Radio Free Arthur - Episode 24 - A Swift Conclusion

Radio Free Arthur - Episode 24 - A Swift Conclusion

Happy Tortured Poets Department release day to all who celebrate! Having listened to all two hours of the extended "Anthology" edition of this most recent emission from the Queen of jet-setting herself the editors get down and dirty in the lyrical content of the album.

What is revealed and how deep is the poetic material at hand? Tune in to find out in this thrilling conclusion to this season of Radio Free Arthur.

If Sebastian, Abby, and Evan keep their jobs for another year (and Trent Radio allows it) they promise to be back riding the airwaves before you're able to get a response back from the CRTC.

Radio Free Arthur - Episode 23 - Trainsgender Day of Visibility

It's a very special occassion at Radio Free Arthur enterprises Inc. L.L.C., a subsidiary of CSIS (allegedly)—and not for any reason to do with recent celestial phenomena!

This episode marks co-editor Abbigale Kernya's very first absence from RFA! Sad!

However, it is also another cause for celebration: it's our very own Evan Robins' one (but not only) birthday!!! Yay!!!

In celebration of this much-lauded occassion, she and Sebastian spend the bulk of this hour indulging in a perennial topic of Evan's obsession—public transportation and engineering disasters.

Sebastian shares his experiences commuting to and from Toronto, and Evan relays her near-miss flying on a Boeing 737 MAX 8.

The moral of the story, dear listener? Trains. Always trains.

Radio Free Arthur - Episode 20 - Et tu, Union?

All three Arthur Editors are (allegedly) back in the studio and ready to face the Ides of March. With Evan and Sebastian both recovering from an (alleged) curse, the Editors bring a portent of prophetic significance: DON'T FORGET TO VOTE!

That's right, dear listener, student union elections are upon us, and along with them one of the most significant decisions you can (allegedly) make! This is the time YOU can make YOUR voice heard in the organization that represents YOU (unless you want to elect a President because they're actually just going to arbitrarily appoint someone instead) [allegedly]!

In the words of our co-editor who has been playing too much Helldivers 2 (guess which one): "Democracy!"

Should you be at a loss for who to vote for, Arthur's got you covered. Listen on to hear our endorsement of each and every TCSA candidate, our respective tales of driving woe, and a soft-launch from our own Evan Robins about her decisions to further her emotional stunting by remaining in higher education (albeit to the tune of a fair amount of money).

Radio Free Arthur - Episode 10 - Fifty Nine Minutes of Possibility

Closing out the season on Trent Radio, Abbigale, Evan, and Sebastian drag their exhausted bodies into the studio for one last kick at the can to reflect upon the season and how they're feeling after publishing the last print edition of 2023.

After Evan discusses the newest garbageface album, ENANTIODROMIA - set to be released on December 21st - key questions arise among the editors concerning the plans for future reproduction and what they would name their prospective spawn before suggesting that the roundabout to nowhere at Cleantech Commons is Peterborough's best new hook-up spot.

These three are never beating the polycule accusations.

If you're worried about not hearing from the editors for the next few weeks, have no fear! They're cooking up something good - and they need your help! Send in your festive greetings to be included in a special holiday-themed episode set to air later on in December.

Mailed cards get priority but email works too!

Currents x Arthur Budget Week 2024 - Ep. 2 - Non-profits plead with councillors to reverse proposed cut to municipal grants. The cost to taxpayers? Less than $1 each.

Will Pearson, Evan Robins and Sebastian Johnston-Lindsay sit down to discuss the latest on the 2024 Peterborough City Budget news. Last week, representatives from a variety of community groups addressed city councillors on Tuesday, November 14 to ask councillors to reverse a proposed cut to the municipal grants they receive.

Peterborough’s draft budget proposes cutting the Community Service Grants it gives to 14 local non-profits by between 3.5 percent and 5.2 percent in 2024. The Community Service Grant program provides funding to non-profits that deliver programs to improve the quality of life for residents in Peterborough, according to the city’s budget documents.

Representatives from many of the groups facing the cutback — including the New Canadians Centre, Peterborough GreenUP, and Artspace — were present at the November 14 finance committee meeting to ask councillors to reverse the proposed cutback when they debate the budget starting on November 20.

If the grant cuts to the 14 non-profits are approved, the city would spend $29,132 less on all the groups combined next year compared to 2023. That works out to savings of $0.67 for the median household in the city.

Meanwhile, at the November 15 2023 finance committee meeting, Chief of Police Stuart Betts made the case for a 15.3 percent increase to the police budget for 2024 — that increase would cost the median residential taxpayer $106 more next year.

We cover these two stories and more in the latest episode of our 2024 Budget Podcast, which Arthur is producing in collaboration with Peterborough Currents.

Radio Free Arthur - Episode 2 - Trent's Homecoming Woes and National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

This week Sebastian Johnston-Lindsay returns from his sick bed to join fellow Arthur editors, Abbigale Kernya, and Evan Robins to discuss the debauch of last week's Head of the Trent Homecoming weekend here in Peterborough/Nogojiwanong.

They discuss a recent article Abbigale wrote in which she interviewed Indigenous students about Trent's decision to move forward with hosting homecoming festivities on National Day for Truth and Reconciliation which takes place every year on September 30th.

Along the way, the editors dissect the tweets of one Peterborough Police Chief, Stu Betts, who seems oblivious to the reasons why students would appear so respectful when in the presence of a man with a gun in the middle of their party. He also publicly reminisced about parties in gravel pits and wistfully writes that "kids will be kids" while his Officers signed sudents' backs and took selfies.

Peterborough Politics Podcast - Episode 6 - Art Attack

Art is quite literally under attack in Peterborough as the community was not successful in appealing to City Council to reconsider funding The Theatre on King and the Artisans Centre. We talked about it at length. There was a really sad story concerning a 3-year-old girl who was killed in her own driveway by a reckless vehicle. Our condolences go out to the family. You can donate to the GoFundMe Page, here: https://www.gofundme.com/f/tragic-loss-in-peterborough Other things we talked about were Jeff Leal being on vacation and how their may be a double standard that is not afforded to women in politics. Saying Goodbye to Sandra Clancy. Michelle Ferreri being a capital "C" Conservative. Lastly, we quickly touched on Provincial funding for Derecho recovery and we reminisced about our respective Derecho experiences. Big shout out to Garbageface for supplying us with these bangers. The second is that we hosted our first guest on the show, Councillor Matt Crowley, who joined us to talk about his experience being a new City Councillor in Peterborough. Before we talked to Matt, we had the chance to go over the past Peterborough City Council meeting, which saw a slew of amendments to bylaws, some grants made out to the community, and the report from adviser Reem Ali about Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. One major topic was the switch to private guards, away from city staff and police, to enforce people living in tents. Thanks for listening.

Peterborough Politics Podcast - Episode 02 - Hot Garbage Takes

We're back at it again like clockwork for Episode 2 of the Peterborough Politics Podcast. This week we delved into the latest city council meeting, specifically about the deferral to add stronger language surrounding Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) to the community safety and well-being plan. We talked about delegations from Conservative MP Michelle Ferreri, former Mayor Diane Therrien, and former Councillor Stephen Wright. Next, we had some hot garbage takes about the new waste collection plan: clear bags, composting, and garbage pickup every other week. Lastly, we saved a little time for some drama we encountered around Drag Story Time. It was a busy week!

Growing Pains Ep. 3: A Culture You Can't Kill Part 2

Growing Pains Ep. 3: A Culture You Can't Kill Part 2

Growing Pains is an Arthur Newspaper podcast about the corporatization of Trent University and how it affects students, faculty, and the surrounding community. We want to tell you the story of how this small, collegial, liberal arts university has grown into something else… something perhaps unrecognizable from its original form.

Part 2 of our episode about student activism is here! In Part one, we told you the story of how eight students occupied an administrator’s office at Trent University in 2001 to protest the undemocratic decision to sell off Peter Robinson College.

Now, we’re going to analyze these events, and bring this conversation into the present to ask, what has happened to Trent student activism in the two decades since? We examine the structural factors that shape and constrain student autonomy, and talk about ways forward for the student movement today.

Thanks to Dr. David Tough, Dr. Alison Hearn, and Ziysah von Bieberstein for their stories and contributions to this episode.

Growing Pains Ep. 3: A Culture You Can't Kill Part 1

Growing Pains Ep. 3: A Culture You Can't Kill Part 1

Growing Pains is BACK! After a bit of an accidental hiatus, we have returned to bring you two episodes all about student activism. In Part 1, we revisit the events of 1999-2001 that we discussed in 'The Company Trent Keeps,' the closing of Peter Robinson College, the shifts in Trent's governance, the structural changes that are still playing out today -- but this time, from the students' perspective. Much of the radical, direct action based culture that once attracted students to Trent has faded over the 20 years since.

In Part 2 of this episode we try to answer this question of why? What happened to this culture of revolution, and can we revive it?

Thanks to Dr. David Tough, Dr. Alison Hearn, and Ziysah von Bieberstein for their stories and contributions to this episode.

Growing Pains Ep. 2: Bleeding Green

Growing Pains Ep. 2: Bleeding Green

Growing Pains is an Arthur Newspaper podcast about the corporatization of Trent University and how it affects students, faculty, and the community in which our university lies. We want to tell you the story of how this small, collegial, liberal arts university has grown into something else… something perhaps unrecognizable from its original form.

In this episode, 'Bleeding Green', we unpack Trent's Cleantech Commons development project and how it typifies the marriage between academy and industry on our campus. We sit down with former Cultural Studies professor, Andrew Wernick, to talk about the promotional university, and the project of branding. We also chat with Cleantech Executive Director, Martin Yuill, about what it means to attract the right kind of business. Ultimately, we explain how and why Peterborough's most wealthy have their hands in Trent Lands.

Growing Pains Ep. 1: The Company Trent Keeps

Growing Pains is an Arthur Newspaper podcast about the corporatization of Trent University and how it affects students, faculty, and the community in which our university lies. We want to tell you the story of how this small, collegial, liberal arts university has grown into something else… something perhaps unrecognizable from its original form.

In our first episode, ‘The Company Trent Keeps,’ we break down Trent’s Board of Governors and attempt to explain how and why a small group of corporate elites make all the most important decisions at our university. Dr. David Tough takes us on a walk down memory lane to help us piece together how we got here, and how we might imagine a more democratic way forward.
