A Pint With Friends

By Scott Smith

I am Scott Smith. This is basically just me talking about craft beer and hopefully other funny stuff, at times I’ll be interviewing craft beer nerds, musicians, artists, professionals, business owners & friends and other like-minded individuals that will share craft beer stories and experiences from their own craft….meaning love of what they do, not crafting projects…not that I won’t talk to that kind of crafters too.

VIB Pod Pack is Back

VIB Pod Pack is Back

Vancouver Island Brewing has announced the release of a new collaborative sampler pack to raise funds for the preservation of wild B.C. salmon stocks, a vital food source for the Southern Resident Killer Whales that live in the Salish Sea. Pod Pack 2021 – which follows a similar release in 2019 – features four beers created in collaboration with other island breweries, each of them named after one of the whales in the local pods studied by marine biologists. The beers and participating breweries include: Mike Rosé Pale Ale (5.2% abv) – Whistle Buoy Brewing, Victoria Solstice Plum & Rosemary Saison (4.2% abv) – Ace Brewing, Courtenay Tahlequah Pacific Gose (4.8% abv) – Mayne Island Brewing, Mayne Island Wave Walker Helles Bock (6.8% abv) – Ucluelet Brewing, Ucluelet https://www.psf.ca/support/donate-online Details of the 2021 Pod Pack compiled by Joe Wiebe - https://bcaletrail.ca/vancouver-island-brewing-pod-pack/ Mike Rosé Pale Ale (5.2% ABV) BREWED WITH WHISTLE BUOY BREWING – VICTORIA, BC The namesake of scientist Dr. Michael Bigg, who was known as “the father of killer whale research,” Mike (J-26) is a 30-year old male member of the J-Pod who has two living siblings, Alki (J-36) and Echo (J-42), and one younger sibling who passed away before the age of four, Scarlet (J-50). Then, in September 2020, she made headlines again for successfully giving birth to a healthy calf, Phoenix (J-57). She is 24 years old. Wave Walker Helles Bock (6.8% ABV) BREWED WITH UCLUELET BREWING – UCLUELET, BC Wave Walker (L-88) got his name because when he was first spotted riding the wave from his mother’s slipstream. SNOOTCHIE BREWTCHES! We tried Smodcast ‘Have a Week’ & The Jay & Silent Bob ‘Beers! Beers! Beers!

In this episode we try Smodcast ‘Have a Week’ Juicy Pale Ale and the Jay & Silent Bob ‘Beers! Beers! Beers! Both beers made in Vancouver by Main Street Brewing.  Named after the eponymous weekly podcast that features Kevin and his long-time producing partner Scott Mosier aka @samosier — who met right here in Vancouver while both were attending film school back in the day — the ‘Have a Week’ Juicy Pale Ale has a balanced profile that complements the papaya and citrus notes of the highlighted Mosaic hops and punches in at 5.5% ABV / 30 IBUs.  The Jay & Silent Bob ‘Beers! Beers! Beers!’ Lager celebrates the dynamic cinematic duo (and Silent Bob’s longtime — ahem — Mewes) in a perfectly crisp, clean and easy drinking 4.5% ABV lager for all occasions. Or, y’know, hanging out in front of the neighbourhood Quick Stop. It’s inspired by Jay’s rap from the iconic Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back entry in the View Askewniverse. What we Drank
33 Acres Brewing Wolf Landbier

Wolf Landbier

4.8% ABV

Rustic, Crisp, Dope

Ale

Landbier means “country beer”, a term Franconian breweries use for a lager that is unique to its location. While no two landbiers are the same, ours uses the 33 Brewing Experiment lager yeast, is conditioned in Foeder 1 and dryhopped with Slovenian Wolf.

Episode 24: Dichotomy, Origins & This is Hefeweizen

In this episode we drink Dichotomy from Category 12, This is Hefeweizen from Moon Under Water & Origins from Crooked Stave

Category 12 - Dichotomy
2019 Barrelholder Release

5.4% ABV

Harnessing the best of disparate worlds, this meticulously blended beer creates a haven of flavour between an old world, foeder aged Belgian-style Single, and a bright tartness that brings it to life.

Foeder-Aged for 5 months, we blended our inaugural foeder release with a barrel aged sour to produce a delicate dance of nuanced flavour: the genesis of our foeder ageing program has begun!

Moon Under Water - This Is Hefeweizen

Notes of bubblegum, banana, and clove. A multiple award winner at the BC and Canadian Brewing Awards

Crooked Stave - Origins
Burgundy Sour Ale Aged in Oak Barrels

Origins is our homage to the history of barrel aging and those who have influenced us along the way. Traditionally regarded as the most complex of beers, Flemish Reds and Oud Bruins from the Flanders region of Belgium were known for their tart and vinous characteristics; these attributes eventually gave rise to their designation as the “Burgundies of Belgium.” Before we carefully select each blend from our barrel cellar, our burgundy sour gracefully ages in large oak foeders, and finally, smaller wine casks. Origins’ dominant characteristics come from the use of aromatic malts to create dark vinous notes with an acidic tart cherry finish, derived from our mixed culture of wild yeast and bacteria.

Episode 00: Introducing A Pint With Friends

Episode 00: Introducing A Pint With Friends

Hello my name is Scott Smith and welcome to A Pint With Friends. In this podcast I share conversations I’ve had with craft beer nerds, musicians, artists, professionals, business owners & friends and other like-minded individuals that will share craft beer stories and experiences from their own craft.

In my conversation with Dan Colyer Brewmaster & co-owner of Fuggles & Warlock Craftworks, he tells me how they embrace their deep roots in geekdom which is the foundation of their amazing beer.

While a conversation with Steel & Oak’s Co-Owner Jordan Foss showed his passion for making great beer is only equaled by his commitment to his local community.

The goal of this podcast is not only my journey into learning more about the craft beer scene here in Vancouver Canada, but also connect with people, meet new friends and share positive stories meant to inspire and motivate you to follow your passions.

One time I also hosted a Beer tasting with my nieces, a Root Beer tasting.  It was only then that I realized that sugar might be the most powerful drug on the planet.

Come along with me on this podcast and hopefully try out new things and have a few laughs and inspire you to Share A Pint With Friends.

Episode 16: A Pint With Steamworks

This was a big week in the Smith house; I landed a new job, and I received an invite from Steamworks Brewing to try a new beer they are launching, the Tropical Tart Ale. I sat down with Steamworks Marketing Manager Justin Van Mulligen to chat about the steps involved in bringing a new beer to the market. How the twenty-one-year-old Vancouver brewery still views itself as a startup by creating unique beers and staying ahead of the trends. And how much of a roll Gastown has played a part in their branding and beers.

Head over to the Steamworks taproom in Burnaby to fill your growler with the Tropical Tart Ale.

In this episode Wrey, Shannon & Josh in the background flow in and out of beer and board games, specifically
Star Wars X-Wing from Fantasy Flight Games and the 3 Hobbit-themed beers from Central City Brewing.

The Smaug Stout: Smaug Stout (9.5% alc./vol) is styled after a classic Russian Imperial Stout, but with a subtle hint of Habanero chilies to remind you of the fire and danger awaiting Bilbo and to the Company of Dwarves in their journey to The Lonely Mountain. Pronounced notes of coffee and chocolate balanced with Northwest Hops and a touch of heat produce an exceptional imperial stout, a worthy reward for your hard-fought journey.
The Gollum Precious Pils: With flavors as smooth and crafty as Gollum himself, the Gollum Pilsner (5% alc./vol) is brewed in the classic Bavarian tradition, using only the finest two-row barley, and hops from the Hallertau region of Germany. This light and golden Pilsner has a distinct hop aroma and flavour, with a dry, crisp finish.Like the One Ring which Gollum has spent his life pursuing, the “precious” pils, if your quest leads you to it, may not extend your life, but it may make your journey a little more enjoyable!
The Bolg Belgian Tripel: An Orc chieftain who ruled for 150 years, Bolg seems like the kind who would drink his grog of choice and no one would tell him otherwise; however, this flavorful strong BelgianTripel(8% alc./vol) may be too refined for this otherwise gruesome character.
