37. Bachchan's Madhushala: Abhi to Main Jawaan Hun / मधुशाला में यौवन की बातें
Welcome to The Madhushala Podcast (मधुशाला मंथन), based on Harivansh Rai Bachchan's epic poetry. In this, we explore the soul and essence of Hindi poetry, poet's life-stories, philosophy and a bit of India's history.
In the previous episode, we told you about a road accident of Bachchan family and how Madhushala came to her poet’s rescue. Today, we talk about the stages of life, especially the significance of youth, with a reference from Shivaji Savant’s famous book ‘Mrityunjay’ and Robert Browning's Rabbi Ben Ezra.
पिछले अंक में बात की थी बच्चन परिवार के साथ घटी एक सड़क दुर्घटना की और किस तरह उनकी मधुशाला ने उन्हें एक मुसीबत से बचाया था। आज बात करते हैं जीवन की अवस्थाओं पर, विशेषकर - मानव जीवन में यौवन के महत्व की, यौवन के रंगों की, और यौवन के बीत जाने की।
ढलक रही हो तन के घट से, संगिनि, जब जीवन-हाला; पात्र गरल का ले जब अंतिम साकी हो आनेवाला,
हाथ परस भूले प्याले का, स्वाद-सुरा जीव्हा भूले; कानों में तुम कहती रहना, मधुकण, प्याला,मधुशाला ।।८१।
गिरती जाती है दिन प्रतिदन प्रणयनी प्राणों की हाला; भग्न हुआ जाता दिन प्रतिदन सुभगे मेरा तन प्याला,
रूठ रहा है मुझसे रूपसी, दिन दिन यौवन का साकी; सूख रही है दिन दिन सुन्दरी, मेरी जीवन मधुशाला ।।७९।
वो काली काली बदलियाँ, उफ़ुक़ पे हो गईं अयाँ
वो इक हुजूम-ए-मय-कशाँ, है सू-ए-मय-कदा रवाँ
ये क्या गुमाँ है बद-गुमाँ, समझ न मुझ को ना-तवाँ
ख़याल-ए-ज़ोहद अभी कहाँ, अभी तो मैं जवान हूँ

36. Bachchan's Madhushala: When the poem rescued her poet / मधुशाला ने अपने कवि को बचाया
In the previous episode, we had talked about the importance of dissatisfaction in life and told why Bachchan had to leave his well-organized life and go for military training, and some poems related to the same. Today let us tell you an incident about the Bachchan couple's road accident and how his poetry saved them.
पिछले अंक में बात की थी जीवन में असंतोष के महत्व की और बताया था कि बच्चन बाबू को अपना सुव्यवस्थित जीवन छोड़ कर फ़ौजी ट्रैनिंग के लिए क्यों जाना पड़ा, और उसी से जुड़ी कुछ कविताएं। आज सुनाते हैं एक किस्सा बच्चन दंपति की सड़क दुर्घटना का और कैसे उनकी कविता ने उन्हें बचा लिया। आज की कहानी का आरंभ मधुशाला की इस कविता के साथ करते हैं जिसने शायद इस घटना को घटित होने से पहले ही देख लिया था –
यम आएगा लेने जब, तब खूब चलूँगा पी हाला, पीड़ा, संकट, कष्ट नरक के क्या समझेगा मतवाला,
क्रूर, कठोर, कुटिल, कुविचारी, अन्यायी यमराजों के डंडों की जब मार पड़ेगी, आड़ करेगी मधुशाला ।।७६।

35. Bachchan's Madhushala: Fascination of what’s difficult / अंतिम साकी, अंतिम मधुशाला
In the previous episode, we had talked about the fragility of life, a small discussion on the ornaments of poetry called “Alankar”, and told why Bachchan's family members used to hide certain things from him. Today’s episode talks about the inherent dissatisfaction of man and why our poet had to undergo military training at one time. (Read more here). पिछले अंक में हमने जीवन की क्षण-भंगुरता पर बात की थी, एक छोटी सी चर्चा कविता के आभूषण अलंकारों पर, और बताया था कि बच्चन बाबू के परिवार जन कुछ बातें उनसे छुपा क्यों जाते थे। आज के अंक में बात मनुष्य के अंतर्निहित असंतोष की और हमारे कविराज को एक समय मिलिट्री ट्रैनिंग क्यों करनी पड़ी। यम आयेगा साकी बनकर साथ लिए काली हाला, पी न होश में फिर आएगा सुरा-विसुध यह मतवाला,
यह अंतिम बेहोशी, अंतिम साकी, अंतिम प्याला है, पथिक, प्यार से पीना इसको फिर न मिलेगी मधुशाला ।।८०।
The fascination of what's difficult (WB Yeats)
Has dried the sap out of my veins, and rent. Spontaneous joy and natural content. Out of my heart. There's something ails our colt
That must, as if it had not holy blood. Nor on Olympus leaped from cloud to cloud, Shiver under the lash, strain, sweat and jolt.
As though it dragged road metal.
My curse on plays, That have to be set up in fifty ways, On the day's war with every knave and dolt, Theatre business, management of men.

पिछले अंक में बात की थी बच्चन बाबू के अपने एक कॉमिक से परिचय की और कुछ हल्की-फुलकी बातें उनके इलाहाबाद विश्वविद्यालय में लेक्चरर वाले दिनों की। आज एक चर्चा जीवन की क्षण भंगुरता पर, और कुछ बातें कविता के आभूषण अलंकारों पर। क्षीण, क्षुद्र, क्षणभंगुर, दुर्बल मानव मिटटी का प्याला,
भरी हुई है जिसके अंदर कटु-मधु जीवन की हाला,
मृत्यु बनी है निर्दय साकी अपने शत-शत कर फैला,
काल प्रबल है पीनेवाला, संसृति है यह मधुशाला (७३)

प्याले सा गढ़ हमें किसी ने भर दी जीवन की हाला,
नशा न भाया, ढाला हमने ले लेकर मधु का प्याला,
जब जीवन का दर्द उभरता उसे दबाते प्याले से,

पिछले अंक में बात की थी कि कैसे कवियों का परिचय भी कविता जैसा ही होता है, एक किस्सा सुनाया था भारत कोकिला सरोजिनी नायडू से मुलाकात का और बच्चन परिवार के नेहरू परिवार से शुरुआती परिचय का, और एक कविता जीवन संघर्षों पर। आज के अंक में बात करते हैं बच्चन बाबू के एक कॉमिक परिचय की, और कुछ हल्की-फुल्की कविताई बातें बच्चन जी के जीवन अनुभवों से। मैं हूं बच्चन जी मस्ताना, लिखता हूँ मस्ती का गाना,

पिछले अंक पिछले अंक में हमने बात की थी कवि की अधूरी प्यास की, मधुशाला के प्यास बुझाने से ज़्यादा प्यास बढ़ाने की, और एक किस्सा सुनाया था बच्चन बाबू के विदेश मंत्रालय के दिनों से कि किस तरह भारत की स्वतंत्रता के बाद कुछ अंग्रेज़ी शब्दों का हिंदीकरण किया गया था। इस अंक में बात करते हैं कि लोग चिंता क्यों करते हैं और शुरुआत करते हैं मधुशाला की इस कविता से -
क्या पीना, निर्द्वन्द न जब तक ढाला प्यालों पर प्याला,
क्या जीना, निरंचित न जब तक साथ रहे साकीबाला,
खोने का भय, हाय, लगा है पाने के सुख के पीछे,
मिलने का आनंद न देती मिलकर के भी मधुशाला (६७)
और -
लिखी भाग्य में जितनी बस उतनी ही पाएगा हाला,
लिखा भाग्य में जैसा बस वैसा ही पाएगा प्याला,

32. Bachchan’s poetic introduction with Sarojini and Nehru-Indira / सरोजिनी नायडू, इंदिरा नेहरू से बच्चन का कविताई परिचय (Madhushala)
In the previous episode, we spoke about the insults that Bachchan has to endure during his Pioneer Press days and how later in his life, he took a sort of revenge on society for such old insults. In this episode, we speak about an interesting introduction with Sarojini Naidu and the India-Nehru family. (read more here) पिछले अंक में बात की थी कि पायोनियर प्रेस में काम करते हुए बच्चन जी को किस तरह कई दफ़ा अपमान सहना पड़ता था और मधुशाला में उसके बारे में वो क्या कहते हैं और समाज और साहित्य की दुनिया से वो अपने पुराने अपमानों का जुर्माना कैसे वसूलते थे। आज के अंक में एक मजेदार किस्सा कि सरोजिनी नायडू के साथ इंदिरा नेहरू से बच्चन परिवार का किस तरह से परिचय हुआ था।
सिर पर बाल घने, घुंघराले - काले, कड़े, बड़े, बिखरे-से,
मस्ती, आजादी, बेफिक्री, बेखबरी के हैं संदेसे ।
माथा उठा हुआ ऊपर को - भौंहों में कुछ टेढ़ापन है,
दुनिया को है एक चुनौती, - कभी नहीं झुकने का प्रण है।
नयनों में छाया-प्रकाश की - आँख-मिचौनी छिड़ी परस्पर,
बेचैनी में, बेसबरी में - लुके-छिपे हैं सपने सुंदर!!
सिर पर बाल कढ़े कंघी से - तरतीबी से, चिकने काले,
जग की रूढ़ि-रीति ने जैसे - मेरे ऊपर फंदे डाले।
भौंहें झुकी हुईं नीचे को, - माथे के ऊपर है रेखा,
अंकित किया जगत ने जैसे - मुझ पर अपनी जय का लेखा।
नयनों के दो द्वार खुले हैं, - समय दे गया ऐसी दीक्षा,
स्वागत सबके लिए यहाँ पर, - नहीं किसी के लिए प्रतीक्षा।

अपने अंगूरों से तन में हमने भर ली है हाला,
क्या कहते हो, शेख, नरक में हमें तपाएगी ज्वाला,
तब तो मदिरा खूब खिंचेगी और पिएगा भी कोई,
हमें नरक की ज्वाला में भी दीख पड़ेगी मधुशाला (७५)

31. After Life’s hard knocks, I found Madhushala / दुनिया भर की ठोकर खाकर पाई मैंने मधुशाला
In the previous episode, we spoke the games fate or ‘Niyati’ plays, and a story about Bachchan’s first independent and important decision in life when he was barely a teenager. We also read two poems by Maithilisharan Gupt and Ramdhari Singh ‘Dinkar’. (read more here) पिछले अंक में बात की थी बालक हरबंस राय के जीवन के पहले महत्वपूर्ण और स्वतंत्र निर्णय के बारे में, और चर्चा की थी भाग्य या नियति के पुरुषार्थ से संघर्ष के बारे में। इसी विषय में श्री मैथिलीशरण गुप्त और श्री रामधारी सिंह दिनकर की दो कविताएं भी सुनाई थी। आज के अंक में बात करते हैं जब पायोनियर प्रेस में काम करते हुए बच्चन जी को कई दफ़ा अपमान सहना पड़ता था।
दुख से जीवन बीता फिर भी - शेष अभी कुछ रहता,
जीवन की अंतिम घड़ियों में - भी तुमसे यह कहता
सुख की सांस पर होता - है अमरत्व निछावर,
तुम छू दो, मेरा प्राण अमर हो जाए!
तुम गा दो, मेरा गान अमर हो जाए!
मेरे वर्ण-वर्ण विश्रंखल - चरण-चरण भरमाए,
गूंज-गूंज कर मिटने वाले - मैनें गीत बनाये;
कूक हो गई हूक गगन की - कोकिल के कंठो पर,
तुम गा दो, मेरा गान अमर हो जाए!
तुम गा दो, मेरा गान अमर हो जाए!

ध्यान मान का, अपमानों का छोड़ दिया जब पी हाला, गौरव भूला, आया कर में जब से मिट्टी का प्याला,
साकी की अंदाज़ भरी झिड़की में क्या अपमान धरा, दुनिया भर की ठोकर खाकर पाई मैंने मधुशाला (७२)

कर ले, कर ले कंजूसी तू मुझको देने में हाला, दे ले, दे ले तू मुझको बस यह टूटा फूटा प्याला,
मैं तो सब्र इसी पर करता, तू पीछे पछताएगी, जब न रहूँगा मैं, तब मेरी याद करेगी मधुशाला (७१)

In the previous episode, we spoke about a story from Bachchan’s childhood and what his father’s family Guru had predicted about Bachchan’s future. पिछले अंक में हमने मधुशाला के संदर्भ में बात की थी कि लोग चिंता क्यों करते हैं, प्यास बुझा कर भी बुझाने का आनंद क्यों नहीं आता और एक बात भाग्य के खेल और शेक्सपियर की, ये भी बताया था के अमिताभ बच्चन ने अभिनय /acting में अपने हाथ कहाँ आजमाए थे। अब मधुशाला में कई सारी रुबाइयों में चर्चा होती है भाग्य और नियति के खेल पर, भाग्य और पौरुष के द्वन्द्व पर, तो चलिए उन्हीं में से दो कविताओं पर आज चर्चा करते हैं। बड़े बड़े परिवार मिटें यों, एक न हो रोनेवाला,

पिछले अंक में हमने बात की थी स्वाभिमान की, कुछ संकोच की, कुछ पहली हिचकिचाहट की, और उससे आगे बढ़ने की और यदि इंसान में सामर्थ्य हो तो वो क्या कुछ नहीं कर सकता – और सुनाई थी वीर रस की एक छोटी सी कविता। अब मधुशाला में सामाजिक भेदभाव पर तो कई सारी कविताएं हैं, उन्हीं में से एक आज सुनते हैं और साथ ही एक किस्सा बच्चन बाबू के पिताजी से जुड़ा हुआ, शुरुआत करते हैं मधुशाला की इस चतुष्पदी से -

20. Madhushala: Hole in the Bucket and Introverts | मधुशाला में संकोच, स्वाभिमान, साकी से छेड़छाड़
In the previous episode, we spoke about ‘Rambha’, one of the apsaras (nymph, fairy) from Indralok (heavens), and Apsaras in the life of Dr Bachchan. There was also a story of Yagna and Som-Sura and a word Dron-Kalash. Today, we talk about the initial hesitation, self-respect, moving beyond and that humans can do anything with their own abilities. In the previous episode, we spoke about nostalgia and augmented reality, how we see some old faces and visuals in a different context. We also told a beautiful story of Emerald island (Markat). Do you recall which country we were talking about? Today, we are talking about the nymphs of the heaven and earth (Apsara) but they descend on earth when there is a Yagya, so let’s head there :)

Bonus Episode - Women in Bachchan's Life - Champa and Iris | मधुशाला - आइरिस, चंपा, मृग तृष्णा
Mrig Trishna or Mirage - this is the story of two women in Mr Bachchan’s life and the reflection of these experiences on his poetry. Circa 1925, Champa who was Karkal’s wife, and a dream-world that a young Harivansh and his best friend Karkal had weaved together with Champa, followed by two tragic deaths.
Fast forward to 1939, then comes Iris, one with blue eyes and light brown hair who inspired one of his most beautiful poems but not until 13 years in the land of Ireland. Iris proved to be a mirage, however. As he then said – “चल अभागे मन, कहीं अब और मैं तुझको रमाऊँ” ...
As part of these stories, we are also reading a couple of poems from Ramdhari Singh Dinkar - और त्रिया जो अबल, मात्र आंसू, केवल करुणा है
And a “Savaiya” from Raskhan on Shri Krishna...

18. Madhushala: Nostalgia and Emerald Island "Ireland" | मधुशाला में मरकत द्वीप की कविता
In the previous episode, we spoke about the deep and strange relationship between the arid sandy deserts of Sahara and the dense green rainforests of Amazon, the Yin-Yang of it and why we discuss this in Madhushala. One more story was from Bachchan’s childhood, of his birthday and Chamarin Amma (shout out episode 12). Today, we will talk about Bachchan’s friend “Karkal”, nostalgia, and emerald island in Madhushala.
पिछले अंक में हमने बात की थी कि Amazon rain forest यानी Amazon के घने बरसाती जंगलों और सहारा के सूखे रेतीले रेगिस्तान का आपस में क्या रिश्ता है, इसमें Yin-Yang का क्या संदर्भ है और मधुशाला में ये बातें कहाँ से आ गई! और एक कहानी सुनाई थी बच्चन जी के बचपन की, जिसमें चमारिन अम्मा से जुड़ा एक किस्सा भी था। आज बात करते हैं कुछ nostalgia, augmented reality, बच्चन जी के मित्र “कर्कल” की, और मरकत द्वीप की।

17. Madhushala: Yin-Yang, Butterfly Effect | मधुशाला में वर्षा ऋतु, पर्यावरण, बचपन
In the previous episode, we time-travelled to Mahabharat era where Guru Drona was testing his students and then we spoke about Koyal’s penance, how it turned white to black. In this episode, we take a walk in the nature and how far and distant objects in the universe are all linked with each other – as displayed in the first Rubaai today.
पिछले एपिसोड में हमने थोड़ा टाइम-ट्रैवल किया था और हम चले गए थे महाभारत युग में जहां गुरु द्रोणाचार्य अपने शिष्यों की परीक्षा ले रहे थे, और एक बात बताई थी कोयल सफेद से काली क्यूँ हो गई और ऐसी क्या तपस्या की थी। आज हम मधुशाला में प्रकृति की बात कर रहे हैं कि कैसे दूर दूर तक के हिस्से एक दूसरे से जुड़े हुए हैं – सुनते हैं इस एपिसोड में।

Bonus Episode - अभी तो मैं जवान हूँ | Bachchan's Comic Introduction / Robert Browning Rabbi Ben Ezra (Madhushala)
In 1954, when Bachchan ji landed in Mumbai after sailing for 18 days on his return journey from London, there was a Kavi Goshthi organized in his honor. He was asked to recite some poems, but he recited a fun parody instead, rhyming with the names of his most popular poems :-) such as -
मैं हूं बच्चन जी मस्ताना, लिखता हूँ मस्ती का गाना,
मैंने खोली है मधुशाला, जिसमें रहती है मधुबाला!
Then we also talk about Robert Browning’s “Rabbi Ben Ezra” and Hafeez Jalandhari’s “Abhi to main jawaan hoon” while talking about different stages of life.

Bonus Episode - Madhushala aur Baat Bareilly Ki | बात बरेली की और मधुशाला
Bareilly has played a very important and dramatic role in Bachchan’s life. Circa 1938, it’s just been about a year since the death of Shyama, the first wife of Shri Harivansh Rai Bachchan. He has not written any new poem since her passing but attends poetry events (Kavi Sammelan) for his own peace (स्वांत: सुखाय). One such invite came from Bareilly and this is where he comes across an admirer of his poetry, who commits suicide in front of the very train that Mr Bachchan was travelling on.
गिर-गिर टूटे घट-प्याले, - बुझ दीप गए सब क्षण में,
सब चले किए सिर नीचे - ले अरमानों की झोली;
गूँजी मदिरालय भर में - लो, ‘चलो, चलो’ की बोली!
But, can his poetry be termed ‘Morbid’, or be held responsible to driving one to end his/her life? Madhushala does not urge people to do this, even in its sadness, some such lines:
कुचल हसरतें कितनी अपनी, हाय, बना पाया हाला,
कितने अरमानों को करके ख़ाक बना पाया प्याला!
पी पीनेवाले चल देंगे, हाय, न कोई जानेगा,
कितने मन के महल ढहे तब खड़ी हुई यह मधुशाला!
We also talk about an English poet AE Houseman, whose poetry actually urged people to end their life if it becomes a burden. He said, “And if your hand or foot offend you – Cut it off, lad, and be whole; But play the man, stand up and end you – When your sickness is your soul”

Bonus Episode - OSHO Rajneesh and Bachchan's Madhushala | ओशो रजनीश और बच्चन की मधुशाला
Circa 1950s to 1970s – That there was a bond between Acharya Rajneesh aka OSHO and Dr Harivansh Rai Bachchan is not a common knowledge. There were similarities between Osho’s preaching and the messages from Madhushala even though Madhushala was written when Osho was a toddler. It is said that he was inspired by Madhushala and other poems of Bachchan ji, which is reflected in his sermons and at his Ashrams. Such as – धर्मग्रन्थ सब जला चुकी है जिसके अन्तर की ज्वाला, कर सकती है आज उसी का स्वागत मेरी मधुशाला!
Or this when it comes to Dhyaan or Meditation - ध्यान किए जा मन में सुमधुर सुखकर, सुन्दर साक़ी का, और चलाचल, पथिक, न तुझको दूर लगेगी मधुशाला!
Or this when it comes to dancing in a state of trance – आँख चार हों जिसकी मेरे साकी से दीवाना हो, पागल बनकर नाचे वह जो आए मेरी मधुशाला

We also discussed the story of Professor Amarnath Jha, who was a mentor to Dr Bachchan and how he had decided about his last rituals even when he was alive. In this episode, let’s talk about the happiness and sorrow coming together in life.
पिछले अंक में हमने बात की थी मंदिर मस्जिद मदिरालय के बारे में नोकझोंक भरी कुछ शेरो-शायरी की – ग़ालिब, इकबाल, अहमद फराज़ आदि और बात की थी बच्चन जी के गुरु प्रोफेसर अमरनाथ झा की और उन्होंने अपनी मृत्यु के बारे में पहले से ही क्या तय कर लिया था! आज सुनते बातें सुख और दुख के साथ आने की -

In the previous episode, we shared the story of ‘Chamma’ (Lachhminiya aka Chamarin Amma), who was she to newly born Harivansh Rai and what effect she had on his poetry, written much later. There was another story of Bachchan’s birth in ‘Mool Nakshatra’ and what happened because of that! Today we start with some poetic banter between Ghalib, Iqbal and others. There is also a story of Professor Amarnath Jha and how is he related to Dr. Bachchan.
पिछले अंक में हमने बात की थी की बच्चन जी के बचपन में लछमिनियाँ कौन थी, उन्हें चम्मा क्यूँ कहते थे और उनका बच्चन जी पर क्या असर रहा, और एक बात की थी उनके मूल नक्षत्र में जन्म होने की – आज शुरुआत करते हैं ग़ालिब और इकबाल की कुछ बातों से – ग़ालिब कहते हैं:
"ज़ाहिद शराब पीने दे मस्जिद में बैठ कर - या वो जगह बता दे जहाँ ख़ुदा न हो"
आगे क्या हुआ सुनते हैं एपिसोड में, और चर्चा करते हैं बच्चन जी के गुरु प्रोफेसर अमरनाथ झा की, चलिए सुनते हैं:
सजें न मस्जिद और नमाज़ी कहता है अल्लाताला, सजधजकर, पर, साकी आता, बन ठनकर, पीनेवाला,
शेख, कहाँ तुलना हो सकती मस्जिद की मदिरालय से, चिर विधवा है मस्जिद तेरी, सदा सुहागिन मधुशाला (48)

बिना पिये जो मधुशाला को बुरा कहे, वह मतवाला, पी लेने पर तो उसके मुँह पर पड़ जाएगा ताला,
दास द्रोहियों दोनों में है जीत सुरा की, प्याले की, विश्वविजयिनी बनकर जग में आई मेरी मधुशाला (24)

ज्ञात हुआ यम आने को है ले अपनी काली हाला, पंडित अपनी पोथी भूला, साधू भूल गया माला,
और पुजारी भूला पूजा, ज्ञान सभी ज्ञानी भूला, किन्तु न भूला मरकर के भी पीनेवाला मधुशाला (86)

In the previous episode, we discussed the story behind the name “Harivansh Rai” and of a bad experience Bachchan had as a kid for being a Kayasth, and how this experience impacted his poetry. We continue talking about some of Bachchan’s childhood memories in this episode, especially who was Chamarin Amma (aka Chamma) in Bachchan's life.
पिछले अंक में हमने बात की थी कि कविराज बच्चन जी का नाम हरिवंश राय कैसे रखा गया और सुनाया था एक किस्सा उनके बचपन का जब कायस्थ होने की वजह से उनका एक बार अपमान हुआ था और इसका असर उन पर क्या पड़ा! आज उसी सिलसिले में बच्चन जी के बचपन की कुछ और बातें। मधुशाला में कई कविताओं में देखने को मिलता है कि कैसे मधुशाला धर्म जाति और समाज के रूढ़िवादी रीति रिवाजों से दूर रहने का संदेश देती है, जैसे ये कविता सुनिए -
कोई भी हो शेख नमाज़ी या पंडित जपता माला, बैर भाव चाहे जितना हो मदिरा से रखनेवाला,
एक बार बस मधुशाला के आगे से होकर निकले, देखूँ कैसे थाम न लेती दामन उसका मधुशाला! (51)

पथिक बना मैं घूम रहा हूँ, सभी जगह मिलती हाला, सभी जगह मिल जाता साकी, सभी जगह मिलता प्याला,
मुझे ठहरने का, हे मित्रों, कष्ट नहीं कुछ भी होता, मिले न मंदिर, मिले न मस्जिद, मिल जाती है मधुशाला (47)

बजी नफ़ीरी और नमाज़ी भूल गया अल्लाताला, गाज गिरी, पर ध्यान सुरा में मग्न रहा पीनेवाला,
शेख, बुरा मत मानो इसको, साफ़ कहूँ तो मस्जिद को, अभी युगों तक सिखलाएगी ध्यान लगाना मधुशाला (49)

आज की मधुशाला कविताएं और कहानियाँ - जब बच्चन जी के जीवन में उहापोह की स्थिति आई थी वो मधुशाला की कविता में भी झलक उठी -
चलने ही चलने में कितना जीवन, हाय, बिता डाला - 'दूर अभी है', पर, कहता है हर पथ बतलाने वाला,
हिम्मत है न बढूँ आगे को साहस है न फिरुँ पीछे, किंकर्तव्यविमूढ़ मुझे कर दूर खड़ी है मधुशाला ।।७।
And -
मदिरा पीने की अभिलाषा ही बन जाए जब हाला - अधरों की आतुरता में ही जब आभासित हो प्याला,
बने ध्यान ही करते-करते जब साकी साकार, सखे, रहे न हाला, प्याला, साकी, तुझे मिलेगी मधुशाला ।।९।

What did Dr Bachchan call #Madhushala a penance?
From the grapes of experiences and imagination - the poet has created this wine called Haala and welcomes the world to his House of Wine, aka Madhushala.
मृदु भावों के अंगूरों की आज बना लाया हाला, प्रियतम, अपने ही हाथों से आज पिलाऊँगा प्याला,
पहले भोग लगा लूँ तेरा फिर प्रसाद जग पाएगा, सबसे पहले तेरा स्वागत करती मेरी मधुशाला ।।१।
And then the poet who has sacrificed the sweetness of his life, will shower the joys of Madhushala on the readers / listeners of his poem.
प्यास तुझे तो, विश्व तपाकर पूर्ण निकालूँगा हाला, एक पाँव से साकी बनकर नाचूँगा लेकर प्याला,
जीवन की मधुता तो तेरे ऊपर कब का वार चुका, आज निछावर कर दूँगा मैं तुझ पर जग की मधुशाला ।।२।

December 1933 - the very first public recitation of Madhushala, at Shivaji Hall – Kashi University and the magical effect it had on the audience. First day was common for several poets but by the end of the day, Madhushala became such a rage that everybody wanted a day dedicated only to Bachchan and his Madhushala – the poem had a mesmerizing effect on her audience. The chairperson of the event – Manoranjan Prasad ji even wrote several parodies, which were recited during the breaks. One such parody was –
भूल गया तस्बीह नमाज़ी, पंडित भूल गया माला, चला दौर जब पैमानों का, मग्न हुआ पीनेवाला
आज नशीली-सी कविता ने, सबको ही बदहोश किया, कवि बनकर महफ़िल में आई, चलती-फिरती मधुशाला!
रूपसि, तूने सबके ऊपर, कुछ अजीब जादू डाला, नहीं खुमारी मिटती कहते, दो बस प्याले पर प्याला,
कहाँ पड़े हैं, किधर जा रहे, है इसकी परवाह नहीं, यही मनाते हैं, इनकी आबाद रहे यह मधुशाला!
भर-भर कर देता जा, साक़ी मैं कर दूँगा दीवाला, अजब शराबी से तेरा भी, आज पड़ा आकर पाला,
लाख पिएँ, दो लाख पिएँ, पर कभी नहीं थकनेवाला, अगर पिलाने का दम है तो, जारी रखें यह मधुशाला।
