436. Quarantine Backyard Ultra: A message from the Race Directors
Personal Peak· A message from the Race Directors: We understand the upset. Over the past three days, these phenomenal athletes captured our hearts while we watched them overcome the most mind blowing physical feats. And what this race deserved was a fairy tale ending wherein one athlete reached their absolute limit, while the other achieved a new record. Both overcoming obstacles and coming out the other side triumphantly. That would have been the perfect ending to the perfect event. However, as it is in life, not everything ends the way you would like it to and no one wanted it to end like this. After weeks of preparation and 62 sleepless hours, Radek, Mike, the organizing team, and the world needed that fairy tale ending. And we (Travis and Ashley) took it away. It was our decision alone, and we made the call. We fully believe it was the right call, but we also completely understand the disappointment and upset. Having never directed a race before, we were supremely naive and thus ill-prepared for that pivotal moment. As such, we did a terrible job of navigating it. The way we delivered the news to Radek was appalling. We robbed Michael of a proper celebration, and we put Lazarus and Sandra in a very awkward position. All while the world watched. And we regret it wholeheartedly. And although we make no apology for the official decision, we would like to apologize for how we handled it. To everyone who watched, participated, and helped us throughout this event, we are deeply sorry. For 62 hours we were a community together, rather than a world apart. The level of love and support during those hours was unlike anything we’ve ever experienced and when it all came to an end, we did not know how to navigate it. We fumbled. We failed. We let you all down, and for that we are deeply sorry. We have so much more to say about this event. The last few days have changed our lives in a very meaningful way, and we have so many people to thank. People who put in just as many sleepless hours with frantic productivity as we did. People we owe the world to. But this event has taught us many things, and we are committed to learning those lessons. Primary among them is not trying to celebrate someone’s win while you’re in the middle of regretting another’s loss. As such, we will save those thank yous until tomorrow when we can give them the spotlight they truly deserve. Thank you all

For More Endurance Noise & Random Musings! Brad Stulberg @BStulberg · Mar 14 I'm doing my best to provide evidence-based advice on movement right now. Key points: -Keep moving. Mind-body needs it -No gyms -Push-ups/squats/get-ups/kettlebell at home -Anything outdoors in uncrowded spaces -Do NOT go hard, lowers immunity -Do NOT cut carbs, lowers immunity hansonsrun @hansonsrun · Mar 13 As a lifetime runner with well over 100,000 miles run on the roads, I beg you to remember that automobiles are not looking for us.  We need to make sure that we are moving for them rather than expecting them to move for us. If neither of us move, we lose, every time. Run safe. Mario Fraioli @mariofraioli · Mar 12 Racing advice you can apply to the rest of your life (or vice versa): —Accept the situation. —Be aware of your surroundings. —Don’t freak out. —Control what you can control. —Respect the people around you. —Be adaptable. —Tell yourself that you’ll get through it. —Repeat. Jason Koop @jasonkoop · Mar 12 With races getting cancelled and postponed, it's important to remember the big picture. 1️⃣Don't panic 2️⃣You still have to WANT to do a replacement race, if you decide to do one 3️⃣process>outcome 4️⃣fitness does not evaporate hansonsrun @hansonsrun · Mar 10 Every Coach preaches the importance of sleep and how it can improve performance. Here is another advantage. When you are sleep deprived your immune system is at its weakest. This currently seems more important than ever. Jonathan J. Marcus @jmarpdx· Mar 10 Coaches — Remember, you must coach the person, not the sport. Some of your athletes need technique, some need tactics, some need discipline, and some need encouragement. To be a more effective coach for your athletes, you must spend time getting to know each as a person first. Steve Magness @stevemagness · Mar 11 With the Coronavirus, sports are moving towards playing games with no fans in the arena or stadiums. Don’t worry, track and field has been preparing for this for years. No fans. No problem. Business as usual...

411. Dropping Science: Naps
For More Endurance Noise & Random Musings! How to harness the power of the midafternoon nap Suspend your skepticism for a moment, and imagine a powerful new performance aid that boosts your physical power, improves your reaction time and decision-making, and protects you against oxidative stress and muscle damage. On the surface, the results were fairly straightforward: A night of short sleep hurt all the performance and health measurements, and an afternoon nap partly or fully restored them. That’s what you’d expect based on previous research – but there are some interesting new wrinkles, according to Anthony Blanchfield, a psychophysiologist at Bangor University in Britain, who has studied napping in athletes and was not involved in the Tunisian study. “The finding that napping in athletes can specifically attenuate some of the markers that are linked to oxidative damage and muscle damage is novel,” Over the past few decades, sleep researchers have accumulated evidence that getting less sleep than you need has effects throughout the body, pumping up stress hormones, suppressing immune function, and promoting systemic inflammation that raises the risk of cardiovascular disease and diabetes. But whether a brief afternoon nap is enough to reverse these negative effects remains unclear. One key aspect of the Tunisian study is that the naps came after a night of partial sleep deprivation. That might be applicable if, for example, you’ve had a restless night before a big competition, but it’s less clear that the nap would have similar benefits after a normal night of sleep. In a 2018 study led by Blanchfield and his colleague Sam Oliver, runners completed a pair of time-to-exhaustion tests on a treadmill, once with a 40-minute nap opportunity finishing 90 minutes beforehand, and once without. The overall results showed no performance benefit from napping. But a closer look found that the runners who improved with a nap had averaged 6.4 hours of sleep the night before, while those who saw no improvement had averaged 7.5 hours. “It seems likely that a nap is most effective when an athlete encounters some form of sleep disruption the night before exercise,” Blanchfield says, “or in those sports where early morning training is standard practice – for instance, swimming.” That’s why Charles Samuels, the head of the Centre for Sleep and Human Performance in Calgary, typically recommends limiting naps to between 15 and 30 minutes unless you’re trying to make up for an acute bout of missed sleep or travel fatigue. At a conference for Canadian Olympic team staff last fall, he suggested having a coffee before starting this kind of ultrabrief nap, to help kick-start your alertness when you wake up. And if the logistics of such a short nap seem daunting, Samuels had some reassuring words. “When I say nap, I mean lying down, eyes closed, deep breathing,” he said. “I couldn’t care less if you sleep. This is about brain rest.” https://www.theglobeandmail.com/life/health-and-fitness/article-how-to-harness-the-awesome-power-of-the-midafternoon-nap/

410. Don’t Train in Vain: Speed-work for a Multi Day Race?
For More Endurance Noise & Random Musings! Show Notes: Listener Question I've been very unsure about the role of "speed work" in my training or if there is any role for it when my slow training pace is already a touch above my targeted maximal race pace.  Perhaps you have some opinions and wisdom on this topic. First rule is to stay healthy and get to the start healthy. Boring makes you strong and speed kills. 400 miles in 6 days 66.6 / day. 18 pace is 20 hours Closer you get to race the more you should do race paced work. Further out you can do shorter / faster work. Speed is mainly for form purposes and to add some variety to your routine. Do some short races like 5ks and 10ks just to get out of your comfort zone sometimes. Speed kills your feet. So be sane on day one. Set a reasonable mileage goal / time goal for each day and have your breaks planned. Holder, Winkley and Fejes do this.

Peter Bromka @Bromka · 15h [Not about any 1 runner] If you're a pro runner who trains for months without updates, then competes in the Trials and either DNFs or finishes way back, then disappears without an update or press access, why should the fans care?
