Sucharita Tyagi has been at the forefront of film criticism, notably embracing the YouTube medium for reviews as early as 2015. Back then, she was reviewing films on YouTube for the Film Companion website. This segment evolved into "Not a Movie Review" with Sucharita. A curated selection of episodes from "Not a Movie Review" was subsequently released as a web series on Disney+ Hotstar under the same title in March 2020.

In this episode, we're getting into what makes a movie 'woke'—is it a new trend, or has good cinema always been woke? We also explore the movie critique scene in India, talking about the hurdles critics face, and of course, shooting the breeze about films from Archies to Animal. Plus, we're spilling the tea on some cool independent flicks that released recently. Don't miss the fun and insightful discussion!

Anoop Kumar's Bold Journey to Fix Our Broken Education System

Anoop Kumar's Bold Journey to Fix Our Broken Education System

Anoop Kumar founded the Nalanda Academy in 2013 in Wardha, Maharashtra. He is pioneering groundbreaking work by providing education to marginalized students from all over the country and has successfully helped hundreds of students from marginalized castes gain admission to top universities in India and abroad.

His life, journey, and ideas are nothing short of revolutionary, and I won't be exaggerating if I say that he is one of the living legends who has done unparalleled work.

This is the podcast where he skillfully deconstructs the myth of merit, which may significantly alter your perspectives on the current education system.

Please be aware that this podcast contains some details that might be triggering for some people, as it touches upon topics such as suicides and extreme caste traumas.

Anti-Caste Bills in USA

Anti-Caste Bills in USA

An episode about anti-caste laws being passed in the USA.  This episode was recorded a few months back.

Kshama Sawant, an Indian-American politician and economist, has served on the Seattle City Council since 2014. She is a member of Socialist Alternative, the first and only member of the party to date to be elected to public office.

In 2012, Kshama ran as a Socialist Alternative candidate for the Washington State Legislature and surprised everyone by winning 29% of the vote. The momentum continued in her campaign for the Seattle City Council, where she boldly ran on a platform of fighting for a $15/hr minimum wage, rent control, and taxing the super-rich to fund mass transit and education. In November, she defeated a 16-year incumbent Democrat to become the first socialist elected in a major US city in decades.

The Seattle City Council's law against discrimination based on caste—the first such law passed by a city in the United States—was written and forwarded by Councilwoman Kshama Sawant, the only Indian American member of the council.

Prashant Nema is a software engineer who has lived in Seattle for 22 years and worked for Microsoft, Dell, and Meta (Facebook). He was part of the Seattle team (CSIA) that organized, advocated for, and supported the Seattle ordinance against caste discrimination passed in February 2023. He is also a member of the Bay Area, California-based Ambedkar King Study Circle.

You can find his article written in the local Seattle media during the Seattle Campaign here:

India's Underground Hip-Hop & Bass Scene

India's Underground Hip-Hop & Bass Scene

In this podcast, we discussed the vibrant independent Indian rap and hip-hop scene. On creating art in the age of commerce and dealing with unethical recording labels.  The power of music to challenge societal norms at the same time being playful and super interesting in its approach. And finally the impact of the film "Gully Boy" on the rap and hip-hop movement.

Tushar Adhav aka BamBoy is a music producer/Dj and rapper. He is known for his brand of murky bass often intertwined with groove-addled samples and music from his roots. BamBoy is also an Emcee who never fails to deliver hard-hitting truth bombs in his verses.  He is also a key member of the HipHop Collective 'Swadesi.’

Under the pseudonym "Kaali Duniya," Tushar Adhav creates music that takes on a different persona. Through Kaali Duniya, he crafts sound-system-influenced tracks characterized by dark soundscapes, a haunting atmosphere, and brain-tingling basslines. Notably, he curates samples deeply rooted in cultural and social contexts, adding another layer of significance to his work.

What sets his art apart is his ability to produce socially and politically charged tunes intended for the dance floor. His music has the power to move your body and stimulate your thoughts simultaneously.

Battles for Equality in Hindu India by Manoj Mitta

Battles for Equality in Hindu India by Manoj Mitta

I recorded a podcast with Manoj Mitta, author of the new book:  Caste Pride: Battles for Equality in Hindu India.

In this podcast episode, we delve into the fascinating history of caste and social reforms in India. From detailing the strange laws during colonial times to the interesting courtroom debates and the lesser-known heroes, the narrative uncovers a compelling and lesser-explored aspect of our past. We discuss the barbaric punishment imposed on Lower Castes in Madras in 1816, known as "Confinement in the stocks," and the disturbing practice of "The Breast Tax."

Exploring the root cause of the scarcity of intercaste marriages, we learn about Watandar Joshis, Satyasodhak Samaj, and Self-respect marriages by Periyar, as they shaped the legal concepts of marriages in India.

We also uncover the many unsung figures from history who lead historic battles against untouchability.  Manoj also delves into Mahatma Gandhi's stance during this fight for untouchability and addresses whether caste finds sanction in ancient scriptures, exploring the root cause of this problem as described in religious books. This episode takes listeners through the context of that era, the struggle for equality, and how reforms in Indian society began through both legal and social means.

About Manoj:

Manoj Mitta is a Delhi-based journalist focusing on law, human rights and social justice. A law graduate from Hyderabad, he has worked with the Times of India, the Indian Express and India Today. Mitta has written two critically acclaimed books on impunity for mass violence: When a Tree Shook Delhi: The 1984 Carnage and Its Aftermath, co-authored with H.S. Phoolka (2007), and The Fiction of Fact-finding: Modi and Godhra (2014).

From Superstition to Rationality: The Story of a Rebel in the Mountains.

From Superstition to Rationality: The Story of a Rebel in the Mountains.

In this episode, I meet Ajay, a middle-aged man from Himachal Pradesh whose life was shaped by his family's religious and superstitious upbringing. However, everything changed when he discovered Navayana Buddhism, a modern movement rooted in social justice and equality.

As he delved into the teachings of Dr Ambedkar he began questioning the rituals he had ignorantly followed, finding solace and resonance in the principles of Navayana Buddhism. The episode dives into the multifaceted aspects of Ajay's conversion, exploring the social, political, and psychological aspects of his decision.

#65 Greeshma Explains Complex Cultural Wars in Karnataka.

In our latest episode, Greeshma discusses the surprising defeat of the BJP by the Congress in the Karnataka elections.  This episode aims to explore the cultural realities of Karnataka, going beyond the usual analyses of voter demographics and factors favoring one party over the other. Our guest, Greeshma, will shed light on why the BJP and RSS lost the election but still maintain influence in the cultural landscape. We delve into the historical context and the power of the Sangh ideology within Karnataka, which even impacts the functioning of Congress. This thought-provoking podcast goes beyond surface-level discussions of electoral victories and losses, examining the intricate dynamics shaping the cultural war in the state. Join us for a stimulating conversation that uncovers unique perspectives and insights, broadening our understanding of Karnataka's cultural fabric.

Greeshma Kuthar practised law before transitioning to a career in media. She served as the head of the social media team at Firstpost. During her time there, she authored an 18-part series on the rise of Hindu nationalism in southern Coastal Karnataka and wrote investigative reports on emerging RSS leaders, including Pragya Singh Thakur. Following her tenure at Firstpost, she has been engaged in research and writing about how RSS propagates Cultural Nationalism across southern India. Her most recent work is the cover story for The Caravan titled "All Santhosh’s Men: The BJP’s re-engineering of Karnataka." I highly recommend reading the article, and the link is provided in the description.

#59 Legacy of Saheb Kanshi Ram by Sagar

#59 Legacy of Saheb Kanshi Ram by Sagar

Sagar is a writer and journalist currently working with The Caravan. In this episode he discuss in detail about the ideas, legacy and pragmatism of Saheb Kanshi Ram. Kanshi Ram is one of the biggest name in the Dalit movement in India’s political landscape. He launched the Bahujan Samaj Party in 1984, which went on to form the government in India’s largest state, Uttar Pradesh on four occasions.

To call Manyavar Kanshi Ram, only a politician would be very much of an understatement. He was a disruptor who dislocated the Indian political landscape and gave power to one of the most oppressed people in this country.

Sagar discusses not only about the times when Bahujan politics was at its peak but also these bleak times when the entire foundation on which Kanshiram laid his ideas are on shaky grounds. What has worked, what has changed, and what can we learn from the past to understand our present better, we discuss it all in this episode.

#57 with Prof. Brahma Prakash on Cultural Appropriation

#57 with Prof. Brahma Prakash on Cultural Appropriation

Here, we talk about the meaning of labour in art and who controls the power to define the ‘pure’ culture. The reasons for marginalization of folk performances in India. How the idea of taste in art is shaped by the role of caste and class.

Prof. Brahma Prakash is an Assistant Professor of Theatre and Performance Studies at the School of Arts and Aesthetics, Jawaharlal Nehru University, India. He is the author of the book Cultural Labour (OUP, 2019). His research interest lies in regional cultural performance traditions from northern India with a special focus on the question of aesthetics, marginality and cultural justice.

Topics discussed in this episode:

1 What is the meaning of the often misunderstood term Aesthetics?

2. What is the meaning of 'taste' that defines good and bad art? How does the position of caste and class in this concept of 'taste?

3. What is the meaning of cultural labour?

4. Has the form traditionally belonged to Dalits and was considered 'low art', but then Upper Caste appropriated it and made it 'high art'?

5. How folk art is used as a device to play a transformative and revolutionary role in society.

6. Connections between art, leisure and creative boredom. Can working-class people who don't have the luxury of free time produce high-quality artwork?

7. What is the cultural capital of art in an age when socio-political realities have changed? In the times of social media, people from marginalised communities have used social media platforms such as TikTok and insta reels to express themselves and find a vast audience.

8. The sad reality of Brahmanical appropriation of all local festivals, customs and diety.

#56 Story of RSS by Bhanwar Meghwanshi

At the tender age of 13, Bhanwar Meghwanshi started attending the Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh's shakhas in Rajasthan without any idea about the organization. Meghwanshi began to take immense pride in his Hindu identity and wished to dedicate his life to RSS's ideology. But one incident shook him immensely, and his entire life changed afterward.

Meghwanshi is now a journalist and an activist. His book Main Ek Karsevak Tha—I Was a Karsevak—was first published in Hindi in 2019, and its English translation, I Could Not Be Hindu: The Story of a Dalit in the RSS, was published by Navayana in January this year.

In this podcast, he decodes the mystery surrounding one of the most powerful organisations in India.
