Are You Listening? All about education

Are You Listening? All about education

Are You Listening? is back and our first episode of 2024 is all about education. Love it or hate it, we have all had to go through it. This episode tackles a question many young people have asked throughout the generations, why is it a one-size-fits-all system?

Trigger warning: Mental health, Racism, death

****

This episode is brilliantly hosted by Hamzah (He/Him), alongside Syd (He/Him), T (She/Her) and Esah (He/Him), encapsulates a lot of the feelings of young people who have been or are going through the education system. The pressures are all expressed in this episode. If you can relate to what the podcast crew are saying, we would love to hear about your experiences too.

As Hamzah said in his closing address, we really want educators and the government to listen to this and hear what young people have to say. The UCL research showed a very clear relationship between academic pressure and mental ill health.

https://www.ucl.ac.uk/news/2023/aug/link-found-between-academic-pressure-and-mental-health-problems-adolescence

This isn’t a coincidence. We can all work together, educators, youth work practitioners, children’s workers, and governments to make sure that education isn’t resulting in a depletion of young people’s mental health.

We would love to see you at Youth in Mind 2024.

Dr Anisa-Ree Moses, off the back of her talk about authenticity, she spoke to Molly about the necessity for collaborative work across the sector to support children and young people's mental health. Gita Lobo explains why co-production is needed, especially with young people who are autistic, she was part of the panel that spoke about this in a deeper way. Hamzah and Fabian from In-Spire Sounds talk about how the work In-Spire Sounds has done continues to help them in their everyday life, from their mental health to lyric writing, it is a valuable source of support, creativity, and friendship.

Are You Listening?: All the shades of LGBTQ+

In the third episode of the LGBTQ+ miniseries, Ben (They/Them) was joined by Darius (He/Him) to host a brilliant array of guests to talk about the intersection between being a person of colour and being part of the LGBTQ+ community.

Xiao (She/Her), Mimi (She/Her) and Eva (She/It) discussed how personal identity is, the fetishisation of queer women of colour, representation, colonisation, and many other things.

This episode dives into many topics that we hope will start conversations about LGBTQ+ and race issues.

Are You Listening?: Youth Awards Spotlight - Jacari

Jacari won the Youth Project of the Year award at the 2020 Oxfordshire Youth Awards.

Through the Jacari Project Oxford, volunteers from Oxford University and Oxford Brookes University are paired with local children who have English as an additional language to deliver English lessons to them, many children are from migrant or refugee families. These lessons help to boost the children’s academic confidence and enable them to fully access the school curriculum.

Darius (He/Him) sat down with Freya (She/Her) about her experiences with the Youth Awards and all of the amazing work Jacari does.

Are You Listening?: You Can't Take Our Youth Away with Guests from Mandala Theatre Company (2)

It’s time for the second episode of You Can’t Take Our Youth Away - the second part of the Black Lives Matter podcast miniseries.

Darius chats to Yasmin Sidhwa, the Artistic Director of Mandala Theatre Company, and two of the amazing young people she works with: Akasha Daley (her daughter) and Luis Riberio. Akasha studies in Germany and she is a dancer and choreographer, she uses her gift for physical theatre to add more depth to characters. Luis also started off as a dancer and then got into theatre and has never looked back. They discuss the pain of seeing black trauma on social media every day, the reduction in protest news coverage, the necessity to amplify black stories especially black women and black trans people and so much more. They also give some good suggestions of things to watch on Netflix such as Dear White People, 13th and Black Earth Rising.
