and so we meet again

and so we meet again

By Anna and Layne Sheetz
and so we meet again is a podcast for humans who are curious about exploring how faith interacts with everything in life. And so we meet again regularly to talk about a variety of different topics stretching from theology to young adult novels and movies. As pastors we hope to be a resource for other pastors seeking another perspective and for anyone seeking answers or more importantly: asking questions.

We think the more we find God in our professions and in our hobbies the closer we get to understanding the heart and nature of God.

We hope you join us at our table!

Round Table with Rob Howe
Episode 3.07 Anna and Layne are joined by Rob Howe (publisher of HawkeyeNation) to discuss a myriad of topics.  From his time covering Iowa sports to his experience with the legends of college athletics- Rob has experienced more than most and shares his thoughts and stories.   Most of the conversation revolves around Rob's work recently.  In the aftermath of George Floyd's murder in Minneapolis many college athletes began to use their voices to advocate for change.  Iowa was no different- in fact Iowa was the front of a huge discovery of social and racial injustices within the program.  Rob was the reporter who received many of the reports from players and passed them on.  We talked with Rob about how he uses his privilege and platform to amplify the voices of those who do not have the platform.   This is a conversation you won't want to miss.  If you aren't a life long Hawkeye fan you may hear some names or dates you don't understand - we encourage you to look them up and learn about some Hawkeye football greats.   Support Braden Gall and Our Kids here:  https://ourkidscenter.kindful.com/its-up-to-us-2020/braden-gall?fbclid=IwAR2fdnbnh30Tk5rOJj7PnHRoAyNyE84zYWY_ftNzCZAg4G6gpm-DMw2Ra58 Find us online:  facebook: @andsowemeetagainpod twitter: @ASWMApod instagram: @andsowemeetagainpod anchor: https://anchor.fm/andsowemeetagain iTunes, google, wherever podcasts are available email: andsowemeetagainpod@gmail.com

This episode features a few pauses and rephrases which were intentionally left in to show how we were and are working through and learning together during these conversations as well.  We are so grateful to have had the chance to chat with Kelsey and hope you find the conversation transforming and inspiring.   Connect with Kelsey at : kelseypacha.com or search Kelsey Pacha Consulting on facebook. Episode 2.03 Anna and I are joined by an old friend from California (by way of Iowa, now in Kansas City), Gerry Pickett.  Gerry was a mentor of Layne's during his internship and early stages of his ordination that he began in the Free Methodist Church.  Gerry currently is the pastor of a church plant, Northtown Church in Kansas City, along with a "day job" in ministry as well.  He was part of a church plant in Pasadena as well and has a wealth of information and wisdom when it comes to church planting.   Moreover,  our main conversation with Gerry continues our conversation of call.  What does and did his call look like? Does he even believe in call?  Plus: Anna figures out T.U.L.I.P. to the tune of yackety sax. It is fun talking to a Wesleyan again! Call and Response
Episode 2.01 Anna and Layne are BACK! Don't call it a come back...they really have been here the whole time.  This season they aren't just using one word titles!  Anyway, back to first person.  We take a look at what it means to be called.  What does it mean to be called literally? Like what is it? Anna revisits 1 Samuel 3 and Layne reads about the disciples dropping their nets.   We discuss more of the nitty gritty of 'call' and that it is for everyone.  Missing your call is not really a thing but mishearing it sure can happen.  That and so much more! Episode 1.25 Did you know Scalawag is spelled like that? Well, it is.   Anna and Layne survived VBX and are here to talk through it.  We time warp back and forth from April to last week to the present- over and over again- in order to understand the who, what, why, when, and how of this year's VBX.  Using last week's episode as a reference, we talk about writing our own curriculum and the importance of the music that went with it.  The community and feedback that came with it empowered everyone involved.  We talk about this year and dream a bit about next year...without giving away too much.  Stay tuned for more to come! Whether you are involved in our VBX, help volunteer or run your own, or just are curious about what it looks like to be nearly buried by chaos we hope this episode added something to your day.  Music by: happygolovely, Arrgh! Round Table with Landon Sheetz and Joey Loboda
Episode 1.24 After over a month of desperate anticipation - Lunch Break has taken over and so we meet again.  Layne sits down with Landon Sheetz and Joey Loboda (of Lunch Break, Not Good Not Bad Productions, and most recently Arrgh! A Pirate Band) to talk about a number of random topics.  Anna was traveling to New Jersey with Oliver when this episode was recorded but joined Layne for the intro and outro.  While learning a bit about Landon and Joey we get a bit more information about their creative process when it comes to everything from podcasts to the movies that they have made.   Ultimately, though, this episode is not just a night of pure comedy (although it is) it is our chance to talk with the songwriters for our VBX (Vacation Bible Experience) songs.  As we have mentioned before, we have been writing our own VBX curriculum this year and all of it essentially hinged on whether Landon and Joey could lend a musical hand.  They answer hard hitting questions about the process of coming up with songs for something so specific and what it was like to think about and write about God in genders or pronouns outside of "he".   Really- the whole thing is just a gold mine of fun times.  Check it out and check out Landon and Joey's podcast(s) online at:  https://www.facebook.com/NGNBProductions/ https://www.instagram.com/notgnotbproductions/ and download their podcast here: https://anchor.fm/lunch-break or wherever you get your podcasts!  ALL music from this episode courtesy of Arrgh! Bible on the Road: Genesis 37-50
Episode 1.22 Anna and Layne are live from West Lafayette, Indiana sitting in the downstairs lounge of a (thankfully) well Air Conditioned Purdue University residence hall.   While traveling to Indiana for Presbyterian Youth Triennium, a once every three years epic event for Presbyterian youth from around the world, we stole away during a meal time to check in on Joseph and finish the book of Genesis.   We look at Joseph and what his "coat of many colors" or "robe with sleeves" actually meant for him...and what it means for us today.   We explore how this story of Joseph and his family sets up Exodus and everything that is to come in the Bible.  If you want to look more at Joseph and his brothers check out last week's episode feature Rich McCarty as we addressed some of the language Joseph uses when forgiving his brothers.   Thank you for joining us on this journey through the Bible! Round Table One Off: Genesis 50 with Rich McCarty
Episode 1.21 As Anna and Layne wrap up their journey through Genesis Rich McCarty  joins them again to explore some themes in the book of Genesis, the story of Joseph, and the Bible as a whole.  Rich essentially leads this episode as the three of them go on a quest to understand some huge topics in Christian theology and what they mean for us on a day to day basis as ministers and as friends.  Anna and Layne will wrap the Joseph story (Genesis 37-50) in the near future but this episode lent itself well to reflecting on Genesis as a whole and getting another voice back on the podcast as part of our Bible on the Road series (crossing over with the Round Table)  Rich has a phD in Religious Studies from the University of Iowa and is a professor at Mercyhurst University.  He is a published author of a book titled Sexual Virtue: An Approach to Contemporary Christian Ethics.   This is the third of three (currently scheduled) appearances on the podcast by Rich and we cannot thank him enough for joining us for so long! B.I.B.L.E.
Episode 1.10 Talk about a kick off to a new series.  Anna and Layne meet at the table to discuss what the Bible is to them- generally.  Anna has a brilliant idea to do 115 episodes worth of Bible content starting in Genesis and ending in Revelation. Layne said okay.  If you know Enneagram- she is a 1 and he is a 9.  If you don't...they'll be an episode on that later!  Today, Anna and Layne look briefly at the Bible and conception and perceptions people have about it.  They read from Luke 24:13-27 to explore a bit of the question: Why does the Old Testament matter? Anna hasn't heard the song Basic Instructions Before Leaving Earth (B.I.B.L.E.) and Layne apparently didn't realize it was performed by GZA of Wu Tang.  So that all worked out nicely.  It is the Monday night after Holy Week and three days before Avengers End Game comes out so cut everyone some slack and enjoy this episode as we prepare for a ton of Bible fun moving forward! Week
Episode 1.09 What a difference a week can make.  Holy Week is one of most sacred times of the year for the church.  Layne and Anna explore the Gospel of Mark and examine the significance of the events leading up to Jesus' resurrection as well as the the who, what, when, why, where, and how of after the resurrection.   We invite you to spend the last 10 minutes of the episode in more of a meditative position and let the Easter story empower and challenge you in a potentially new and different way.  Listen through the verse of the song at the end as well - 'Death in His Grave' by John Mark McMillan.   Oh, and Layne gets the Yackety Sax treatment when he makes some weird half baked revelations about how the Genesis 1 creation story might speak to Good Friday.   With music snippets from John Mark McMillan, Derek Webb, happygolovely, and Landon Sheetz and Joey Loboda (Not Good Not Bad Productions)  Don't forget to rate, review, and subscribe!  You can find us online at:  facebook: @andsowemeetagainpod twitter: @ASWMApod instagram: @andsowemeetagainpod anchor: https://anchor.fm/andsowemeetagain iTunes, google, wherever podcasts are available

Episode 1.07  It is fitting that our episode on Jesus the Redeemer lands a holy number- seven.   Anna and Layne explore the redeeming and reclaiming qualities of Jesus by looking through passages in Matthew 8 and 9. There is some conversation about how Jesus fits into social media, a plug for the Netflix Sabrina series (as well as a shoutout to the Melissa Joan Hart version), and some Yackety Sax.  All in all- you won't want to miss this conversation!  For the article regarding the politician and the death penalty you can find that here - https://trib.com/news/state-and-regional/govt-and-politics/wyoming-senate-defeats-death-penalty-repeal-bill/article_0603777b-4059-5101-ab92-3731036c4478.html Find us online and don't forget to rate, review, and subscribe! facebook: @andsowemeetagainpod twitter: @ASWMApod instagram: @andsowemeetagainpod anchor: https://anchor.fm/andsowemeetagain iTunes, google, wherever podcasts are available

Creator
Episode 1.06 In Part 2 of the 4 part series looking at the being of God Anna and Layne talk about the Creator God looking at ancient creation stories and Biblical Scriptures.   By pulling apart a specific story about God's interaction with one person (Elijah), we can better pull apart and parse through what and who the being and character of the Creator God is.  This allows us to zoom in and get a closer look at one facet of God before turning our attention to other aspects.   Where does the Creator God find us?  Where do we find the Creator God?  When talking about the Creator God we are referring to "God the Father", "God the Mother", or "YAHWEH" etc.   Portions of 1 Kings 18 and 19 are used in this discussion looking at Elijah and his interaction with God and the prophets of Ba'al.  Don't forget to connect with us online! facebook: @andsowemeetagainpod twitter: @ASWMApod instagram: @andsowemeetagainpod anchor: https://anchor.fm/andsowemeetagain iTunes, google, wherever podcasts are available

It
Episode 1.05 This episode Anna and Layne discuss their experience with God- who God is to them now and when they were younger.  Layne refers to God as "It" constantly while Anna explains the significance of referring to God as both he and she with a story from her time in seminary.   This episode is the beginning of a four part series looking at God the Creator, Redeemer, and Sustainer.  4:30 into the episode Anna references verses from 1 Samuel 3 33:20 into the episode there is a short clip from the song 'White Man' by Michael Gungor 34:25 into the episode Anna reads from The Magician's Nephew  by C.S. Lewis: "The two wonders happened at the same moment. One was that the voice was suddenly joined by other voices; more voices than you could possibly count. They were in harmony with it, but far higher up the scales: cold, tingling, silvery voices.  The second wonder was that the blackness overhead, all at once, was blazing with stars.  They didn't come gently one by one, as they do on a summer evening.  One moment there had been nothing but darkness; next moment a thousand, thousand points of light leaped out- single stars, constellations, and planets, brighter and bigger than any in our world.  There were no clouds.  The new stars and the new voices began at exactly the same time.  If you had seen and heard it, as Digory did, you would have felt quite certain that it was the stars themselves which were singing, and that it was the First Voice, the deep one, which had made them appear and made them sing."  Other music provided by happygolovely and Ben Garrett You can connect with us on social media here:  facebook: @andsowemeetagainpod twitter: @ASWMApod instagram: @andsowemeetagainpod anchor: https://anchor.fm/andsowemeetagain iTunes, google, wherever podcasts are available
