Trademarks, Copyrights, Intellectual Property Law for Small Business Owners with Brian Hanning

Trademarks, Copyrights, Intellectual Property Law for Small Business Owners with Brian Hanning

Hello!

Welcome to the Analytive Podcast. Today for our guest I have Brian Hanning. Brian is a lawyer specializing in business-related law.

I asked Brian to come on the podcast for two reasons: First, as a business owner, I had questions about many of the legal aspects of running a business. Brian was gracious with his time, and I'm grateful for his ability to explain complex legal topics simply. If you're starting or running a small business, this is a great foundation.

The second reason I wanted to have him on is: I get a lot of questions from other entrepreneurs about corporate formation, trademarks, and other business-related issues. I'm by no means an expert, so this interview with Brian is something I hope to pass along to them.

Here's the deal: If you're curious about forming an LLC, whether you should get a trademark, and other types of legal questions, you should listen to this podcast. If nothing else, it will give you a solid foundation that could potentially save you hours of time talking to a lawyer (which also means hundreds of dollars at their billable rate).

We're doing this episode in a two-part series.

Part 1 Focuses on corporate formation, types of legal entities, and other foundational information. We also briefly discuss trusts and we take a rabbit trail into how people around the world are using shady tactics to hide business activity.

In Part 2 we dive into IP protection including trademarks, copyrights, and other intellectual property issues. We talk about when you should and should not think about filing the various types of intellectual production as well as what you might expect to reasonably pay.

If you do have business legal needs, be sure to reach out to Brian. He can be found at ThatDamnLawyer.com. Props for a great domain name, Brian.

About Analytive

Analytive is the type of marketing company you dream of working with.

You’ve likely worked with marketing agencies in the past. And if your experience is anything like mine, you worked with marketing teams that gave you a cookie-cutter approach to marketing. They counted minutes, gave detailed reports and presentations, and otherwise did the “ad agency” thing. But at the end of the day, were you getting fresh sales leads?

Did you have people interacting with your brand, handing over their email addresses, or requesting quotes?

That’s what good marketing should do for business.

Neither of us works for Coca-Cola. They may have billions of dollars to pour into ads every year, but you don’t.

And you need to get leads from your efforts. Our systems and processes have worked successfully for dozens of clients in the B2B space. And what we do isn’t some sort of voodoo or magic. It’s simply building on a few core principles of digital marketing to help you find, attract, and connect with customers.

We want to help move money from your customer’s pocket to yours. And we want your customers to be happy about it.

Learn more about our SEO, advertising, and digital marketing services at Analytive.com.

Angel Investing Post COVID and Raising Money for Entrepreneurs - Denny Otsuga

Hello! Welcome to the Analytive Podcast. Today on the podcast we have Deniciro “Denny" Otsuga.

Denny is a Japanese transplant to Colorado. He was initially trained as a Ph. D. molecular geneticist, and decided to use his scientific knowledge to help translate scientific discoveries to the marketplace to create a tangible benefit to society.

After earning his doctoral degree, Denny worked in the technology transfer field. Technology transfer (which we talk a bit about in this podcast) is the process of taking inventions from the lab or university to deploying them into the marketplace through products or services.

Denny used his science background to assess innovation from university research, patent them, and then find industry partners interested in developing it into a product.

Denny then went to work for a biotech startup (putting him on the other side of the negotiation table) to license patents from university researchers.

He was then recruited to take executive positions in technology transfer at several universities.

Eventually, Denny left the comfortable university position to start a company that ended up being acquired for more than 20x the initial investment in just 18 months.

Denny has since been on the venture capital and angel investment side of the ecosystem helping entrepreneurs and developing a venture ecosystem in Fort Collins, Colorado.

In today’s episode, we talk about angel investing, venture capital, fundraising, technology transfer, and a host of other topics. Huge thank you to Denny for coming on the Analytive Podcast.

If you run, volunteer with, give to, or serve on the board of a nonprofit organization, you’re likely feeling the pressure right now. As someone who has supported and been a part of several important nonprofit organizations, I wanted to reach out to a friend of mine who has tons of experience in helping nonprofits navigate the chaos.

Staying Sane During COVID-19, Mental Health Plans, and Maintaining Strong Relationships - Emily Altman - The Analytive Podcast

Staying Sane During COVID-19, Mental Health Plans, and Maintaining Strong Relationships - Emily Altman - The Analytive Podcast

Wow! What a crazy world we live in. We’re releasing this episode in the middle of the Corona Virus lockdown. With all the craziness in the world, I reached out to my friend Emily Altman and invited her to this podcast.

Emily is a therapist with a focus on marriage, couples, and family counseling. I wanted to bring her on to get her perspective on how each of us: as entrepreneurs, marketers, and business people can stay sane during this time

In this episode, she gives us some practical tools and exercises that you can do literally today to help deal with some of the stress you may be feeling.

Plus, we discuss how to keep your relationships healthy whether you’re stuck apart or (sometimes even more challenging) stuck together during this time.

She takes us through outlining your own mental health plan so you can be engaged through this chaos.

I’m humbly presenting this to you guys in the hope it helps some of you. We’re living in a history book right now, and things change by the day. I pray that this interview helps in some small way to equip you to be the best businessperson, parter, parent, employee, or whomever you need to be right now.

If you love this podcast, please give us five stars on your favorite podcast platform and share it with those who you may think need it.

With that, I present my interview with Emily Altman. This is Tyler, and you are listening to the Analytive Podcast.

Using Entrepreneurship and Collaboration to Solve Community Problems - Mike Walker

Using Entrepreneurship and Collaboration to Solve Community Problems - Mike Walker

Hello! Welcome back to the Analytive Podcast.

Back in 2013, the Northern Colorado area was hit with massive flooding. Experts called it a “500-year flood”. In fact, Estes Park which is only about 45 minutes from where I lived, was virtually impossible to get into or out of.

In fact, getting people out of Estes was the largest airlift since hurricane Katrina.

And in the middle of all of this was one organization: Serve 68.

Serve 68 is born out of a collection of local churches in Northern Colorado where we’re based. They take unique approaches to solve problems using creative solutions.

One of my favorite stories was told after I’d stopped the recording. There’s a widow here in town who is battling cancer. For that reason, she is unable to make a real income and traditional support structures didn’t provide the level of help she needed.

Serve 68 went out and partnered with a bunch of local businesses and came up with a solution. Instead of just giving her money to live on, they helped her finish her basement (including installing a bathroom and kitchenette) that she can rent out.

That rental is currently providing enough for her to live off of.

I’ve been involved with Serve68 officially and unofficially for many years and love the work they do. If you’re looking to be inspired by creative solutions to community problems, you’ll love this interview.

So without further ado, here’s my interview with the founder and executive director of Serve 68 - Mike Walker.

Cold Calling, Relationship Building, and Being Genuine in Sales with Chris Mullenberg - The Analytive Podcast

Today on the show, I have a friend of mine, Chris Mullenberg.

Chris and his wife, Ashley, are both real estate agents here in Northern Colorado.

Their company: The Mullenberg Team was founded in 2013, and we are now in the top 3% in sales volume in the Northern Colorado market.

When it comes to sales, Chris is one of the hardest workers I know. He grew his business largely through cold calling (which we discuss) as well as through traditional relationship building.

In this podcast, we discuss sales (especially cold calling) and how to do it genuinely. We also break down how Chris has replaced lead development with relationship development during the sales process.

If you work in sales or you need to get better at sales, this is an amazing conversation.

So without further ado, here’s Chris Mullenberg.

They counted minutes, gave detailed reports and presentations, and otherwise did the “ad agency” thing. But at the end of the day, were you getting fresh sales leads?

That’s what good marketing should do for business. And that’s how we want to help you.

Forecasting, Understanding Human Nature, and Living Well - Eric Gemelli

Forecasting, Understanding Human Nature, and Living Well - Eric Gemelli

Today on the podcast we have Eric Gemelli. For those of you unfamiliar with him, let me give you a brief bio.

Mr. Gemelli started working in finance in 1987 and has served in many positions in the insurance and mortgage banking industries. He has traded commodities for a living and raised venture capital.

These experiences gave him the ability to write a syndicated finance column with millions of readers, including his column predicting the market crash that correlated to the September 11 crash.

While living in Chicago, home to the S&P pits at the Mercantile Exchange, Gemelli had an office in a bank, across the hall from one of the country’s top S&P traders. His mentor was rich, old and bored and enjoyed having an eager student to pass on a lifetime of experience and knowledge. Gemelli used the patterns taught him by his mentor to predict the market crash that corresponded to September 11th.

Mr Gemelli just released a new book, Velocity Money Machine, which is available on Amazon. In it, he breaks down the strategies he uses to make a living as a trader.

In this podcast, we discuss trading, investing, forecasting, whether you can really predict the future using math, and take a Segway into wisdom and living well.

You can find more about Eric at Learn2Invest.co.
