 14th and found out three things.

The first is that I did not win the lottery. Not a damn penny

The second is that after getting my tattoo on Saturday at Crater City Ink that was mentioned in the intro, that if I was going to be gay for someone, then I would be Josh’s boo … I mean a fellow army medic and veteran, who took on being a fire fighter and paramedic as a civilian, and gets to draw tramp stamps on truck drivers and others? What the hell is not to love?

He and his wife Lori are an incredible team, and Ronda and I love the hell out of them.

And the third thing, that made me realize I was bound to be famous – was acknowledging that I am a salesman.

How First Aid Kits brought on changes in PPE.

How First Aid Kits brought on changes in PPE.

So when I was working with a team of maintenance workers with a high number of lacerations, and injuries to their hands, I found the perfect way to reduce the issues within two months. I gave first aid kits to teams that didn’t need them and had the lowest injury rates.

Listen to this episode to learn how a group mindset and poor safety practices were triggered to change in under 10 minutes.

Safety Outlook for 2022

Safety Outlook for 2022

So in this segment, I am discussing the–  Safety Outlook for 2022

In the safety industry, many of us have been institutionalized these past two years by the effects of the pandemic and the severe conditions placed on them by OSHA and by the members of management not knowing how to deal with the events.

The year has to start with reassessing the site or project for hazards or changes—updates to the safety programs, procedures, and how training will be accomplished.

Some of the significant areas that will be affected include.

Communication

Teamwork

- Teams will be hindered by social distancing, restrictions on materials.

Technology

- Many will work away from paper and pen because of the issues with common contact, lost documentation, and the ability to instantly share.

Training

- Many OSHA trainers have given up or nonrenewed their certification due to the high number of companies using online sources.

1990 - From Soldier to Sh!t Show

1990 - From Soldier to Sh!t Show

1990 was the best and worst of times for me. In this first episode on Diary of a Bald Man, I talk about how a life changing event took me from a perceived "top of the world," to an epic failure.

It's not how we fall - it's how we fight to get back up that's important. By not living with regrets of what could have been - we are free to do so much better.
