20. Bringing Food Freedom To Your Local Church With Nicole Mesita, RD Of Body BLoved

Have you ever wanted to bring the message of food freedom to your local church community? Body BLoved has created a wonderful resource for you! In this episode, we talk about so many good things, including the importance of getting curious about where we learned our current beliefs around food and body image, the value in starting small and respecting our own limitations as well as encouragement for how to bring the food freedom message to your local church community.

More about Nicole Mesita, RD:

Nicole Mesita works in private practice as a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist and is the co-founder of "Body Bloved" a resource for Christian women who want to discover healing relationships with food, fitness, and body image through the unconditional love of God. She is a Mom of two girls and serves alongside her beloved husband in their local church. Through her education and diverse career experiences, God prompted her to help people of all shapes and sizes discover health and peace with their body through the unconditional love of Jesus. Nicole most enjoys spending time around a table and eating delicious food with the people she loves.

More about the BodyBLoved Group Food Freedom Bible Study:

Body BLoved recently launched a group curriculum of their popular online course "Food Freedom Bible Study." The curriculum was made so that anyone could take the non-diet message and share it with their local church. You don't need to be an expert in this material and you don't need to have the perfect relationship with food or your body to bring this message, you just need a willing heart to see yourselves and others set free from the lies the enemy tries to use to keep us in bondage. This is an opportunity to create a safe place and community among other believers who want freedom.

18. Living Free From Food and Body Image Struggles With Kassandra Baker

Kassandra Baker joins me for this episode, and it's a goooood one! We dive into Kassandra's personal experience with eating disorders and how life is different now that she is recovered. We also discuss navigating weight changes throughout the healing process and why identity is so central to living free from food and body image struggles. Kassandra also shares a powerful testimony of her experience of the Gospel and invites us to have our own experience.

Kassandra's definition of the Beauty Idol:

  • Worship of the current cultural definition of beauty above God.
  • Going to unhealthy lengths to fit the beauty standard.
  • Choosing not to do something (trip, job, exercise, etc.) because of how you look.
  • Finding your identity in how you look rather than who you are in Christ.
  • Thinking less of someone who doesn’t meet the cultural beauty standards.

Book mentioned: The Freedom of Self Forgetfulness

More about Kassandra:

Kassandra Baker knows what it’s like to have a love/hate relationship with food and her body.  It’s her own personal experience and recovery from two eating disorders that drive her passion to encourage women to find freedom.  She is a Certified Health, Life, and Mental Health Coach and Public Speaker, helping women who are trapped in unhealthy habits such as perfectionism, disordered eating, legalism, and people-pleasing, so they can LIVE FREE in Christ.

14. Sacred Rhythms: Sabbath And Rule Of Life

14. Sacred Rhythms: Sabbath And Rule Of Life

Welcome to the seventh and final episode of our podcast book club series on Sacred Rhythms by Ruth Haley Barton. I'm joined by Kylie Mitchell, MPH, RD of ImmaEatThat to discuss Chapter 8: Sabbath and Chapter 9: Rule of Life. This is our second podcast book club series -- the first was on Breaking Free from Body Shame by Jess Connolly and aired on Kylie's ImmaEatThat Podcast. We landed on Sacred Rhythms for our next book because as we were talking about the importance of renaming our bodies as good and making peace with food and body image in our last book club, we kept coming back to this idea of slowing down and finding space to be with God.

In this episode, we talk about:

  • If we do not allow for a rhythm of rest in our overly busy lives, illness becomes our Sabbath – our accidents created Sabbath for us
  • How we long for rest, for sabbath, for joy, for delight
  • The idea that sabbath is more than just a day’s rest - it is a way of orienting one’s life around a pattern of working six days and then resting on the seventh
  • The importance of honoring the limitations of our humanness through sabbath
  • Components of sabbath -- what to include/exclude
  • What a rule of life is, which is simply a pattern of attitudes, behaviors and practices that are regular and routine and are intended to produce a certain quality of life and character
  • How a rule of life seeks to answer the question: "How do I want to live so I can be who I want to be?"
  • Practical examples of where Kylie and I are in developing our own rules of life
  • And more!

Thank you to all who have listened to the entire series -- we highly recommend listening from the beginning so you can get a full picture of these rhythms and of course reading the book for yourself :-)

12. Sacred Rhythms: Self-Examination And Discernment

12. Sacred Rhythms: Self-Examination And Discernment

Welcome to the sixth episode of our podcast book club series on Sacred Rhythms by Ruth Haley Barton. I'm joined by Kylie Mitchell, MPH, RD of ImmaEatThat to discuss Chapter 6: Self-Examination and Chapter 7: Discernment. We're excited to talk through this book with you.

Quite frankly, this episode was the most challenging for both Kylie and I but not because these practices aren't important. We find them hard to put into words and we are both very much still processing them for our own lives.

In this episode, we talk about:

  • How we all long to be known and loved unconditionally - the problem is most of us aren’t willing to be seen so completely.
  • Psalm 139, which begins by acknowledging that God has already searched me and already knows me through and through. There is nothing I can do and no place I can go that is beyond God’s presence.
  • Examen of consciousness
  • Examine of conscience
  • The importance of self-examination in the context of eating disorder recovery
  • Discernment as a way of seeing that eventually permeates our whole life. It is the journey from spiritual blindness (not seeing God anywhere or seeing him only where we expect to) to spiritual sight (finding God everywhere, especially where we least expect him)
  • The idea that we cannot force discernment. When it is given it is always a gift. We can find ways to open ourselves to it.
  • Being indifferent to anything but God's will
  • The importance of love guiding our discernment process

The quote I reference at the end of the episode:

Discernment in its fullness takes a practiced heart, fine-tuned to hear the word of God and the single-mindedness to follow that word in love. It is truly a gift from God, but not one dropped from the skies fully formed. It is a gift cultivated by a prayerful life and the search for self-knowledge. - Ernest Larkin

11. Healing Your Relationship With Food And Body Image Is Worth It with Julia Townsend, RYT

11. Healing Your Relationship With Food And Body Image Is Worth It with Julia Townsend, RYT

Have you ever wanted to hear someone's story of moving from disordered eating to food freedom and peace? Well today's the day! I'm interviewing Julia Townsend, Registered Yoga Teacher and Mindfulness Coach who happens to be a past client of mine. She shares all about how she used to be trapped by obsessive food and exercise thoughts and behaviors (which is super normal in our culture and nothing to be ashamed of!) and how she's moved to a place of well-being and rest, caring for the body she knows was made good.

In this episode we discuss:

  • How Julia's relationship with food, body image and exercise has transformed in the last year
  • The hardest part of recovery
  • What she would say to someone who is currently struggling with food, body image and compulsive exercise
  • How healing her relationship with food allowed her to pursue a new dream (her yoga business!)
  • How God was integral to her healing process
  • and so much more!

More about Julia:

Julia Townsend is a 500-hour registered yoga teacher, mindfulness coach, and mom to three amazing little boys. From a young age, she has been following Christ and incorporates yoga and mindfulness as spiritual practices in her personal faith. Her passion is to help other women embrace joy in their lives and know that they are wonderfully made. Her experiences recovering from disordered eating gave Julia a passion to share with others that God made our bodies good, despite what diet culture tells us. In her spare time, Julia loves to read, write poems, run, practice yoga, and most importantly, spend time with her husband, boys, and pets.

10. Sacred Rhythms: Honoring The Body

10. Sacred Rhythms: Honoring The Body

Side note - this is probably my favorite episode so far in this series!

Welcome to the fifth episode of our podcast book club series on Sacred Rhythms by Ruth Haley Barton. I'm joined by Kylie Mitchell, MPH, RD of ImmaEatThat to discuss Chapter 5: Honoring the Body. We're excited to talk through this book with you.

In this episode, we talk about:

  • How honoring the body is a spiritual discipline, just like prayer or bible reading
  • The fact that our bodies have been made good, in the image of God
  • The story in 1 Kings 19 where God gives Elijah rest and food before attending to anything else
  • How we are embodied beings who experience God in and through our bodies
  • How this practice helps us find our way between the excess of a culture that glorifies and objectifies our bodies and the excess of Christian culture that has often denigrated and ignored the body
  • What it means to listen to our bodies
  • The significance of the God of the universe taking on human bodily form (Jesus), dying and then resurrecting in a body
  • What it practically looks like to shift from trying to be the smallest version of yourself to taking care of yourself/body

Disclaimer: Please be advised part of this podcast is not suitable for young ears.

Welcome to the fourth episode of our podcast book club series on Sacred Rhythms by Ruth Haley Barton. I'm joined by Kylie Mitchell, MPH, RD of ImmaEatThat to discuss Chapter 4: Prayer. We're excited to talk through this book with you.

In this episode, we talk about:

  • Longing for something more in our prayer life
  • How the fundamental purpose of prayer is to deepen our intimacy with God
  • The deeper invitation of intimacy in prayer to move beyond words with God
  • How intimacy requires risk – God seeing you as you are, not as you want Him to see you as
  • Discovering your breath prayer, which is an expression of our hearts deepest yearning coupled with the name for God that is most meaningful and intimate for us at this time
  • Coming to the conclusion that all of life is prayer and the other disciples are other forms of praying

7. Lent, Diet Culture And Sacred Spaces With Leslie Schilling, MA, RDN, CSCS, CEDS-S

7. Lent, Diet Culture And Sacred Spaces With Leslie Schilling, MA, RDN, CSCS, CEDS-S

In this episode I'm talking to Leslie Schilling, MA, RDN, CSCS, CEDS-S about all things diet culture in the sacred and safe places. We discuss fasting, lent and why it's important to separate the secular (diet culture) from the sacred (our relationship with God). We also discuss why our body size does not determine our worthiness, grace and so much more.

One important note: our aim is not to condemn the church but to help people understand that it's quite normal for the church to be influenced by the world (in this case, diet culture) when it comes to body size, nutrition and our food choices. I hope you find this episode encouraging and helpful.

More about Leslie:

Leslie Schilling, MA, RDN, CSCS, CEDS-S, owns a Las Vegas-based private practice specializing in nutrition counseling for families, people with disordered eating concerns, professional athletes, and performers. Leslie has served as a performance nutrition consultant for Cirque du Soleil® and the NBA and an expert contributor to U.S. News & World Report. With her warm, compassionate, and entertaining personality, Leslie has been featured in media outlets like Health, Women's Health, Self, Pregnancy Magazine, The Yoga Journal, Bicycling, BuzzFeed, the Huffington Post, and HGTV. As a registered dietitian certified as an eating disorder specialist and supervisor, Leslie spends much of her time supporting professionals across the nation through supervision. When she's not spending time hiking or playing board games with her family, you can find her sharing non-diet messages on social media and speaking platforms. Leslie is passionate about educating ministry, military, health, medical, and fitness professionals about the harms of typical dieting behaviors. You may know Leslie best as the creator of the Born To Eat® approach and co-author of the award-winning book, Born To Eat.

6. Sacred Rhythms: Scripture

6. Sacred Rhythms: Scripture

Welcome to the third episode of our podcast book club series on Sacred Rhythms by Ruth Haley Barton. I'm joined by Kylie Mitchell, MPH, RD of ImmaEatThat to discuss Chapter 3: Scripture. We're excited to talk through this book with you.

In this episode, we talk about:

  • Honesty about feeling ambivalent to scripture at times
  • Western culture’s tendency to approach Scriptures like a textbook where we are the master and we can control the text
  • God's desires for us to read scripture for relationship and revelation with Him
  • The powerful experience of paying attention to our internal dynamics while reading rather than just reading scripture for information gathering
  • The practice of Lectio Divina, which is a slower, more reflective reading of scripture that allows God to initiate with us and creates space for us to respond fully

This episode also includes a guided Lectio Divina on Psalm 1. We hope you are encouraged.

  • Giving ourselves the space to acknowledge what we're feeling and how that invites God in
  • Why solitude is important for disordered eating recovery
  • Solitude as a place for desire - the longing for solitude is the longing for God
