Asian Girl In A Western World aims to discuss and dismantle the stereotypes perpetrated against our community, bridge the gap between Eastern and Western culture, and show the rest of the world that Asian Americans are more complex than meets the eye. Having had similar experiences to many Asian Americans who struggled with connecting to their heritage while also trying to blend into American culture, our purpose is to help our community know and remember that they are loved that they should be proud to be who they are

EPISODE 63- The Struggles and Benefits of Intercultural Dating

Being in a relationship should be full of the utmost love and happiness. But for an Asian girl in the western world, sometimes being in a relationship can cause deeper problems, especially if you are dating someone who comes from a culture that is vastly different from yours. In this episode of Asian Girl In A Western World, Lulu and Yaya talk about the perks of dating outside of your culture/race, as well as some of the struggles that come with it.  Intro & Outro Music by Ramen the God Transition Music: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YpEkGyre7Tc https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IHjaqSJGCbM © 2022

EPISODE 55- Why Have People Stopped Talking About Anti-Asian Hate? (ft. Will Lex Ham)

Has anyone heard about anything related to the Stop Asian Hate movement lately? We haven't either. It's disappointing and frustrating to feel like we're just another social media trend. Our community is still getting attacked and it feels like no one knows or cares anymore. Why is this the case? And what can we do about it? In this episode of Asian Girl In A Western World welcome community organizer and humanist Will Lex Ham to answer these questions as well as talk about his own journey to becoming a frontline activist and offer YOU some ways to help keep up the momentum.

EPISODE 54- How It All Began (ft. Ramen the God)

It's been a year. One year of Asian Girl In A Western World? Can you believe it? You might know us for our banter, our long conversations, our Lucky 8 Times, or even our iconic pink and green. But have you ever wondered how we even had the idea to start this podcast? Why would two Asian girls from New York City decide to start a podcast in the middle of quarantine? In this one year anniversary special episode of Asian Girl In A Western World, Lulu and Yaya take you back in time to the early days of the podcast, discuss how they felt about starting it and what their biggest challenges were. EPISODE 52- Balancing Healthy Eating and Cultural Authenticity

Asian food- it's just full of MSG, preservatives, and who knows what else...it can't be good for you, right? Maybe...but what do you like to eat? Ask yourself- is it any healthier? Take a close look at those nutrition labels and ask yourself if the ingredients are any different from what you eat on a daily basis. In this episode of Asian Girl In A Western World, Lulu and Yaya talk about why Asian food is seen as unhealthy, if there's even a difference between the nutritional value of Asian and Western food, and how to respect a food's cultural origin while still providing healthy options for people who need it.

EPISODE 51- Why Are Asian Men Seen As "Less Attractive"?

EPISODE 51- Why Are Asian Men Seen As "Less Attractive"?

You might have seen it before on TV or in the movies- the age-old nerdy, stereotypical unattractive Asian stereotype. From Breakfast at Tiffany's to Charlie Chan, early depictions of Asian men in the media have resulted in them being seen as a joke in the public eye. It's a bit rare to see something as blatantly racist as that on the big screen these days, so how come people still view Asians the same way people did in the 50's? Or conversely, why do some people like Asians a little too much? In this episode of Asian Girl In A Western World, Lulu and Yaya express the true feelings of Asian men when it comes to being either emasculated or fetishized in society, why people perceive Asian men the way they do, and what we can do about the issue of emasculation and fetishization of Asian men.

EPISODE 50- Conquering Life's Obstacles Through Writing (ft. Risha Chaurasia)

We're sure you read many books as a kid, but did you ever write one? At what age would you expect someone to publish a book? The more important thing we should be asking is- how old do you have to be in order to share your story with the world? In this episode of Asian Girl In A Western World, Lulu and Yaya speak to teen author Risha Chaurasia about her two books - Tales of Twinkling Teens and Truce - why she likes writing, what obstacles she has faced as a young author, and what advice she has for aspiring authors.

EPISODE 49- Can People Change?

EPISODE 49- Can People Change?

Take a moment and ask yourself- How are you different than you used to be? Do you feel like you've changed a lot or do you feel like you're still the same as you used to be? Whatever the case may be, life takes unexpected turns. No matter how stable things may seem, you could be thrown a curveball at any given moment. And that very idea leads us to ask ourselves- can people change? In this episode of Asian Girl In A Western World, Lulu and Yaya get personal about their early childhood, how they've changed as they've gotten older, and discuss whether people, in general, can truly change and why. Be sure to stick around for the intermission to hear some fun updates about our friend Ramen the God's new music and a sneak peek of his latest release!

EPISODE 48- Pre-Colonial LGBTQ+ Pride in Asia

EPISODE 48- Pre-Colonial LGBTQ+ Pride in Asia

For a lot of queer Asian people, it can sometimes be very hard to find a place where they are embraced for who they are. This can even be the case in some Asian families, where they may believe that being queer is a direct result of Western influence. In Asia, there are many laws that discriminate against same-sex relationships. But was it always this way? Is being LGBTQ+ only a part of Western culture? In this episode of Asian Girl In A Western World, Lulu and Yaya dive deep into pre-colonial history to look at early homosexual practices and diverse gender expression in Asia, discuss how those practices compare to modern-day policy, and where the LGBTQ+ community stands in the eyes of Asian culture today.

EPISODE 47- The Asian American Family and Autism

EPISODE 47- The Asian American Family and Autism

If we were to ask you, "Would you ever discriminate against somebody?", what would your response be? We would hope that your answer would be no. But even so, sometimes when we think of discrimination, we think of it being against something that is physically obvious. But when we see somebody behaving in a way we're not familiar with, we may be quick to judge or even think "That's strange". Especially when we're observing this from a place of innocent ignorance. In this episode of Asian Girl In A Western World, Lulu and Yaya discuss autism, some common characteristics of it, what unique challenges are faced by the autistic Asian community, and how we can go about supporting autistic people. Be sure to listen to our intermission to find out how you can advocate for autism acceptance right now!

EPISODE 46- Language Barriers as Asian Americans

EPISODE 46- Language Barriers as Asian Americans

"But aren't you Chinese? Shouldn't you know how to speak your own language?" For some of us, especially Asians who are third generation or later, we did not grow up speaking our native language, or we may have forgotten it or even rejected it growing up in order to get by in America. What we didn't realize as kids was how far it would make us feel from our culture. Because language is such a big part of any culture, it is painful when we can't speak with our relatives or our other Asian peers because it makes us feel as if we are not Asian enough. In this episode of Asian Girl In A Wester World, Lulu and Yaya catch up with one another and talk about their struggles with not speaking their native language, the barriers in communication that are embedded in cultural hierarchy, and our how it feels to feel like you're failing at being both Asian and American at the same time.  Produced and Edited by Lulu & Yaya Intro & Outro Music by Ramen the God Transition Music: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lc6tZZTfP6M&t=74s&ab_channel=wetgropes  © 2021

EPISODE 45- Dear Grandma...

For a lot of people, grandmothers have a very special place in our hearts. They tell us stories, make sure we're well-fed, and show their love in the most unique and beautiful ways. However, these days, it's hard to see our grandmothers very often. And with everything going on, we find that a huge concern of ours is the well-being of our grandmothers- just like ours is always a huge concern of theirs. In this episode of Asian Girl In A Western World, Lulu and Yaya start off AAPI month by talking about their grandmothers- their favorite memories, their background stories, and special messages for their grandmothers.

EPISODE 44- Anti-Asian Racism In Sports

EPISODE 44- Anti-Asian Racism In Sports

Sports are all just fun and games, right? Until of course, players are ridiculed for their identity. Racial minorities are treated unfairly in a lot of different ways, and sports is no exception. But why does this happen so often? If you haven't heard anything, maybe this unfair treatment has been so normalized that people think this kind of treatment of Asian athletes is all fair game. In this episode of Asian Girl In A Western World, Lulu and Yaya discuss the recent UFC fight between Zhang Weili and Rose Namajunas, break down the political and racial implications of it, provide more real-life examples of anti-Asian racism in sports and talk about how we can prevent these incidents in the first place.

EPISODE 28- Sharing Asian Narratives [Chapter 1: Alison, Hasna, Amara]

EPISODE 28- Sharing Asian Narratives [Chapter 1: Alison, Hasna, Amara]

Growing up, we used to feel like outcasts in western society. Things we ate, the language we spoke, the music we would listen to, holidays we would celebrate, and more were very different compared to our friends who aren't Asian. Because of this, we thought we were the only ones who would follow these traditions. Listening to other Asian narratives allowed us to appreciate and love our culture. We created this podcast to share our personal experiences and narratives but we also believe it is important to share others as well! Listening to more stories and experiences others face, teaches us more about the world, enriches our understanding of others, and connects us. In this series, Lulu and Yaya will bring in three guest speakers, coming from all different backgrounds and various parts of the world, to share their narratives and stories as Asians! In this episode, meet Alison Young, Hasna Azis, and Amara Saputra, who share their stories about struggles with identity, being the first-born daughter, and striving to create change. EPISODE 20- UNREPORTED: Chinatown Head Bashing [Storytime]

"A good friend knows your best stories. A best friend has lived them with you." - Anonymous. In this series, Lulu and Yaya are going to share some of the stories we have together with you. You might laugh, you might cry, you might think to yourself, “what the hell am I listening to?”, but all of the stories we share had an impact on who we are, our perspectives, and our hopes for the future.

Isn't it crazy to think about just how many things happen that we are not made aware of? Arguably, one can say ignorance is bliss, but we believe that awareness and knowledge are powerful. In this episode of Asian Girl In A Western World, Lulu and Yaya report on a murder they witnessed in Chinatown in late August, discuss trauma, why it wasn't reported by the media, and what they have learned from what they saw that day.

This episode contains descriptions of violence and trauma. We advise extreme caution for children under 13, and other audience members who may feel uncomfortable with this subject matter. Listener discretion is advised.
