Apple for the Teacher

On November 30th, 2021, just over two years ago, a 15-year-old boy entered his high school with a gun, and went on a shooting spree which killed 4 students and injured many others. He was apprehended at the scene and his trial was recently completed. He was tried as an adult and received life in prison without parole.

But this case is far from over, as his parents were also arrested and charged with 4 counts of involuntary manslaughter for each of the students killed. They went on to have separate trials and those trials have now been completed. I watched both trials which were broadcast on YouTube, and so this episode will present the details of the trials from hours and hours of courtroom footage.

Back in 1991, the rock band Pearl Jam released a song called "Jeremy" based on the life of a high school boy, a song which propelled the fledgling band to stardom. This is Jeremy’s story.

Today’s episode will provide an update to the story which was covered in Episode 158 - "Shoot to Kill". But first you will first hear a replay of that episode, followed by the details of a trial which was recently completed. A man by the name of Samuel Paty was a secondary teacher at a school in France. At the end of a school day, he began his walk home, but was ambushed by a man who stabbed him to death and then beheaded him.

A high school student made plans to commit a mass shooting at his school. What happened?

The schoolgirl met up with her teacher for a game of basketball. She was found 30 hours later in a remote wooded area, left for dead.

What happened to her?

A young girl gave birth at age 5. How is this even possible?

A baby is born in the South American country of Peru. The boy grows up with his 8 siblings, but unaware that his family is keeping a deep, dark secret. The real truth about his birth. That his older sister is really is mother, and that she gave birth to him when she was only 5 years old.

Sickness, drought and hunger may befall the tribe, caused by these so called cursed babies. And the only way to protect the tribe is to kill these babies after birth. In the last few decades, reality TV has become a worldwide phenomenon, offering viewers a voyeuristic look into the lives of everyday people, as well as celebrities. These seemingly unscripted shows, have huge audiences who tune in for the conflicts and dramas, emotional breakdowns and shocking twists. But behind the glitz and glamour, there is a dark side to reality tv which can negatively impact on the lives of its participants. For some, there is a high price to pay for the pursuit of fame and fortune.

Back in 1994, a 13 year old boy went missing in Texas, in the US. Three years later he was found alive in Spain, but with a harrowing story of abduction and a paedophile ring. His family was overjoyed to have him back home safe. But things were not quite as they seemed.

This episode looks at a practice which was common in Italy from the 16th to 19th centuries. A practice which saw young boys subjected to a procedure which resulted in their vocal cords not changing with the onset of adolescence. And this was the procedure of castration. The result was that a lack of testosterone allowed these boys to keep their youthful singing voices. The term used to describe these boys was the castrati, quite an unfortunate choice of word. As the castrati progressed into manhood, their voices became very unique.

So in churches all over Italy, including the Sistine chapel, these men made careers from singing. Their voices were preferred over male singers and their dominance was helped because the Vatican had banned women from church choirs in the 1500’s. And with the development of opera, these men also had lucrative careers as opera singers. For three centuries, these singers became superstars of their time, demanding high sums for their services, singing in choirs and operas in Italy, but their fame also spread all over Europe.

This episode covers the case of Marion Parker from the year 1927, followed by an episode of the radio play Dragnet which did a dramatization of the story back in 1949. Dragnet was a radio series which ran on NBC from 1949 to 1957 and then continued on as a television series. It featured real crime cases that had occurred in Los Angeles.

So what is the outcome of the trial? Guilty or not guilty?
