17 - Arguing to Win Isn't Worth Losing Relationships

Society and schools are full of heated discussion and passionate arguments. While these moments can be healthy and engaging, they can also lead to ruined relationships and emotional trauma. A few recent moments made me reflect on ways that we could be more thoughtful in how we disagree with others, how we keep ourselves in check, and how we ensure others feel validated in their views. What an important lesson both for life and for our work kids! #DisciplineWin Learn more at andyjacks.com - Share your thoughts with me on social media @_AndyJacks. #disciplinewin

In this episode, I'm discussing school discipline with the autism guru Dr. Temple Grandin. This is real talk about how to help students with disabilities be successful in life, not just school. Topics include:

(1) Considering alternative consequences

(2) Understanding problems kids are going through and how others influence them

(3) How giving kids jobs can help achieve long term success in changing behaviors around

She is a prominent proponent for the humane treatment of livestock for slaughter and the author of more than 60 scientific papers on animal behavior. Grandin is one of the first individuals on the autism spectrum to document the insights she gained from her personal experience of autism. She is currently a faculty member with Animal Sciences in the College of Agricultural Sciences at Colorado State University.

In 2010, Time 100, an annual list of the 100 most influential people in the world, named her in the "Heroes" category.
