Cleopatra Saved My Life – with Michael Seaver, Leadership Coach

In this episode, I'm talking with Michael Seaver, an executive coach, leadership consultant, author and public speaker who focuses on unlocking human potential, helping you uncover your most authentic self and define your life's purpose.

Raised on a farm in a small town in Michigan, Michael started working in the family business at the age of 12. When he got married and moved away to Arizona it certainly helped him to broaden his horizons and develop plenty of business and people skills, but also set him up with a number of challenges and created a lot of stress.

Eventually, when his marriage fell apart, Michael went through a state of despair and depression to the point that he was giving serious consideration as to why he was on this planet.

However, a bizarre event involving his cat, Cleopatra, helped him to turn his whole life around, setting him on his journey to understand potential and purpose.

In our conversation, we cover such topics as:

  • how we can take our darkest moments and turn them into opportunities for growth;

  • how being still and trusting in yourself will lead you to the answers you seek; and

  • why stepping into nature can instantly reduce stress and anxiety.

Ultimately, the secret to happiness and a life of joy is about becoming the person that you needed when you were younger.

Cooking Spaghetti in Apple Juice – with Louis Barnett of Ikigai Studio

Cooking Spaghetti in Apple Juice – with Louis Barnett of Ikigai Studio

In this episode, I'm talking with Louis Barnett from Ikigai Studio, a marketing consultancy that likes to do things differently.

In fact, Louis has always done things differently. At a very young age he developed an interest in making truffles and chocolates and set up his own business selling them to local shops. Word of mouth got him in front of the big boys and he found himself supplying the likes of Waitrose and Sainsbury's when he was still only 13 years old!!

Along the way he realised the power of innovation when a mentor asked him the key question. Have you ever cooked spaghetti in apple juice? From that conversation he realised that the old ways are not the only ways and that anything you can think of is worth trying.

The unique branding and marketing he was employing in his own business then became noticed by others and now he focuses purely on creating innovative and distinctive marketing campaigns for other organisations.

In our conversation we cover such topics as:

  • why patience is the most useful attribute of an entrepreneur;

  • the importance of getting to know people at a deeper level and fast; and

  • why perfecting your marketing campaign can actually be detrimental to you.

Ultimately, the main thing is to remember that you're always dealing with people and so keep it human at all times.

If you want to know more about Louis, do check out the following links:

Every Day is a Success - with Charles Read, ex-Marine and payroll specialist.

Every Day is a Success - with Charles Read, ex-Marine and payroll specialist.

In this episode, I'm talking with Charles Read of GetPayroll, who is a specialist in providing payroll services – although he started life as a US Marine, including serving in Vietnam.

This interview has actually been quite hard to summarise.

First of all, it's not about payroll. Yes, it gets mentioned, obviously, but the payroll business is just the context for the learnings to come.

Within that specific space, the conversation does cover such topics as marketing, differentiating and niching – and how it's set up so that every day there is an accomplishment. A success.

Then there's the element that explores the transferable skills that come from a military background and can be applied in business.

Planning, discipline, teamwork, motivational skills and, of course, the desire to accomplish the mission at all costs.

In fact, you effectively learn the key steps to enable you to make your business a well-oiled machine.

However, hidden within this business context, there actually runs a very moving love story. Charles opens up about some very personal matters and we get to see what a business can really be about

More than just systems and processes and results, but also a family, a support system and even a lifeline in times of need.

Any summary I come up with feels like an injustice to the impact of this interview and the quality and quantity of the learnings you will receive.

All I can do is ask you to take the time and make sure you listen to it all.

The Power of the Ageless Entrepreneur - with Rick Terrien, Serial Entrepreneur.

The Power of the Ageless Entrepreneur - with Rick Terrien, Serial Entrepreneur.

In this episode, I'm talking with Rick Terrien, a lifelong entrepreneur whose current focus is the creation of a non-profit organisation - The Center for Ageless Entrepreneurs.

Rick has entrepreneurship in his blood although, as he says, that wasn't a word he used when he first started, which was at the age of 15. His first proper business was started out of his dorm room at college, which he then sold when he was 25. He even designed his course at university around his desire to boost his entrepreneurship journey

When he sold his next business, he was 45 and realised that things had changed. He found that he was being dismissed merely because of his age. It seemed incredible to him that businesses and society were ignoring these people who all held two massive assets.

Experience and networks

Things have changed in recent years but still not enough. Did you know that the majority of startups in the last couple of years have been launched by people who are over 45 – and yet most of the support is targeted at those who are around 20?

Rick put his learnings down into a book entitled “Ageless Startup: Start a Business at Any Age” and launched the aforementioned centre to give support and opportunities to those who are in their 'Apex Years'.

In our conversation, we cover such topics as:

1)  the importance of being a small business owner in today's society;

2)  where to look for a business idea; and

3)  why there's nothing wrong with staying small

He also shares the concept of phased retirement, where companies collaborate with those approaching the later years to start up a new business and benefit from the wisdom they gain in the process.

Trust the Ripples and Follow the Nudges – with El Edwards, Founder of “Youier”

In this episode, I'm talking with El Edwards - who is building a community dedicated to enabling you to smile more and be more 'you' – or 'Youier'.

Brought up in a strong evangelical Christian environment, she was taught from an early age to fear God. El strived to be perfect in every way - the perfect Christian, the perfect wife, the perfect mother. Eventually, she realised that trying to be 'normal' was making her crazy and that something had to change.

El started to build new relationships with her faith and herself and recognised that love is at the heart of everything, including all the flaws and imperfections. Now she helps others to do the same.

This is a joyous discussion where we explore El's journey and beliefs – hopping from one tangent to another, but always getting back to the same message.

We don't need to know exactly where we're going, but if we trust the ripples and follow the nudges – all the time with love in our hearts – then we'll get to where we need to be.

Which actually sums up the conversation itself quite nicely.

Amongst the many things we discuss are topics such as:

  • using stories to deliver your message so that people don't get hung up on specific details;
  • the differences between faith, religion and organised religions; and
  • the many similarities there are between supposedly opposing belief systems.

And the biggest topic of all is, of course, the importance of being you.

“It Depends” – with Devin Miller, Serial Entrepreneur and founder of Miller IP Law

In this episode, I'm talking with Devin Miller who is a serial entrepreneur, with businesses ranging from a law firm specialising in Intellectual Property to a hydration monitoring smartwatch that helps people with diabetes.

Growing up in an entrepreneurial environment, Devin always had an interest in business. He focussed on getting educated in the first instance, to help him move into that space and then entered a local business competition, which became the catalyst for his first venture.

Overall, he is passionate about small businesses and startups and is frequently approached by other ventures for advice or mentoring – including getting involved on a more hands-on basis.

In our conversation, we cover such topics as:

- how to get stuff done when there's so much to do;

- where to look for the next business opportunity; and

- the fundamental characteristic that separates the successful entrepreneur from the rest.

As a general overview, it becomes clear in our conversation that there is no ONE WAY to run a business. You have to take the learnings that you can and then craft those learnings for your own venture.

In other words, how do you be successful? It depends!

Make Your Move - with Scott Schilling, executive coach, trainer, author and professional speaker

In this episode, I'm talking with Scott Schilling - an executive coach, trainer, author and professional speaker. Scott has spoken at over 2,500 live events, including stadia with audiences of well over 25,000 people in them, and shared the stage with some of the biggest known names in the business, such as Jack Canfield and Les Brown.

Scott is an expert on building trust and making sales and uses his platforms – on stage, on tv and on podcasts such as this – to help fulfil his mission to positively touch the lives of over a billion people on the planet.

This includes sharing his own story of how he used purpose and belief to recover from a life-threatening stroke and be back on stage 23 days later when most doctors thought he should be dead.

Underlying everything is a core belief that everyone has their part to play in the world and he wants you to take control of your life, get out there and make your move.

You Can't Handle the Truth - with Paul Glover, the No B.S. Coach

In this episode, I'm talking with Paul Glover who is known as the No B.S. Coach. Paul works with business owners and executives, mainly in the distribution and manufacturing sector, and tells them exactly how it is.

Paul used to be an aggressive barrister, focussed on doing whatever he needed to in order to win his case. After falling in with the wrong crowd and being tempted into bending the rules a little too far, he got found out and spent the next 5 and half years in prison.

(I was going to call this episode “From The Bar to Behind Bars” but there's much more to the conversation than just this event)

Having forced himself to take a good hard look at himself, he became a reformed character and realised that his experiences could help others. After all, a lot of leadership is all about managing some very tricky relationships and taking responsibility for your own actions.

At the heart of it all, Paul cares about people – and cares about them enough to tell them the truth.

Amongst many other things we discuss subjects such as:

  • coping with situations outside of your control, regardless of the impact upon you;
  • how everyone has a voice that is worth listening to; and
  • the importance of facing up to reality.

We even have a conversation about what 'truth' actually is.

Live a Life Without Regret - with Vanessa Zamy, business expert, keynote speaker, and bestselling author.

In this episode, I'm talking with Vanessa Zamy, a business expert, keynote speaker, and bestselling author of FINISH: The Solopreneur’s Guide To Getting Stuff Done.

Vanessa does not come from an entrepreneurial family but it was her family that inspired her to follow the path that she is now on - though not in the way that you might imagine.

The next key step for her was when she was just a teenager and she began to think about her own funeral ! What she wanted it to look like, who she wanted to be there and what those people would say. From there it was all about creating a life that would enable that to happen and to ensure that she lived a life without regret.

In our conversation we cover such subjects as:

- the dangers of trying so hard to fit in that you lose yourself;

- how entrepreneurship is actually personal development on steroids; and

- whether or not you can be truly authentic if you haven't discovered who you are yet.

Her overall message to success in business is, in a nutshell, “Keep it simple, keep it moving”.
