S3E15 - A Refined Playlist

In this episode we are going to discuss the newly released titles of Gears 5 and Borderlands 3 and how they have stuck by the “if it is not broke don’t fix it” mentality. We will also talk about two games that have been out for a while but we have just recently been playing. Finally, we will wrap up the episode talking about the fantastic news of the Super Nintendo addition that was added to the Nintendo Switch Online Catalog!

Show Notes
Gears 5
Picks up right where Gears 4 left off
Make senses but it is the best looking Gears game to date
Every part of the game has been finessed
Hits your right in the feels - right from the get-go
The new addition to have someone play the support class is nice and provides a brand new way for co-op to be played
The story keeps you engaged throughout when some things happened that will leave you shaken story impact wise
They definitely are “gearing” up for a 6
Borderland 3
Mayhem has begun!
Can say right off the bat that anyone looking for something “new” “game-defining” will be disappointed BUT anyone looking for more Borderlands games played that has been even more refined will be in for the best Borderlands game to date.
The loot is never-ending, a lot of QOL added…..though some could still be needed but are minor
Probably the most I have been engaged to the story of any of the main Borderlands games
The dynamic level scaling for co-op is amazing and allows the co-op to be even better as you don’t have to worry about out leveling a friend
On the co-op note the unique loot mode “Cooperative” is what Borderlands has needed for a while
Elder Scrolls Online
The Positives
ESO is a typical MMORPG and tries to give you that experience as best it can
This, however, is not a free-roaming exploration zone-based progression game like Skyrim was and struggles a bit in piecing its story together
LORE - the game is deeply rooted in the world of storytelling and finding out about the world of Tamriel is fun! The game systems, unfortunately, don’t compliment the story enough for me to stay engaged. The buggy, broken systems take away from the experience.
The game has a guided epic story with over 100 hours of main story content to play through. That’s a lot of story to get through but if you are willing to hang on and grind through the content, I think the story delivers a very nice experience!
I think the world quests as a whole do a decent job of capturing the Elder Scrolls experience, as well as the MMO experience. This is all paired and made more bearable because of the epic soundtrack!
CRAFTINGOne of my favorite aspects of the MMO genre and ESO does a brilliant job on it’s crafting system!
It does have its downsides as the resources needed for crafting, does require a large “Bag, Vault, and Storage Space” but is manageable
Even though they do a good job overall, this system still has a lot of features that needed to be better to enjoy it!
Let’s talk big adventure and big story for a moment
The Negatives
A search bar for ingredients or materials when inside a vault or storage area
There is absolutely no way to sell your resources except through “Hocking” items in world chat, or at a “Guild” store
Syncing with other players and timing of events such as helping other players out in quests seems to be a challenge most of the time.
The multi-player gameplay is “Lazy” feeling as once you do get synced up it doesn’t seem to be much of a challenge to defeat enemies.
Overall the game was too disconnected for me to really enjoy overall, even though I love MMO’s and I love the grind this one wasn’t for me
The game overall has some of the most annoying buggy systems I’ve ever seen
Finding a guild isn’t the easiest process by any means
GOLD SPAMMERS, they exist in every MMO and it will always be a negative impact on someone's experience
The game, in general, looks pretty terrible!
Between the drab world landscapes, and details it makes for a pretty lackluster experience.
The combat mechanics are very

WoW Classic -
The re-release of the game that has dominated the MMO landscape for almost 15 years
Everyone has been able to Experience what happened when Wow first released.
This time the setting is different - We now have instant updates on people’s progress, superior communication(Discord), and gaming communities that didn't exist 15 years ago(Twitch. Mixer, Facebook...etc)
Brand new ways of playing are being done just due to support from communities made possible by modern entertainment avenues(Example - Streamer loot)
It will be interesting to see how the drop of goes but even with that said we are about to get Battlegrounds added - Blizzard is having an update schedule similar to what took place or original WoW release
Minecraft -
A resurgence in Minecraft has taken ahold - why is this?
People like us have stopped playing long ago as many updates have taken place completely changing some aspect of Minecraft
Also, Shaders and Texture packs almost make it like a completely different game
Some Fornite streamers have actually gained popularity because of Minecraft
It is a game of Endless play and Endless Customization
Bring in friends and the fun goes up exponentially

Destiny 2 Battle Pass (Season Pass)
Destiny franchise director Luke Smith, Bungie revealed how seasons will work in Destiny 2’s third year; including Shadowkeep and New Light this fall.
Each season has a free or paid version (“10 bucks” each, according to Smith), similar to battle passes in games like Fortnite or Dauntless. The first season of Year 3, Season of the Undying, comes bundled with Shadowkeep (players can purchase it separately as well).
ROTATING ACTIVITIES
The new season will focus on changing Destiny 2’s world every three months. In Season of the Undying, players will open a Vex gate, creating a new activity and rewards. Three months later, players will close the gate, end the activities, and set Season of the Dawn in motion. Including Season of the Undying and Season of Dawn, Year 3 will contain four seasons.
Bungie believes that removing activities each season is the only way to make the game feel like it’s evolving. “We believe that Destiny will grow even better when the world state can change and that the best Destiny stories are the ones where ‘you had to be their when…,’” Smith said.
But weapons and rewards for the seasons won’t be gone forever. While Smith didn’t elaborate on how players should expect weapons they’ve missed to return within about six months. However, Smith was clear that there will be periods where players have no current means of acquiring some past items.
ARTIFACTS
On top of seasons rotating activities, the new seasonal Artifact will create individual player growth each season. Artifacts are free for all players, and Guardians can level them up during the season. Each level comes with uncapped bonus power that extends across a player’s account.
Players will also unlock new and powerful mods through the Artifact. After they unlock a mod, Guardians can slot them into weapons and armor for the remainder of the season. The goal is for the mods to change the way players interact with the world and create unique effects against everyday enemies and bosses.
At the end of each season, the seasonal mods and bonus power will reset. Players will earn a new Artifact for the next season, and start the process over again.

S3E12 - Shaping A Cinematic Universe

S3E12 - Shaping A Cinematic Universe

In this episode: We are going to discuss the top genres of the cinematic universe that have shaped our lives from childhood through adulthood.  We will start off discussing the wonders and magic of the Sword and Sorcery genre. Moving into the folklores and myths we will talk about the Fantasy genre. Finally. We will wrap up the episode by discussing lasers, space travel, and aliens as part of the Sci-Fi genre.  Show Notes Sword and Sorcery Genre  Definition: Sword and sorcery is a subgenre of fantasy characterized by sword-wielding heroes engaged in exciting and violent adventures. An element of romance is often present, as is an element of magic and the supernatural   Top 3 Films Detached Krull Is a fantasy swashbuckler which follows a journey of Prince Colwyn and his group of outlaws on the planet Krull to save future queen Princess Lyssa from the Beast and his constantly teleporting Black Fortress. The Dragonslayer Is a medieval fantasy set in a fictional kingdom that follows a young wizard who experiences danger and opposition as he attempts to defeat a dragon  Conan the Barbarian / Conan the Destroyer Is based on stories by Robert E. Howard, a writer of the 1930s, about the adventures of Conan in the fictional world of Hyboria Victus Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time The film has the same title as the video game and is primarily based on it. Elements from Warrior Within and The Two Thrones, the two other titles from the Sands of Time trilogy of the Prince of Persia video game franchise, are also incorporated.  Clash of the Titans Perseus - Son of Zeus Warcraft (The film portrays the initial encounters between the humans and the orcs and takes place in a variety of locations established in the video game series) Draenor, the homeworld of the orcs, is being torn apart by a mysterious force known as fel magic. Its roots are in oral traditions, which then became literature and drama. From the twentieth century, it has expanded further into various media, including film, television, graphic novels, manga, and video games. Fantasy is distinguished from the genres of science fiction and horror by the absence of scientific or macabre themes, though these genres overlap. In popular culture, the fantasy genre predominantly features settings of a medieval nature. In its broadest sense, however, fantasy consists of works by many writers, artists, filmmakers, and musicians from ancient myths and legends to many recent and popular works.    Top 3 Films Detached The Princess Bride Is a fantasy adventure comedy film, adapted by William Goldman from his 1973 novel The Princess Bride, it tells the story of a farmhand named Westley, accompanied by companions befriended along the way, who must rescue his true love Princess Buttercup from the odious Prince Humperdinck. S3E11 - Destiny Resurgence

S3E11 - Destiny Resurgence

In this episode: We cover the recent resurgence of players in the Destiny community, how the state of Destiny is keeping those players engaged, and finishing with the top things we are looking forward to when Shadowkeep hits in September Show Notes Resurgence -  Since the release of Forsaken we have seen a steady decline in the want to play the game - a slight bump in players as new content was released but still a decline But then 3 things took place that combined has revitalized the community to new levels. 1.) Bungie split from Activision This was a huge want from the community to finally split from the “greedy corporates” at Activision Bungie is now free to build a game the way they want to This does not mean Eververse will go away as to keep producing “free” content you need some way to keep the lights on 2.) All new items and content announced for Shadowkeep New Light Some people may say that Free-to-play is a  sign of a game failing but the way that Bungie is implementing is more like a demo but people will still be able to play multiplayer with friends Cross-Save Every multi-platform game to date has wanted this.  We all have friends on different platforms and want to play with them without having to start over.  Cross-save fixes this and will be a continued plus for new players coming into Destiny.   This also pairs REALLY well with Destiny 2 on Stadia too as we now have an on the go version of the game that we can just continue playing our characters Transmogrification sorta - AKA Armour 2.0 Just yes - we finally get to wear the gear we want and slot the stats we want Moon’s Haunted - Story We are going back to the Moon! Looks like we may go up against some ghosts of the past 3.) Season of Opulence The biggest item that has hit with this season has been the Menagerie.  A multi-boss raid-lite that has built-in matchmaking Along with this, and with benefit from a bug, this event has been a go-to grind because of the loot rewards and the ability to craft the weapons how you want it giving the player just the right amount of control. State of the Game People are loving the grind for all things PVE PVP is not in a horrible spot but still is rough There is so much to do if you have not been keeping up and so much content to go through but almost all of it is really good and worth the work So much lore to work through and very engaging storylines to keep up with  -Personal Experience- Tops items we are looking forward to - ERIS MORN!!!! & Cross-Save Be sure to subscribe to the All Things Geekery Podcast with any of your favorite podcast apps. It was announced in the previous week that Sony and Microsoft are working on AI and cloud technology
This move makes no sense due to the continue gaming war the two companies have been in.
...then again it is possible Sony and Microsoft are wising up to what Google is planning to bring to the table.
When it comes to AI and cloud platforms Sony does not have either so it had to choose between the big 3 - Largest Amazon, Establish Microsoft, or the Youngin Google. It went with its mortal enemy
This move also took the PlayStation team by surprise but according to their leadership this has not changed any plans about their future console
We could be looking at the beginning of the end for console gaming.
We could be coming to a time when if you do want low latency input for competitive gaming then you buy a PC type device….if not you sign up for one of the game streaming services that will be available.
Microsoft console announcement could have some of the “cloud gaming attributes” as part of the architecture. - We shall see at E3
Side - note our next podcast will be an E3 pre-show where we will be talking about our expectation and wants to happen at this year's E3

Epic

Let’s set the scene - Stream has had a monopoly on the digital gaming distribution market and launcher since it’s launch in 2003.
For a while it was the only one launcher to rule them all - Steam had a monopoly when it came to a game launcher platform
Some popped up but those were only for their own launchers - Blizzard, Origin, Bethesda
Then Epic came along and decided to put their massive cash flow from Fortnite to use - Making a universal game launcher to compete with steam
Right out of the gate - it was a much better alternative for game developers as Epic would only take 12% compared to the current Steam rate of 30%
Some companies immediately started deployment of their game on Epic and Steam but at the same time Epic was immediately paying companies money to gain exclusive or limited exclusive rights
And this is where the controversy takes place
The hate against EPIC has been extreme….
Main points of “HATE” that Epic takes
“Unfair” Exclusives
The store has less function than Steam
Rumor of the “Less secure - security” platform
People have been used to the convenient monopoly the Stream produced

S3E8 - Avengers Endgame Review

Welcome to Season 3 Episode 8 of the All Things Geekery Podcast – Avengers Endgame Review
In this episode, we are starting off with a spoiler-free review of Endgame for all those that have still yet to see the movie. Then we will dive into some of the biggest scenes throughout the movie and what we thought of each. Wrapping up the podcast we will talk about our thoughts on what the future of the MCU could be.
Show Notes
Spoiler Free Review
Go see the movie! - Ok done
It is hard pressed to say that there could have been a better resolution to the end of the Infinity Saga.
Although the total run time is 3 hours, every minute was enjoyable and filled action and or interesting story
The movie is one of the best fan service movie created and that is not a bad thing
Lets talks scenes - SPOILERS
Before the Time Gap
Majority of the community was correct in that Endgame started right up where Infinity War stopped
We finally see why Hawkeye goes so far off the deep end - his ENTIRE family was dusted - that would break any man
How did Captain Marvel know to pick up Tony and Nebula? Did she go to Earth first and then head out?
Really impressed with how frail they made Tony look - Was not expecting Tony to be as beaten mentally as he was when they rescued him
The infinity stones were still usable??.....Until Thanos snapped them away...
Wow - they kill Thanos off in the first 30 mins
The Avengers were truly defeated
After Time Gap (Before Heist)
Each Avenger is coping in their own way - Almost every Avenger is broken - More so than others
Natasha is so desperate to get my to normalcy - She is now the leader of the remaining Avengers trying to get order in the world
Odd note here is you would think the world would be in worse shape than what it is in - but you know plot reasons
Pan to Scott’s van, which is now in the storage facility and we get to see the real hero of the movie - Splinter aka the random rat
Fortunately, Cassie was not dusted as that would have broken Scott and thus ended the story - but again plot reasons
Tony’s Family is probably wanna of the best and most heartfelt moments in the movie - It showed the full growth that Tony’s character has gone through since Iron Man 1
Fan service #3453 - Professor hulk - A brand new person that had both the memories of Hulk and Banner but acted more on the civilized Banner side
Thor “Big Lebowski” Odinson - Seeing the once mightiest Avenger reduced to self-pity and carelessness really brought home how much weight each of the Avengers put on themselves for not stopping Thanos - Thor more than anyone because he had the chance to stop Thanos and didn’t
Ronin/Hawkeye has gone off the deep end - He has become a no hold vigilante
After Time Gap (The Time Heist)
Space, Time, and Mind - Cap, Banner/Hulk, Antman, Ironman
Right to the battle of New York and getting to see “America’s @$$”
Cap works for HYDRA?!?!? JK but great call out to the Secret Empire comic
Loki stole the Space Stone?!?! - Well there goes that timeline
1970 - Plan B - Tony and dad meet
The Sorcerer Supreme is in the movie!

Power and Soul - War Machine, Nebula, Black Widow, and Hawkeye
Nebula is part of a network?
Well dang now past Thanos knows of his future success and also Avengers attempt
We knew a sacrifice was going to be made and it was only perfect that Black Widow and Hawkeye went - from a story standpoint Black Widow dying made the most sense

Reality Stone - Thor and Rocket
They are going to extract it with a needle?!?!
Renna Russo AKA Frigga had the most lines in all of MCU
This is hopefully causing Thor to eat more salads

They used old footage of Natalie Portman

Infinity stones back together and Snap everyone is back just like that - kinda forgot it included birds too
The Final
Past Thanos comes to the future and immediately bombs the Avengers
Thor with Mjolnir and Stormbreaker???!!!???
CAPTAIN AMERICA CAN WIELD MJOLNIR!!!!!
CAPTAIN SHIELD CAN BREAK?!?
How can 3 take on a world-conquering army??

S3E7 - Bad Dad Jokes & Star Wars

Welcome to Season 3 Episode 7 of the All Things Geekery Podcast – Bad Dad Jokes & Star Wars In this episode, we are going to do something fun tonight. Throughout our podcast, we are going to throw out some Bad Dad Jokes. So those of you that appreciate a “bad” joke, these are for you.  Regarding topics, we will discuss what could be time period of the next Assassin's Creed Game. We will also delve into some troubling news from Bioware and how it might affect the next Dragon Age game. We will wrap up the episode talking about Avengers Endgame, The next Star Wars game Jedi Fallen Order, and our thoughts on Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker. Show Notes Assassin’s Creed Vikings Teaser An unusual teaser in Ubisoft’s The Division 2, highlighted weeks after the game’s release, reveals that the next Assassin’s Creed game is all about Vikings The teaser located within the Potomac Event Center.  There are numerous posters all over this event center, picturing what appears to be a Norse god or traveler adorned with the word Valhalla.   What’s particularly interesting is that said traveler is holding what appears to be the Apple of Eden, a pivotal piece of technology in Assassin’s Creed lore. Dragon Age 4 The upcoming fourth entry into BioWare’s Dragon Age series was reportedly rebooted in 2017 and is allegedly influenced by a canceled Dragon Age project the studio had potentially been working on since 2015. reports that the current version of Dragon Age 4 began development under the codename Morrison while the canceled project was known by the codename Joplin. Morrison is reportedly being made on Anthem’s tools and codebase and is planned to have a “live service component” designed to sustain long-term gameplay and revenue. The current project is reportedly being made in BioWare’s primary Edmonton offices. Some BioWare developers allegedly said it’s possible a Dragon Age game built on Anthem’s codebase could have an offline structure. However, it appears the game will likely be online-only, but could largely still be experienced by a single player. One individual close to the Morrison project says its main story will be designed as a single-player experience, and multiplayer elements would ideally keep players engaged for post-launch content. If the report is accurate, project Morrison is Dragon Age 4: The Dread Wolf Rises. Dragon Age 4 was teased at The Game Awards 2018, accompanied by a BioWare blog post. Nearly a year before Dragon Age 4 was teased, BioWare’s Casey Hudson said the next Dragon Age game would be a live game, explaining "I think you’ll be relieved to see what the team is working on. Story & character focused. Too early to talk details, but when we talk about ‘live' it just means designing a game for continued storytelling after the main story." Who Will Die In Avengers End Game Avengers End Game releases April 26th Who’s most likely to die in End Game The community is heavily leaning towards Captain America for sure dying Iron Man is in a close second Who all do we think will die? Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order Announced in an episode of The Star Wars Show, an exclusive first look of Fallen Order will debut during a special panel on Saturday, April 13. The panel will feature a discussion revealing “never before heard details” ahead of the game’s release, which the hosts listed as Fall 2019. The game follows a Padawan that survived Order 66 and takes place shortly after the events Revenge of the Sith. What would we like to see in the game STORY, STORY, STORY - We need an amazing and engaging story that draws us into the Star Wars universe We need true Canon - Don’t mess with the Star Wars Canon (Us LORE nerds need you to understand this) Show us new things New Worlds New Weapons New Races, People, Etc FLYING - Let us take flight, jump into ships and space jump to another planet, or galaxy to meet new NPC’s and explore new missions!  GIVE US SPACE COMBAT!!! S3E6: It Is About Time

Welcome to Season 3 Episode 6 of the All Things Geekery Podcast – It Is About Time
In this episode, We’ll talk about Google’s recent announcement of their game streaming service Stadia and what we think it means for the future of gaming. We also share our opinions on the recent completion of the Disney and Fox Entertainment buyout. X-men finally in the MCU...YAY! Finally, we’ll wrap things up talking about Microsoft's recent and the much-expected announcement that we are finally getting the Masterchief collection on PC!
Show Notes
Stadia

We talked previously about game streaming in a previous podcast
Some of the best ones so far - Nvidia Now - Playstation Now
Google tested the waters when they had people test their streaming with Google Chrome and from everyone reported it was really smooth.
With the announcement of Stadia, Google is in a prime position to be the game streaming king
Pros
They have the network to do it
The corporate presence to push ISPs to provide good internet to all
They have the micro-data centers close to users to provide low latency

What we don’t know
Price - This will be a huge indicator for the immediate success of the project - It would be smart to break out payment groups - one for ultra high-end gaming and the other for lower resolution streaming
Games - This is also another key item that needs to be well met - There needs to be a selection for all ages and type of gamer.
Release date - Without a release date this announcement is nothing but a pipe dream. With that said, time to advertise and promote the product will really success - They need to prompt this like the next big AAA game to hit the market. If successful it will change the way we game

Disney and Fox merge
Every MCU fans dream is coming true nerd's dream is coming true….and it only cost 71.1 Billion dollars to achieve
Before we nerd out on the future of Marvel movies - Disney is now the largest entertainment company with this merger. They own every movie ever produced or in the works by 20th Century Fox.
One sad note is this now means is that 20th Century Fox is no more.
Fox is now a news and Sports company
Nerd out time!
Since the beginning of the MCU fans knew we were always going to only a part of the Marvel universe in the MCU
Previous to this we have seen some amazing X-men movies and also some not so great movies -
With staple actors already taking up rolls for many of the X-men character (example James Mcavoy - Professor X and Michael Fassbender - Magneto) will they recast for when they finally introduce the Xmen into the MCU?
The one person that they can’t recast is Ryan Reynold as Deadpool - Ryan IS Deadpool - which this also means we may see our first R rated MCU movie when that does happen
The only question left is WHEN will we start to see the integration of these characters in the MCU

Master Chief Collection on PC!
It as if a million halo fans cried out in Joy!
And of course, it will only be available in the Microsoft store…….wait it’s going to be on Steam??!?! Microsoft you are doing this right!
With the move to PC, we have been promised that all the games will play at 4K and 60FPS on capable PCs
They are also including support for ultrawide monitors
The Games on PC will be released in chronological order and not all at once
The amount of support for this brand shows how much love people still have for it - When released redefined how FPS should be done.
It does make one wonder how long Microsoft can keep trying to make cash on the Halo franchise with old material before releasing something new
It will be interesting to track how long MCC on PC will be popular before everyone returns back to their games they are playing right now
Currently, the MCC is reported to be released in its entirety in 2019 which means we only have 9 months left to see them release.

S3E5 - Gotta Collect Them All

Welcome to Season 3 Episode 5 of the All Things Geekery Podcast – Gotta Collect Them All
In this episode, We will talk about the upcoming live-action take on pokemon and also the fastest hedgehog on earth Sonic. We also talk about some really good news about the upcoming Star Wars game and what it could mean for the success of that game. Lastly, we’ll talk about the latest controversy regarding Anthem and how Bioware is handling the situation.
Show Notes
Pokemon - Detective Pikachu

First impressions “What have they done to my childhood??”
Ryan Reynolds as Pikachu….REALLY?!?
Directed by Ron Letterman - creator of Shark Tale, Monster vs Aliens, and the most recent Goosebumps
After watching it a couple of times the appeal is really starting to grow
The CGI of each character has actually kept close to what they look like as anime
With that said,.....some pokemon look horrifying as CGI
If this movie does well what does this means for the future of pokemon big screen movies
Releases May 10th

Sonic

Directed by new director Jeff Fowler
The first images of Sonic have not gone will with the fan base
Apparently, they are going for a more human-like appearance for Sonic
Question is why they could not do like Pokemon and the form of the character stays the same they just bring the character into the real world CGI.
We have yet to even see the adaptation of the man bad guy Doctor Eggman which according to casting will be played by Jim Carrey
As of right now, the hopes are not very high on the reception of this movie
Due to be released November 8th

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order

Will take place in the Star Wars timeline between episode 3 and 4
Under the studio of Respawn Entertainment
They so far have executed their game very well and really mastered what each game was supposed to be with the latest success of their game APEX Legend a testament to that.
With that said the CEOs and this studio haven’t had any experience with an RPG game
One confirmed good thing about the game is that Chris Avellone (Writer for KOTOR 2 and Fallout New Vegas) has done work on the game - to what extent we do not know
He is also saying that we should be expecting a “bomb” in about a month
Maybe...just maybe we will get a Star Wars of a quality that every fan wanted

Anthem

It has not been a good couple PR weeks for Bioware
First, we have had the bugs - which to Bioware's defense they have been quick to fix
Some would argue they the bugs needed to not be there in the first place and a lot was found in the demo beta
Their advertisement as a Game Service has not gone well
Which means a lot of feature we want in the game are still on the way
Bioware/EA banning streaming for violation of the TOS in regards to some explorations that were found.
Although yes the terms in the TOS do cover the action in the ban - the handling of the Bans by BioWare have not been clear and only providing reasons for the ban a weeks after the ban took place
At the same time, there were reports that Anthem was bricking PS4 - this of course was a lot of misinformation spread by the Internet
The main cause was due to the amount of work they game put system through it was causing a previous problem already notated on original PS4 to occur much more often.
Regardless all this PR is not helping Anthem keep the support going - There is worry that EA will pull an Andromeda and stop work on the game as it is not doing as well as they wanted
With this bad PR for Anthem we shall see how Bioware plans to win back the masses

S3E4 - The Good, The Bad, & The Not So Ugly

S3E4 - The Good, The Bad, & The Not So Ugly

Welcome to Season 3 Episode 4 of the All Things Geekery Podcast – The Good, The Bad, & The Not So Ugly In this episode,  we will talk about Activision/Blizzard and the recent job layoffs that happened.  We will also discuss some really exciting news that came from Nintendo regarding their Nintendo Direct. We will delve into a new movie announcement that has us excited, and finally, we will wrap up the podcast by talking about our first impressions regarding Anthem. Show Notes   Activision/Blizzard   Blizzard - the tale of a company that has become a monster governed by executives and not developers 800 employees laid off even though Activision/Blizzard made a profit for last year At the same time, big bonuses were seen given to CEO Bobby Kotick and CFO Dennis Durkin With this information alone the anger at Activision has shot up But….this was not completely without forewarning - Key thing being the split from Bungie A lot of Activision studios (not just gaming studios - marketing, people relations) were supporting Destiny 2 - Now those teams do not have a game to support or represent. The roster for AAA games coming this year or next from either Activision or Blizzard is bleak The future will be rough for Activision/Blizzard   Nintendo Direct Several announcements were made but we are going to call out the ones that caught our eye Super Mario Maker 2 - For all those that really got into the creativity that was on Mario Maker 1, this will expand on it and add even more feature while fully utilizing current Gen switch hardware. - Let's see if another “Impossible” level can be made! The be all end all killer of Fortnite - Tetris 99 - Yes, that is sounding as weird as the name says - 99 players all with Tetris boards try to be the last one standing - unique thing is the ever line you clear can be used and sent to someone else to push them up and cause them to lose. The Big surprise announcement that was Legend of Zelda - Link’s Awakening The original game was a huge deal with all the new mechanics (flying on Cuccos, trading sequences, playing songs on an ocarina, fishing, and even mini-bosses) it introduced that we now see in almost every modern Zelda like game. A complete remaking of a beloved game and it looks like they are going to completely keep to the original mechanics and spirit of the game This will be the first complete remaster for Nintendo - Although Link between Worlds was set in the same map and zone as Link to the Past it was not a remaster - Tolkien John Ronald Reuel Tolkien Father of modern Fantasy literature Was an English writer, poet, philologist, and university professor at Oxford from 1925 - 1945 He was at one time a close friend of CS Lewis...they were both members of the informal literary discussion group known as the Inklings.   Tolkien was appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth II on 28 March 1972. Tolkien Film Documentary Drama The film explores the orphaned author's life as he finds friendships, love, and inspiration amongst a group of fellow outcasts at school Releases: May 10th in theaters         Anthem - Hands-on   This information is taken from us jumping into the actual release of Anthem that took place on the 22nd and not the early access that happened on the 15th and so our information comes with playtime with the most recent patches installed With that said Anthem is gorgeous - The dynamic changes between the areas that you get to play keeps the areas fresh and unique. If playing on PC and you are able to get to those high-end graphics setting the world comes alive. Regarding In-game settings - we would advise that you turn off Motion Blur and camera shake as doing those two things completely changes the way the game feels - It really felt like a better and more fluid game. The gunplay is just as good as we saw in the Demo - Each weapon type having a unique feel to it with you having to grind out for that special perk for your endgame gear/weapons Ev

S3E3 - All About Anthem

S3E3 - All About Anthem

Welcome to Season 3 Episode 3 of the All Things Geekery Podcast – All About Anthem In this episode,  We talk about the recent “DEMO” for Anthem, What problems we encountered, Our 1st Impressions, What we thought about the gameplay and we discuss what we think the future of the game will be. Show Notes  Our Snapshot Opinion of the Game Anthem feels like Mass Effect made a child with Division and they were raised by Iron Man in the world of Monster Hunter This game is not Destiny, it is not The Division, it is not Warframe.  The one thing we can comment on is the quality of the game. Publisher Concerns EA - Need we say more VIP weekend DEMO didn’t have a good start Will they learn, and correct the issues presented during the demos - It seems like they did with the Open DEMO as server problems were much less but we did experience issues the first day There will be microtransaction but only for cosmetics and all cosmetics in the game can be bought with a certain in-game currency - 0 items in the market currently affect your gameplay Technical Issues Not a technical issue but the naming could have been changed from DEMO to BETA and a lot of the PR would have been addressed - Community would have been more forgiving Server problems Connection Issues - for the VIP demo only Lag - Mostly in VIP demo Audio problems Overall Feel Combat Good mix of strategy and learning needed Teamwork oriented Solo queue play is very challenging as you really need to be able to communicate with your team Some mid-level tier enemies were extremely tanky.  EA will need to look at balancing the enemies vs. player shield levels Loot One massive key to a shooter-looter is the LOOT and it’s got to be good The loot in this game was exciting and fun to get your hands on Weapons Good mix of weapons to use Depending on what types of weapons you prefer there could be a bit of learning curve with the weapons Situational Each class should have a special weapon they can use, which I think would give just a bit more edge and hone in each class for specific fighting styles.  Would allow players to have a bit more customization with how they choose weapons for each of the slots A lot of the weapons had the same look, sound and feel which made it hard to figure out what to use Skills Learning curve Some skills felt very underwhelming in specific fights Situational Skills are somewhat customizable Movement Really felt like a console game that was ported to PC with how the controls were laid out Flight and Underwater Movement was a massive learning curve Overall movement was top notch and felt very smooth for the most part Environments Beautifully made worlds Challenging to navigate first time in as most new worlds are Exploration and hidden items  Playing The Javelin Each Javelin is unique - Each has a unique feel Our Opinion of each Javelin STORM RANGER COLOSSUS INTERCEPTOR  The Future of Anthem We now have a road map which shows a plan with new strongholds, loot, quality of life changes, & GUILDS! The core Bioware team is making this game The End game has Legendary missions which are enhanced versions of the missions you get from quest givers. The drops from these missions will also be of a higher tier to match difficulty. For the ultimate test in skill and squad cohesion, you can increase the difficulty of the mission to Grandmaster and above.    It looks like we will have Diablo style loot in that there are rolls which will sync better depending on the play styles you are going for.  FARMING NEEDED! S3E2 - Superhero Madness

S3E2 - Superhero Madness

Welcome to Season 3 Episode 2 of the All Things Geekery Podcast – Superhero Madness In this episode, the geeks are back to discuss all the upcoming superhero & villain films coming out this year and what our thoughts are on each. Show Notes Captain Marvel Release Date: March 8, 2019 What We Know So Far Marvel’s first female-led superhero film will revolve around the most powerful character in the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe.  This iteration of Captain Marvel will focus on the character of Carol Danvers, whose adventures are earthbound but whose powers are based in the cosmic realm. Joss Whedon wanted to introduce the character at the end of Avengers: Age of Ultron, but Marvel didn’t want to bring Captain Marvel into the MCU fully formed without first telling her origin story. This film will be a prequel to the MCU, taking place in the 90s and bringing back Clark Gregg as Agent Coulson for the first time since The Avengers. Moreover, the comics characters the Skrulls are the villains with a story revolving around the Skrull vs. Kree war, which explains why Lee Pace and Djimon Hounsou are reprising their roles from Guardians of the Galaxy as Kree. That could have major repercussions leading into Avengers 4, but Captain Marvel will also give us a two-eyed Nick Fury. Jude Law is set to co-star as the alien Mar-Vell. Hellboy Release Date: April 12, 2019 What We Know So Far: Hellboy creator Mike Mignola came up with the story for this new reboot as opposed to moving forward with the third film in Guillermo del Toro‘s established franchise, and Stranger Things standout David Harbour fills the role of the titular character for director Neil Marshall, who helmed The Descent and a couple standout Game of Thrones episodes. The film has loosely based the Rise of the Blood Queen arc with Milla Jovovich filling that villainous role, while Ian McShane plays Trevor Bruttenholm and Daniel Dae Kim fills the part of Ben Daimio. Oh, and this is 100% Rated R. Shazam Release Date: April 5, 2019 What We Know So Far: Making his superhero movie debut, Dwayne Johnson opted to take on the role of the villainous Black Adam in this DC comics adaptation, but Warner Bros. subsequently decided to hold Johnson for a separate Black Adam movie so Shazam will be all about that hero. Lights Out and Annabelle: Creation director David F. Sandberg is directing, and this served as Warner Bros.’ next DCEU film in production after Aquaman. Zachary Levi is the title superhero character, with Asher Angel playing his boy counterpart Billy Batson. The story revolves around a young boy who can transform into a powerful superhero simply by uttering the word “Shazam!”. Mark Strong is playing the film’s villain, Dr. Thaddeus Sivana. Avengers Endgame Release Date: April 26, 2019 What We Know So Far: The conclusion to the epic two-part Avengers storyline will close out Marvel’s ambitious MCU with a bang. The title, Avengers: Endgame, has finally been revealed, if not the story, confirmed cast, etc. Dark Phoenix Release Date: June 7, 2019 What We Know So Far: The sequel to X-Men: Apocalypse has been firmed up as Dark Phoenix, which will tackle the beloved Jean Grey story arc from the comics that was first broached (and botched) in X-Men: The Last Stand. X-Men writer/producer Simon Kinberg has penned the script and is making his directorial debut on the project, which also stars Jessica Chastain as maybe the villain Lilandra and is bringing back pretty much the entire main X-Men cast. The movie won’t be skimping on the weirdness, as it’s been confirmed that the story will find the X-Men finally venturing to space. Hans Zimmer is coming out of superhero movie retirement to compose the score. Spider-Man Far From Home Release Date: July 5, 2019 What We Know So Far: Not much. Bolstered by the positive response to Homecoming, director Jon Watts returned to direct, and screenwriters Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers, who came on to rewrite Homecoming, wrote the sc

S2E15 - The Endgame

S2E15 - The Endgame

Welcome to Season 2 Episode 15 of the All Things Geekery Podcast: The Endgame
In this episode, we’re talking about the new trailer for Avengers 4 and all the HYPE along with it! We’re also sharing our thoughts on Destiny 2’s latest DLC; Black Armory and the new Dawning event that just hit!
Show Notes

Avengers 4 - Endgame
It was a great trailer that showed nothing
Why is Tony Stuck without Nebula
Could we see a possible introduction of Captain Marvel in this film, by her finding Tony Stark floating in space ie: She rescues Iron Man
Thanos is still enjoying his peace on the farm
Cap is back to his Winter Soldier look but all black - everyone is in mourning
We get a small glimpse of Hawkeye, but he isn’t wielding his famous bow this time, instead, he has a sword
Ant-man makes it out of the Quantum zone
Could we see the Quantum Zone introduce alternate timelines to the story
This trailer honestly brings up more questions than answers and the film doesn’t release until April 2019

Black Armory Thoughts / Controversy

First content addition(critical call out) that did not include story mission and instead added new “Escalation protocol” type events called forges
Right off the bat, we could tell this was endgame content
It was odd not to have something like that was a bridge between those that were still leveling up to 600. The starting forge was recommended to be 620-630. So this left a lot of people behind in the experiencing the Black Armoy content.
With that said how does that compare to a game like World of Warcraft the when new content releases it - most times only the top level get to immediately play it with other still having to work through the other content
Now Destiny is a different game so bridging could have been made
The is where most of the controversy was and how some of the player bases reacted
The Raid - Different, New Mechanics, a Good change to the raids we have seen before with sparrows now an addition and needed skill in the raid along with tanks.
In prep for the raid most had already hit max level as the raid dropped - with that said all the mechanics were in place to make it for a raid fun
There have been idea floated around that level cap should be locked until raid drops and then grind happens - but there is always worry about people “rigging” the system with having loot pre-staged to pop to gain the level advantage

The Dawning Returns

Eva Levante returns after a very long hiatus from the game
The dawning event brings a new feature never seen before in Destiny, or at least never in this style. We now have the ability to cook items for specific quests and rewards through Eva Levante’s crafting oven
We’ve got more triumphs to go after, new loots, new winter-themed gear which has been fairly engaging to grind for
There are 16 cooking recipes you have to learn to earn triumphs, and also a hidden recipe/triumph for master Rahoul where you have to combine the wrong ingredients
There is also an exotic quest tied to a new Dawning themed sparrow - Good call back to the age of triumph armor and all the unlocks we had to do for it to reach its full potential - Why do they not do more of this?

Red Dead Redemption 2
Rockstar knocks it out of the park again with a game that is deep in story and also immerses you in the wild west of America in 1899
The verdict is out on this game and the fans are calling it one of the greatest games of the modern age.
You can expect a very lengthy story of around 60 hours of gameplay with some of the best storytelling Rockstar has ever done
Rockstar went all out on the level of detail this game brings the players as it is leaps and bounds above anything else they have done
The world is extremely large and will make any open world MMO’er feel right at home for questing, exploring, and make completionist wonder if they should quit as there is that much to do in the game

Red Dead Online
GTA 5 but in the wild west - and that’s not a bad thing -
A lot of the missions are an extension of what we would have done in the story but if you happen to be caring something of value - other players can kill you can take it for themselves.
There will be microtransactions but currently, the only thing that would apply would be gold bars which are used for cosmetics only
Different multiplayer mode that mimics modes we saw in GTA 5
And of course, no modern multiplier is complete without a battle royal mode

Fallout 76
Now when you do have a full team of people all running quests together and fighting off the wasteland it is fun and you do not notice some of the negatives.
With that said Fallout 76 is a shell of a game of what was promised to us - Bethesda has said fixes and content are on the way but right now we have another No Man’s Sky on our hands
It was supposed to be an answer to all the prayers for the fallout fan base which was Fallout game we have known to love but multiplayer It was not
Sure it had that Fallout feel of a game but it had and still has a lot of downsides
No non-robot NPC
Because of no NPC, the story is locked away in audio logs and notes found throughout the world
No decision dialogue
Limited building storage
A LOT of bugs
No Mods Support

Destiny 2 - Season 5 (Season of the Forge / Black Armory)
Black Armory will be releasing on December 4th - Must own the Annual Pass
Story-wise we are being tasked with a new mission to go rediscover 4 weapon forges lost during the golden age
The Hype is real - and yes we know we have been stuck in this before but the success of Forsaken has us encouraged
New higher light level - Increase of 50 Power Levels
New powerful and unique exotics
New areas that we have never been able to access or explore before
Soft cap will still remain at 500
Players under 550 should see an increase in Prime Engram drops, and receive higher power bumps to help them reach end game content a bit easier
Powerful reward sources will remain consistent for anyone who owns D2 Forsaken
New powerful gear rewards introduced for anyone who owns the Annual P

S1E7 - Mass Effect: Andromeda - Our Thoughts & Expectations

In this episode:

Mass Effect: Andromeda is coming very soon. March 21st is the official release, and Iogro and Victus will be jumping in as soon as it hits the systems to check out the much awaited fourth installment of this series.
We discuss how Andromeda has a big set of shoes to fill as the first three installments of the game brought a rich story, fulfilling gameplay, and a very big cliffhanger at the end of Mass Effect 3.
We talk through the story aspects of the game and what gaps a 600 year expanse could potentially bring both the game, and the players experience. Will Andromeda bring a connection of old as well as new and give players the ability to see how Andromeda came about, or will this be a completely separate story moving into a new universe.
Has Bio-Ware waited to long to release Andromeda and have they lost the player base to keep things exciting for the new Mass Effect release, or have they done a good job with keeping the hype up and fulfilling the gaming communities need for this game.
