I learned this over time. 3:20: Dr. Amanda:How did you first battle these thoughts? 3:25: Trina: I experienced a lot of tragic losses when I was younger. I lost my sister and dad within a year and then all of a sudden, how do you deal with this? 9: 45: Dr Amanda:Did you have anybody to confide in during the hard time 9:50: Trina: I didn’t think I could. I feared reaching out to anyone and I was afraid what would happen after that more than I feared death itself. 11: 15: Dr Amanda: Did you ever get to share this with anybody? 11:20: Trina: No, not even my best friend of 15 years knew. No one really knew who I was. 12: 50: Dr. Amanda:What are barriers when people try to reach out for help? 12:55 Trina: It was feeling like this is something I had to fix the stigma and mentality that everyone will look at you like you are too weak. 14:35: Dr Amanda: What are some suggestions you want to provide for those who are struggling? 14:45: Trina: Back then, I had God and I knew of Jesus but I didn’t know he can make you whole. 20:15: Dr Amanda:Is there any other wisdom tips that you think is important for the audience to overcome suicide ideation or thoughts? 20:20: Trina: I didn’t know that there is healing and that God speaks to you.

Connection over perfection is now important to me. Episode # 9: How to Tips to Prevent Sexual Exploitation and Sex Trafficking
Tashina Kabbaz is a doctoral student at Lehigh University in the area of educational leadership. She also is an educational and cultural specialist for VAST the Vehicle Against Sex Trafficking in the Lehigh Valley. If you or someone you know needs help, call the National Human Trafficking Hotline toll-free hotline, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week at 1-888-373-7888 to speak with a specially trained Anti-Trafficking Hotline Advocate. 4:00: Dr. Amanda: I want you to be aware of how you are feeling as we discuss the very difficult topic of sexual exploitation. We want to see communities to rise up about ending sexual exploitation and trafficking 4:30: Dr. Amanda: What is sex trafficking? 4:40: Tashina: According to the Trafficking Victims protection act of 200, ST lives under the term human trafficking. 7:30: Tashina: The average range of sex trafficking, arguably, is age 11 through 15. 8:55:Tashina: Individuals who are sexually exploited are often sexually abused in childhood. They experience an ongoing retriggering of trauma due to vulnerable youth risk factors. 9:50: Dr. Amanda: We do not recognize a lot of children have had abuse in their past; sexual, physical, or emotional abuse based on the literature. Trauma and mental health markers stand out to groomers-such as lack of confidence in these children. 11:45: Tashina: Reveals tips, such as how youth who are not confident or do not receive words such as ‘you are beautiful’ and receive it, may indicate to a groomer of sex trafficking. 14:00: Dr. Amanda: Is there anything relevant to the Lehigh Valley to support parents 14:10: Tashina: Lehigh Valley is In close proximity to major cities and these routes make it easier to exploit children. The Polaris Project is one place to check out. Pennsylvania is in the top 10 states based on the trafficking hotline. 15:45: Dr. Amanda: What are some signs to look for in the community about sexual exploitation? 17:15: Tashina: VAST works with the community to look for specific signs for different individuals or organizations. 18:30: Tashina: She provides examples of what to look for or what she has seen in the community. 19:40: Dr. Amanda: What are ways to support women and men who are survivors of sex trafficking? 19:50: Tashina: It is important to have difficult conversations in order to make a change. 22:30: Tashina: There are many ways to support survivors of sex trafficking and encourage them to get support.

Being ignored feels like rejection. This can happen with family relationships. 3:55: Dr. Amanda: What is one way you experienced abandonment and rejection? 4:15: Elaine: I was given up for adoption at birth so I began with rejection and abandonment. 5:47: Elaine: What happened was that because of his lie taught me not to tell the truth and be whoever somebody else wanted me to be. I wore a mask…” 7:15: Elaine: When in my study, I heard two words. Identity. Abuse. I went, What is that? My identity was abused before I had formed my own identity. I adopted an identity based on all of this rejection and lived that out in my life. 8:25: Elaine: I created Identity Abuse Busters. This is at identityabuse.com. 10:35: Dr A: What were some of the hard thoughts and feelings during this journey? 10:35: Elaine: The truth versus a feeling. I was believing a lie even though it felt really true. Is what I am thinking based on what I am thinking or what I am feeling? 11:22: Elaine: Some of the feelings you have are normal based on your situation. Do I think about how I feel? 11:55: Dr. Amanda: Do you think based on complex trauma that identity is a safety blanket walking in this belief that if it got pulled away you would have to go to that hard part? 12:15? Elaine: I think that the journey of healing can be scary. It can be perceived to be so scary that it can be avoided. The question is what did I believe about myself about the situation? 13:Dr. Amanda: Some people believe if I go through the pain I will be more of a mess going through that or the fear of going there it's painful but then comes freedom 14:07: Elaine: How do we open up conversations that no one wants to talk about it? Some topics create a sense of insecurity so it is hard to have that discussion. 14:55:Elaine: I also had to really look at what do I believe and what does the church have to see if I can stay in the church. 16:07: Dr. Amanda: Did you have anyone you trusted during your journey? 16:15: Elaine: No, not really. In the era I grew up there wasn’t a talk about sexual abuse. 17:55: Dr. Amanda: There can be silence on sexual abuse in the church as a counselor do you see a change? 18:08: Elaine: The church needs to understand its role and where to send people. The more pastors get the help they are more inclined to help people as well. 18:20: Dr. Amanda: If we do not have the training we may say something to kids that may do more harm than good. It is important for different organizations to know how to respond to mental health and trauma. 19:30: Elaine: As a leader of any kind in the community to have resources to help the individual and refer them to the appropriate authorities. One of the biggest challenges is knowing when you don’t know and be ok to refer them and normalize it. 21:35: Dr. Amanda: Are there any other tips for people who are struggling with rejection and abandonment? 23:45: Elaine: You get to choose what you think about yourself. This one story is very different. She had the goal of losing weight and a healthier version of herself. Description of the Episode with Tameka Anderson Time/Detail 3:35: Dr. Amanda: What is one topic that you find people struggle with the most? 3:43: Tameka: Racism is a topic that people struggle to discuss. 4:20: Dr. Amanda: What was your hardest conversation that you had to address in the area of racism? 4:40 Tameka: I had a conversation with someone that was not African American and our conversation was difficult because I had to come to a place of not being defensive but also stand my ground yet not being a threat. 5:58: Dr. Amanda How do you approach hard conversations when you do not get any headway or no one is listening? 6:10: Tameka: When you come to it in a place of empathy it is the highest place of knowledge. You are not coming from an ego place or need to be right. 7:15: Dr. Amanda: In conversation, can you listen to somebody even if you do not agree? 7:25: Tameka: I do not use the terminology to agree to disagree but willing to listen to a person’s thought process and empathize with them. 9:00:Dr. Amanda: How do you use effective questions? 9:05: Tameka: It depends on the situation. 11:50: Dr. Amanda: What do you do if you get upset during a conversation? 12:00: Tameka: What I know works is to breathe. It really does work. 14:55: Dr. Amanda: Have you ever had to end a conversation because you both need to come back? 15:05: Tameka: I am diligent to only engage in hard conversations with other people that I can engage if they are upset or not. 16:10: Dr. Amanda: Did you end up following up with those conversations? 16:25:Tameka: Usually no, especially when saying to come back to that conversation If at all. 17:15:Dr. Amanda: What do you do when you go in circles in conversation? 17:22: Tameka: I tend to bring the attention back to the circle I notice. 19:15: Dr. Amanda: What were some of the hardest lessons that you learned? 19:25: Tameka: The first thing that I learned is that I am not as patient as I hoped I was. That is one of the main things that I have learned. 22:30: Dr. Amanda: What are any books or resources on how to have hard conversations? 22:30: Tameka: I wrote The Confident Leader about how to engage with others and feel confident. Episode 4: How to Build Reading Skills with Dr. Emily Sharp

Description of the Episode with Dr. Emily Sharp Time Stamps 2:55: Dr. Amanda: Emily tell us about your background in the science of reading 3:00: Dr. Emily Sharp shares about her experiences leading her to recognize the importance of learning the science of reading. 4:35: Dr. Emily: It was critical to get training from the Orton Gillingham Academy as well as LETRs training. 7:05: Dr. Amanda: What are the most important components of reading? 7:45: Dr. Emily: We know the most important components of reading. Recently, we know the largest component of comprehension we now realize is background knowledge. 9:55: Emily: I had a big insight at a recent PA Literacy conference with Dr. Stephen Dykstra. He said if you want to help a child who experienced trauma help them to read. Reading is a piece of being able to make connections with your emotions and connect it to what happened to you. 11:50: Is explicit reading instruction important for all students? 11:58: Not all students need the same amount of explicit reading instruction. You do make sure the kids explicitly connect it to prior knowledge. 16:42: Dr. Amanda: What have you found most effective in teaching reading? 16:55: Dr. Emily continues to discuss the importance of training and student engagement throughout instruction. 22:05: Dr. Amanda: What are some practical ways for parents to teach their children how to read? 22:18: Dr. Emily Sharp: Parents can help their children develop oral language skills. It is important to play with language using rhyming and singing. 25:35: Dr. Amanda: Are there any additional ways to teach reading to children? 25:40: Dr. Emily: We want to expose children to text. Show children that there are syllables in words. Talk about how to use letter formation and how children use play with drawings. Connect with the kids about what they are learning. 27:23: Dr. Amanda: Ask specific questions to students: What did you read today? What did you learn today? 28:05: Dr. Amanda: What would you share with parents who do not think explicit instruction is necessary? 28:30: Dr. Emily Sharp: We have confirmed many hypotheses with fMRI studies of the brain.
