Overlanding is Out of Control - But We Can Fix It

Overlanding is Out of Control - But We Can Fix It

In this week's episode of the podcast, I'm going to talk a bit about how people, regardless of their budget for buying rigs or gear, are out of control and actively discouraging people from wanting to join the hobby of overlanding. This isn't an indictment or a scolding, but rather a discussion of how it's happening, some of the ways that we're allowing it to happen, and ultimately, how I think we can come together to fix it.

Check out the full episode and hop over to Facebook or Instagram to join the conversation wherever you hang out!

Overlanding Reality Check: What It Really Costs to Go Overlanding

Overlanding Reality Check: What It Really Costs to Go Overlanding

In this week's episode, I'm going to talk a bit about the real costs of Overlanding. It's something I think a lot of people underestimate, but the dollars can add up quickly if you're not careful and aware of falling into some of the common traps with buying Overlanding gear and vehicles.

I'll walk you through the importance of deciding what type of trips you're going to take, which vehicle you want to build out, and then how much comfort and convenience you want in your build. I'll give you some real world numbers based on my experience so you can get a better idea of the true cost of Overlanding.

Solar Power 101: Overlanding Basics (Types of Solar Panels, How it Works, Uses for Overlanders)

Solar Power 101: Overlanding Basics (Types of Solar Panels, How it Works, Uses for Overlanders)

In this week's episode of the podcast, I'm going to run you through the basics of solar power and it's uses for overlanding. I see people asking lots of questions in overlanding and camping groups and forums, so while I'm no electrician, I've been using solar for the last 4 or 5 years and I've learned a lot.

I was in the same place as a lot of us 5 years ago where solar seemed really intimidating and scary, but once I got into it, it's really pretty straightforward and there are so many valuable uses that it's a powerful tool for your overlanding build.

As I mention in the video, here are a couple of helpful links to related articles that may help if you're getting started in solar.

Mono vs. Poly: Solar Cells Comparison: https://sunvivalguide.com/amorphous-vs-monocrystalline-vs-polycrystalline-solar-panel/

Solar calculator: https://mowgli-adventures.com/rv-solar-calculator/

And here are some of the solar products I've used over the years that I liked:

The first 100W Renogy Solar panel with controller that I ran on my Xterra ($130 and includes panel, controller, and cords): https://amzn.to/42YED7p

Odyssey AGM Starter battery (ran this in both my Xterra and again in my Frontier-if you're not in a Nissan truck, verify the battery size for your application): https://amzn.to/3SYXnyP

I built a portable power bank on the cheap using this battery (100AH LifePo4): https://amzn.to/3T0a9gC

And I put that battery in a pre-made battery box for tons of capacity for around $300 total: https://amzn.to/3Ifwpyj

If you have a solar panel, but want a decent budget controller to allow you to hook it up to a battery, this one is great and it's $18: https://amzn.to/3P0oQzh

Or, if you want a better MPPT controller, this one is under $70 and has bluetooth connectivity and a phone app: https://amzn.to/3TdyZuK

Here's that Allpowers power bank and it comes with a 200 watt flexible panel (I'm going to mount mine to the top of my RTT for about $500 total including the power bank and the solar panel): https://amzn.to/49Tkfqi

Overlanding 101: How to Choose the Best Overland Vehicle for You

Overlanding 101: How to Choose the Best Overland Vehicle for You

🚙 Overlanding 101: How to Choose the Best Overland Vehicle for You 🌍

In this comprehensive guide, I'll break down some essential tips and factors to consider when choosing the perfect overlanding vehicle for your adventures. Whether you're a seasoned overlander or a beginner looking to dive into the world of off-grid exploration, this video is your roadmap to selecting the ultimate overland vehicle for you while saving time and money.

🔍 Key Topics Covered:

🏞️ Starting with what you already own: It's easy to fall into the trap of running out to buy the new hottest vehicle and getting into overlanding can be exciting. However, until you've done it for a while, you may not know exactly what you need, so it can be most cost effective (and it should save you a lot of time trying to rebuild after making a bad decision with your first rig) to start with what you have an learn from that.

🚗 Will it be a dedicated overlanding rig or your daily driver: Your overlanding build will change based on whether you have to haul around friends and family, whether you travel a long distance every day to get to and from work, etc. Taking these factors into consideration will help you select and build the right vehicle for you.

🛠️ Budget: It's easy to look at your budget for a vehicle and then spend that full budget, but it's more helpful to consider how capable the vehicle you're considering is and then factor in modifications you'll need to make and gear you'll need to purchase to include all of that in your total budget.

🌟 Why Watch?

Whether you're planning your first overland adventure or looking to upgrade your current vehicle, this video provides a wealth of information to empower your decision-making process. Discover the freedom of overlanding and make sure your vehicle is ready for the challenges that lie ahead!

Overlanding Trends to look out for in 2024 - What's Coming For Overlanders This Year?

In this episode of the podcast, I'm going to talk about what I think are the next 3 big trends that will either start or continue throughout 2024. Now that Overlanding has become a bigger thing in the United States, what will happen with the industry? What will happen with the types and quantity of modifications for our vehicles or gear for camping?

Nissan's 2024 Patents - Passthrough, Modular Truck Bed, Is This Potentially The New Xterra?!

Nissan's 2024 Patents - Passthrough, Modular Truck Bed, Is This Potentially The New Xterra?!

In today's episode of the podcast, I wanted to make something that's hopefully interesting for everyone, but especially my Nissan folks. Nissan applied for some patents in early January of 2024 for a passthrough from a truck cab into the truck bed as well as essentially a bed rack with removable top, sides, and rear panels.

I originally saw the article on this website if you want to check out the whole thing: https://pickuptrucktalk.com/2024/01/soft-top-with-a-pass-through-next-gen-nissan-frontier-patent-is-wild/

So, in today's episode, I'm going to talk about how Nissan has always been weird and quirky and come up with some pretty cool, unique ideas. I'll also talk about the patents themselves and show them to you and describe them for those listening to the podcast. Finally, I'll finish up with my thoughts on what these could actually mean and whether I think it's a good idea or not.

Beyond the Hype: Has Overlanding Hit Its Peak?

Beyond the Hype: Has Overlanding Hit Its Peak?

In this week's episode of the podcast, I saw an article (link: https://www.ordealist.com/overlanding-statistics/) that talks about the Overlanding trend being on the decline. It sights some interesting stats from Google search volume, Overland Expo attendance, and more to make its case. In this episode, I'm going to talk through that, my interpretation of the data, some trends I've seen, and my final thoughts on what I think is happening with Overlanding. Is it becoming less popular or is something else at play in the data? The Truth Behind Gear Reviews on YouTube: Can They Be Trusted? (And What to Look Out For)

The Truth Behind Gear Reviews on YouTube: Can They Be Trusted? (And What to Look Out For)

In this episode of the podcast, I wanted to tackle the topic of YouTubers and gear reviews head on. As a channel that does quite a few gear videos, it's something I see a lot in comments on my videos, in Facebook groups, and pretty much everywhere. Can you trust YouTubers when they talk about gear?

Watch the full video for all the info, but let me just say that if you pay attention, you'll notice that I very seldom call anything a "gear review." To me, a gear review is something that is based on using a product in a variety of conditions for a long period of time. Also, if there's any bias (such as a free product given by a manufacturer to the content creator in exchange for the work it takes to create the video) there will always be inherent bias.

Instead of doing "gear reviews" on this channel, I focus more on sharing cool gear ideas with people, helping you see it in action, sharing things like how to assemble or use a piece of gear, and then usually finish up with my ideas for how I'm going to integrate that gear into my set up. I think there's value in that and I personally often go to YouTube just to learn more and see different gear "in the hands" of someone else. Hopefully you guys get value out of those videos too!

The Downfall of Overlanding: How Social Media Changed Everything

The Downfall of Overlanding: How Social Media Changed Everything

In this episode of the podcast, I wanted to talk about something that has been bothering me for a while. Sure, I'll probably get some hate in the comments for this, but those are exactly the people I don't care about. Most people act like they know everything and that there's only one way to build an overlanding rig, or use a dual battery system, or when solar is the right option, but the real answer is that there are a million variables and everyone's set up will be different. So, will you be a negative influence in the space? Trying to make yourself feel better about your set up while diminishing others in a vain attempt to feel superior? Or, will you help me grow the love of Overlanding and dispersed camping while supporting and educating folks just trying to get into the hobby? The choice is yours, but watch the episode before commenting below. Thanks for watching and, as always, thanks for trying to be a positive force in the Overlanding community!

Minimalist Overlanding Strategies (Tips, Tricks, and Ideas for Reducing Your Camping Gear)

Minimalist Overlanding Strategies (Tips, Tricks, and Ideas for Reducing Your Camping Gear)

Welcome to season 6 and a ton of new content to come in 2024! Appreciate all the support over the last few years and I'm excited to continue to ramp up the quality and content of the podcast in the year to come!

In this week's episode of the podcast, I wanted to talk a bit about some tips and ideas for prioritizing and reducing your gear when Overlanding. It's really easy to get sucked into wanting/needing a ton of gear and then a quick overnighter turns into a 45 minute set up and tear down with lots of unnecessary stuff.

If you like lots of stuff, that's fine! But, if you're like me and getting a little fed up with feeling like you need a ton of gear for every trip, check out the full episode for some tips and tricks for reducing your clutter in your set up.

I'm super curious to hear from you all on your thoughts. If you're watching on YouTube, post up in the comments below. Avoid These Common Rookie Mistakes: Dispersed Camping and Overlanding Tips!

In this episode, I'm going to talk through some tips for rookie mistakes (that I've made multiple times) and how to avoid them. So, if you're newer to Overlanding or dispersed camping, there should be some good info here for you. And, if you've been doing it for a while, you may get a chuckle out of my mistakes also.

I'll cover topics like erring on the side of caution when Overlanding (especially when solo), being prepared and bringing enough and the right recovery gear, and the importance of researching and paying attention to trails, signs, and whether you're on a legal trail or not.

So, if you want to learn more, check out the full episode!

Off-Road Essentials: Why Recovery Gear (and knowing how to use it) Is So Important For Overlanding

Off-Road Essentials: Why Recovery Gear (and knowing how to use it) Is So Important For Overlanding

In this week's episode, I'm going to talk through a situation I recently found myself in where I got my new truck helplessly stuck. I'll talk through what happened and how it happened, what recovery gear we ended up using to get me out, and what we all learned as a result of getting stuck and having to recover me.

So, if you're skeptical about bringing much recovery gear with you when you go on a trip (even to local, gravel forest service roads) check out the full episode for reasons why it's important.

The Basics: Things to Think About When Outfitting and Payload Strategies for Overlanders

The Basics: Things to Think About When Outfitting and Payload Strategies for Overlanders

I've been seeing some more and more talk about payload when outfitting and setting up Overlanding builds. Honestly, this isn't a topic I've thought about a ton in the past as I always assumed that even with an RTT and drawer system, I wouldn't be anywhere near the max payload.

However, there's a lot to think about and a lot of factors that go into payload and how your vehicle carries it. So, in this episode of the podcast, I'm going to talk a bit about that to hopefully plant a seed with other newer Overlanders to think about this issue and to make good decisions.

As I mentioned in the episode, Nathan at Outdoor Auto has a really great episode diving much deeper into payload, so if you want to learn significantly more, check out his video here and subscribe to his channel because he makes great content: https://youtu.be/_eOBiZcU3sg?si=c076YroIUB_5Yk-8

On this week's episode of the podcast, I keep seeing a ton of people arguing about what Overlanding is or isn't and who's doing it on all the Overlanding related group on Facebook. Which reminded me that I just got back from a 5 day trip through Illinois, Wisconsin, and Michigan where we dispersed camped every night and while I could have worried about whether it was technically Overlanding or not, I didn't. I just went, had fun, and explored. So, I wanted to talk a bit about why you should stop worrying about what everything thinks "counts" and just go explore. And if you're new to Overlanding and it seem intimidating, I've got some helpful tips to get you over that fear or concern so you can learn to get further and further out there in the future!

Overlanding 2.0: How Electric Vehicles Are Changing the Game

Overlanding 2.0: How Electric Vehicles Are Changing the Game

In this week's episode of the podcast, I'm jumping into a somewhat controversial topic, which is EV's and Overlanding. If you've spent any time on Overlanding forums or Facebook groups, you've probably seen all the arguing and hate for and against electrical vehicles in Overlanding.

You may have seen the Rivian R1S that completed the Rubicon trail and all of the "Well, did it make it to a charger after the trail?" comments.

I personally think that the future of Overlanding is pretty exciting with the addition of these new technologies, but it may not be exactly what you're thinking.

So, check out the whole episode (and listen until the end to hear my final thoughts on where I think it's going in the next 10-20 years) and then hop over to the other social channels to drop your thoughts on the episode!

Optimizing your Overlanding Trip Prep - Vehicle Maintenance, Gear Packing, Checklists

Optimizing your Overlanding Trip Prep - Vehicle Maintenance, Gear Packing, Checklists

On this week's episode of the podcast, I'm talking a bit about what I've learned over the years when prepping for Overlanding trips.

What things do you need to be aware of if you have an older vehicle? What if you have a new vehicle? What changes, prep and packing-wise if you're going on a 3 day trip versus a 2 week trip?

I'll talk through a bit of all of that in this episode, so whether you're new to Overlanding or always trying to optimize your prep, there should be some helpful stuff here for you.

New Truck, Old Tricks: Is It Possible To Be A Budget Overlander In A Brand New Truck?

In this week's episode of the podcast, I've heard from subscribers that it's tough to call myself a "budget overlander" after just getting a new truck. So, I wanted to talk a bit about that. Are there financial advantages to buying a new or newer vehicle over saving some money up front on an older, "budget" Overland rig? Let's talk about pros and cons.

How the 2024 Land Cruiser, Tacoma, and Others Will Change Overlanding

In this episode of the podcast, I'm going to chat through how I think all of these new factory built, capable vehicles will change Overlanding. From the 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser, to the 2024 Toyota Tacoma, to the 2024 Chevy Colorado, to the new Ford Bronco, all of them are changing the way manufacturers look at building offroad vehicles.

Two Types of Overlanding: Experience VS. Goal Oriented Exploring (Which do you prefer?)

Two Types of Overlanding: Experience VS. Goal Oriented Exploring (Which do you prefer?)

In this week's episode, I recently returned from a 2 week long trip where we covered thousands of miles and it really made me think about the reason we do this thing called Overlanding.

It seems to me that there are two types of Overlanding. Experience based, where we focus more on having fun and finding new things and less about hitting certain points or achieving trail "completion" and then the Goal oriented version which is basically the opposite. Granted, you'll have experiences in both types and you'll get to explore and see lots of amazing things, but to me, it's more about the focus of your journey.

So, today I wanted to talk through those thoughts a bit and also wanted to hear from you all! Let me know your thoughts in the comments below!

Overcoming the Distance: Long Drive Essentials for Overlanders

Overcoming the Distance: Long Drive Essentials for Overlanders

This week, I wanted to talk through how I deal with (and even enjoy) super long distance Overlanding trips. As much as we'd all like to just take scenic drives off pavement, sometimes, in order to get into the vicinity that we want to explore, we have to hit the highway, often for an extended period of time.

After driving 21ish hours each way to go to Wyoming a couple of weeks ago, I recorded this episode of the podcast talking through some tips and tricks for not only staying alert, but enjoying these longer trips.

Check out the full episode for all the tips and hacks!

Car Camping vs. Overlanding - What's the Difference?

In this week's episode of the podcast I wanted to touch a bit on what the differences are between car camping and Overlanding. We all see it all the time on different Overlanding Facebook groups, forums, and more but is there actually a difference between car camping and Overlanding or are they basically the same thing? Overlanding in the Digital World: Balancing Tech and Adventure

Overlanding in the Digital World: Balancing Tech and Adventure

In this week's episode, I'm talking about technology and its impact on Overlanding. In all the online forums and social media groups, I see people going one of two ways.

They either love technology and embrace it while utilizing it to improve their trips in a variety of ways or they hate it and think it takes away from the experience of getting away from it all.

So, in this episode, I'm going to give you a rundown of how I think technology impacts Overlanding as a whole. Head over to my other social channels (link below) to join the conversation and share your thoughts on this topic!
