My Favorite Pass Time — AMSAT

My Favorite Pass Time — AMSAT

By Denny - K5DCC

As an Extra Class licensed amateur radio operator, one of my favorite communications modes is AMSAT satellites. I use an Arrow antenna sometimes with just a couple of handheld radios or lately with a Kenwood TM-71a in full duplex mode. It is common to record these passes and review them later for accurate logging. Here is where I want to save my favorite satellite pass times for others to listen to and hear themselves and for contact verification. It's also my efforts as an AMSAT AMBASSADOR to build interest in amateur radio in space.

My neighbor saw me outside with my satellite gear and wanted to learn more. I let her listen in on this pass of AO-91 and explained things to her as it passed.

It's like fishing, folks. Some days are a bust. You can see them but you can't catch one. This is what makes it interesting. Like I say in the intro. Each pass is different is so many ways. Just enjoy the journey. Plus, it's always fun to listen.

I am especially thrilled to have worked KE4ZXW, which is an amateur radio demonstration station located at the Virginia Air and Space Center (VASC), 600 Settlers Landing Road, Hampton, VA ( www.vasc.org ). The station is operated by the VASC Amateur Radio Group, inc and is supported by other local amateur radio clubs. In addition to a History of Amateur Radio Exhibit, the station provides the capability to demonstrate HF, VHF, UHF communications in CW, Voice, and Digital modes, to visitors and school groups. The main feature of the exhibit is the ability to communicate with amateur radio satellites, and with the International Space Station.

Their goals are to demonstrate the Amateur Radio Hobby to visitors, to show school groups how fast technology has changed over the past century, and to encourage students to stay in school, and study Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).

The audio for this episode was taken from a demonstration video of me working Satellite AO-92. This is my kick-off podcast for many more satellite pass recordings which I use for my own benefit to capture and log all my contacts in Logbook Of The World.

Thanks to AI9IN, AA8CH, KI4ASK, AB1OC, N1PEB, W5RKN and WP4T for the contacts on this pass.
