Supporting Our Kids In Regulating Their Emotions

Supporting Our Kids In Regulating Their Emotions

FULL TRANSCIPT

Understanding Triggers:

We all have triggers, those moments when our kids' behavior mirrors our own childhood struggles. It might resonate with experiences of not being heard or understood. Understanding these triggers is the first step in helping both ourselves and our kids manage emotions effectively.

The Long-Haul of Emotional Regulation:

Contrary to popular belief, emotional support doesn't end with the teenage years. The prefrontal cortex, our emotional control center, continues developing into our early 20s. Hence, our role as guides in emotional regulation extends well beyond adolescence.

Tips for Parents:

  1. Pick Your Battles: Choose your moments wisely, especially when your child has had a challenging day. Avoid unnecessary battles, particularly around the dinner table.
  2. Pick Your Timings: Respect your child's activities and give them fair warning before interrupting. Check their basic needs and create a supportive environment.
  3. Get Close: Physical proximity helps regulate their nervous system. Match your calmness with their energy, whether by picking them up or simply standing close.
  4. Connect: After an emotional outburst, give your child 30 to 45 minutes for their nervous system to reset. Connect with them, understand their feelings, and discuss consequences once they are calmer.

Stages of Emotional Regulation:

  1. Identify Emotions: Encourage labeling emotions for themselves and others. Share your feelings to extend their emotional literacy.
  2. Recognize Triggers: Help them identify what upsets them. Validate their feelings and provide insights into their emotional responses.
  3. Teach Self-Regulation: Introduce concepts like the hand model of the brain or other age-appropriate metaphors. Guide them in understanding and regulating their emotions.

Top Tips for Kids' Emotional Regulation:

  • Regular Exercise: Disperse stress hormones and provide opportunities for social interaction outside the regular friend circle.
  • Breathing Exercises: Inhale through the nose, exhale through the mouth. Quick and effective in calming the fight-or-flight response.
  • Create a List: Collaborate on a list of activities they can do when upset. Options can include exercise, listening to music, or chatting with friends.
  • Meditation: Introduce simple meditative practices like focused breathing or engaging in calming activities.
  • Artistic Outlets: Drawing, sketching, or coloring engages a different part of the brain, promoting emotional regulation.

Conclusion: Emotional regulation is a lifelong journey. By understanding, supporting, and teaching our kids to navigate their emotions, we equip them with essential life skills. Remember, it's not just about the present but also future-proofing their mental and physical well-being.

Regulating Our Own Emotions

Regulating Our Own Emotions

FULL TRANSCTIPT - https://s3.membervaultcdn.com/theresilientpeople/Transcript---Regulating-Our-Own-Emotions.pdf?v=1701942991

Hello, and welcome back to the Resilient Kid podcast

with me, Ashley Costello, psychotherapist of over 25 years. Today, we're going to talk about emotional regulation, but focusing on our emotional regulation as parents.

Emotional Regulation

Emotional regulation involves controlling the intensity of an emotional experience, dialing it down to ensure it's within our control. Building these skills not only positively impacts our mental health but also the relationships around us. As parents, our role is to regulate our kids' emotions by guiding them through what's happening, given that we have fully developed brains. But first, we need to regulate ourselves.

Reasons for Triggers

Childhood Triggers: Sometimes, triggers stem from our own childhood experiences, bringing up old feelings that may not be directly related to our kids' behavior.

Parenting Reflection: Feeling triggered can also be a reflection of our own parenting skills, often influenced by the judgment we perceive from others during challenging situations.

Addressing Triggers

Identify Triggers: Take time to identify triggers by reflecting on situations that cause stress or loss of temper. Write them down for clarity.

Listen to Your Body: Pay attention to physical signs of stress, such as clenched fists, sweating, or overthinking, as they can help identify when you feel under threat.

Name Your Emotions: Naming the emotions you're experiencing helps develop emotional literacy and facilitates communication.

Take Time Out: Communicate with your kids about needing time to calm down. Acknowledge your emotions and give yourself the space to respond thoughtfully.

Deep Breathing: Engage in deep breathing exercises, inhaling through the nose and exhaling through the mouth, to quickly calm the fight-and-flight response.

Additional Tips

- Be kind to yourself and make amends if needed.

- Consider taking up exercise to move stress hormones out of the body.

- Water and nature are powerful stress relievers; spend time outdoors and use cool water on your wrists to regulate emotions.

- Fill up your own cup by connecting with friends and family, ensuring you have resources and capacity to support your children.

Conclusion

Regulating our own emotions is crucial for effective parenting. Focusing on identifying triggers, listening to our bodies, and implementing strategies like deep breathing and self-care can make a significant impact. Remember to fill up your own cup so you can better support your kids emotionally.

Closing Remarks

I hope you found these insights valuable. In the next episode, we'll delve into kids' emotional regulation. As we approach the holiday season, take care and fill up your cup. Best of luck and lots of love from my family to yours. Until next time, take care!

Advocating For Your Child in School

Advocating For Your Child in School

FULL TRANSCRIPT

School can evoke various emotions and memories for all of us. It's essential to recognize the associations we have with school and understand our role in advocating for our children.

Despite the expertise of teachers and school staff in education, you are the true expert when it comes to your child.

Top Tips for Advocating for Your Child Write Down Your Thoughts: Before approaching the school, articulate what you need and prioritize your concerns. Break it down into bullet points for clarity.

Prioritize Issues: Focus on one main issue at a time to ensure effective communication. You can address other concerns later.

Clearly Express Expectations: Clearly communicate what you expect from the school. Whether it's extra reading support, addressing bullying, or specific accommodations, make it known.

Provide Evidence: Schools operate on evidence-based approaches. Back up your concerns with examples and evidence to facilitate understanding and action.

Speak to Someone You Trust: Choose the right person to speak to, whether it's the form teacher, head of year, or another trusted figure in the school.

Ask Questions Liberally: Don't hesitate to ask as many questions as needed. This ensures you have a comprehensive understanding of the situation and potential solutions.

Show Emotion Respectfully: It's okay to show emotion, but maintain professionalism. Expressing your concerns emotionally can often create a stronger connection.

Ask for Extra Help: Inquire about additional support services such as Emotional Literacy Support Assistant (ELSA) training or Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCO) assistance.

Keep Speaking Up: Regularly communicate with the school, ask for accountability, and follow up on requested actions. Establish an ongoing dialogue.

Advocating for Neurodiverse Children If you suspect your child may be neurodiverse, the approach is similar but with some nuanced differences.

Contact the Teacher and SENCO: Initiate a conversation with the teacher and Special Educational Needs Coordinator to discuss your observations.

Write Down Observations: Clearly articulate what you're seeing and experiencing. This provides a solid foundation for discussions and potential interventions.

Gather Evidence: Encourage the school to observe your child's behavior and report back. Evidence is crucial, especially if you're considering an official assessment.

SEN Pathway: Understand the Special Educational Needs (SEN) pathway at the school. This includes a banding document that outlines the support available.

Pediatric Referral: If needed, the evidence gathered can contribute to a pediatric referral for an official diagnosis and further support.

Unseen Support Staff: Explore the support of unseen heroes like family support workers and school nurses. They can provide valuable insights and assistance.

Closing Thoughts You are the expert on your child. Reach out to the available experts in the school system to ensure your child receives the best support possible.

Don't forget about the unsung heroes in the school, like family support workers and school nurses.

Reach out if you need support or have questions. You're doing an amazing job advocating for your kid!

In this episode, host Ashley Costello, a psychotherapist and author, explores various archetypes of children and teens who display low resilience. She discusses how recognizing these traits can help parents and educators better understand and support their children in building resilience.

Archetype 1: The Perfectionist

Perfectionist children fear failure and have high expectations.

They may become overwhelmed and frustrated when things don't go perfectly.

This can lead to limiting opportunities and avoiding challenges.

Archetype 2: The Comfort Zone Seeker

These children fear success and are concerned about how others view their achievements.

They may avoid trying hard and prefer not to stand out.

The fear of isolation from peers is a common concern.

Archetype 3: The Critic

Kids in this category often engage in negative self-talk.

They may criticize themselves about various aspects, including school subjects and friendships.

Encouraging them to focus on evidence and not commenting on appearance can be helpful.

Archetype 4: The Projector

Projector kids tend to blame others for their problems or mistakes.

They may avoid taking responsibility and use blame as a defense mechanism.

Sometimes, they fear embarrassment and want to appear as experts.

Archetype 5: The Conservative

Conservative children resist change and prefer routine.

They may struggle with confidence and need to know what to expect.

Transitions can be challenging for them, leading to meltdowns.

Archetype 6: The Worrier

These kids worry excessively about a wide range of topics, often out of their control.

Anxiety can escalate quickly if not managed.

Building emotional regulation skills is essential for resilience.

Archetype 7: The Sensitive

Sensitive children are highly attuned to their surroundings and can become easily overwhelmed.

They may cry or react strongly to sensory stimuli.

Acknowledging their needs and providing tools for emotional expression is vital.

The episode emphasizes the importance of recognizing these archetypes, understanding each child's unique needs, and helping them build resilience. Resilience, like confidence, grows when children are given the tools to face challenges and overcome them.

Welcome back to The Resilient Kid Podcast! I'm your host, Ashley Costello, a psychotherapist with over 25 years of experience working with children, adolescents, and adults. Today, we'll discuss an important trait: tenacity, and how we can nurture it in our children.

About My Clients

I work with clients of all ages, from 5 to 83.

My current clients are divided into three groups: school-aged children, university students (via Zoom), and adults supporting families.

My Approach to Therapy

I value confidentiality, but I also believe in sharing information with parents or teachers when it can help the child.

Sometimes, I conduct sessions with parents to guide them on supporting their child effectively.

Building Tenacity: Real-Life Example

A real-life story from the weekend involving my 16-year-old daughter, who plays rugby.

Despite a knee injury during a trial for the Irish women's rugby team, my daughter displayed remarkable tenacity.

She wanted to seize the opportunity and didn't give up, even after being offered multiple times to go home.

I emphasized the importance of not shying away from discomfort and taking calculated risks.

The Role of Parents

As parents, we often want to shield our children from discomfort, but sometimes it's essential to let them face challenges.

Encouraging independence and walking them through uncomfortable situations helps build resilience.

It's crucial to let our children learn and grow, even if it means dealing with temporary discomfort.

Conclusion and How to Reach Out

Remember to embrace discomfort and encourage tenacity in your kids.

If you have questions or topics you'd like us to cover, feel free to reach out.

Thank you for listening to The Resilient Kid Podcast. Don't forget to check out my book, "A Parent's Guide to Raising a Resilient Kid," available on Amazon and through local bookshops worldwide. Take care, and let's continue building resilience in our children together!

Ashley begins by sharing her personal experience of navigating parenting with her husband, highlighting their varying approaches to discipline and routines. She discusses how their diverse family backgrounds and upbringing shaped their parenting perspectives.

The episode emphasizes the importance of parents aligning their expectations and understanding the type of behavior they want to encourage or discourage in their children. Ashley introduces a practical exercise to help parents get on the same page regarding family values and boundaries.

Key Takeaways from the Episode:

Understanding Differences: Recognize that parents often have different parenting styles based on their upbringing, and that's okay.

Compromise is Key: Finding common ground and compromise is essential when parents have differing views on parenting.

Clear Communication: Use the "Want, Needs, and Non-Negotiables" exercise to clarify what behaviors you want to encourage, what is essential, and what is non-negotiable in your family.

Non-Negotiables: Identify non-negotiable rules that both parents agree on to maintain consistency in parenting.

Adaptability: Children are adaptable, and clear rules and boundaries help them feel secure.

Amelia Mayer TEDx Talk: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0nlcpVAAZ0k

Welcome back to the Resilient Kid podcast! I'm your host, Ashley Costello, a psychotherapist with over 25 years of experience. Today, we're diving deep into the crucial topics of connection and belonging and their significance for our children's resilience.

In this episode, we'll explore the profound impact of genuine human connection and the sense of belonging on our children's well-being and resilience.

The Power of Connection: Our lives thrive on real-life, physical connections. It's not just about social media; it's about the meaningful, face-to-face relationships that are essential for children's growth.

The Brain and Connection: Research shows that lack of social connection can hinder brain development, leading to potential risks like depression, anxiety, and learning difficulties.

Challenges of Connection: Busy lives can sometimes make it challenging for parents to fully connect with their children. Awareness is the first step toward improving this crucial aspect.

The Importance of Belonging: As kids approach adolescence, they naturally gravitate toward peer groups. However, it's vital for them to understand that they always have a safe and welcoming place within their family.

Amelia Mayer's TEDx Talk: Amelia Mayer's TEDx talk explores the idea of not just belonging but being claimed by at least one person, which is fundamental for children to feel safe, belong, and thrive.

Claiming Your Child: Let your children know without a doubt that they belong in the family unit. Start by actively listening to them and maintaining open communication, allowing them to share their thoughts without interruption.

Commit to Connection: Rather than focusing solely on material gifts, spending quality time and creating memorable experiences with your children strengthens your connection.

Model Good Friendship Skills: Parents should model healthy friendship behaviors, discussing both positive and negative aspects of friendships, helping children form healthy relationships.

Look Out for Their Connection Circle: Take an interest in your child's friends and other significant adults in their lives. Understanding their support system provides valuable insights.

That's a wrap for this episode of the Resilient Kid podcast. Stay connected with Ashley on social media and feel free to reach out with any questions. Be sure to visit her website for valuable resources and courses.

Teaching Financial Wellbeing to Kids

Teaching Financial Wellbeing to Kids

This weeks Resilient Kid Podcast is with the fantastic Michelle Nicole Phelps. We are talking all things Kids and Finance. We talk about the importance of teaching children all about money. How to equip them with the knowledge and skills they need to manage their money effectively now and in the future.

Michelle gives useful tips on how to talk to kids about money, whatever the age. How to get them to take financial responsibility and how to make it fun too. Ashley gives real life example with her kids, as you have come to expect and they both talk about the delayed gratification and its role in creating debt.

Michelle's Top Tips -

Start early Evidence tells us that children’s attitudes about money are well developed by the age of seven. So, incorporate learning about the world of money into your teaching from pre-school upwards.  Put learning into practice Providing kids with experiential learning has been shown to be most effective. So when we run workshops in school they mainly include the children playing games, with regular check-ins as a group to see what lessons are being learnt, and what ideas they can take into the next round of games.  Make the most of everyday events. Financial education can be particularly effective if it coincides with an opportunity for the young person to put it into practice. For example, more detailed learning about banks and saving could coincide with parents taking out a children's bank account.

Bullying Episode with Kids Author Sam Dean

Bullying Episode with Kids Author Sam Dean

I have a very special guest with me here today and that is Sam Dean.

So just to give you a little heads up before we introduce, Sam, you're here listening to the resilient podcast with me, Ashley Costello, psychotherapist of over 20 years as you all know if you listen well, less than hard, and today's episode is around bullying, and for Rosie it's real.

Well it's really prevalent at the moment, in society because we don't just see it in schools like we've always seen it but we're actually seeing it in the workplace. We're seeing it online, we're seeing it on social media and our children often can't get away from it, and so I came across this book, by some, and it was just a breath of fresh air because it really is a children's book, but it, it really addresses issues, but with such a funny and naughty feel to it, that you can't help but laugh, and it really gives us a sense of hope.

I think that's, you know, more than anything.

What a fabulous podcast with Author Sam Dean who tackles the very serious issue of bullying in his book Timothy & The Triplets Three. Sam talks about his own personal experience, as well as working with troubled children in South Africa and extensive years as a Samaritan. Along with Ashley, they give tips and hope to everyone who this issue effects.

And so I reached out and said, please, please come and talk to us about your children's book that you've wrote. And any very lovely dropped one off yesterday. So we'll do a competition.

We do that a little bit later, we'll tell you how you can win this signed, by the way, somebody that's just today, and he thinks your signature is just amazing. Like he's now trying to design his own signature. Can you see that everybody? How cool is that?

Emi joins us today, to talk about her new children's book "Don't go knocking at the the circus door" The themes look at body image and following your dreams. It is all set to the well know circus theme "Thunder & Blaze" tune (Emi gives a fab demo of how it should be read!)
