APA Scope, Diversity & Inclusion in the Photo Community, Episode 011

Focus: A conversation with photographer representative, Jigisha  Bouverat discussing representation and diversity in the photo industry.

Hosted by the APA Diversity Committee, Martine Severin | Edwin Vargas
https://apanational.org/

Jigisha Bouverat, owner of Bouverat Collective, brings a distinct level of experience and perspective from many sides of the industry. Before she became an agent, she was the Director of Art Production at TBWA\Chiat\Day. During her 18+ years at the agency, she managed and mentored teams of Art Producers responsible for revolutionizing the creative and business practices in the industry. Jigisha worked with a diverse roster of emerging and established creators to produce some of the most memorable and celebrated advertising campaigns.

Bouverat Collective emerged from a belief Jigisha developed over the course of her career -- that representing globally diverse artists was important and necessary. To Jigisha, representation is more than a business relationship. It's a personal commitment and partnership that nurtures the development of each artist's creativity and culture.

Jigisha is also the co-founder of KOMYOON. A service committed to connecting art and commerce professionals.

Hosts Liam Clickenger, Edwin Vargas, and Gonzalo Guzman welcome APA DC's first LGBTQIAP+ photography grant recipient Daniel Aros-Aguilar. A panel of distinguished judges selected Daniel from more than 114 applications representing 22 countries. He is a gender non-conforming photographer born in Colombia who now resides in Harlem, N.Y. His grant submission “Sandunga Nunca Muere” ("Her Beauty Never Dies”) is an ongoing photography project that establishes contemporary documentation of pre-Christianized queer history and redefinition of morality in the Latin American culture.

APA Scope presents hosts Laura Chase de Formigny & Inti St. Clair with guest photographer Robb Scharetg: "My name is Robb and my voice is f$96^ed up."

"I’ve had a voice disorder (vocal dystonia) since 2001, it can make creative calls a challenge, and ordering in loud restaurants . . . ‘interesting’. But I’ve also found it to be a vital tool - NOT a handicap, as it forces my subjects - CEOs, politicians, athletes, celebrities and regular people to ALL slow down and listen. As a result, my images show a true connection between me and those in front of my lens. As much of a pain in the ass as it can be, I’ve found it to be a powerful tool." Rob Scharetg

Martine Séverin, Chair of APA's Diversity Committee welcomes Séan Alonzo Harris to discuss his street photography series titled, The Space Between.

The Space Between is a proclamation of radical inclusivity, an invitation to see differently and transform our images and perceptions of others. The photographic document serves to engage the critical issues of race and representation and to make visible the varied, full humanity and expansive beauty of black and brown people.

The images can be seen on his website https://www.seanalonzoharris.com/ and SCOPE webinar can be viewed on APA’s Youtube channel.
