#AND3RSON #HeartFailureSurvivor #EnduranceAthlete  In March of 2020, I slipped on the illegally dumped cooking grease in front of John’s Burger and couldn’t walk for 6 weeks. This was my first injury since I started Endurance Training in 1979. Then in late April of 2020, I ended up in the hospital for the first time in my life. The diagnosis was Congestive Heart Failure.   This Vlog / Podcast documents my Sixth Decade of Endurance Training. The past Decade was about HOW FAR I could go.  This Decade will be about HOW FAST can I go post Congestive Heart Failure. https://linktr.ee/AND3RSON

Andy & The Jester Talk ClubHouse and the Race to a Hundred 100 Mile Finishes

By the end of 1999 a few prolific ultrarunners had piled up 100-mile finishes. Richard and Sandra Brown of England were way out in front with 87 and 82, reaching 100 miles in both running and walking events. Ray Krolewicz of South Carolina was next with about 60 100-mile finishes to his name. Don Choi, the prolific multi-day runner from San Francisco, had more than 40 100-mile finishes but had retired from 100-mile running in 1997 at the age of 48. The world’s greatest, Yiannis Kouros had an estimated 40 100-milers, most of them wins. But as the decades passed, in 2021, there were 18 talented ultrarunners who had achieved 100 100 milers.  Who are they? https://ultrarunninghistory.com/100-100-milers/ Clubhouse is an invitation-only audio-chat iPhone app launched in April 2020 by Paul Davison and Rohan Seth of Alpha Exploration Co. that facilitates auditory communication for groups of a few individuals up to over 5,000 people. In May 2020, the social networking app was valued at nearly $100 million.   #AND3RSON #HeartFailureSurvivor #EnduranceAthlete In March of 2020, I slipped on the illegally dumped cooking grease in front of John’s Burger and couldn’t walk for 6 weeks. What You Need to Know About the Barkley Marathons

What You Need to Know About the Barkley Marathons

The Barkley Marathons is one the hardest races in the ultrarunning world. Created by founder Gary “Lazarus Lake” Cantrell, the race provides one of the most grueling ultramarathons ever created.  The Barkley Marathons has gained in popularity over the past few years, mostly because of new documentaries and stories that take you inside the race weekend. One of the most popular is The Race That Eats Its Young, which came out in 2014. Another new film, titled Where Dreams Go to Die, documents the two-year stretch where ultrarunner Gary Robbins attempted to complete all five loops. You can view it on YouTube now.  #AND3RSON #HeartFailureSurvivor #EnduranceAthlete In March of 2020, I slipped on the illegally dumped cooking grease in front of John’s Burger and couldn’t walk for 6 weeks. LA County just announces pathway for multi-team events (invitationals) What a run!  Chris Thompson, 22 days shy of his 40th birthday, was 35 secs behind the leaders at 30k of today's British Olympic marathon trials. But he closed hard to win the race in a PB (2:10:50), securing the Olympic standard, to clinch his second Olympic berth. This was Chris Thompson's marathon progression prior to winning today's British Olympic trials in 2:10:50. He still logged some solid times at shorter distances in that span (notably a 61:07 half last year), but today's run was quite a turnaround -- and the marathon of his life. Was curious when talk would turn to Thompson's footwear today (he was wearing blacked-out Vaporflys). The supershoes have put companies like On in a tough position, but you have to applaud them for putting their athletes first. Counterintuitive Bodily Responses, and Why They Happen

Counterintuitive Bodily Responses, and Why They Happen

A sports scientist explains why our bodies seem to be working against us at times.  Counterintuitive Response #1: Vomiting and Diarrhea in Hot Weather So, vomiting and diarrhea are not a response to dehydration, but rather, a response to over-hydration + exercise-induced nausea. “Our bodies are plenty smart. We’re foolish for trying to make them do something unnecessary.”  In other words, user error.  Counterintuitive Response #2: Training-Induced Insomnia  So sleeplessness is your body’s way of indicating it’s blown past normal sleepiness, and is in survival mode, something you may not have realized. It’s a waving red flag. A precursor, Tucker said, to Force Quit: “At some point the body will begin to shut down or cut out the processes essential to life in an attempt to help us recover.”   Again, user error.  Counterintuitive Response #3: Inflammation  Tucker defends the physiological programming: “We have regulation of normal physiology, even for very stressful situations — prolonged exercise without fluid, acute or chronic injury, or very hard exercise that makes us hungry for sleep. But we kind of force things on ourselves — drinking more than needed, or training despite lack of sleep, or continuing to train despite injury and pain — and responses designed to help us instead cause problems. Our stupidity, ironically, turns the body’s ‘cleverness’ into a disadvantage.” https://www.podiumrunner.com/nutrition/health/counterintuitive-bodily-responses-and-why-they-happen/ #AND3RSON #HeartFailureSurvivor #EnduranceAthlete In March of 2020, I slipped on the illegally dumped cooking grease in front of John’s Burger and couldn’t walk for 6 weeks. World Women: Gudaf Tsegay (Ethiopia) Gudaf Tsegay’s campaign was brief but brilliant. She debuted on February 09 with the only WR of the year on the women’s side, a 3:53.09 in the 1500. Just 5 days later she ran the year’s fastest 800 (1:57.52) to move to No. 9 on the all-time list, and 10 days after that tacked on the year’s fastest 3000, an 8:22.65 that made her No. 2 ever.  U.S. Women: Athing Mu (Texas A&M)  Even though she didn’t win a major individual title, Athing Mu was all over the indoor stats. She was the world leader in the 600 (1:25.80) plus U.S. leader in the 400 (50.52) & 800 (1:58.40). The 600 wasn’t a PR, but she moved to No. 4 on the all-time U.S. 400 list and No. 2 in the 800. And to top it off, her 49.54 relay leg at the NCAA was the fastest in world history.  Honorable mentions: Elle Purrier set an American Record of 9:10.28 in the 2M (with a list-leading 8:36.41 en route in the 3000); Vashti Cunningham moved to =No. 3 on the all-time U.S. list with her indoor PR 6-6¾ (2.00).  High School Sydney Thorvaldson (Rawlins, Wyoming) she churned out the yearly leaders in the mile (4:43.90), 3000 (9:09.70) and 2M (9:47.95 for the No. 2 performance ever).  Unlike Thursday and Friday, Saturday and Sunday have been dry and pleasant.  The yellow gate stands waiting for next year's rematch with some of the best trail runners in the world.   @BStulberg Routines 101: -Serve as bedrocks of predictability. -Create sense of order amidst disorder. -Automate action; allow you to show up and get going without thinking about what to do. -Help all kinds of people. -No magic one. -Change over time. -Be able to let go (if need be).  Harvey Lewis has won with 55 yards; Jennifer Russo gets the assist. Amazing work by both runners.  How about this for your Monday morning! Age has no limits as 55 year-old Jennifer Russo battles Harvey Lewis into day 3 at the Ohio Backyard. Yard 50 begins with 204+ miles complete. https://twitter.com/AndyNoise #AND3RSON #HeartFailureSurvivor #EnduranceAthlete In March of 2020, I slipped on the illegally dumped cooking grease in front of John’s Burger and couldn’t walk for 6 weeks. Sixteen runners completed the first loop before the time cutoff, and just two runners, Jared Campbell and Luke Nelson, set off to attempt a third loop (which they didn’t finish in time). Only 15 runners have ever finished the race since it began in 1986. The artistic bounty continues at Panorama Park, which will unveil the latest murals from a collaborative project on Monday.   This is the second phase of the Panorama Park beautification initiative, which began last year with the painting of 21 utility boxes, water pumps and trashcans throughout the park, completed by 20 artists. The effort was completed through a partnership with Supervisor Mike Maggard’s office, the Arts Council of Kern and the county’s General Services Department. https://www.bakersfield.com/entertainment/arts-theater/artists-embrace-natural-beauty-for-panorama-park-murals/article_4b4ede40-fb51-11e9-a1f9-47974d75e462.html While many ultrarunners stick to highly scientific approaches to training and nutrition, the 34-year-old part-time nurse prefers to keep things simple, unstructured and fun. Rory runs because she loves it, and it shows in her accessorized athlete kit (think puffy paint and glitter), her training (run when she feels like it, rest when she’s tired), her nutrition (homemade pouches of avocado and sweet potatoes and gummy bears) and her season goals, which always include running rugged traverses or remote coastlines in far-flung locales. Rory’s extracurricular activities include SUP, yoga, skiing and biking, and the self-proclaimed “eternal nerd” spends her indoor time doing crossword puzzles and reading historical non-fiction. https://www.thenorthface.com/about-us/athletes/rory-bosio.html In March of 2020, I slipped on the illegally dumped cooking grease in front of John’s Burger and couldn’t walk for 6 weeks. Beta Blocker Dreams, USATF 15k and Barkley Marathons / March 20, 2021

@BStulberg Just like you become your habits, you also become the people with whom you surround yourself. Choose wisely.  You might think this means happy or positive people. But I'd challenge you to also think about it as authentic, vulnerable, honest, humble, and curious people too.  When @daddy_drinks decided to spend a month practicing various breathing exercises, he went all in. He even started taping his lips shut before bed, which, of course, sounds odd. But the results are hard to argue with.  Dominant win for Emily Sisson at the USATF 15K champs in Jacksonville.  Meanwhile BYU’s big week continues as 2019 NCAA 10k champ Clayton Young takes the men’s title (with another BYU alum, Nico Montanez, in 4th).  Sara Hall with an insightful quote on running track workouts ahead of June's Olympic Trials (and why she thinks it will help her fall marathon too): "I miss marathon training. I would marathon grind all year long if I could. But doing that makes you slow."  @KarenRunsFar Early happenings: one runner came back to camp 40 minutes into the race because he forgot his bib; another started 58 minutes late. #BM100 #protips: if you want a quiet ride, get a #Jeep Compass. If you want to hear sounds, like a conch at 2:04 am, do not get yourself a Jeep Compass. They are sound proof. This was my first injury since I started Endurance Training in 1979. Then in late April of 2020, I ended up in the hospital for the first time in my life. The diagnosis was Congestive Heart Failure.   This Vlog / Podcast documents my Sixth Decade of Endurance Training. DOMS, DST and Badwater

DOMS, DST and Badwater

I can feel last week’s @vdot_o2 max week and the cold wet hike with @mandy.colleen and @adamsetser73 when doing my 500m repeats this morning.  Daylight savings time messes me up in the opposite way of most and congratulations to @marshall.ulrich on the first know winter BADWATER to Whitney crossing. @youhearthatmranderson on @youtube #congestiveheartfailure @ifit @strava @altrarunning @rei @target @newtonendurance  #DOMS #DST #Badwater Congratulations to Marshall Ulrich, age 69, who accomplished the first known WINTER Badwater (Death Valley) to Mt. Whitney run/climb, lowest to highest points in the lower 48 United States.  The attempt in “one go” was accomplished in 6 days, 3 hours, 42 minutes and raised money for fighting Alzheimer’s.  The Ultrarunning History Podcast recently told the stories of first runs across Death Valley in the early 1960s and the first Badwater to Mt. Whitney attempts in the 1970s in episodes 62 and 70. See: https://ultrarunninghistory.com/100-miler-9/   Ulrich’s first winter journey of about 144 miles was accomplished with a support crew and a companion on the climb. It took two days longer than planned due to a 20-hour break at Panamint Springs to treat a muscle issue, and the snowy Mount Whitney ascent up the Mountaineer’s Route with snowshoes, crampons, ropes, and ice axes was extended by a day. Ulrich reached the summit on Feb 27, 2021.  Delayed-onset muscle soreness (DOMS) is muscle pain that begins after you've worked out. It normally starts a day or two after a workout. You won't feel DOMS during a workout. Pain felt during or immediately after a workout is a different kind of muscle soreness. It's called acute muscle soreness.  Daylight saving time (DST), also daylight savings time or daylight time (the United States and Canada) and summer time (United Kingdom, European Union, and others), is the practice of advancing clocks during warmer months so that darkness falls at a later clock time. The typical implementation of DST is to set clocks forward by one hour in the spring ("spring forward") and set clocks back by one hour in autumn ("fall back", from the North American English word "fall" for autumn) to return to standard time. As a result, there is one 23-hour day in late winter or early spring and one 25-hour day in the autumn.  In March of 2020, I slipped on the illegally dumped cooking grease in front of John’s Burger and couldn’t walk for 6 weeks. This was my first injury since I started Endurance Training in 1979. Then in late April of 2020, I ended up in the hospital for the first time in my life. The diagnosis was Congestive Heart Failure. Barkley Marathons Hour 36 Update / March 19th, 2021

Barkley Marathons Hour 36 Update / March 19th, 2021

John Kelly @RndmForestRunnr A few #BM100 misperceptions I've noticed: 1. The race requires mental toughness, but you can't simply tough it out. Failure doesn't mean you weren't tough enough and being tough enough doesn't mean you'll be successful. (1/5)  2. Conditions matter, but they'll never be perfect at #BM100. Swings from frozen solid water jugs to scorching hot in 12 hours... that's just TN in March. I've had fierce storms from nowhere, fog from everywhere, and starts from 1:42 to 11:20 AM. (2/5)  If someone thinks a #BM100 finish requires good conditions, they've already failed. Bad conditions most affect those who had no chance to begin with. Energy must be focused on the things that are actually controllable. (3/5)  3. Yes, the #BM100 course gets tougher. So too does our gear, our training, and our collective experience. It's a delicate balancing act, to keep it just at that edge of possible & stretch us out fully across our spectrum of possibilities. (4/5)  Has it become too hard? That's been asked often in the last 30 years. And that's where the opportunity lies. Doing what couldn't be done carries far greater appeal than re-defeating something already conquered. #BM100 requires that motivation, as all great goals should. Barkley Marathons, Ethiopian Olympic Trails and Paul Chelimo / March 19th, 2021

Barkley Marathons, Ethiopian Olympic Trails and Paul Chelimo / March 19th, 2021

Final trial for Marathon squad of #TeamEthiopia @Tokyo2020 is planned to be satged in #Zurich on May 02, 2021, while the final trais from 800m - 10,000m to be held at @FBKGamesHengelo from June 06-07, 2021. Latest details on Ethiopian Olympic marathon trials. There had been some discussion that it would be a 30k or 40k, but the race distance will be a full marathon, I’m told.  @BStulberg Research shows 5 major factors or resilience: 1. Accepting reality even if it's hard. 2. Asking for help. 3. Being patient; knowing what feels like forever in the moment is not. 4. Narrative that you'll grow from struggle. 5. Routine—helps to activate and provides predictability.  The ability to show restraint is every bit as important as the ability to push forward.  Olympic silver medalist Paul Chelimo may not have got the American record he craved tonight, but he did extract a measure of revenge on training partner Emmanuel Bor in the Boost Treadmills 5,000, using a 27.32 last lap to outkick Bor and win in 13:09.90 to move to #9 on the all-time US indoor 5,000m list. Bor, who beat Chelimo two weeks ago on the same Virginia Beach Sports Center track at the FireFly Recovery 5,000, wound up second in 13:11.10, closing in 28.32 for his final 200.  “The Olympic Trials is coming up. Never count me out…I can do whatever I want, man…The race might start at the Olympic Trials, first lap I go 52 and we’re going to see what’s going to go down.” –  @Paulchelimo  @courtdauwalter Incredible effort team! The Barkley course won this round, but very well fought.  Media, to laz: You were a runner before? #BM100 FOLLOW ME ON TWITTER https://twitter.com/AndyNoise In March of 2020, I slipped on the illegally dumped cooking grease in front of John’s Burger and couldn’t walk for 6 weeks.
