Like the sour cream pouch versus the sour cream tub - it’s just a few seconds carved off of how long it takes, but oh, how it makes my heart happy to open, squeeze, and put back.

And as a teacher, what do we overspend on to save time and make our teacher hearts happy? Amazon prime, pre cut letters, premade posters to use year after year, dollar store trips, the Crayola brand crayons, and all the TPT downloads!

What exactly is oneword? Many people have New Year’s resolutions, but how many of us really honor them for 365 days? The idea behind the one word movement is you choose one word that encapsulates or embodies your goals for the upcoming year. It can be for your professional goals, personal goals and of course a hybrid of both. It helps to focus or guide people as a reminder, and many have found success with identifying just one word.

The idea came from watching baking competition shows that my husband likes to watch
Deconstructed desserts
And watching Joelle transform her classroom repeatedly
I was wracking my brain because I want to think of something fun and creative that I could share
Then I started thinking about what it would look like if I did a classroom transformation
I don’t feel confident so I was thinking what if I had kids do the classroom transformation
This is where the deconstructed concept comes in
Teacher picks the theme
Allows for building background or focus on main topic
Students break into groups
Within group discussion on:
Learning target for standards/content area
Create the learning activity
Day of transformation, students rotate through learning activities and can participate in the activity they created or not
Students want to be engaged in their learning
Students want their friends to like the activity they planned
Teacher doesn’t have to pick the theme necessarily, but ensure that the theme is age-appropriate

A need for preservice teachers

Frequency: aim for 2x a month, but it depends on schedules

*What is one tip you could offer someone who is looking to develop their own podcast?
Number 1 thing is don’t stress about all the tech stuff. Just jump in and go. You’ll learn and figure things out as you go along, over time learn and grow and improve.

Joelle: Try reframing the hard year(s) as years of learning. Not every year is this difficult. Ashley: Remember that tomorrow always comes. Sometimes we just need it to be bedtime. Erin: Go ahead and look for other jobs. Looking doesn’t mean you have to apply.

Standards vs. Targets
Standards are what we want students to be able to know and do.
Targets are the “I can…” statements specific to the lesson/day.

*I’m getting a book published by EduMatch Publishing
*What was the inspiration for the book?
*I wanted other educators to know that they weren’t alone in their struggle to balance life with education, but my story would not appeal to everyone. I decided an anthology would be the best way for a variety of educators to tell their stories so that a more diverse audience would feel like they weren’t alone.
*What has the process been like so far?
*I’m in the very beginning. I submitted my idea, I’ve had a meeting with Dr. Sarah Thomas, and a meeting with Mandy Froehlich, the Director of Author Success. Now I’m gathering contributors to tell their stories.

What have been your experiences regarding expectations for lesson plans?
Ashley:
Reasonable expectations that allow for thoughtful lessons, but not overwhelming on details
Joelle:
Detailed plans allow for deeper thinking, and not necessary to look at again after that reflective process
Erin:
Good mix between basic requirements and extremely detailed

What do you need to do for lesson plans personally?
Ashley:
Still go through the components of a lesson, just in a different way
Joelle:
Rhythm with Saturday to rest and relax and Sunday is more thoughtful plan generate Erin: As an instructional coach, doesn’t have lesson plans

Our Story

It was before ISTE17 when Erin encouraged Joelle and I to submit proposals to present. We were all coworkers at the time, working at a Catholic school, with a shared desire to continue our own learning. It was super exciting when we each received the alert that our individual poster session proposals were accepted. We worked together to pack supplies, make copies, set up, tear down, take pictures, tweet out with the #ISTE17 - all of it! We were an awesome support to one another and that was the beginning of our beautiful relationship.

At ISTE17, we met some of the fantastic leaders of NCEA (National Catholic Educational Association) and they asked if we’d be interested in leading a series of webinars together. This successful collaboration led us to working together to present at district and state conferences in Nevada.

It was at CUENV last October where Dr. Randall Sampson had a conversation with Joelle and complemented our trio and how well we work together. We had that feeling, but to know that it was seen from an outsiders’ perspective was huge! He told Joelle that we had something special and to keep it going.

On the drive home from CUENV, we were all on Voxer and asked, “What if we started a podcast…?” And we were pretty much all in!

Then the planning came along - coming up with a unique concept, and a name, our love of PD but bite sized pieces of it, finding the balance between work and home - we had a lot to figure out, but we were creating something that we are proud to be a part of today.
