The Alvin Galloway Show, (TAGS), 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., on listen2krdp.com and KRDP 90.7 FM in the East Valley.

TAGS, the segment is: "CatPhished -- How to Spot AI and Phishing Scams" through a press briefing hosted by Ethnic Media Services and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC).

This second of three briefings for EMS with the Federal Trade Commission will scope out some of the newest ways scammers are using email and text messages to try to get you to pay them or steal your passwords, account numbers or Social Security numbers -- called "phishing."

Once they get that information, they can get access to your email, bank or other accounts -- or sell your information to other scammers. Scammers launch millions of phishing attacks like these every day -- and they're often successful.

Tapping into new and evolving technology, they also use AI to catfish people into a family emergency situation by cloning a family member's voice. People think they recognize the cry for help and turn over their money to complete strangers. The best defense is to spread the word about phishing so your audiences don't get fooled.

Speakers include: Benjamin Davidson, Attorney, Division of Marketing Practices, Federal Trade Commission; Rosario Mendez, Attorney, Consumer & Business Education, Federal Trade Commission.

Speakers this week will focus on DV via technology, coercive control, policy at the California state level, and policy changes emerging from the Biden administration, including the expansion of the Violence Against Women Act and the White House plan. Speakers will also address whether immigrants are more vulnerable to abuse because they lack the resources and support for help.

Panelist include Jenna Lane, Communications Officer, Blue Shield Foundation of California; Pallavi Dhawan, Director of Domestic Violence Policy, Los Angeles City Attorney’s Office; Deborah Tucker, president of the Board of Directors, the National Center on Domestic and Sexual Violence; and Eria Olsen, Director of the Safety Net program, National Network to End Domestic Violence.)

This segment of TAGS is: "Exploring Outer Space - Why We Do it, What We Learn ,” through a briefing hosted by Ethnic Media Services.

The James Webb Telescope recently brought us new images of old stars and constellations, filling our minds with wonder. Looking at one of the most impactful of those photographs, one of our panelists wrote:

“The endless richness of the deep field image, jam-packed with stars and galaxies, covering a tiny patch of sky, tells the history of the universe.”

The images also filled us with questions. Is there other life in the universe? What kind? What do other planets look like? Will we take regular trips to the Moon and Mars in the future?

All of those questions are being explored right now by several countries, including the United States, that have been investing in different projects and technologies that help us look beyond our own planet.

One bigger question is: Can space exploration, in all its facets, help humanity discover the answer to essential questions, including finding the keys to our survival on earth?

To explore those issues, Panelist include: Alexandra de Castro, Science and Technology Communicator, PASQAL; Marcio Melendez, Principal Astronomical Optics Scientist, Space Telescope Science Institute (STScl), Baltimore, Maryland; Nicole Arulanantham, Giacconi Postdoctoral Fellow, Space Telescope Science Institute (STScl), Baltimore, Maryland.

The Alvin Galloway Show, (TAGS), 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., on listen2krdp.com.
This segment of TAGS is: "Labor Shortages Fuel Inflation – Why U.S. Economic Growth Needs More Immigrants,” through a briefing hosted by Ethnic Media Services.

A number of economists, demographers and other experts are sounding the alarm: the country needs immigrants – from meat packing to home building to STEM professionals to nurses – to keep pace with the job-creating post-pandemic economy and long-term economic growth. While public discussion focuses on the estimated 2 million border crossings for the fiscal year – not the same as 2 million people – the economists are focusing on the fact that about 10 to 15% of job openings that typically employ immigrant or foreign-born workers, are still vacant.

And yet, the legal immigration system is in dire straits, there’s a monstrous backlog of green cards, generations of people are waiting for legalization, the asylum system is virtually paralyzed and there’s absolutely no appetite in Congress – mostly on one side – to ease restrictions for even the most popular of legal immigrants. Dreamers and STEM PhDs come to mind.

Speakers will explain what’s at stake and why the policy stalemates on immigration can damage the economic recovery and long-term economic health of the USA.

Panelist include: Giovanni Peri, PhD. Professor of Economics at the University of California, Davis, Research Associate of the National Bureau of Economic Research in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and the Founder and Director of the UC Davis Global Migration Center; Julie Collins, CCP, LP, MS Program Director Department of Cardiopulmonary Sciences, College of Health Sciences; Gregory Z. This segment of TAGS is: "Interracial Marriage In a Polarized America” through a press briefing hosted by Ethnic Media Services.

Interracial/intercultural marriages have been on the rise for years in the United States. According to PEW, about 17% of new marriages are interracial couples. Many of these unions produce children that are multiracial and multicultural. With open racism on the rise and challenges to personal and privacy rights, what are the life realities for interracial couples and their mixed-race offspring? What does the research say about public opinion and hidden biases? And can these families themselves help defeat prejudice in the long term. Experts and researchers discuss data and ideas on the subject, and a multiracial family shares about what it takes to make it and thrive in our increasingly polarized society.

Panelist include: Justin Gest, Associate Professor of Policy and Government at George Mason University’s Schar School of Policy and Government; Allison Skinner Dorkenoo, Assistant Professor of Behavioral and Brain Sciences, Social Psychology at the University of Georgia; Sonia and Richard Kang, a multicultural-multiracial couple that, together, encapsulate African American, Latino and Korean origins and who have 4 multicultural children. The Magnolia State has a special place in my heart, because it is where my parents were born and raised and my siblings and I spent many summers during our childhood.

Mississippi's GOP dominated legislature secured gerrymandered maps that severely undercut the voting power of the state's growing communities of color. But advocates have shifted their sights to local targets like the Harrison County School District and the Gulfport City Council. And they're scoring small but significant victories. "We're anything but a lost cause," says Nsombi Lambright of Unite One Voice. Mississippi mirrors similar efforts by activists across the South.

COVID-19 cases, deaths, and hospitalizations are still prevalent in the United States, according to July 22 data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. More than 2/3 of Americans have tested positive for COVID. This may represent an under-count: more and more people are reporting that their at-home tests are coming back negative even when they are exhibiting clear symptoms of COVID-19. The BA5 subvariant of Omicron is responsible for 78 percent of infections in the US. Is BA5 more transmissible? Is it harder to detect in home-testing kits? Are symptoms of BA5 more severe? How have a mere handful of Americans dodged infection? And is BA2.75 the next threat? Join us for a robust panel discussion with three acclaimed subject matter experts. We will reserve 30 minutes of this week's briefing for Q/A. Reporters, please come armed with lots of questions. Homelessness is among voters' top concerns in cities across the country. This briefing looks at 3 cities that are making dramatic gains in addressing the crisis: In January 2020, Bakersfield achieved "functional zero" chronic homelessness — fewer than 3 people in the community experienced chronic homelessness. Houston placed more than 25,000 people in permanent housing since 2011, resulting in a 64% decrease in homelessness. In 2018, Columbus had a 70% rate of successful housing outcome. Speakers from the frontlines in each city will address the strategies they used and whether they're replicable.

The Alvin Galloway Show (TAGS), this segment is "Miami-Dade Spotlights National Trends-- Rise in Mental Health Challenges for Children & Youth," through a press briefing hosted by Ethnic Media Services. Every mass shooting over the last three months has been a trigger for fear and anxiety among young people, says one psychiatric nurse in Miami-Dade about the kids he sees. Medical experts, counselors, parents draw on their expertise and personal experience to explain the rise and to discuss what young people need, what parents and guardians can do, what services people can turn to. Meanwhile, China, Iran and other players are deepening their strategic stakes in the region. As Biden hosts a summit of Latin American leaders (minus those of several key countries, including Mexico, Cuba, Honduras, Venezuela), speakers will assess what the U.S. stakes are in a changing Latin America.
