#167 - Allison Riederer, MS, RD
Conversation 167:  The Story, Journey and Passion of Allison Riederer, MS, RD “The way our dietetics education system is set up, we get a lot of support as we are becoming dietitians and then it dissipates. You don’t become a dietitian by accident.  We fight so hard to become dietitians and I think sometimes people expect their career to be the victory lap and it’s just not the way it works.” Allison Riederer, MS, RD Today’s conversation is with Allison Riederer, a registered dietitian and founder of Root & Rise Academy who focuses on career resources and coaching for current and future registered dietitians.    Allison and I connected by being on the same cheerleading team for all registered dietitians. She has created a space to help registered dietitians navigate their careers in a positive and productive way. She almost quit the profession because she wasn’t happy with the job she was in. This lead to her working with a mentor and finding the path of teaching. She is a Dietetic Program Coordinator by day and helps other dietitians in these same circumstances by night.  Please enjoy my conversation with Allison. Connect with Allison by email and on her Root and Rise Academy website. www.anneelizabethrd.com Copyright © 2019 OPI & AEHC Song: One Of These Days Artist: The Gemini www.thegeminimusic.com Music used by permission. Conversation 166:  The Story, Journey and Passion of Jennifer McGurk, RDN, CEDRD-S “Part of my passion is having other professionals in my private practice who are going through their own eating disorder recovery and I love working with them. I love working with nutrition students, social workers, psychologists and other registered dietitians are sometimes my clients. It’s so great to be able to say to them - you are not broken.” Jennifer McGurk, RDN, CEDRD-S Today’s conversation is with Jennifer McGurk, a registered dietitian and entrepreneur who has a passion for supporting and educating other registered dietitians on business and intuitive eating.    Jennifer and I connected over a passion for podcasts. I noticed just recently she released her podcast called Pursuing Private Practice and I was so happy to see another dietitian in this awesome podcast space.  Jennifer is doing great things for the dietetics profession by teaching dietitians how to run a business based on her own experiences, challenges and successes. #165 - COVID Cocktails/Mocktails and Conversation with Carrie Moody, Nicole Rodriguez and Dave Sherotski
COVID Cocktails/Mocktails and Conversation with Carrie Moody, Nicole Rodriguez and Dave Sherotski I feel every great conversation is had over a meal or a cocktail (or mocktail if you choose). These conversations take on their own life and travel into unique directions, which is what truly matters. Periodically, I will be putting on my party pants, pouring myself something refreshing to drink and inviting my favorite guests just to  see where the words take us. In this episode of Cocktails, Mocktails and Conversations, I invited back my favorite threesome of Carrie Moody, Nicole Rodriguez and Dave Sherotski. It is a crazy time in the world right now with the COVID pandemic, so we just needed a cocktail to converse about what is going on, how to stay positive and what we are learning through this experience.  Cheers!   www.anneelizabethrd.com Copyright © 2019 OPI & AEHC Song: One Of These Days Artist: The Gemini www.thegeminimusic.com Music used by permission. #162 - Rita Saeed, MS, RDN
Conversation 162:  The Story, Journey and Passion of Rita Saeed, MS, RDN “I have been off the (social media) grid awhile now, because it became so exhausting, especially when it wasn’t fun anymore. I’m the type of person who really follows her heart and I really follow my passion and my intuition. If something doesn’t feel fun for me anymore and it feels more like a chore and I’m not getting joy out of it, I simply need to take a step back and re-evaluate what the purpose is.” Rita Saeed, MS, RDN Today’s conversation is with Rita Saeed,  a registered dietitian who works in the clinical area of dietetics but knows there is something more out there for her professionally.  Rita and I connected by social media because she was having a hard time with where she fit in as a registered dietitian. As she finished her internship and entered the career force, Rita felt she was losing her passion for the profession and questioning why she became a dietitian in the first place. Rita shares a personal side and talks about the parts of dietitian life we all experience. She also shares some great insight to working through all the changes of becoming a new dietitian.  Please enjoy my conversation with Rita.Connect with Rita by email and on Instagram. www.anneelizabethrd.com Copyright © 2019 OPI & AEHC Song: One Of These Days Artist: The Gemini www.thegeminimusic.com Music used by permission. #161 - Laura Koch, MS, RD, LMNT
Conversation 161:  The Story, Journey and Passion of Laura Koch, MS, RD, LMNT “One of the hardest things I was told when I started my job was our patients are not going to get better. They are either going to die or their are going to get a transplant. That was one thing that was a bit hard to come to grips with. I think for me, being able to help people maintain a good quality of life for the time they do have and managing this really difficult disease is really rewarding.” Laura Koch, MS, RD, LMNT Today’s conversation is with Laura Koch,  a registered dietitian who found dietetics as a second career and has discovered a passion for renal nutrition.    Laura and I connected this spring at the Nebraska Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics annual meeting and I am very glad she introduced herself. Her story starts out with going to college without a clear outline of what her passion was and working in an entirely different field of insurance. Along the way, she realized she had an interest in nutrition, pursued her degree and is now working for a dialysis clinic. Laura sheds some light on this area of nutrition and how she is finding it to be an area of dietetics to be rewarding.  Please enjoy my conversation with Laura. #160 - Alice Figueroa, MPH, RD, LD
Conversation 160:  The Story, Journey and Passion of Alice Figueroa, MPH, RD, LD “To be a really empowered dietitian and someone who works in the health industry, we all need to become aware of the issues going on in our community so we can become advocates. We do have a science background and we are the authority when it comes to food safety and nutrition. I think it’s really important for RD’s to become well-rounded and learn about the needs of our communities. ” Alice Figueroa, MPH, RD, LD Today’s conversation is with Alice Figueroa, a registered dietitian who created her own path into dietetics by combining her passion for public health, policy and nutrition.    Alice and I were connected through my previous podcast guest, Nicole Rodriguez because they did their internship together and I am so glad she did. Alice is one of those dietitians we all should get to know because of her deeply rooted passion for health advocacy both here in the United States and globally. She is from Guatemala and trips with her family early in her life, opened her eyes to many faults in basic human rights like food and clean water. Alice shares many of her experiences so far, insights on how policy affects all dietitians and the current project she is working on going back to her family's roots. Conversation 158:  The Story, Journey and Passion of Moe Schlachter MS, RD, LD, CDE “The beauty of our profession is sometimes we’re talking about really serious illnesses and diseases and the mood in the room can be a little grim - but sometimes we get to connect with our clients and back to memories of their mom, their grandma and their family meals and dinners to visit a time in the past,  which is really special. It sets our profession apart.” Moe Schlachter MS, RD, LD, CDE Today’s conversation is with Moe Schlachter, a registered dietitian who started off in the business world, went to culinary school and became a chef and is now running his own nutrition private practice.  I am not on Linkedin very much but there was one day when I was and came across Moe. We all know there are not many male dietitians in our profession, so I am always intrigued when I come across one and one who has his own business. Moe is an amazing human doing amazing things currently and throughout his lifetime so far. His story is very unique as he started in the business world, went to Israel for culinary school, being a Chef in New York City,  and then a few years later going back to school for dietetics after a conversation and encouragement from a friend. Conversation 156:  The Story, Journey and Passion (so far) of RD2Be, Liz Davitt “I can definitely tell a mindset difference between my undergraduate classes to my graduate classes (while taking them at the same time).  Graduate classes, I feel people are truly there to learn and grades are kind of out of the window. With undergraduate classes, people still care about grades a lot, that’s great but sometimes the learning can get lost ” Liz Davitt, RD2Be Today’s conversation is with Liz Davitt, a dietetic student at Iowa State getting her Masters in Dietetics and Exercise Science and we also work together. I have had the joy of working with Liz for almost 2 years. In May of 2020, she will graduate with her Masters in Dietetics and Exercise Science. #155 - Transitioning from Vegetarian, A Registered Dietitian Perspective with Carrie Moody, RDN
Conversation 155:  Transitioning from Vegetarian, A Registered Dietitian Perspective with Carrie Moody, RDN With a new documentary out and the many discussions I have had with clients and other registered dietitians about following a plant based diet, I wanted to talk a little bit more about someone who has navigated this type of lifestyle. There is so much nutrition noise when it comes to food, especially when it comes to food from animals. In today’s conversation, I talk with Carrie Moody, a registered dietitian who was a vegetarian for a long time and we discuss why she became a vegetarian, how she navigated this eating lifestyle and why she circled back to eating animal based foods. All the things she has lived and learned along the way has lead her in developing her Metabolism Reset Program. A program designed to decrease the nutrition noise, focus on your health and eating real food, from all the food groups.  Please enjoy my conversation with Carrie. Conversation 154:  The Story, Journey and Passion of Elise Compston, RDN “I knew I wanted to see myself in managerial positions and I wanted to see my career take off and keep going onto the next thing and for me, I had to swallow my pride and ask why that is so important?  Why is that the thing holding me back? I had to look at my priorities and what is actually important to me is not going to be the title and the money, it is the human relationships and family. ” Elise Compston, RDN Today’s conversation is with Elise Compston, a registered dietitian who has a passion for recipe development, cooking really easy and delicious food and her beautiful family.  I have spent endless days drooling over Elise’s food on Instagram, like all her amazing nut butter creations, oatmeal bowls and sauces which all make sense after our great conversation. Elise has had a passion for recipe development early in her dietitian career and has made this passion her full-time gig along with raising two tiny humans. You will not find a more down-to-earth person who cooks from her heart and with a lot of love. I started to recognize these people weren’t like that because they chose it, they were like this because they were injured while serving, they had been deployed and were going through stress being separated from their families, or were experiencing PTSD after war and battling these scars inside of them while turning to food for comfort because of the sacrifices they made.” Brittani DaSilva, MS, RD Today’s conversation is with Brittani DaSilva, a registered dietitian, nutrition coach and US Army Veteran  who wants to end the war with diets and food guilt.  Brittani and I connected after she messaged me on about being from Iowa. Conversation 127:  The Story, Journey and Passion - so far - of Deanne Lynch, RD2Be “I knew when I went to culinary school, it wasn’t the end-all for me. I loved food so much and I wanted to learn as much as I could about it.”  Deanne, RD2Be Today’s conversation is with Deanne Lynch, a RD2Be who chose dietetics as her 3rd career will be starting her dietetic internship in a couple weeks. Deanne and I connected after the Michigan Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Spring Conference by  sending me a lovely email about her passion for dietetics and I knew I wanted to learn more about her journey. Not only is this a 3rd career for Deanne, she is also a spouse and a mother to 2 children. Ep 113 - Aimee Sarchet, RDN
Conversation 113:  The Story, Journey and Passion of Aimee Sarchet, RDN “There are more conversations that come up and I see more conferences offering sessions on video. It is usually the basics and discussion afterwards (by dietitians) includes saying they are scared and don’t know where to start. It makes sense, it’s something we’re not trained in and is outside of our wheelhouse but I think video is really important because it is the way social media is headed.” Aimee Sarchet, RDN. Today’s conversation is with Aimee Sarchet, a registered dietitian and entrepreneur with a passion for photography and videography. Aimee found a passion for nutrition at a young age and pursued dietetics the first day of her college career. She knew almost right away after completing her internship, she wanted to be an entrepreneur and start her own business with a personal connection to individuals struggling with GI issues. Conversation 112:  The Story, Journey and Passion of Zach Cordell, RDN “Teaching gives me the opportunity to talk to somebody 2 times a week for 4 months and really give them a basis in nutrition rather than trying to chase after them every couple of weeks to make sure they are coming back. I love being able to be with these students at a place where they’re leaving their home, making their own food choices and getting ready to decide who they are going to be in terms of health.” Zach Cordell, RDN. Today’s conversation is with Zach Cordell, a registered dietitian, professor, podcast host of The Latter-Day Saint Nutritionist and a brand new author. There are dietitians who are passionate about nutrition and then there is Zach Cordell. This conversation with Zach was very special because he is very special. Conversation 104:  The Story, Journey and Passion of Tonya Huenink, RD, LD “While I was working in different settings, so many people said “I will eat what you tell me to.” I realized I am passionate about families eating together and I do think I have the knowledge and the resources to help people with this.” - Tonya Huenink, RD, LD Today’s conversation is with Tonya Huenink, a registered dietitian who has worked in all areas of dietetics and has started her own meal planning business called Meal Squeeze. Tonya is native to my favorite state of Iowa and at one point worked for the same company as I did. Throughout her adventures as a Registered Dietitian, she has worked in many different areas of dietetics including clinical, outpatient, food service and school nutrition. Tonya has developed a passion over the years for equipping families of all sizes to sit down for a balanced meal together which has lead to her creating her own business. Not only is this meal planning service great for families but it is also great for other registered dietitians to use with their own clients. Tonya shares some great insight of how she created her business, marketing and a few business tools she has discovered along the way.
