Surviving In Death Valley Brent Underwood Releases The Book Ghost Town Living

Surviving In Death Valley Brent Underwood Releases The Book Ghost Town Living

A long-abandoned silver mine for sale sounded like an adventure too great to pass up, but it turned into much more-a calling, a community of millions, and hard-earned lessons about chasing impractical dreams.

"Inspiring and meditative-the story of man vs nature and man vs himself."-Ryan Holiday, #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Obstacle is the Way

The siren song of Cerro Gordo, a desolate ghost town perched high above Death Valley, has seduced thousands since the 1800s, but few fell harder for it than Brent Underwood, who moved there in March of 2020, only to be immediately snowed in and trapped for weeks.

It had once been the largest silver mine in California. Over $500 million worth of ore was pulled from the miles of tunnels below the town. Butch Cassidy, Mark Twain, and other infamous characters of the American West were rumored to have stayed there. Newspapers reported a murder a week. But that was over 150 years ago.

Underwood bet his life savings-and his life-on this majestic, hardscrabble town that had broken its fair share of ambitious men and women. What followed were fires, floods, earthquakes, and perhaps strangest, fame. Ghost Town Living tells the story of a man against the elements, a forgotten historic place against the modern world, and a dream against all odds-one that has captured millions of followers around the world.

He came looking for a challenge different from the traditional 9-5 job but discovered something much more fulfilling-an undertaking that would call on all of himself and push him beyond what he knew he was capable of. In fact, to bring this abandoned town back to life, Brent had to learn a wealth of new self-sufficiency and problem-solving skills from many generous mentors.

Ghost Town Living is a thrilling read, but it's also a call to action-to question our too-practical lives and instead seek adventure, build something original, redefine work, and embrace the unknown. It shows what it means to dedicate your life to something, to take a mighty swing at a crazy idea and, like the cardsharps who once haunted Cerro Gordo, go all in.

Nika Comet And Alexander Mishustov From The Band Chase The Comet

Nika Comet And Alexander Mishustov From The Band Chase The Comet

In 2016 singer Nika Comet and guitarist Alexander Mishustov took a one-way ticket from Moscow, Russia to Los Angeles, CA with just a guitar, a microphone, and a passion for artistry in music.

High school sweethearts, eco-vegan activists, Nika and Alex, fell in love while playing in a band named The Sun. There, they released a few albums for themselves, played the biggest festivals and worked as session musicians and recording artists. With their band they went into the finals of a TV-show similar to “American Idol”.

The couple’s musical resume demonstrates their musicianship. Before arriving in America, Nika sang backup vocals for Tarakany!, one of the most famous Russian punk bands. Her partner, Alex, shared grand stages in Russia as an opener for Metallica, Linkin Park, Muse, Incubus, and more.

Knowing they wanted to share their music with the world, they moved to the epicenter of the media industry, Los Angeles. Releasing their first EP in 2017 titled, ‘This is MyRockBand’ and then their first English language album, ‘Rush’N’Rule’ in 2018 they played some iconic venues both in Los Angeles and around the country.

After touring in more than 20 cities across 7 states and growing an international online following, the couple returned to the studio to record their next full-length album “Out of the Matrix” that came out in 2019. The music video for the main single from the album, ‘Gone’ has gained over 200 K views on Facebook.

2020 started for Chase the Comet with a collaboration released on the biggest European independent metal label ‘Napalm Records’. It was the cover on the famous ‘All The Things She Said’ originally performed by a Russian band ‘t.A.T.u recorded together with Lena Scissorhands, frontwoman for an internationally renowned Moldovan metal-band ‘Infected Rain’. The cover has gained over 1 M views on YouTube.

After Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022, both Nika and Alex expressed their position openly rallying for Ukraine and performing at multiple fundraisers in support of refugees and the citizens. In 2023 Nika and Alex were finally received their long due O-1 artist visas and signed a deal with Pavement Entertainment. Their new album “Ill.U.Me.Nation. Part I: Inception” is out now.

Culture Critic Noah Gittell Releases The Book Baseball The Movie

Culture Critic Noah Gittell Releases The Book Baseball The Movie

Featuring Field of Dreams, The Bad News Bears, A League of Their Own and more: a probing and entertaining work at the intersection of pop culture and sports

Baseball has always been a symbol as much as a sport. With a blend of individual confrontation and team play, a luxurious pace, and an immaculate urban parkland setting, it offers a sunny rendering of the American Dream, both the hard work that underpins it and the rewards it promises.

Film, America's other national pastime, which magnifies and mythologizes all it touches, has long been the ideal medium to canonize this aspirational idea.

Baseball: The Movie is the first definitive history of this film genre that was born in 1915 and remains artistically and culturally vital more than a century later. Writer and critic Noah Gittell sheds light on well-known classics and overlooked gems, exploring how baseball cinema creates a stage upon which the American ideal is born, performed, and repeatedly redefined.

Traversing history and mythmaking, cynicism and nostalgia, this thoroughly researched book takes readers on a multifaceted tour of baseball on film.

A shadowy gloominess lurks within the forest this new sun. Normally I've got too much in the ways of rays of light. The forest has felt moody as of late. As if to be searching for something. And I often wonder if it's appearance is actually a reflection of where we presently stand.

The Investigation Is Everything True Crime Author Doug Kari Releases The Berman Murders

At daybreak on January 6, 1986, a couple on a camping trip in the Mojave Desert set out for a stroll and never returned. The local sheriff’s office eventually discovered that Barry Berman, heir to the Kahlua fortune, and his wife Louise had been murdered. As years passed and the double homicide remained unsolved, the Berman case spawned speculation and conjecture. Despite extensive investigation by local and federal authorities, the case remains unsolved -- there’s never been an arrest, let alone a conviction. After years of investigation, research, and interviews, Kari was able to link the Berman murders to a Cambodian sex crimes and trafficking case involving a former Marine. This is the first book to tell the full story of the Berman murders.

Showing up to the performance, the expectation, the mountain and or the wall. Being physically there when your heart wants a different journey. A coworkers question came to me as being odd and almost overboard. But he's known for it. I'm a professional interviewer, therefore I feel there's got to be a time when I experience someone asking me questions. The question wasn't what bothered me. It was how I instantly went into asking myself how I was going to remain calm with the answer. The number one goal was to showcase how I forgave myself more than I carried it forward. His question? What's the angriest I've ever been?

The geography speaks for itself. The bad guys are just kilometers away, across the river. We are the only international (or locals) with a brick and mortar office downtown, for them to go for help. No assistance from govt unless elderly, and the assistance they get is shit.
Office safe from “normal” shelling (tank fire, most mortars). Glide bombs and attack drones are new since Ukrainians landed on other side and have beachhead. Quietly, that is a total massacre over there — poorly kept secret here. can’t do much about the big stuff … if we get hit with a glide bomb we’re fucked. I like our chances.
Mon wed Friday the FREE STORE AT THE FRONT is open at our office. Basic foods medicines hygiene and winter clothes. Author And Racial Justice Educator Debby Iirving Celebrates The 10th Anniversary Waking Up White

Author And Racial Justice Educator Debby Iirving Celebrates The 10th Anniversary Waking Up White

When Waking Up White: And Finding Myself in the Story of Race launched in January 2014, author Debby Irving provided a “Racism 101” for white people and a rare exposé on whiteness for people of color.  It was the book she wished someone had handed her decades ago. “Like most white Americans, I completely misunderstood what racism was and how it had always been operating in my life and in my white community.” Irving designed the book to read like a memoir yet include educational conversation prompts at the end of each chapter. And, as she hoped and anticipated, educators and book groups adopted Waking Up White to take on this challenging issue. She planned to devote two years to marketing her story to book groups and educators.

What Irving did not anticipate was the national eruption of racial and gender tensions that would make daily headlines, driving white communities to her story. With escalating demand for the book, keynote speeches, and related workshops, Irving instead has continued to help educate and inform church groups of many denominations, well known businesses, country clubs, schools of all levels and other community action groups from coast to coast. In the five years since publication, Irving has seen interest in understanding racism skyrocket in predominantly white communities, often at the urging of community members of color who use Irving’s book as an entrée to how racism operates. “We are in an immensely teachable moment in which many white people are understanding for the first time just how misled they’ve been about America’s purported level playing field,” explains Irving.

In Waking Up White, Irving her own life to explore the everyday systemic racism that goes largely unnoticed yet perpetuates long-held racialized belief systems. By sharing her sometimes cringe-worthy struggle to understand racism and racial tensions, she offers a fresh perspective on bias, stereotypes, manners, and tolerance. As she unpacks her own long-held beliefs about colorblindness, being a good person, and wanting to help people of color, she reveals how each of these well-intentioned mindsets actually perpetuated her ill-conceived ideas about race. In both the book and in workshops, Irving explains why and how she herself has changed the way she talks about racism, works in racially mixed groups, and understands the racial justice movement as a whole.

Dave Diamond And Mister Zero From The Kings Release The Longest Story Ever Told

Dave Diamond And Mister Zero From The Kings Release The Longest Story Ever Told

The Kings' singer/bassist David Diamond, guitarist Mister Zero, keyboardist Sonny Keyes, and drummer Todd Reynolds are happy to announce the release of their 7th album, “The Longest Story Ever Told".

Opener “Always Off The Deep End” is a power pop gem about that friend who never does anything halfway, and people are getting up and dancing to “I Know So", an up-tempo romp with a rockin' sax section. Both songs come with super fun videos as well.

Americana Highways’ writer John Apice, who requested an album before the U.S. campaign, raves over the whole album, calling out “A Rose For Your Stone” for its “Spanish-flavored horns.” Inspired by Spaghetti Westerns, the song is a story where the main character is anything but a hero.

Apice writes, "lead singer David Diamond’s voice is still as powerful as when he sang “This Beat Goes On/Switchin’ To Glide” on the group’s first album ‘The Kings Are Here’." Apice went on to praise Dave has having “one of the greatest R&R voices ever recorded….Diamond’s vocals are as authoritative as Jim Morrison, Mick Jagger, Ray Davies,” and the band. “They sound like a nuclear reactor started up again. I know rock bands that can’t stand toe to toe with them today. Just listen to the significance they display, the intonation & phrasing – rock n’ roll at its best.”

In true fashion for The Kings, there are epic-length rockers with hooks, like the title track “The Longest Story Ever Told”, where Diamond gives his take on the history of the band, and another two-song segue “Circle of Friends/Man That I Am", that reminds us of the value of friendship.

The album has range, including the heavy sounding "Nowhere to Go But Gone”, which states "There is no trip like a road trip". "When Dreams Come True" is a gorgeous wedding ballad that tells the story of the power of new beginnings. The album closes with three big rockers, “Clean Shot”, retro-rocker "She Don't Fool Around" and “Triangle Blues” which concerns, as Diamond says, “the third wheel that might be getting a bit too close for comfort".

"The Longest Story Ever Told" is The Kings’ 7th studio album following the release of “Because of You”. A musical triumph, the new 10-track album features a lineup of iconic music industry veterans handling the mixing console, including Bob Ezrin (Pink Floyd, Alice Cooper, Deep Purple), Terry Brown (RUSH), Garth Richardson (Rage Against The Machine) and more.

NY Times Best Selling Author And Columnist Steve Phillips Releases How We Win The Civil War

It appears as if the 2024 presidential race is all but set as a rematch of 2020...but even though Donald Trump has pleaded not guilty to a total of 91 felony charges across both state and federal charges…his grip on the Republican party has never been stronger.

In the new edition of HOW WE WIN THE CIVIL WAR, author and political thought leader Steve Phillips discusses The New American Majority – which consists of people of color plus progressive whites….a sum of people who want to see this nation become a multiracial democracy.

Phillips believes that with The New American Majority – Democrats could and should keep the White House, flip the House, and hold the Senate….thereby defending the multiracial democracy from attacks by modern-day Confederates.

Phillips also analyzes what happened in the 2022 midterm elections – including why there was no Red Wave and what happened in Georgia (e.g. why Stacey Abrams lost but Rev. Raphael Warnock won).

The Daily Mess The High Cost Of Storage Mental And Physical

The Daily Mess The High Cost Of Storage Mental And Physical

March 19, 2024

The one thing I hear a lot about these days is the high cost of storage.  The rental space is more like a house payment.  Because it’s become unaffordable lives are swiftly changing.  My wife and I did the Swedish Death Cleaning where if someone in your family doesn’t want it, throw it out.  It was really well until we got the items with sentimental value.  Do you sell, save them or throw them out?  The house is full and over flowing.  When is it time to clear things out?  Mentally and physically…

America's Most Secret Military Group The Unit Adam Gamal Was Part Of It Now He Writes About It

America's Most Secret Military Group The Unit Adam Gamal Was Part Of It Now He Writes About It

The first and only book to be written by a member of America's most secret military unit!

Adam Gamal (pseudonym), one of the only Muslim Arab Americans to serve inside "The Unit" - as the Department of Defense has asked us to refer to it - has written one of the most explosive and unlikely stories of immigration, service and sacrifice -- THE UNIT: My Life Fighting Terrorists as One of America's Most Secret Military Operatives, written with Kelly Kennedy (St. Martin's Press, on sale date February 20, 2024, $32.00).

**As a heads up - Adam will be disguised on camera and voice altered for audio due to security concerns**

Within the U.S. military there is a team so secretive that not only is the name of this unit classified, its members are like ghosts to the military personnel in the country. Veterans Affairs doesn't even have them listed. Phantoms or not, this highly-trained team has been responsible for preventing dozens of terrorist attacks against the U.S. and Western world. This is the world in which Adam Gamal lived. Before that, his life in Egypt was one of great dismay as the Muslim Brotherhood overran a once-free country. When he arrived in the U.S., he spoke no English, was 5'1", 112 pounds, and certainly was far from what one would expect a future soldier to be. He loved his new country, and soon enlisted in the U.S. Army, feeling a great compulsion to serve a nation that gave him the freedom he craved.

From his first deployment in Bosnia, to his search for Saddam Hussein in Iraq, to his work in Africa fighting against the very same Muslim Brotherhood that terrorized his community in Egypt when he was a child, he offers a gripping first-hand account of our nation's most secret military unit. His tales of a cat-and-mouse game tracking terrorist Aden Hashi Ayro - the head of the Hizb al-Shabab, or youth wing of the Islamic Courts Union, who it was believed led militias within Somalia - are filled with tension.

Gamal also goes into great detail about the diversification of our nation's defenses. As he says in THE UNIT, he was often mistaken for being Hispanic, and relates stories of other members of the military who were from a Middle Eastern background who passed for Latino. But because they could blend in within those communities overseas when hunting bad guys, they gave the U.S. an advantage in gathering intelligence necessary to capture terrorists. Fair-haired and fair-skinned American soldiers are going to stick out in many nations dealing with conflict, especially those representing threats to the U.S. Gamal strongly believes that immigrants would make extraordinary soldiers. He feels that women, people of color, and immigrants do things differently. They see things differently, and meld different views, strategies, and thought processes when engaging enemies. This is crucial and often overlooked.

Gamal talks about the importance of keeping up with intelligence and why future wars will resemble nothing like they have throughout the 20th century and the very early years of the 21st century. America needs to do a better job relating with the citizenry of our allies, and those defending them. Along the way, we abandoned the idea of winning hearts and minds, he argues, and America needs to return to that way of thinking.
