Body Image, Yoga, and Femininity: Interview with Erica Mather

Body Image, Yoga, and Femininity: Interview with Erica Mather

Erica Mather was born in Madison, Wisconsin in 1975, and grew up swimming, playing the piano, and reading books before, during, and after school. When her father died at the young age of 56 (she, 23), Erica realized that life is short and it’s best to quickly get on with the business of living it in alignment with what matters to us most. She quit her day job and doubled down on playing the piano professionally, gigging, writing, teaching, and self-producing two jazz-inspired albums, Borderlands (1999), and The Millennium Song Cycle (2001). In 2002 Erica was voted “Madison’s Favorite Jazz Artist” in the 2002 Isthmus Reader’s Poll. She served on the Mayor’s Arts Advisory Board. You can hear her music on SoundCloud. At the age of 26, Erica began experiencing adult onset migraines, going overnight from “healthy” to “gravely ill.” On a quest for relief she discovered Forrest Yoga.

In 2004 moved to New York City to commence Ph.D. studies in Ethnomusicology at Columbia University. After earning her Masters Degree in 2006 she took a medical leave of absence, trying to get a handle on worsening migraines. In this quest, during the summer of 2006 Erica enrolled in and completed the month-long, immersive Forrest Yoga 200-hour Teacher Training with Ana Forrest, in Boston, Massachusetts. Returning to New York City, Erica began what has been her profession of the last 15 years. Fortifying her career change with retail work, Erica began growing a reputation throughout New York City as a gifted teacher, capable of high-level, physically, intellectually, and emotionally engaging education, presented in a mixed level classroom. It is in this environment of practicing and teaching yoga that Erica gestated the information culminating in her first book, Your Body, Your Best Friend: End the Confidence Crushing Pursuit of Unrealistic Beauty Standards and Embrace Your True Power (New Harbinger, April 2020). Using her own illness and body image challenges, the teachings of embodiment intrinsic to Forrest Yoga, and her experience working in private practice with people’s wounded and ill bodies, Erica has developed a teaching style and message that encourages us to begin to build a relationship with the body, in service of our health, and also in the quest to discover our life’s work, or dharma. In 2009, Erica was hand-selected by Ana Forrest to become a lineage-holder (called “a Guardian”) in the Forrest Yoga system. In 2014 she founded The Adore Your Body Transformational Program, a 7-step system for getting a handle on body image challenges, and also founded The Yoga Clinic of NYC, a business that educates clients, medical practitioners, and yoga teachers about empowered self-care practices using yoga as the core tool.

How To Strengthen Your Family's Relationship With Food: Interview with Jennifer Carr, Certified Behavioural Eating Coach

How To Strengthen Your Family's Relationship With Food: Interview with Jennifer Carr, Certified Behavioural Eating Coach

Jennifer Carr is a London born, Barcelona based Behavioural Eating Coach and Plant Based Retreat Cook. Training at The Institute of the Psychology of Eating in Boulder, Colorado in 2017, today Jennifer coaches from her home in Barcelona in person and online, helping people to address an array of body image and eating challenges. Through a blend of mindfulness based psychology, mirror work, energy medicine and firsthand experience, Jennifer’s ultimate goal is to support people in understanding their belief systems and patterns around eating and self image, to enable the coaching journey to be one of awareness, discovery and ultimately, re-learning how to nourish the mind-body for pleasure and health.

From Mind + Plate Online: "My journey with dieting began at 18, triggered by a turbulent set of personal circumstances and a deep belief that I was not enough. Dabbling with zero fat foods and endless bowls of steamed vegetables quickly led to weight loss and attention, which translated a distorted truth in my mind: “I’m worthy”.

The path back had its fair share of potholes. And as anyone who’s overcome an eating disorder will know, it’s often not linear.  I now regard my own ‘road back’ as one of the most valuable experiences, because it forced me to let go of who I thought I was and become who I am. In so doing, I found my ‘true north’ as a certified transformational eating coach and more recently, reiki practitioner.

I believe our world is in a deep crisis of perfectionism that’s fuelled by “not-enoughness”. Our culture teaches us that if we can just look a certain way, or diet a certain way, that happiness is within our grasp. It’s time to unlearn this idea. It’s time to embrace food with a peaceful, balanced attitude that frees us up to nourishment and pleasurable eating without extremes. Working with me, you will rewrite your food script – and discover a liberating new approach to your body and your life."

Ayurveda and Menopause: Interview with Val Joan of Ayurveda With Val

Ayurveda and Menopause: Interview with Val Joan of Ayurveda With Val

I want to share the basics of Ayurveda, starting with food, the foundation of a healthy life. What diet is right for you? It’s not about counting calories, it’s about choosing the right food, the right herbs and spices, the right time, combinations and techniques. Ayurveda nutrition is fun, delicious, and nourishing. And once you know what is good for you, Ayurveda nutrition is simple. It all starts with knowing yourself. From that awareness, and with some education, you will naturally change your behaviors. We start with food. Food is the foundation. But Ayurveda is way more than that: it is a lifestyle, a way of existing in the world, a sense of connection with nature, a higher consciousness. It is fun, sensual, and spiritual. It’s a whole system, a big toolbox. It’s a framework to design a new lifestyle! I believe that we are all on this planet for a purpose. Sharing what I have learned with as many women as possible is what I feel my dharma is -- my life purpose. Ayurveda has changed my life: my digestion, my energy, my mood, my sleep, the way I make big & small choices, my sex life, and my spirituality. It has given me a framework: a set of tools that I use to create alignment and balance in my life. Those tools are here for you too.

A Functional Medicine Approach to Type 2 Diabetes: Interview with Melody Hartzler, Pharm.D.

A Functional Medicine Approach to Type 2 Diabetes: Interview with Melody Hartzler, Pharm.D.

I’m a clinical pharmacist at Western Medicine Family Physicians in Fairborn, Ohio. And I also teach part-time at Cedarville University School of Pharmacy. I love sharing experiences with the next generation of practitioners especially when I can teach diabetes & functional medicine content! I am currently a Board Certified Ambulatory Care Pharmacy Specialist (BCACP), and Board Certified in Advanced Diabetes Management (BC-ADM).

I married my wonderful husband Dustin in 2007, and graduated from Ohio Northern University Raabe College of Pharmacy in 2009. Then I completed a pharmacy practice residency with emphasis in ambulatory care (primary care) at the Chalmers P. Wylie VA Ambulatory Care Center in Columbus, Ohio. Following residency training, I took a full time faculty position at Cedarville University School of Pharmacy and started a clinical practice in family medicine at the Victor J. Cassano Health Center where I practiced for 6 years.

From a practice standpoint, I have been focused on diabetes management for the majority of my career. I love helping people learn how to eat healthy and figure out what they need when diet and exercise don’t do the trick. I also have been managing other chronic disease states such as hypertension, asthma, and COPD. Most recently I have developed a passion for functional medicine. Functional medicine is treating the underlying causes of disease vs. just treating the symptoms.

Empowering Women With and Beyond Hashimoto's: Jenn Krusinski, CTNC

Jenn Krusinski, CTNC

Holistic Health + Hashi’s + Life Coach

Empowering women to seek and find their whole health potential, with and BEYOND Hashimoto’s; to inspire and create the lives they want to love — on their terms; and to always be expanding by standing in their power and speaking their truths.

The majority of women I work with today are beyond wanting just the protocols and being told what to do. They are ready for more, they can feel what’s possible, they are ready to allow their diagnosis to push them into who they are meant to BE.

I'm on a mission to empower women  to demand their labs, get the diagnosis, and then…hear the message their body is longing for them to hear, decide they are NOT their diagnosis, allow the diagnosis to crack them open so they can become who they really are. I show women that that health is not just about what they are doing, but more importantly, who they are BEING.

I can be found at jennkrusinskiwellness.com;

For those newly diagnosed or who are wondering if they have a thyroid issue:  my website has a symptom checklist, labs checklist to bring to your doctor, and the top nutrients to ignite your thyroid and metabolism.

You can all also receive my top Hashi’s Hacks via my bio on Instagram

For newly diagnosed who resonate with me, AND more directly for the women who have been dealing with this for a while but feel like there is MORE to healing than beyond protocols — who are at a pivotal point and want to create what’s NEXT — head to my website or message me on Facebook and Instagram to set up a Discovery/Strategy call.

Reiki and Meditation: Interview with Donna Magtibay, MSN, RN, RMT

Reiki and Meditation: Interview with Donna Magtibay, MSN, RN, RMT

I have personally and professionally witnessed the importance of a holistic approach in maintaining health and treating illness. This approach includes equal attention to the mind and the spirit as well as the body. As a nurse, I have had extensive training in the traditions of  'Western' medicine; including researching stress and resilience. Recognizing a personal need for a greater understanding of the role the mind and spirit play in healing, I began my study of 'Eastern' practices. In combining traditional 'Western' medicine with the 'Eastern' philosophies, I attempt to honor this balance.

Synegration is a word coined by my son that reflects this philosophy of using  modalities from the 'East' and the 'West' to maximize health and healing. Synegration is the blending of two words; synergy and integration. Synergy is defined as the interaction of elements that when combined produce a total effect that is greater than the sum of the individual elements while integrations is defined as an act of combining into an integral whole. These concepts when combined together is something new and powerful.

I offer Reiki to members of the Dan Abraham Healthy Living Center. I also partner with Northgate Chiropractic Clinic and Lilac Wellness Center to offer coaching and energy therapies as a alternative healing and/or wellness option. I do this through Reiki, Chakra clearing and balancing, and meditation coaching. I also offer coaching on techniques to build mindfulness and resilience to reduce stress, anxiety, and burnout.

These therapies can be used alone or combined with other therapies to bring more energy into the body. The body knows where to best utilize this renewed energy and channels it for that purpose; healing when ill, clearing the mind to see more clearly, and/or revitalizing the spirit. Please browse the tabs to learn more information about these therapies and to schedule an appointment.
