A Tiger in the Zoo

A Tiger in the Zoo

The poem depicts the condition of a tiger in the concrete cell of a zoo. The poem can be divided into three parts. In the first stanza the poet shows the helplessness of the tiger in the cage of a zoo. In the second and the third stanzas the poet tries to reveal the tiger in his natural habitat of a jungle. In the last two stanzas again the poet takes the reader to the cage of the zoo. The tiger is alone, behind bars there.

The Laburnum Top by Ted Hughes

The poet has captured the relation of birds with a tree beautifully in the poem. Before the goldfinch comes the Laburnum tree is silent. After its arrival the tree becomes 'the engine of their family'. Again with the departure of the birds it 'subsides to empty'.
