The Right to Health Special
Welcome to the Health and Social Care Academy's Right to Health Podcast Special, with the ALLIANCE’s policy and information officer, Billi Allen-Mandeville.
Following on from the publication of our report, “Investigating Knowledge and Understanding of the Right to Health” and to celebrate World Health Day, in this episode we explore what the right to health is and what it looks, and could look like, for people and practice across Scotland.
We know that everyone in Scotland has the fundamental right to “the highest attainable standard of physical and mental health” according to the World Health Organisation and under International Law.
However, high levels of health inequalities continue to exist in Scotland compared with the rest of the UK and Europe.
We will be chatting with experts including Dr Rebecca Mason from Young Women's Movement Scotland, GP Fellow at the University of Glasgow and Deep End GP Dr Marianne McCallum, Dr Tony Robertson of the People’s Health Movement and the University of Stirling, and CEMVO’s Human Rights Officer Clare Gallagher.
We hope you enjoy the Health and Social Care Academy’s Right to Health Podcast Special.

My World, My Health: using data to help keep you well
The My World My Health project aims to shine a light on the things that contribute to our wellbeing, but aren't necessarily 'medical' in nature. For example, we might all think of medications, doctors and hospitals as having an obvious impact on our health. We might perhaps even consider diet and exercise. But what about our employment, home life and even the community or society that we live in?
We do not want to move the discussion away from clinical data completely. Instead, we want to broaden it by thinking about the wider factors that influence our wellbeing. Furthermore, we want to consider how we might better use information that is already known.
How do you feel about this type of data sharing? And if it seems like a good thing to explore in some contexts, how should it be designed so it gives you control and also helps you in practical ways? These are some of the questions we will be exploring with the public as part of this project, in partnership with the Digital Health and Care Innovation Centre.
To get involved, you can take part in one of our upcoming workshops or fill in the online survey.
This project is commissioned by Nesta on behalf of the Scottish Government.
