Episode 14: HOWLS From The Dark Ages, with Solomon Forse and P.L. McMillan

In this episode I'm joined by Solomon Forse and P.L. McMillan to discuss the HOWL Society and their new anthology, HOWLS From The Dark Ages.

---

Solomon Forse is the founder of HOWL Society, the most active online horror book club in the Western world. After serving in Alaska with the US Army and completing a deployment to Iraq, Solomon moved back to his home state of Colorado to attain a master’s degree in education. He now lives among the lakes and forests of the Rocky Mountains where he teaches literature and writes fiction. If Solomon isn’t reading, watching, or writing horror, you’ll find him role-playing horror with tabletop RPGs like Call of Cthulhu—or shredding horror on the guitar in his Lovecraftian metal band Crafteon. Follow him on Twitter @SolomonForse.

P.L. McMillan is a Canadian expat living in the States, after having taught English for three years in Asia. She is a victim of a deep infatuation with the works of Shirley Jackson, Stephen King, and H.P. Lovecraft.

To her, every shadow is an entry way to a deeper look into the black heart of the world and every night she rides with the mocking and friendly ghouls on the night-wind, bringing back dark stories to share with those brave enough to read them. Follow her on Twitter @AuthorPLM

---

HOWL Society Press presents the first-ever anthology of medieval horror! Howls from the Dark Ages contains 18 thrilling tales of cursed castles, wild woodlands, haunted hamlets, and mysterious monasteries, with an introduction by Christopher Buelhman, the author who started it all with his novel Between Two Fires.

Available in eBook, paperback, and a limited edition hardcover, Howls from the Dark Ages contains member-created artwork along with tales from both HOWL Society members as well as renowned authors in the horror industry.

---

HOWL Society, located on Discord, is the most active horror book club on the web. With hundreds of members, the club offers readers the chance to join a supportive community where they can enjoy books alongside other horror-lovers while engaging in meaningful discussions and forming long-lasting friendships. Aside from serving as an organized platform for discussing books, HOWL Society is also home to a tight-knit group of horror writers. Additionally, members can participate in tangential conversations about horror films, horror games, and much more. Because the club aims to provide equal access to all readers and writers around the world, membership is 100% free.

Episode 9: Modern Pulp with Martin Shannon

Episode 9: Modern Pulp with Martin Shannon

In this craft-heavy episode, Martin and I discuss writing without outlining, serial fiction, writing for the TikTok generation, and hamburger metaphors.

Martin (“Marty”) Shannon is a multi-million word author of thrilling horror and speculative fiction. He’s a dedicated husband, and a father to one scary smart teenager. Through it all, he remains a diehard fan of horror, fantasy, science fiction, and a lover of all things creepy.

Marty does his best writing in the pre-dawn hours, when it’s just him and Jack, his golden retriever whose intestinal clock plays an important role in just why Marty’s up at that hour.

Marty loves to write fast-paced, fantastical fiction, stories that make you want to stay up far too late to find out the answer to that most compelling of questions: “And then what happened?”

You can find Marty on social media (Twitter @talesofweirdfl, Instagram @talesofweirdfl) as well as hanging out on his back porch, banjo in one hand, and word processor in the other.

Together with the giant one-eyed cat made of shadows, she publishes all things dark and lovely. When she’s not editing, she writes. Her work has been published or is forthcoming in Hexagon SF Magazine, In Somnio: A Collection of Modern Gothic Horror (Tenebrous Press), Spirit Machine (Air and Nothingness Press), Ghostlore (Alternative Stories Podcast) and others. She keeps a catalogue of her weird little wordcreatures on www.eloucarroll.com and spends far too much time on twitter at @keychild.

Episode 4: Interview with Chris Spalton

Episode 4: Interview with Chris Spalton

This week I'm speaking to Chris Spalton, author of 'Apparitions of East Anglia' as well as 'The Eelman Chronicles'.

We touch on subjects such as the inherent Lovecraftian nature of the East of England, necromantic trousers, and of course, the folklore we grew up with as fen folk.

Chris Spalton is a multi-discplinary creative currently living in Norfolk after growing up in the fens, where he absorbed an interest in the weird and spooky from immersing himself in the land.

Having started his self publishing journey with his true story graphic novel 'The Eelman Chronicles', his latest book 'Apparitions of East Anglia' delves into folklore, and weird history from this oft neglected region.  Shortlisted for the East Anglia Book of the year 2021, he has strived with this project to continue the tradition of passing folktales down through the generations but with a focus on making the content accessible and engaging for both the casual browser and folklore fan alike.

Aside from his books, Chris is also a music video creator, cartoon artist, UX designer and conference speaker, alongside being a  huge underground music fan, with all of his interests combining to produce all sorts of creative outputs.
