Bouncing Forward with Amy Purdy

Bouncing Forward with Amy Purdy

By Amy Purdy

After losing both my legs at the age of 19 I bounced forward to become a 3-time Paralympic medalist, one of Oprah’s top 100 thought leaders, a New York Times best-selling author, a Dancing with the Stars runner up, and a world-renown motivational speaker.

I’m here to challenge you with one thing: How can you use your current situation to get ahead? How can you not just survive the challenges you are facing but actually thrive because of them.

After all, it's not about bouncing back to who we once were, it's about bouncing forward to all that we can be.

21: Hassan Khan: 5 Characteristics of a Resilient Person

Resiliency is a nice word, but what does it actually mean? What characteristics does a resilient person hold? What do we need to do to become more resilient?

In this episode of Bouncing Forward, Hassan Khan takes over as host for me (as I’m in recovery from a series of surgeries) and answers these questions with clarity and depth.

When looking for a substitute host, I instantly knew Hassan would be perfect. He is a human performance coach and founder of Limitless Humans. He works with elite performers across a number of industries, and provides evidence based solutions to help them build their capabilities, perform at the highest level, and unlock their potential. Hassan holds an Economics degree, a Law degree, a Research Masters degree in Innovation, and a Master of Business Administration degree, and he is an alumni and graduate of Harvard Business School and the University of Cambridge. Pretty amazing, right?!

I know you’ll be blown away by the insight and actionable steps Hassan shares in this episode!

19: Ashleigh Di Lello: Why Your Physical and Emotional Pain isn't Permanent and How to Heal

19: Ashleigh Di Lello: Why Your Physical and Emotional Pain isn't Permanent and How to Heal

What pain are you experiencing right now? Is it physical, mental, emotional? Whatever it is, you CAN transform it into something greater and in this episode of Bouncing Forward, my guest and amazing friend, Ashleigh Di Lello, is here to teach you how!

Ashleigh shares how we can overcome our physical and emotional pain by tapping into our subconscious minds. Everything she teaches is backed by neuroscience and has helped her overcome her own chronic pain.

My favorite thing she shared in this episode was, “What is now, doesn’t always have to be.” I think this is something we often forget or fail to believe. And I know after listen you’ll realize that whatever you are experiencing right now that is bringing you suffering or pain, doesn’t always have to be.

Ashleigh is a Professional Dancer on Broadway and TV shows like So You Think You Can Dance and Dancing With The Stars. At age 13, she was suddenly faced with a life-threatening illness that led to years of chronic pain, a broken metabolism, rapid weight gain, and a destructive relationship with her body and food. Through her study of neuroscience and a 20-year journey, she was able to conquer the emotional, physical, and mental battle in her life to become a successful Professional Dancer.  Then in 2016, a failed hip surgery launched her body into widespread chronic pain and dysfunction. And for the last 4 years, she’s seen her body suffer the depths of unimaginable pain only to bounce forward from what was thought to be “impossible.”

15: 5 Ways to Give Yourself Some Grace When You're Feeling Unmotivated

I haven’t been motivated to do much of anything. I've been so hard on myself for not being productive. And then, I realized the most productive thing I can do for myself sometimes is this: Give myself some damn grace!

Because here’s the thing, we simply don’t give it to ourselves enough. We give it to others, yet we never even think about giving it to ourselves. Why is that?! But the truth is, it’s by far the best gift we could ever give ourselves.

So in this episode of Bouncing Forward, I share the exact five ways I gave myself grace. Plus, I talk about what grace is and how to actually give it to yourself.

14: Why Life is Too Short to Not Do What You Love [3-MIN. BONUS EPISODE]

Can I steal three minutes of your time?! Because this is a bonus episode of Bouncing Forward where I share my favorite clip and golden nugget from this week's episode: Bibian Mentel: 15-Time Cancer Survivor on Living Life to the Fullest and Sustaining a Positive Mindset. This clip highlights how Bibian continues to bounce forward through her darkest days.

To me, there is no one who captures Bouncing Forward more than Bibian. She is a 15-time cancer survivor, living 21 years with cancer, and bouncing forward from 1 leg operation, 1 leg amputee, 5 lunge operations, 3 neck operations, 4 back operations, and 128 radiations. Being a single leg amputee didn't stop her and she become the most badass snowboarder I know, winning 3x Paralympic Gold Medalist and a 7x World Champion snowboarder. And most important of all, she's the biggest inspiration of my life.

12: Why Goals Can Set Limits and What To Do Instead [3-MIN. BONUS EPISODE]

12: Why Goals Can Set Limits and What To Do Instead [3-MIN. BONUS EPISODE]

We're always told to set goals for ourselves, right? But what if we are boxing ourselves with these goals? What if these goals are placing limits on ourselves and preventing us from exploring our full potential? In this bonus episode, guest Jonathon Koch shares why being purpose-oriented instead of goal-oriented could get us further on our journey of bouncing forward.

Mar 11, 202102:47
11: Jonathon Koch: From Hand Transplant to "Earning" Resilience

11: Jonathon Koch: From Hand Transplant to "Earning" Resilience

In this episode, I’m joined by the amazing Jonathon Koch. His story has inspired me more than anything else and that’s why I’m so grateful to have him here on Bouncing Forward.

Jonathon is world-renown producer and director, having worked on films like American Gangster, The peacemaker, and Fearless, and the miniseries The Kennedys. While in Washington In Koch became desperately ill and in order to save his life, doctors had to place him in a coma. A few weeks later when Koch woke up with his mind completely intact, he learned that he had survived septic shock, but his body had been severely compromised – he lost his right leg and left hand in the process.

Koch spent the next 18 months rebuilding himself with several painful surgeries, multiple prosthetic fittings, and endless rehabilitation appointments. His dedication to bouncing forward far exceeded his doctors’ expectations. They recognized his mental and physical strength to successfully receive the first human hand transplant EVER. One year later, Koch made medical history by making it through successfully. The doctors said takes several years to learn how to use a new hand, but only four months later, Jonathan was already back on the tennis court.

Jonathon discusses why we should be purpose oriented instead setting goals, the reason why people survive, how to change our perspective, and daily practices that helped him succeed.

My favorite quote from Jonathon in this episode is, “Don’t wait for something catastrophic to happen before you live in a way that you are ready for anything.” Are you living your life this way?

What we discuss:

[00:04:53] What does success look like today compared to early on in John’s life

[00:05:36] Setting goals = setting limits

[00:07:50] Being able vs being capable

[00:09:16] Jonathon's story

[00:12:42] Being in induced comma
