The Daily Mess Embracing The Real People Stories

The Daily Mess Embracing The Real People Stories

It can be dangerous to be a listener. An emotional sport. Once you make contact with another real person the goal shouldn't be to locate a new BFF. You've captured a moment of time. A place of receiving. Now let it move through you to another person. We've eased up as a generation on our ways to make real people connections. Mainly because there's no more room for a BFF. So we've turned off our reason to just be with someone. It's an interesting world. It's time to listen to it.

Renowned Conservationist Dr M Sanjayan From Changing Planet Coral Special

Renowned Conservationist Dr M Sanjayan From Changing Planet Coral Special

Featuring spectacular underwater photography, the third year of the seven-year Changing Planet series explores how scientists from across disciplines are collaborating on projects that offer glimmers of hope for the future of coral reefs. Globally, coral reefs are at a crisis point; warming seas have caused corals to bleach and die at an alarming rate. Five hundred million people worldwide rely on reefs for food and to protect coastlines from storms and rising sea levels. But without action, scientists predict that nearly all reefs could die off in the next few decades.

In the U.S., Florida has the third largest barrier reef in the world, but it has lost an alarming 98% of its coral. But innovative techniques are helping restore coral reefs. From "Coral IVF" to building hybrid, ready-made reefs to using fish vocalizations to lure coral larvae, Dr. Sanjayan can talk about what scientists are doing around the world to improve the fate of corals.

Dr. M. Sanjayan is a conservation scientist and chief executive officer of Conservation International, an organization working primarily in the Global South to secure nature for humanity. Most recently, he was named to the inaugural TIME 100 list of climate leaders, which noted his ability to forge powerful partnerships for environmental protection and restoration. He has hosted more than a dozen award-winning documentaries from PBS, BBC, National Geographic, Discovery, Showtime, and Vox Media.

The Daily Mess Mislabeled Mental Folders

The Daily Mess Mislabeled Mental Folders

Putting ourselves in the right frame of mind requires compartmentalizing. Not an easy walk. I envision it being like the computer folders where we store data. The first step is always giving the folder a name. I've always treated them like book titles. The items in the computer folder should be connected to the information stored. I believe we do it mentally. We store our emotions and dreams inside folders with book title names and can never relocate them. Putting ourselves in the right frame of mind means taking the secrecy out of the reason why a folder was made. Call out your folder for what it is.

Food Author And Scientist Rob Dunn From Curiosity Streams Taste The Flavor Of Life

Food Author And Scientist Rob Dunn From Curiosity Streams Taste The Flavor Of Life

Every living thing must solve an equation. How much nitrogen to eat, how much sodium, how much phosphorus, etc. The body solves that equation by taste and flavor -- by making living things crave what they need. Our appetites are linked to nutritional requirements. Taste: The Flavor of Life, a new docuseries on Curiosity Stream, explores the world of taste and how deliciousness unites us with the rest of animals in surprising ways.
For example -- Organisms need salt for their cells to function properly. If a food has salt, the taste receptor sends a signal to the brain, creating pleasure. The umami taste receptor rewards animals for finding nitrogen, an element that’s essential for building proteins and genes. Sweet taste receptors encourage animals to find foods with enough sugar to fuel their daily activity. Taste: The Flavor of Life traces the impact of taste from animals’ first steps on land to top Michelin star restaurants!
Taste: The Flavor of Life comes from biologist Rob Dunn and is inspired by his book Delicious – The Evolution of Flavor and How It Made Us Human (co-written by Monica Sanchez). A Professor at NC State University, Rob leads the Public Science Lab, a group of scholars from diverse disciplines who work to make new discoveries about daily life. His research has been awarded more than ten million dollars in grants from more than twelve different sources for work in 20 different countries. An avid writer, Rob has published many articles in National Geographic, the New York Timesthe Wall Street Journal among many others, as well as seven books including The Wild Life of Our Bodies and A Natural History of the Future.

#1 R&B Drummer In The World Zoro Releases The Book Maria's Scarf

#1 R&B Drummer In The World Zoro Releases The Book Maria's Scarf

Blackstone Publishing announces the forthcoming release of Zoro's book, MARIA'S SCARF: A MEMOIR OF A MOTHER'S LOVE, A SON'S PERSEVERANCE, AND DREAMING BIG . A beautiful and transformative memoir, Maria's Scarf is the incredible story of a mother's love, a family's unbreakable bond, and a starry eyed boy who never lost sight of his dreams.

As the fatherless biracial child of a Mexican immigrant, Danny Donnelly was never expected to amount to much. Before the age of nine, his single mother had moved her seven children more than thirty times-from the impoverished streets of South Central Los Angeles to rural Oregon and everywhere in between.

Sometimes there was no home to go to, so they slept in their '62 Chevy; sometimes dinner was a slice of bread; sometimes they showered in a nearby park. Desperate yet ever hopeful, they clung to the only thing they had-each other. Through it all, Danny longed for his father's love and approval, ultimately channeling his pain and transforming himself into Zoro, one of the world's greatest drummers.

Eloquent, hilarious, and remarkably tender, Maria's Scarf: A Memoir of a Mother's Love, a Son's Perseverance, and Dreaming Big, tells the story of a family fighting for survival against almost insurmountable odds.

Through laughter, tears, and many misadventures, Zoro's autobiography touches the heart of every reader-young or old, citizen or immigrant-and speaks to the dreamer in all of us, emboldening everyone to live fantazmical lives.

Author Wesley Moore A Southern Storyteller Igniting Your Imagination With Today Oh Boy

Author Wesley Moore A Southern Storyteller Igniting Your Imagination With Today Oh Boy

What would a novel that takes place on a singular day in a 1970 southern high school look like?

“Ferris Bueller meets Ulysses” is how author Wesley Moore III’s wife, Caroline, jokingly summarizes his debut novel, Today, Oh Boy.

Today, Oh Boy shares with Joyce’s masterpiece a plethora of well-developed characters Both novels utilize the omniscient point-of-view so that the all-knowing narrator can enter the consciousness of various characters yet provide panoramic overviews of the hustle and bustle of Dublin and Summerville High School.

The book offers, on the one hand, a time-capsule look at a world gone by – segregation, Vietnam War, and hitchhiking – and on the other hand, offers a realistic depiction of contemporary high school youth grappling with life’s issues, from the serious to the humorous.

Ben Dusing From Free Store At The Front Kherson Ukraine Episode Four The Calling

The geography speaks for itself. The bad guys are just kilometers away, across the river. We are the only international (or locals) with a brick and mortar office downtown, for them to go for help. No assistance from govt unless elderly, and the assistance they get is shit.
Office safe from “normal” shelling (tank fire, most mortars). Glide bombs and attack drones are new since Ukrainians landed on other side and have beachhead. Quietly, that is a total massacre over there — poorly kept secret here. can’t do much about the big stuff … if we get hit with a glide bomb we’re fucked. I like our chances.
Mon wed Friday the FREE STORE AT THE FRONT is open at our office. Basic foods medicines hygiene and winter clothes. Mondays we run bread into insanely dangerous places by the Antonivky bridge, do other stuff like that. Off the radar. For city admin. We are an important “off the books asset” for them.

Play It Forward Episode 623 Ambassador And Former Senate Staffer Ira Shapiro Updates The Betrayal

Thank you for being part of the conversation.  This is Play It Forward.  Real people.  Real stories.  The struggle to Play It Forward Episode 623 with U.S. Ambassador Ira Shapiro the author of The Betrayal How Mitch McConnell and the Senate Republicans Abandoned America.

The Founding Fathers gave the U.S. Senate many functions, but it had one fundamental responsibility—its raison d’etre: to provide the check against a dangerous president who threatened our democracy. Two hundred and thirty years later, when Donald Trump, a potential authoritarian, finally reached the White House, the Senate should have served as both America’s first and last lines of defense. Instead, we had the nightmare scenario: today’s Senate, reduced through a long period of decline to a hyper-partisan, gridlocked shadow of its former self, was unable to meet its fundamental responsibility.

Shapiro documents the pivotal challenges facing the Senate during the Trump administration, arguing that the body’s failure to provide leadership represents the most catastrophic failure of government in American history. The last section of the book covers the Senate’s performance during President Biden’s first year in office and looks forward to the 2022 Senate elections and beyond.

Billy Alexander From YYNOT Releases His Debut Solo Album Rock n Roll Diary

Billy Alexander From YYNOT Releases His Debut Solo Album Rock n Roll Diary

After racking up countless road miles on tour with his band YYNOT, John Waite and Anna Nalick, producing, writing, and recording for various artists, and having two Billboard charting songs with his band Feel, Billy Alexander is set to deliver his debut solo album Rock & Roll Diary in 2024.

The first taste of what’s to come is the song and video release for “Hammer Of The Gods”.

See the video here: https://youtu.be/NbvD8hr56jc

When asked about the song Alexander explains, “Hammer Of The Gods” is a salute to some of the bands of the 70’s who went big and bold. Re-shaping rock by allowing their imaginations and musical skills to take them to new places. Not afraid to experiment with new sounds, and arrangements or write more intellectual pieces. Critics of the time often calling them “self-indulgent” while I call it adventurous.

His upcoming debut album Rock & Roll Diary is a nine-song-set that covers the full spectrum of rock n’ roll genres. “After writing and producing three albums for my band YYNOT and years of writing for other artists, I started writing a batch of songs with no aim or intention other than just to write for myself. The songs were shaping themselves up to be a kind of reflection of my early influences and inspirational bands and artists from my youth and beyond. Some progressive rock and others more classic rock. Hints of Rush, Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, Tom Petty, The Beatles, and others were creeping into my creative process more and more,” shares Alexander.

He continues, “When it came time to start putting the songs together in the studio, I felt even more liberated to just make a record in the spirit of the ones that lit my fire as a young teen and helped shape me as a guitarist, songwriter, and musician. Yet, I didn’t just go for an obvious “retro” vibe as I’m still very much into the here and now in terms of current influences and growth in all areas. As much as this record is a celebration of my rock and roll heroes, at its core it’s my story. But hopefully a story many others can relate to. My goal was to make a modern-classic Rock and Roll record similar to the ones I love”.

Historian Erika Lee And Newbery Honor Author Christina Soontornvant Made In Asian America

From three-time Newbery Honoree Christina Soontornvat and award-winning historian Erika Lee comes a middle grade nonfiction that shines a light on the generations of Asian Americans who have transformed the United States and who continue to shape what it means to be American.

It begins centuries before America even exists as a nation. It is connected to the histories of Western conquest and colonialism. It’s a story of migration; of people and families crossing the Pacific Ocean in search of escape, opportunity, and new beginnings.

It is also the story of race and racism. Of being labeled an immigrant invasion, unfit to become citizens, and being banned, deported, and incarcerated. Of being blamed for bringing diseases into the country.

It is also a story of bravery and hope. It is the story of heroes who fought for equality in the courts, on the streets, and in the schools, and who continue to fight in solidarity with others doing the same.

This book is a stirring account of the ordinary people and extraordinary acts that made Asian America and the young people who are remaking America today.

Actor Producer Comic Book Creator David Dastmalchian From The Movie Late Night With The Devil

The horror movie Late Night With the Devil, already seen as one of the best of 2024 so far, is in theaters now and will be streaming on Shudder starting April 19th.

The below trailer for Late Night With the Devil is packed with rave reviews, with positive comments from both Stephen King and Kevin Smith notably featured in it.

King raves that the film is "absolutely brilliant," adding that he couldn't take his eyes off it. Smith, meanwhile, comments, "I love it. It's Rosemary's Baby meets Network."

David Dastmalchian (Dune, The Suicide Squad) stars as the host of a late-night talk show that descends into a nightmare in the Ghostwatch and WNUF Halloween Special-inspired film. IFC Films & Shudder released Late Night with the Devil theatrically on March 22 before it heads to Shudder exclusively on April 19, 2024.

David Dastmalchian stars as Jack Delroy, the charismatic host of "Night Owls," and the film traces the ill-fated taping of a live Halloween special in 1977 plagued by a demonic presence.

The energetic and innovative feature hails from Australian writing-directing team Colin and Cameron Cairnes (100 Bloody Acres, Scare Campaign).

The film premiered last year at SXSW. Meagan wrote in her review out of the fest, Late Night with the Devil captures the chaotic energy of a late night show, embracing the irreverent comedy and stress of live television with a pastiche style. It's a clever trojan horse for a surprising horror movie that goes full throttle on unhinged demonic mayhem.

"The ingenuity, the painstaking period recreation, a riveting performance by Dastmalchian, and a showstopper of a finale make for one Halloween event you won't want to miss."

Spooky Pictures founders Roy Lee (It, The Grudge, The Ring) and Steven Schneider (Pet Sematary, Paranormal Activity, Insidious), Derek Dauchy ("Al Kameen") and Future Pictures' Mat Govoni ("Lone Wolf") and Adam White ("Lone Wolf") and John Molloy are all producing.

Joel Anderson (Lake Mungo), Rami Yasin, and David Dastmalchian executive produce.

The Man With All That Hair Asher Havon From Season 25 Of NBC's The Voice

Growing up in Selma, Ala., Asher was surrounded by gospel singers. President Obama went to Selma in 2015 for a speech commemorating the 50th anniversary of the 1965 march from Selma to Montgomery in honor of African-American civil rights. Asher auditioned for a spot in the choir that was set to perform John Legend's song "Glory." The choir director was so blown away by Asher that Asher led the choir that day, performing in front of 200,000 people. This was also a turning point for his relationship with his father, whom he's always had a complicated relationship with. A couple of years ago, his father survived a car accident and their relationship grew even stronger. They now talk regularly and he greatly supports Asher's music. It was Asher's mom who really pushed him to sing when he was young. He likes to call her his singing sergeant and is excited to make her proud on "The Voice."

Stream Thinking When It's Ok To Not Be Our Best

When it's ok to not be our best. We ache, we break, we slow down and say weird stuff at the wrong time. It's part of being who we are and where we are! I don't want to miss out on the several stages of a real life. Sadly I can't pick up my daily writing of 30 years and help the struggling artist. To offer hope and peace in his moments of question and challenge. Being wiser in life requires those battles an lost moments. There can be no change, only a willingness to live.

Rock n Roll Hall Of Fame's Robert Kool Bell From Kool And The Gang

Rock n Roll Hall Of Fame's Robert Kool Bell From Kool And The Gang

For over fifty years, Kool & the Gang have been essential innovators of funk, soul, disco, and R&B, creating rock & roll's most danceable anthems. They are one of the grooviest and most sampled bands of all time, with a recognizable sound that resonates across generations and has brought joy to millions of fans around the globe.

Kool & the Gang took their funky groove all the way to the top with a mix of pop songwriting, fantastic vocals, and a killer horn section. Formed in Jersey City, New Jersey, in 1964, brothers Robert "Kool" and Ronald Bell got their start in clubs, mastering a repertoire of jazz standards and Motown covers. In 1969, they signed to newly formed De-Lite Records and released the up-tempo instrumental "Kool & the Gang." They subsequently released two live albums showcasing their ability to produce brilliantly crafted songs and blistering jams over an infectious beat. Their big break came in 1973 with the album Wild and Peaceful, which leaned deep into funky grooves, horn arrangements, and chanted vocals on the songs "Funky Stuff," "Jungle Boogie," and "Hollywood Swinging" - three instant dance floor classics. They slid easily into the growing disco scene, with their "Open Sesame" featured on the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack.

In the 1980s, Kool & the Gang added lead vocalist James "J.T." Taylor and released two massive hits, the bumping "Ladies Night" and the smooth "Too Hot." With this, they accomplished something rare in the music industry - maintaining the fans who loved their funky roots, while reaching an entirely new audience tuned into their growing pop sensibilities. In 1980, they blew the roof off with the international hit "Celebration" and produced nineteen charting singles during the decade.

Kool & the Gang's impact cannot be understated - from the throwback grooves of Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars to the inclusion of the group's songs in almost every party playlist. Countless samples of their music laid the foundation for some of hip-hop's biggest hits by artists including Eric B. & Rakim, Tupac, Lil' Kim, and JAY-Z.

The Daily Mess Making Your Presence Known Without Being An Emotional Vampire

Making your presence known begins with you.  If you don't recognize yourself in the mirror how do you expect others to play along?  We spend too much time depending on coworkers, family and friends to pick us up.  Emotional vampires and or wet blankets.  Which isn't a good thing because a wet blanket can smell moldy.  Making a presence through awareness.  To be in fully in touch with yourself and not another human's supply of energy.

Singer Songwriter Olivia Rubini From Season 25 Of NBC's The Voice

As the daughter of a music producer and drummer, Olivia grew up taking naps in guitar cases, playing around on piano keys and singing in vocal booths. At age 5, she wrote and recorded her first single, "If I Could Fly." At 13, she wanted to start taking it seriously and asked her dad to be her producer. They continued to record together through her teen years, and in 2021 she released her first album, "Silhouettes." While her parents supported her musical dreams, they emphasized the importance of education. During college, Olivia explored international relations & political science. However, music remained her priority. Along with music, Olivia has an eye for thrift shopping and anything '70s is her vibe, which aligns with her love for that era's music. She takes inspiration from artists such as Linda Ronstadt, Led Zeppelin and the Rolling Stones.

Hollywood Intimacy Coordinator Brooke Haney Yes There's A Guidebook For Stage And Screen

Hollywood Intimacy Coordinator Brooke Haney Yes There's A Guidebook For Stage And Screen

Intimacy Coordinator Reveals How Sex Scenes Are Staged and How Actors Are Protected!

From Basic Instinct to Call Me by Your Name, Coming Home to Fifty Shades of Grey, P-Valley to Outlander, sex scenes play a vital role in movies, TV shows, and plays spanning genres and subjects. Yet, as dramas and comedies increasingly reflect the reality of diversity, depicting acts of intimacy in a way that's genuine, affecting, free from entrenched stereotypes, and respectful to audiences and actors is a challenge.

In The Intimacy Coordinator's Guidebook: Specialties for Stage and Screen (Routledge; April 1, 2024; Original Trade Paperback; ISBN: 978‑1‑032‑53147‑2), Brooke M. Haney reveals how intimacy coordinators use their cultural competencies and specialties in practice to create the most compelling storytelling.

As Haney stresses, the job requires competency in the language of choreography - every move performed for the camera or a live audience, from a passionate kiss to a chilling assault, is meticulously choreographed, just like a dance or a fight scene - along with training in tools like modesty garments and props. In addition, an intimacy coordinator must possess excellent communication skills and the ability to read situations and respond proactively. What's more, every intimacy coordinator must find their unique lens. (For instance, some coordinators are specialists in bondage, whereas others are specialists working with minors.)

The book features other intimacy coordinators' stories. It includes conversations with Olivia Luccardi (a producer and actress who played Melissa in The Deuce, the first television show to employ an intimacy coordinator), Tai Leshaun (a Black actress in Thunder Force and The Other Black Girl), Becca Blackwell (a trans actor, performer and writer), Jimmy Smits (an Emmy Award-winning Latino actor known for roles in TV dramas from NYPD Blue to Sons of Anarchy) and other Hollywood insiders who have worked on projects involving intimacy.
