Sometimes it feels like, despite your best efforts,  the world is against you and that even though you are putting in soooo much work, you’re not getting anywhere. And so, the negativity sets in. Despite your best efforts to stay positive, you fall into the habit of thinking that maybe you just aren’t cut out for this. Maybe entrepreneurship isn’t for you. Maybe you should just go back to your 9-5.

And I do not want that for you.

And I know you don’t either.

So first, let’s recognize this for what it is. This is fear and frustration plain and simple. It sucks to feel like you’re burning yourself out all in the name of nothing. But we can fix this. Because as much as it feels SO difficult in the moment, there are a few simple tweaks that will help you begin to overcome it, and begin to shift what’s not working into what is. But we’ve got to start somewhere.

You know how when you first get into entrepreneurship it feels like everyone is always talking about how tired they are, and how much they’re working, and how they can’t fit it all into their day? And here you are, just starting your business, super excited for all the possibilities, and then all of a sudden…you start to feel like that. You feel overwhelmed. You feel endlessly busy. And everywhere you look, everyone else is constantly busy and complaining about being busy and yet never really getting any further in their business.

And you think, “this can’t be it, this can’t be what entrepreneurship is, I didn’t sign up for this.” And before long you’re buying into the whole “hustle mentality” and no matter what you try, you feel like you can’t catch a break. You feel the freedom you so desperately wanted slipping away and you start to feel stuck.

I have news for you—it does not have to be this way.

Listen, I will never tell you being an entrepreneur doesn’t require some hard work and sacrifice, especially in the beginning. It isn’t easy. You have to work at the things you want, get creative with planning, and break boundaries. But it should never burn you out. It should never make you feel worthless.

And the problem with this “always busy” culture we’ve created around entrepreneurship is we make our self worth tied to how busy we are (note: not how productive) and that is a recipe for disaster.

What I love so much about this interview with Pascale is that we break that myth that you have to hustle 24/7 and talk about how learning to relax and step back is actually incredibly beneficial to your business and personal growth. Mindset is a tricky thing. In fact, it’s one of the things that took me the longest to wrap my head around as an early-stage entrepreneur. Give me all the strategies, the tactile things I could do and I was on it. But when it came to mindset—that intangible thing, to be honest, I just wasn’t about it. It made me think of super woo-woo practices and nothing against that, but it wasn’t my thing. I felt silly saying affirmations or thinking a simple shift in the way I thought about things could really make a difference. To be totally blunt, I was living in a victim mindset, and victim-mindset me, was not interested in changing her frame of mind even if it meant more sales, more clients, more happiness. Because it was comfortable.

Looking back, I feel embarrassed saying that out loud. Because fast forward and 8k+ month me knows that mindset has played a HUGE role in my success and yet for years I stubbornly avoided that. Think of how much time I wasted. How much money was left on the table. And the really big one—how many lives I could have changed.

Except, I didn't.

I still remember how it felt the day I got laid off from my 9-5. I had just signed the lease on a new apartment and I was freaking out about paying rent.

I remember so vividly being escorted down the hall with my tiny box of belongings. I felt so numb. I don’t even remember driving home because as much as I was relieved to never go back to a job that made me feel empty inside, I was so worried about money that it was all I could focus on.

Little did I know that, as with so many of life's messiest starts, it would lead to the most beautiful journey.

I also never went back to an office or a 9-5 ever again.

Being laid off from that job, as scary as it was, it was the start and the push I needed to truly start the business I'd been dreaming of. But one thing I didn't love? Worrying about money. And that's why I created this episode.

Because sometimes there's an off season, sometimes you just need or want a little extra cash.

Whatever the reason, I've got you.

Real talk: community is at the center of everything that matters. Without it, I wouldn't have known how to start a business, find my passion, or even had the courage to ditch the 9-5 and travel the world. In fact, it was community that actually allowed me to go on a 5-month road trip. where I built my network and grew my business, all while getting to enjoy and explore cities across North America.

So when I say the community is not only the thing that brings me the greatest joy but the thing that's transformed my business, I mean it.  And today on the show, I chat with Kayty Helgerson of Gather Intentional Living, who shares her story of how community played a huge role in starting—and growing her business.

After living in Thailand. Kayty and her college sweetheart-turned husband, Colby came up with the idea to create Gather, a once-in person charcuterie and cake workshop-style event, turned Zoom sessions when the pandemic hit. Kayty talks about what sparked the idea for Gather, and how community shaped not only the launch of her business, but it's tremendous growth over the last 6 months, as well as how they pivoted with the COVID-19 pandemic, and how they're continuing to grow and meet new demands.

Any other introverts out there?! Believe it or not, I am an introvert to my core. So when I realized that talking to people was a pivotal part of starting a business, I was pretty freaked out.

I was the girl that would stand in the corner at events, hide in the bathroom to avoid talking to people, and give myself a headache to get out of going, that is how much I hated networking.

But now? It's one of my favorite things.
