Sitting with Superheroes: Part II

Sitting with Superheroes: Part II

....And now for the second installment of sitting down with Beds For Kids Executive Director, Lauren Evans and the Director of Operations, Zach Smith!

Lauren and Zach discuss the different roles their organization plays in assisting programs all around the Charlotte area and some of the hurdles that stand in their way. We also take a minute to get to know them on a more personal level with one of my favorite things to ask people which is "What would you eat for lunch?!?"

I am eternally grateful that I met the Beds For Kids team in late 2022. We forged an alliance to improve the sleep security of the Charlotte area and together we fight the things that keep people up at night!!

Sitting with Superheroes

Sitting with Superheroes

Hello superpower seekers! Today, we have a very special episode of the Adventures of Mattman!

I got the chance to sit down with some superhero neighbors of mine, Beds For Kids. I spoke to their Executive Director, Lauren Evans, and Zach Smith, Director of Operations. These leaders and their organization fight the things that keep many vulnerable families and children up at night.

We sat down to talk about their mission and the impact it has on not only the recipients, but the volunteers and community at large.

In part one, we get to know the organization - who they are and how they help. It’s a long interview so it is broken up into two parts. Catch the audio version on the podcast while doing a chore or driving. It’s a really great story!

It is an honor to serve as a superhero along side of Beds For Kids. Standing next to a crew like them, I am just an oversized piece of toast with a napkin stuck to it’s back… They’re the real superheroes!

Ask Me Anything

Ask Me Anything

Good morning superpower seekers! Winter is nearly over and spring is looming. You know what that means? It means Tyrano-Snore-Us Rex will be ramping up his attacks as allergy season sets in.  Here in North Carolina, the pollen can paint your car green in a day. While the Irish might think that’s cute for St. Patrick’s day, I assure you it is not. So I am busier than ever preparing to hunt some Tyrano-Snore-Us Rex.  A mighty foe for a mighty warrior!

I have a quick break between battles to talk about two quick things. First is my Matt-amatics Power Level! I started tracking my daily digits since January 1st 2023 and after the first month, I saw some trends. I tend to eat healthy, get exercise and sleep great on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. And then it’s downhill to fight my way back uphill. Friday through Monday my power level drops significantly. I tracked scores as low as 18 but then streaked 50 three days in a row(twice actually).

Adventures of Mattman: An Attitude of Gratitude

Adventures of Mattman: An Attitude of Gratitude

The month is November and for now, many of the sleep villains I fight against are at bay although I’ve seen a new bad guy popping up. Wrestler Leg Syndrome. I’m back to the drawing board at coming up with ways to defeat The Syndrome. He is a bull in a china shop type sleeper. Spinning, flipping, and keeping everybody in bed awake! While I plot and strategize, I wanted to take a moment to slow down like I do every Thanksgiving and try to live from an attitude of gratitude.

One thing better sleep over a long period of time has taught me is when we are exhausted, we are at risk to take things for granted. Lots of different things! I have also learned through my service in the Kiwanis and Exchange Clubs that not everybody gets to sleep in ideal conditions. Far from it. There are many people who have sleeping conditions that guarantee no sleep will occur. And I have learned how much harder people’s lives are compared to my own. For instance, I delivered a mattress set to a local veteran who had lost both of his legs in the service. This was many years ago as he is now an elderly man. And as we set up his mattress set and some basic furniture, I could see how difficult it was for him to do chores. Picking up items on the floor, dusting, doing laundry, and the list goes on. Then I turn around and procrastinate doing my own chores because of some lame excuse like I feel like I deserve to relax more and shrug my chores off.

But now it’s different. I no longer procrastinate. I view my chore list with gratitude. I get to do my laundry. I load it up into a hamper, march it over to the machines, and two-ish hours later it’s all folded and put away. Same with the dishes!

Adventures of Mattman: Sleep Superheros are Real Superheros

Adventures of Mattman: Sleep Superheros are Real Superheros

Wait, let me de-superhero. *struggles with taking off the uniform*

Alright.

Chowdy folks, it’s me. Andy Schlesser. I’m my normal self today.  I would usually tell you what thing about sleep or which bad guy we are fighting this week right about now. However, today I’m taking a minute to speak as a normal human being. As time has gone on, I have come to a conclusion that I personally wanted to share with you. Being a Sleep Superhero is being a real superhero.

Most, if not all, of the superhero stories are based on humans like us becoming supernatural beings and gaining supernatural powers. Wouldn’t it be awesome to command lightning and thunder like Thor or heat your morning cup of coffee with laser beams shooting out of your eyes like Superman? Or the technology of Batman with bat hooks that catch corners on every surface?  Or Tony Stark with a near endless energy supply and mechanicals suits that rarely malfunction? Many people dream of those abilities and tools being their own and how that could change their lives. But the reality is that almost all of those things are science fiction.  To become a replica of those superheroes is impossible.

As everybody knows, I am a Sleep Superhero.  I wear the mattsuit, the cape, the pink glasses, the whole nine yards!  And I don’t want to just be a superhero in name alone. So I look for ways to save things.  That’s what superheroes do!  So we do a blood drive at the store every couple months.  Donating blood saves 3 lives per donation.  I also hop in the Mattmobile and rotate a mattress from time to time for elderly folks in need.  However, there is one thing I do above all the rest that I focus on to make an impact on the lives of our community.  That is called Dreams4All.  Dreams4All believes that nobody deserves to sleep on the floor.

The Caffeine Chameleon (a Coffee Break Update)

The Caffeine Chameleon (a Coffee Break Update)

I've been running from house to house at the speed of snore helping elevate the heads and lives of the good citizens of Lake Norman. These days the Tyrano-snore-us rex, king of the dino-snores, is out there gaining strength. While I wait for the next snore signal, I have a moment to tell you about how I recently defeated the Caffeine Chameleon!

With the guidance of my favorite sleep sources, I learned the true nature of the Caffeine Chameleon. He takes on many forms and sneakily saps your sleep cycles one by one. He appeared to me as a delicious cup of coffee! With his caffeine camo, I drank too much coffee on a daily basis and I didn’t know it. After I became aware, I set my sleep schedule and attempted to form a new habit. A morning routine coffee free! Take that Caffeine Chameleon!!

It wasn’t easy. Throughout the process I did a little grieving for the habit that once held me. My family and my coworkers enjoyed their morning cups around me. The smell brought on cravings but thanks to being well rested, my personal fortitude was stronger than some silly urge. Plus, I gave up coffee for Lent. The Big Buy upstairs was holding me accountable and I didn’t want to let him down! According to my Google Mini, Lent ended on April 1st, so on April 3rd I woke my wife at the crack of dawn for coffee! Being the wife of a sleep superhero has its challenges and on this Saturday, I was one of them. But she's a good sport and all roads lead to a delicious cup of coffee so she struggled out of bed and accompanied me to our favorite spot.

Lo and behold, my first cup of coffee was underwhelming and overwhelming all the same time.  The underwhelming part of it was the flavor was not as I remember it. Not exactly. Maybe in a few weeks after another cup or two I'll know whether or not I got a bad batch of coffee. Or perhaps just the memories of how good it was are exactly what they are, memories. My palate has changed since all I’ve had is tea with no sweetener or dairy. A customer of mine sent me some jasmine petals and it’s phenomenal. I enjoy that every morning instead!

The overwhelming part was how caffeine gripped my system for the next few hours. Holy smokes. On that first day, I remembered exactly why I wanted to stop in the first place.

You see, I can go from zero to “we're going to win” on a normal day with no caffeine in as quickly as I just did. No problemo. It's one of my super powers! High bursts of energy and voice volume. And with a great night's sleep I can harness that power and usually keep it in check. Add a cup of coffee to that superpower, throw in a busy showroom with customers asking questions a mile a minute, supply chain issues to wade through at 101 mph and it’s too much.  I don’t have the emotional control to keep as cool as a Tempur-Pedic Breeze bed wrapped in bamboo sheets in a perfectly maintained 68 degree bedroom on a hot summer night.

The Right Questions Will Save the Planet

The Right Questions Will Save the Planet

A typical day in Mattman’s morning routine is to wake up, prepare a warm tea, and do some stretching. I spend half an hour doing various tasks like chores, research, and reading. Then the final part of my wake up routine is spent smashing monsters for loot!  It’s my daily victory to accomplish this and it’s the first thing I do when my feet hit the floor. It gets me on the path of action! And the last couple of days, I have been listening to The FAM audio stories while I stretch. Among them, Mike it Up with the Goodbed boys Mike Magnuson and Jeff Cassidy.

They offer a lot of knowledge. Have you ever seen the pictures around Thanksgiving with tables overloaded with turkey, sides, deserts, and the like? Each episode is kinda like that picture! Or maybe it’s like visiting your wife’s Italian family on a Sunday for dinner and the food just doesn’t stop coming! Or… ahh. Okay. You get the point.

I’d like to shine a spotlight on their 7th and 8th episode in particular because it strikes a chord with me. It’s about pollution. I’ve already discussed light pollution and how that can affect our sleep habits. This is about landfill pollution. Wall-E style pollution. Real pollution and when you hear how many mattresses contribute to our carbon footprint and also to landfills, that information keeps me up at night!

Yes, the mattress industry can come to a reasonable standard for the best practices on comfort returns. Yes the customer can be threatened with return fees if they choose the wrong mattress with zero care of the consequences. And sure, we can cook up some crazy tech to monitor usage to guarantee cleanliness on returns to recycle the mattresses if they are brought back.  All of these are great ways to address the symptoms. But ladies and gentlemen of retail, it’s up to us to help that customer diagnose their ailments correctly. We’re the “doctors” in this analogy.

Even Superheroes Have Superheroes

Even Superheroes Have Superheroes

I always chuckle when I say, “It was all in a day’s work,” because I know all work is done during the day. And at night, it’s time for bed!

After a hard day’s work, I take off the Signature Super Sleep Superhero Suit to put my feet up for some downtime. I adhere to my bedtime routine every night to help me fall asleep as quickly as possible.

Even though I have a sleep system that is customized to my habits, it’s still not enough. And I came to realize this over the winter and I wanted to share a story that taught me this lesson.

In a previous episode, I mention the fact that I am a gamer. The Super Sleep Suit comes off when I get home, and yes I do take it off from time to time, like when I’m playing video games on my computer.

I hang out with my internet friends on Discord, an app that is kind of like an old-school party phone line. Except instead of you and ten of your neighbors on the call, it’s me and ten buddies from across the globe and we’re all playing video games together. In case anybody is curious, our main game of choice is called Path of Exile and we play the Hardcore League.

I love my online community which I’ve hung out with for four to five years now. We all work full-time jobs. We all have a family life. And we all like to smash monsters for loot. One day in January, we had a younger buddy, we’ll call him Dan, ask for some help.

He had some water coming through his floorboards in his room. As luck would have it, one of our other buddies, we’ll call him Mike, is a handyman. So Dan tells Mike what’s going. Dan used Discord’s live streaming feature to show Mike the water problem and see if he could tell him how to fix it. Turns out he couldn’t help him; Dan needed a plumber.

I got a message from Mike the next day. He literally said he couldn’t sleep that night. Mike is a 30-year old dude married with two kids and he goes to church. All around a great guy. He cares for others, so when he saw Dan’s room he asked a couple of gentle questions.

The answers confirmed what Mike saw in the room. He learned Dan didn’t have a mattress. He had blankets on the floor. And this escalated his water issue to a whole other level. Mike knows I work for a mattress and furniture company, so he offered to buy Dan a mattress. In Mike’s words “I don’t want to do this because I pity him. I know he needs this like he’s my brother. The emotion comes from somewhere else.”

So I suited up! It’s not every day that your friends beam the Mattsymbol into the sky and call upon their superhero buddy.

I immediately gave info to Hannah on the Dream Team and she contacted Colter on Team Malouf. This was January 2021 when there were unprecedented supply chain disruptions. We were looking for a full-size mattress for a 22-year old dude of average size and weight. Something that would be awesome and long term.

Colter didn’t have regular stock, but he went to work with some inventory that wasn’t in production anymore. He activated an old SKU that was kind of off the beaten path. They got it all ready and three days later, Dan had a full sleep system. He had a mattress, a metal platform frame, protector, sheets, and a pillow!  BOOOOOOMM-Shakala!!! (Play some vuvuzela horns like somebody just scored a goal #LOL).

This was a huge victory. In a time of high volatility. Dan got a great bed! And for the record, I’m in North Carolina. Dan was in the midwest a few states over from us. This is an amazing time to be a part of the mattress industry! The internet is an interesting thing when you look at the connections it can create. And in today’s world, of all days, we could help!

Let There Be Light, The Natural Kind, Yo.

Let There Be Light, The Natural Kind, Yo.

I’ve seen the comics, I’ve seen the movies. Shadowy corners and darkness, in general, are a forewarning that bad things are on the horizon.

It’s as if the moonless night sky was lending a hand to the thugs about to rob you down that dark alley. Don’t let the bad guys be the only ones teaming up with darkness! In the right environment, it can help you, too!

Our environments don’t choose to work for good or evil. Mother Nature never picks sides. But the reality is our technology culture can cause a natural disaster of its own. However, we can choose for our surroundings to impact us in a positive way with knowledge.

For instance, one fact from both Shawn Stevenson’s “Sleep Smarter” and Mathew Walker’s “Master Class The Science of Sleep” is the importance of getting outside and getting 30-minutes of light exposure as early as you can every day.

Don’t wear sunglasses! Soak in the sunlight! When your eyes are affected by the morning light, your brain will stop making certain hormones that cause drowsiness. But therein lies the problem. Artificial light from devices, phones, and light bulbs can do the same thing.

At 9:00 p.m., I want my body to be releasing sleepy time hormones like melatonin that make me drowsy and ready for bed. Most lights we use around the house hinder that process. And that is what is called light pollution.

I don’t know of a superhero out there that likes pollution. It’s in the contract. I, Mattman, do solemnly swear to fight against pollution. And light pollution is literally everywhere. When electricity came around, mankind sped into the future! Quality of life improved exponentially.  A century later, our environment is so well lit that we now see the consequences of our actions. Let’s dial it back to before electricity.

Oil lamps, torches, and bonfires were the TVs, overhead lights, and cell phones of the past, but their energy output is a different color. Fire puts out red light on the color spectrum and science has found it to be less disruptive with the brain’s ability to produce melatonin. When your brain makes enough melatonin, your body knows it’s time for sleep.

Back in the day, people didn’t have the same levels of distraction and light pollution that we experience. Who knew the old ways could be superior to our almighty smartphones and modern routines?

But I’m not going to give up my smartphone. Instead, I choose to change my behavior so that it enhances my productivity instead of hinders it. It’s bad enough I already spend too much time scrolling through Reddit.

Quick shout out to my favorite subreddit called /r/MasterReturns. It’s videos dedicated to dogs being reunited with their owners after an extended absence. I adore those heartwarming clips and before I know it, I’ve stayed up past my bedtime!  And if I just spent hours after sunset staring at a bright screen, it’s harder for me to fall asleep quickly.  That sounds like a long ride on the struggle bus tomorrow.

In “Sleep Smarter,” I learned one of the most surprising facts I didn’t know about our body’s sensitivity to light. It’s not just our eyes. Any surface of skin across our entire bodies can sense light.

Light shining on the back of your knee while resting in total darkness still sends your brain confusing signals. So the pollution isn’t just related to what you see but light exposure in general.  “But Mattman, if there’s light everywhere then I’m never going to get a good night’s sleep”  Rest easy! Don’t lose all hope!  Because we have… Super Sleep Solutions.

Caffeine-Free and No Freak Out

Caffeine-Free and No Freak Out

As a sleep superhero, I’ve absorbed volumes of knowledge about better rest, but I’m always learning more. While studying the various aspects of sleep, I came across some eye-opening facts about caffeine—if only you had seen my face when I read about it.

It was a somber moment because I realized I needed to drink less coffee in order to maximize my sleep. When you’re a grown man wearing a Superhero Sleep Suit, your face shouldn’t look as sad as mine did at that moment.

I read that caffeine hangs out in your bloodstream and in your brain for a long time after you drink it—much longer than I ever expected or would have guessed. Caffeine has a half-life of about 5-6 hours. If you aren’t familiar with the term half-life, let’s dive in.

Time for some quick maths.

Caffeine Math

Let’s say your workday is dragging on. It’s 2:30 p.m. and you’re on the struggle bus again. So the plan is to grab a cup of coffee or an energy drink at 3 p.m. to make it to the end of your shift. Fast forward six hours and it’s now 9 p.m. Fifty percent of the caffeine you drank is still swirling around in places that should be winding down. Fast forward a little further to 11 p.m., and 25 percent of that caffeine is still hanging out doing what it does best. And for the record, shots of tequila do not negate the effects of caffeine. (It’s actually much worse, but alcohol is a whole other episode!)

So, now that you know what I know, I will share that up until February 17, 2021 I drank at least two cups and sometimes as many as five cups of coffee in a day. It was built into my routine for years and previous attempts to stop had proved unsuccessful. However, I have some new tools in the tool belt. Both Matthew Walker’s Master Class “Science of Sleep,” as well as the book “Atomic Habits” by James Clear on breaking and building new habits. And now I am proudly on the other side of the fence. Coffee-free and feeling great.

I won’t lie. The first few days were miserable! I had a headache for two solid days. I still craved a warm cup of something, so I substituted it with caffeine-free tea. I cleaned up my coffee maker and put it in the garage, hidden away. Out of sight, out of mind! And while it was a rough start, I made extra sure to keep to a tight sleep routine schedule so if the moment came of weakness, I would make the right decision.

It had been floated before that Mattman without coffee was still a high-energy dude. It is a lot of fun proving that theory to be correct! I’m not one to drink a lot of energy drinks, soda, or much else with caffeine, so by quitting coffee, I nixed a good 95 percent of caffeine from my daily diet.

I don’t miss it as much as I thought. And the biggest difference I feel in my routine comes around 9 p.m. when I’m starting my wind down. My body is ready for bed! I recall forcing myself to sleep and now my mattress is calling my name! (Full disclosure I’m not on a first-name basis with my mattress, it doesn’t actually speak to me).

It’s no coincidence that Feb. 17th, 2021 is also the kick-off to Lent, a religious observance six weeks prior to Easter. The tradition is you give something up during Lent. So, now I share with my customers that I have given up coffee as an icebreaker. The replies I get are hysterical and passionate! I see a lot of my previous mindset in the quick “no way, Jose” Heisman-hand at the mere mention of somebody stopping coffee consumption. But the reality is some of those people are shopping to get a better night’s sleep and no matter what I say, their caffeine consumption is not going to change.

Fight From a Foundation of Sleep

Fight From a Foundation of Sleep

We’ve been in the new year for a while now. And 2021 has already been around the block! Lately, I have asked many of my customers, colleagues, and friends if they have stuck with any New Year’s resolutions.

I have heard a few yes replies and a few no replies. But what strikes me about the no response is a common add-on phrase uttered by most of the people I talk to: “I tried.” I’ve heard things like, “I tried to lose weight. I’ve tried to quit smoking. I tried to learn this discipline. I tried to break this old habit.”

Well folks, I have a theory about this common no response. You are exhausted. Your brain is so depleted, it can’t even spell the word tired right, and it’s incorrectly substituting tried for tired.

In his Master Class, “The Science of Better Sleep,” Dr. Matthew Walker, a scientist and professor of neuroscience and psychology at the University of California, Berkeley, explains that most fitness plans that say diet, exercise, and sleep are equally essential to high performance are wrong. Diet and exercise are pillars but sleep is the foundation on which those pillars are built. And sleep isn’t just the foundation to the pillars of fitness, it’s the bedrock for forming habits and making decisions that help you achieve goals.

When it comes to fitness and weight loss, when Walker explained the importance of sleep I immediately thought of the joust battle from the 1990’s show American Gladiators. Growing up, my little brother and I loved watching the Gladiators on Saturday night! The joust challenge has one a Gladiator on one pillar facing an opponent on the other. Each warrior gets a giant Q-tip to do battle. The first warrior to knock the other person off their platform wins. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, it’s worth a Google or Youtube search for the haircuts alone!

Imagine you are the gladiator and you’re holding that jousting stick in your hands. The left puffy ball is your diet and the right puffy ball is exercise. Beneath you, the platform on which you balance to remain in the game is your sleep. When that opposing gladiator (which represents life) starts swinging their stick at you, how will you use diet and exercise effectively without a solid foundation beneath you?

Keeping your balance is the single most important thing when fighting the joust. And you can’t just take hits. You’re supposed to strike back! In your daily routine, you need to be able to make good nutritional decisions and it is easier to make the right choice when you are well-rested. You need to have energy and drive from a solid sleep schedule to be more likely to choose the gym or your workout routine over the old habit of choosing not to. And sometimes, you need to push your own limits and start using the Q-Tip and make your opponent be the one-off balance!

The moment you don’t have that solid foundation beneath you, the Q-tip is useless and the contestant is thrown from their platform. And there you go! Down onto the mat!

So now, I’m asking you to try again. 2021 is just getting started! Pull yourself up and get back in the fight.

More Bruce Wayne Than Superman

More Bruce Wayne Than Superman

I’m not the only one. There were, and are, several mattress superheroes out there. Most of them before my time.

You may be surprised to find out how many hours I have spent scouring the tenth page of google looking for these former sleep superheroes. What I found is they’re all following Superman’s lead. The power to leap a tall building in a single bound! Personally, I’m not a huge fan of Superman. He was born great. He is already strong and fast. Those powers came to him by default.

Bruce Wayne, on the other hand, had to achieve greatness! Granted he was born into wealth, but the mechanical ingenuity and martial arts skills are not a result of being born with a silver spoon in his mouth. We do not all come preprogrammed to somersault while kicking a bad guy while simultaneously firing a bat hook to swing up a ledge while throwing a Batarang to catch another bad guy. He had to train hard for years to learn those skills.

So then there’s me. Mattman. I’m a regular dude who works a full-time job, married with fur children, a huge fan of science fiction, plays video games, thumps bass guitars, and used to think the only exceptional thing I did was give blood every eight weeks to save a stranger’s life. I changed when I unlocked a superpower. I transformed and have more energy. I can accomplish tasks faster. I can focus my creativity to go where it’s never gone before. And when I awoke that superpower, I wanted to achieve greatness!

So I set out to design the Signature Super Sleep Superhero Suit that you have seen in pictures when I traverse around as Mattman! Like Batman, I also have many suits for many situations. My original suit is called The Promo Armor. It’s our promotional mattress fabric and we wear it at boot camp 5ks where we have to crawl uphill, do burpees, and possibly fall in mud. I also wear it at events where spilling coffee or wine is as likely as the sun will rise in the morning. My second suit is green and has breathable Tencel fabric derived from the eucalyptus plant for a dryer, cooler sleep experience. It is the fabric from the Scandinavian mattress line at our store. I wear that when I run 5ks so I don’t overheat. And my current suit is my dressy black-tie uniform. Looks great in photos with a functioning piano necktie!

My suits are made with utility. Much like Batman, the toolbelt is where he can improvise. Each suit has a custom inner breast pocket just big enough for a phone and wallet. Ever tried getting into your pockets wearing a mattress suit? The suits also include a large catch pocket inside that fits a hard copy of Shawn Stevenson’s Sleep Smarter which I use as a quick reference to help teach sleep. That book is my American Express. I never leave home without it! The suits are equipped with handles on the sides because some people believe all mattresses should have handles. Mine are referred to as my love handles as they reside exactly where you imagine they would go on my suit! And of course, I saved the best for last…the cape! Not all superheroes wear a cape. But ones who design suits tend to prefer them! What isn’t more awesome when it is wearing a cape?

Don’t worry folks! Batman is still out there keeping us safe. I’m not getting in his way. In the middle of the night when he perches on rooftops and swoops down on evildoers, I am fast asleep.  I know that I can’t be extraordinary tomorrow without a good night’s rest!

One Shot Every Decade

One Shot Every Decade

As mattress RSAs, it is critical that we teach everybody about the fundamentals of sleep. You only get one shot a decade, if you’re lucky! They may buy a bed online or from a different store near you.

But if they came to you…

In my
origin story, I shared a tidbit about running a 5k for years with the same results, and how putting on a mattress suit forced me to change my strategy.  When a customer buys a bed from you, that new mattress will have a similar effect on their very first nighttime routine. First impressions with a new product that we say takes weeks to break in and may not be comfortable right away.  You wonder how anybody can have a great night’s sleep on dusk one.

Sure, their old mattress was worn out and it was time.  The squeaking was driving them nuts and the rolling uphill was annoying. But when the new $2,500 bed doesn’t knock their socks off because they had no idea drinking caffeine at 7 p.m. made it so much harder to fall asleep, whose problem is that? They had no idea working in their bedroom creates muscle memory, so your brain associates work stress with going to bed. They had no idea staring at a bright phone screen for hours up until the point they shut their eyes is like drinking coffee up until the point they shut their eyes.

You get one chance a decade, if you’re lucky. They are potentially buying a mattress from you that can make their body comfortable. But what if they sleep on the bed in conditions not conducive to uninterrupted sleep? The mattress was delivered to their bedroom but it may as well have been set up under a fireworks display or in a bouncing car.

As professionals in our field, it is up to us to do some homework. Seek out information from other professionals. Look for books. If you can’t stand reading, try audiobooks or watch videos. Seeking out information about sleep and applying what you learn to your own life will help you grow. And it will give you the best chance to teach your customer and help them become aware. That awareness will help them awaken their superpowers locked inside them!

Congratulations, you sold that mattress! It got delivered right on time. They are super excited to try their new bed. So much so they changed their bedtime routine in honor and preparation for their first night’s sleep. You told them about how cool sheets help them fall asleep faster and they bought those from you and put them on the mattress. You had told them about no screens, so they put their phones down 30 minutes before bed.  You told them about caffeine, and they held to a caffeine curfew of 2 p.m. You also told them about how important it is to have a dark room so they fixed their drapes and now they cannot see that annoying streetlight all night long. They crawl into bed and fall asleep right away.  They got four sleep cycles when they used to get two. You just doubled the amount of sleep on the first night. They have one of the best night’s sleep they can remember.  And you were the person to help them wake up and feel better, more alive!

Congratulations!

Don’t assume your customers know about the nuances of circadian rhythms and best practices from sleep experts. They’re lives are busy and they have other things on their priority list. So it’s our duty to teach and grow awareness. Educate your customers about  sleep and you are helping them become superheroes!

Awakening Your Superpowers

Awakening Your Superpowers

When you take control of your sleep and awaken your superpowers, you will have gone through a transformation.  You will become more powerful!  Look at whatever is on your to-do list tomorrow and ask yourself, “Is this harder or easier with a good night’s sleep?”  Or my favorite side of that coin asks, “How much easier is this to-do list with my superpowers on?”

Have you ever planned out how much sleep you are going to get?  This is a super-easy way to test your superpowers.  It’s so easy it sounds dumb.  Put it on your calendar.  Your Google calendar, a sleep tracker or sleep app, or write it on a real calendar with a pen or pencil.  Even better.  Got anything big coming up on the horizon?  Any big deadline or an event you are planning?  Training you’re supposed to do? Do you have a fitness goal you are trying to reach?  Let us focus on awakening your superpower for that specific event and plan one week in advance!

Take five minutes to sit down and plot this out.  A typical sleep cycle is 90 minutes and it’s better to set your alarm, so you don’t interrupt one.  You will get your best benefits from a sleep cycle between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m.

So, here’s an example: My normal spontaneous routine is to go to bed around 11 p.m. and wake up at 6 a.m. My maximum sleep cycle count is 28 per week.  And because everything always goes as planned, one night I got distracted gaming with my buddies and I stayed up until 1 a.m.  Another morning my neighbor banged their garbage cans and woke me up at 5 a.m.  Now my cycle count max is 24.  And more bad news, it can drop even lower.  But we’re looking for superpowers so I’m writing a sleep schedule for myself. I will go to bed at 9:30 p.m. and wake up at 5 a.m. My maximum sleep cycle count is now 35. Same distractions occur and I’m down to 31.  I’ve added more sleep cycle potential and also during the peak benefit hours. That’s how you unlock superpowers!

Here is my favorite reason to try and get as many sleep cycles as I can.  Do you think the Super Villains stay up 24/7? How do you think they awaken their own negative energy to go out and disrupt the lives of all of us?  Not on an empty tank… that’s for certain!

You may not be worried about Super Sleep Villains like I am. Villains like Miss Information who sets up bogus mattress review sites. Or the Pandemic and Political Energy Vampires posting negativity on social media and leeching from your sleep cycles. But maybe you don’t face off against the same Villains as I do.

Maybe it is a rival in your sport or profession. Maybe it is a competitor in your market.  I guarantee you they are also working hard, training hard, and trying to become more powerful by the day!  The old saying goes “What do you have to lose?” Potential. Power. Opportunity. Your sleep matters!

When you look at your calendar and you see that time blocked off for sleeping, look at it with a new perspective. It is not just going to bed.  It is supercharging.  It is not wasting time or taking up precious productivity hours. It is accelerating the speed at which you perform critical tasks.  Sleep is a catalyst to the ideas and actions that drive you. Fill your tank with high octane fuel!  Awaken your superpowers and show your villains who the superhero really is!

The Origin Story

The Origin Story

It all started at dawn on Thanksgiving day 2018. Yep. Dawn! Not 3 p.m. on a Friday or 10 a.m. on a Monday. I’m a sleep superhero for crying out loud. Dawn!

The Dream Team sponsors and runs in the annual Mooresville Christian Mission Turkey Trot every year. When the pistol fired to start the 2018 race, a giant crowd of 1,800 people charged through downtown Mooresville, NC!  It was awesome!

Some runners like to wear crazy pants, others wore turkey hats, and a few of us on the Dream Team suited up in our promotional mattress costumes leftover from a High School fundraiser earlier that year. For years we wanted to run the races with a twin size mattress strapped to our backs. Or maybe two of us could carry a king size mattress the whole race. The suits were an entertaining compromise!  We pinned Dream Team shirts to the back of each one to let people know “We are the Dream Team!”  It was a lot of fun!

By the way, the Dream Team refers to the staff and owners of Sweet Dreams Mattress and Furniture. We’re a family-owned, four-store operation in the Lake Norman, North Carolina area.

My normal pace at this event, the four years prior, was 56 minutes. Not a fast 5k! But I don’t train or prepare. I’m not a runner. My expectations were even lower that year wearing a five-pound windcatcher.

Mattress suits are not aerodynamic at all.

Along the way, runners and spectators cheered and jeered at my outfit. I was mistaken for an oven mitt and a piece of toast! In my witty replies and in the heat of the moment, I found a pun-worthy response by shouting “I’m Mattman!”

That year, I crossed the finish line a few seconds past 44 minutes. I was extremely proud of myself! I did not know I could run that fast!  Zero preparation, zero training. I just rolled out of one bed and into another!

Wearing the mattress suit had changed my pace. In previous years I started too fast and after a short stretch, I slowed to walk/run for the remainder of the 5k. The mattress suit slowed me down at the beginning. My initial pace never overwhelmed me and I trotted slow and steady from start to finish. Shaved 12 minutes right of the top.

I spent the next few months developing my Signature Super Sleep Superhero Suit to run in more 5k’s. All around Lake Norman, I wanted to run them all! Like a superhero’s band of expert brethren, the Dream Team rushed to my aide with sleep tips. We had meetings to discuss developing a bedtime routine, a wake-up routine, and learned ways to fall asleep quickly, and ways to stay asleep for long periods of uninterrupted rest.

After ten 5k races in 2019, my time was down to 32 minutes. Again, I was not working out, training, or running in my free time. I am not a runner. But a good night’s sleep had awakened one of my superpowers, which is the ability to focus. I knew my pace. I knew what to expect. With a good night’s sleep, I could focus and push myself. I could reach new limits!  And that was the fun part of it. Every race was a different track and a different course. Regardless, I could perform at a higher level every time.

As a result of that first successful 5k, I have become Mattman! Not a day goes by that I do not have a Signature Super Sleep Superhero Suit within arm’s reach. I am always on call except when I’m sleeping and always ready to fight the things that keep you up at night!

By the power of the pillow, the might of the mattress, and the surety of the sheets, I hope to help everybody sleep better at night so they can awaken their own superpowers to use in their daily lives.
