Live Webinar: 'An Audience With... Will Evans'

Will Evans, founder and host of the ever-popular podcast, 'Rock & Roll Farming' and regular Farmers Weekly columnist joined us for episode six of our monthly 'Audience With...' webinar.

Will's weekly podcast has featured over 180 farmers and characters from the industry since its launch in April 2017.    He says: "British farming is about many things - world-renowned landscapes, ground-breaking innovation and technology, and incredible and varied livestock. But mostly it’s about people. The people who get up early in the morning and put their hearts and souls into what they do every single day."

Andrew Robinson, Head of Agriculture for Armstrong Watson hosted, as we heard of some incredible characters Will has interviewed over the years and discussed why he is so passionate about giving farming a voice.

Will and his family have been farming near Wrexham in Wales for hundreds of years. He now farms in partnership with his parents running a herd of 330 beef cattle and arable crops.  Will is also Oxford Farming Conference Director and Co-Founder and community manager of eatfarmnow.com which brings together all the best farming content, showcasing our food and how it is produced. Live Webinar: 'An Audience With... Annabel Hamilton'

Borders-based arable and beef farmer Annabel Hamilton, joined Andrew Robinson, Head of Agriculture, for the fifth episode of our 'Audience With...' series.

Annabel, alongside her father Will, farm 2,500 acres along the Berwickshire coast. They produce high-quality malting barley for Simpsons Malt which is then shipped all over the world. One particular heritage variety, Golden Promise is used by Timothy Taylor in West Yorkshire. Annabel and Will also fatten over 300 cattle a year, produced for quality butchers.

Despite her youth, Annabel is highly experienced in farm management having gained valuable insight whilst overseeing the arable operations of large farm businesses in Northumberland and Lincolnshire before returning to the family farm in recent years.  Annabel recently took the spotlight on the ‘Farmers of the UK’ Twitter page and has a large following herself.  She regularly shares how she and her father are approaching the subject of succession, something she sees as a vitally important topic in Agriculture. She discussed this and revealed more details of the family’s latest diversification – a pick your own pumpkin patch. She also divulged some of the highly efficient practices her family employs on their farm to gain valuable time back and ensure the business is thriving.

Live Webinar: 'An Audience With... Roan's Dairy'

In this second episode in the 'Audience With..' series,  Andrew Robinson, our Head of Agriculture, is joined by Tracey and Aylett Roan whose family have been milking pedigree Holstein cows in Dumfries and Galloway for six generations.

The Roan family’s story dates back to 1891 when the farm would deliver fresh, free-range milk to the Barnbarroch locals. In 2015 the family started processing their own milk and launched Fresher Than Udders Milk. Since then, demand has soared and free-range milk from Roan’s Dairy is now delivered to doorsteps across Dumfries and Galloway as well as being sold to shops, cafes, restaurants, and hotels. The award-winning business then went on to launch The Udder Bar, a quirky trailer kitted out with everything Aylett and Tracey need to create fresh milkshakes at events across Scotland.

Listen in to hear their fascinating story; exactly how Roan's Dairy has evolved over the years and just what it was like starring in BBC Two's series 'This Farming Life' (Series 2).

Live Webinar: 'An Audience With... Will Case'

Live Webinar: 'An Audience With... Will Case'

Cumbrian mixed farmer and NFU ambassador Will Case featured in our fourth episode of 'An Audience With...Will Case.'

Will and his family have created a hugely diverse farming business over the years. The key to their success has been to ensure each enterprise stacks up individually; we asked exactly how they've done that:

•    How their diversification into free-range hens became the most profitable part of the farm

•    How this allowed the family to split the business into two viable farms

•    How his Salt Marsh Lambs are reared for Booths and other quality butchers

•    How he adds further value to his business with pedigree breeding Texels and shearling ram sales

For Will, who sees himself as a 'proud custodian of the countryside', his work is a family affair with a 400-year long farming legacy. He has worked with his brother and parents, focusing on diversifying into dairy and free-range hens alongside their livestock trade, to ultimately build two viable farm businesses which are now run separately by Will and his brother.

Andrew Robinson, our Head of Agriculture hosted this online event and discussed with NFU ambassador Will about how the family has really made the best of what they’ve got and in turn, safeguarded the wider family’s livelihood for future generations.
