In November, a select group of Amplify mentees traveled to Kentucky to learn more about the Thoroughbred industry, visit farms and facilities, and yes, pet some horses! Paola Castro and Sydney Patrick were two of four high-achieving Amplify mentees selected to receive travel awards to visit Kentucky during the breeding stock sales season. On this episode of the podcast, Sydney and Paola share how they became interested in horse racing (hint: there are some excellent movies out there to watch), their experiences in the Amplify Horse Racing Mentorship Program, takeaways from their trip to Kentucky, and what they hope to accomplish in the Thoroughbred industry. Starting his career as an intern in Marketing and Publicity at Santa Anita in 2002, Nate Newby is now the racetrack's Senior Vice President and General Manager. And he's done a little bit of everything along the way, from working on the set of Seabiscuit – one of the highest grossing horse movies of all time – to organizing nine Breeders' Cups, and retraining off-track Thoroughbreds in his spare time. Delaina Stenchever joins Amplify after completing a Bachelor of Arts in journalism with a broadcast emphasis and further specializing in sports journalism, and double minoring in biology and sports management from the University of Arizona. While in college she worked with two different radio stations in Arizona, one as an intern with an all-sports station, and the horse racing show Post Time with Aaron Vercruyss and Corey La Russo for the sports betting segment, Dialled in with Delaina. Delaina started working at Rillito Park, a small mixed breed track, for their 2022 season as a production assistant and emcee. After graduation she worked at Del Mar as the Press Box Steward and began fostering new connections for her future. From there she got her job with FanDuel as the Partner Production Supervisor for horse racing, helping manage and supervise all in-show elements from sales contracts to sportsbook and casino deliverables. She also continues working towards her on-air career as a sports reporter.

Delaina's love for sports started at a young age going to football, and baseball games and attending races at Emerald Downs in Washington State. Football stood out to her for a long time, and she worked with the University of Arizona's football sports medicine team for four years. Her love for sports continued through high school where she played different sports while also competing in equestrian sports. In college, she competed with the Intercollegiate Horse Shows Association (IHSA) allowing her to continue to develop as a rider. Now she spends her free time riding at a Hunter/Jumper show barn when she is not preparing for an upcoming work week of deliverables or reporting. 

The Triple Crown – and horse racing in general – is filled to the brim with emotion and beautiful imagery. Author, researcher and historian Jennifer Kelly tries to convey emotion through words on a page in her new book The Foxes of Belair, about the father-son Triple Crown-winning duo Gallant Fox and Omaha. She explains how she takes the viewer on a trip through time to make it seem like century-old events happened just yesterday. And for Mage's co-owner and bloodstock agent Ramiro Restrepo, winning the Kentucky Derby a month ago still feels like it was yesterday. Hear from him later on in the episode about his 15 year journey from the Tampa Bay Downs winner's circle to standing under the spires of Churchill Downs, as well as his family's decades-long efforts to succeed in horse racing.

When considering a career in the Thoroughbred industry, it is important to understand the varying perspectives on animals being used in sport and for entertainment purposes. From the 1970s to present day, ethics in horse racing have evolved, and what was once accepted in the past is now part of this era’s growing list of taboos. From fairness and integrity to animal welfare, this presentation by Phil O'Hara, assistant professor of practice at the University of Arizona Race Track Industry Program, will define ethics, guide the audience through several eras of horse racing, and explore how the industry has addressed ethical dilemmas. And stick around, because Robert Hartman joins us later to talk about RTIP and how prospective students can get into the program.

The National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame (NMRHOF) educator Matt Reichel will take viewers on a "ride through time" of horse racing in America, from humble beginnings in the 1600s to a national pastime today. Using the NMRHOF's historical galleries as a baseline, Matt will cover different eras of horse racing, including the Colonial era, Pre-Civil War era and the Post-Civil War era.

The mission of the NMRHOF is "to preserve and promote the history of Thoroughbred racing in America and honor the sport’s most accomplished participants in the Official National Thoroughbred Racing Hall of Fame."

It's a week after Valentine's Day, and a week after Greenmount Farm's Sabrina Moore's Knicks Go baby was born! Anna Ford joins the crew to talk about the importance of aftercare, as well as promote the Amplify Junior event at New Vocations. New Vocations is the oldest and largest Thoroughbred and Standardbred adoption facility in the United States, and Ford serves as its thoroughbred program director. Co-host Kaitlin Christopherson has a personal connection as she adopted Charles, her off track Thoroughbred, from New Vocations. This episode was recorded prior to the Aug. 27 Amplify Junior event.
