Bouncing Forward with Amy Purdy

Bouncing Forward with Amy Purdy

By Amy Purdy
After losing both my legs at the age of 19 I bounced forward to become a 3-time Paralympic medalist, one of Oprah’s top 100 thought leaders, a New York Times best-selling author, a Dancing with the Stars runner up, and a world-renown motivational speaker.

I’m here to challenge you with one thing: How can you use your current situation to get ahead? How can you not just survive the challenges you are facing but actually thrive because of them.

After all, it's not about bouncing back to who we once were, it's about bouncing forward to all that we can be.

23: Callie & Jeff Dauler: Bouncing Forward from Tough Times in Relationships
How do you bounce forward in relationships? How do you overcome tough times? How do you come through those tough times even stronger? Callie and Jeff Dauler, hosts of the Upside podcast, take over my podcast this week to answer these questions. They have some simple and tangible things every person can use ever single day in their relationships. But first, who are Jeff and Callie? Here’s a little story… Shortly after they started dating, Jeff suggested they write down one thing they were grateful for every day. It only took a few seconds each morning, but they noticed something after just a couple of weeks, they both had an INCREDIBLE shift in our mindsets. Their brains started thinking about the upside and positive of every situation instead of defaulting to the negative. From that, a remarkable ripple effect of amazing changes in their lives began. They were happier, kinder, and more patient, all because they took a few seconds each day to appreciate something… even something small. They want to share the power of gratitude with as many people as possible, and that’s the mission behind all things Callie and Jeff. And this is their foundation for bouncing forward. Find more from Callie and Jeff: Instagram: @jeffdauler | @calliedauler Podcast: The Upside P.S. My favorite thing the two share is this: As long as you are still moving forward, you’re still in the race.

19: Ashleigh Di Lello: Why Your Physical and Emotional Pain isn't Permanent and How to Heal
What pain are you experiencing right now? Is it physical, mental, emotional? Whatever it is, you CAN transform it into something greater and in this episode of Bouncing Forward, my guest and amazing friend, Ashleigh Di Lello, is here to teach you how! Ashleigh shares how we can overcome our physical and emotional pain by tapping into our subconscious minds. Everything she teaches is backed by neuroscience and has helped her overcome her own chronic pain. My favorite thing she shared in this episode was, “What is now, doesn’t always have to be.” I think this is something we often forget or fail to believe. And I know after listen you’ll realize that whatever you are experiencing right now that is bringing you suffering or pain, doesn’t always have to be. Ashleigh is a Professional Dancer on Broadway and TV shows like So You Think You Can Dance and Dancing With The Stars. At age 13, she was suddenly faced with a life-threatening illness that led to years of chronic pain, a broken metabolism, rapid weight gain, and a destructive relationship with her body and food. Through her study of neuroscience and a 20-year journey, she was able to conquer the emotional, physical, and mental battle in her life to become a successful Professional Dancer.  Then in 2016, a failed hip surgery launched her body into widespread chronic pain and dysfunction. And for the last 4 years, she’s seen her body suffer the depths of unimaginable pain only to bounce forward from what was thought to be “impossible.”

She is a 15-time cancer survivor, living 21 years with cancer, and bouncing forward from 1 leg operation, 1 leg amputee, 5 lunge operations, 3 neck operations, 4 back operations, and 128 radiations. Being a single leg amputee didn't stop her and she become the most badass snowboarder I know, winning 3x Paralympic Gold Medalist and a 7x World Champion snowboarder. We're always told to set goals for ourselves, right? But what if we are boxing ourselves with these goals? 11: Jonathon Koch: From Hand Transplant to "Earning" Resilience
In this episode, I’m joined by the amazing Jonathon Koch. His story has inspired me more than anything else and that’s why I’m so grateful to have him here on Bouncing Forward. Jonathon is world-renown producer and director, having worked on films like American Gangster, The peacemaker, and Fearless, and the miniseries The Kennedys. While in Washington In Koch became desperately ill and in order to save his life, doctors had to place him in a coma. A few weeks later when Koch woke up with his mind completely intact, he learned that he had survived septic shock, but his body had been severely compromised – he lost his right leg and left hand in the process. Koch spent the next 18 months rebuilding himself with several painful surgeries, multiple prosthetic fittings, and endless rehabilitation appointments. His dedication to bouncing forward far exceeded his doctors’ expectations. They recognized his mental and physical strength to successfully receive the first human hand transplant EVER. One year later, Koch made medical history by making it through successfully. The doctors said takes several years to learn how to use a new hand, but only four months later, Jonathan was already back on the tennis court. Jonathon discusses why we should be purpose oriented instead setting goals, the reason why people survive, how to change our perspective, and daily practices that helped him succeed. My favorite quote from Jonathon in this episode is, “Don’t wait for something catastrophic to happen before you live in a way that you are ready for anything.” Are you living your life this way? What we discuss: [00:04:53] What does success look like today compared to early on in John’s life [00:05:36] Setting goals = setting limits [00:07:50] Being able vs being capable [00:09:16] Jonathon's story [00:12:42] Being in induced comma [00:17:56] John’s initial reaction after waking up from comma [00:20:38] The reason why people survive [00:21:25] Did John ever victimised himself? [00:42:18] Was there one particular thing that flipped John’s perspective to help him go forward [00:44:07] Daily practices to keep John going and succeed [00:54:04] One things that helped John succeed [00:54:52] One thing about life that john to be true [00:58:23] Resilience is earned

10: Liz Gilbert: Why We Need to Have Mercy for Ourselves [3-MIN. BONUS EPISODE]
In this bonus episode of Bouncing Forward, I share a clip from my latest episode with Liz Gilbert on getting through life's most difficult moments. This clip was my personal biggest takeaway from the interview: Giving ourselves MERCY. Have you ever done that before? Liz says during her hardest days she was literally fighting for her existence. She was in so much pain and shame because she had no mercy for herself. So she started saying this to herself, “You are experiencing the dilemma of your humanity. You don't know what to do and why should you? None of us do. I see you. I see the pain that you’re in. I see how hard you’re struggling. And I want you to know I love you. You are no less deserving of love than any other person in the world. I’ve got you.” How amazing is that?! Think about how our lives would change if that were how we started speaking to ourselves! In this episode of Bouncing Forward, I’m joined by the amazing Liz Gilbert. Not only is she an amazing human, but she is also an amazing friend. The book was an international bestseller, translated into over thirty languages, with over 12 million copies sold worldwide. In 2010, EAT PRAY LOVE was made into a film starring Julia Roberts. The book became so popular that Time Magazine named Elizabeth as one of the 100 most influential people in the world and outside of that, she has been one of the most influential people in my life as well. Together we dive into discussing her divorce 20 years ago as one of the most difficult moments of her life and how she got through it. In this episode of Bouncing Forward, I share the amazing revelation I had on getting inspired and motivated. 1: My Story of Bouncing Forward
The number one question I get asked is how I rose above my greatest setback of losing both my legs at the age of 19 to turning it into my greatest successes. Looking back on my life, the challenges I've faced and the accomplishments I've had, I realized none of it would have happened had I have not lost my legs. And had I not faced some of the biggest challenges of my life, I wouldn’t have gone on to have some of the greatest experiences of my life. So in this episode of Bouncing Forward, I share my entire story of how I not only bounced back from my adversity, but how I used it to my advantage to actually bounced forward. I know the mindset shifts and perspective changes I share in this episode will help you do the same.
