Ableism In Disney? What Is Disney And Pixar Movies Portraying As A Message To People

Ableism In Disney? What Is Disney And Pixar Movies Portraying As A Message To People

As we know that it should come to no surprise whatsoever that we live in a world where society, movies and messages on bulletin telling or sharing with us that we should be living in a world where it is highly catered and meeting the needs of able-bodied. More than that, people with disabilities are so often underrepresented in the media, TV, literature, and film. People with disabilities are habitually only cast if their disability serves to explain some tragic backstory or denote a questionable morality. Contrary to popular belief, disability studies and educational reform have become a major priority in the literary, critical, medical, and political world. Just recently in 1990, the Americans with Disabilities Act was passed to give civil rights to people with disabilities. This shows how oblivious many were to the severity of disabilities in society before this time, and also how people with disabilities have been ostracized and abused through out centuries. Popular theorists such as Ronald J. Berger and Lennard J. Davis introduce terminology and views on how to better understand disabilities. According to Berger, “disability studies- an interdisciplinary field of inquiry that includes representation from social sciences, the humanities, and the medical, rehabilitation, and education professions- is vital to an understanding of humankind” (Berger, Introducing Disability studies. 2013). Berger is definitely opening the doors and helping those with disabilities find their place in society. Davis, on the other hand, focuses on the “construction of normalcy” saying, “the problem is not the person with disabilities; the problem is the way normalcy is constructed to create the problem of the disabled person” (Davis, The Disability Studies Reader. 2006). Basically, society gets to label what is normal and what is not. I was terrified of the evil grasshopper from A Bug’s Life but what does that say about me or about how Disney portrays some animals as able bodied and good and the ones that are missing a language as savage and evil? Or more importantly, what does this say about us as people (particularly those privileged as being seen as able-bodied and “normal”) that we often do not question or notice inequalities and illusions to slavery within our imaged utopias and cartoon wonderlands that we watch and admire while we were young! On top of the more obvious examples, there seems to be an underlying theme of dehumanization of certain characters/groups of characters in Disney films and TV. Here, I will look at how Disney portrays disabilities and the treatment the characters receive. The first Disney movie I would like to Discuss is Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. All of the seven dwarfs have some kind of disability on top of having a growth impairment. The two main dwarfs are Dopey and Doc. Doc is the leader amongst the seven and suffers a speech impediment, having trouble pronouncing words correctly and often stuttering. He is also slightly bigger than the other dwarfs which makes the others look weaker. Doc’s disabilities are a perfect representation of Berger’s ableism-“assumes that some people (and bodies) are normal and superior while other people are abnormal and inferior” (Berger, Introducing Disability studies. 2013). Due to Doc’s condition he was the most able dwarf and all the other dwarfs were secondary to him. Disney’s representation of Doc shows that disabilities like or similar to his makes all the others lesser and more reliable to the “normal” or “most normal” person. On the other hand, Dopey is the complete opposite of Doc and ableism. Dopey’s disability would put him in the intellectual disability category. Intellectual disability is significant limitations intellectual functioning and adaptive behavior, which covers many everyday social and practical skills, this is also the term now used for mental retardation. Dopey shows signs of this disabilities by not being able to talk and his child like behavior. Dopey also seems to be very clumsy, tripping over everything and trying to mimic the other dwarfs through out their daily routines. Disney, clearly depicts Dopey as a disabled person by making him the weakest dwarf and also with the name he was given. For that matter, all of the dwarfs in Snow White have some sort of difference in functioning that allows them to live with Snow White in a non-sexualized way. In particular, Doc and Dopey are both dwarfs that have prominent roles in the film. Doc, the head dwarf of the seven, has a speech impediment. He has trouble with most of his verbal communication—stuttering on his words that often do not sound comprehensible. Throughout the film, Doc has to correct his words— when saying “hen” he corrects it to mean “men” and again saying “lapel diflings” when meaning apple dumplings. It is nice to see that even with this speech difficulty Doc still can remain the head of this group of dwa

25 Examples Of Ableism To Avoid As An Ally To People With Disabilities

25 Examples Of Ableism To Avoid As An Ally To People With Disabilities

#25examplesofableismtoavoid #ableism #peoplewithdisabilities There will always be ableist remarks that are still fairly common and are commonly said to people with disabilities and that it feels like kicking someone when they are down. Since at least one out of five people will become disabled in their lives —and ableism is still largely unaddressed and unknown — if you are the loved one of someone with a disability, you will want to be aware of how to proceed with compassion. Here is a list of 25 examples of ableism so you can be a good friend / medical practitioner/family member etc and avoid the harm ableism causes. So, I'm going to share with you at least 25 common examples that are being done by people who are ableist and not knowing that they are doing and hopefully this video will at least make you think twice about what you're doing to people with a disability hidden, mental or physical. We need to be mindful of others. So, here are a few do's and don'ts if you will to keep in mind when being around people with a disability. Three Kinds of Ableism

Three Kinds of Ableism

#ableism  #mentalableism #physicalabelism #aspieanswers

Before we dive into the complex and much-hidden concept of ableism, we all need to first understand the very basics of ableism. I did share with you all the very basics of ableism and what you all need to know based on my first video series of this which you can find here above me in the right-hand corner of the screen.

But in brief, ableism is defined by Wikipedia as, "discrimination and social prejudice against people with disabilities.” What does that really mean, though? Before we can get into that, we must first understand that there are 3 main types of Ableism, each regarding a different type of affected ability and each discriminated against differently. The three types kinds of ableism that were shared today were: Physical ableism, mental ableism, and cultural ableism.

Ableism and Negative Attitudes and Beliefs

Ableism and Negative Attitudes and Beliefs

#ableism #negativeattitudesandbeliefs #stigma #stereotyping

An “ableist” belief system often underlies negative attitudes, stereotypes, and stigma toward people with psychosocial disabilities. “Ableism” refers to attitudes in society that devalue and limit the potential of persons with disabilities. Ableism is disablism (Brit. English), androphobia, anapirism, and disability discrimination) is discrimination and social prejudice against people with disabilities or who are perceived to have disabilities. Ableism characterizes persons as defined by their disabilities and as inferior to the non-disabled. On this basis, people are assigned or denied certain perceived abilities, skills, or character orientations.  There are stereotypes, generally inaccurate, associated with either disability in general, or with specific disabilities (for instance a presumption that all disabled people want to be cured, that wheelchair users necessarily have an intellectual disability, or that blind people have some special form of insight). These stereotypes in turn serve as a justification for ableist practices and reinforce discriminatory attitudes and behaviors toward people who are disabled. Labeling affects people when it limits their options for action or changes their identity and self-worth along with their self-esteem.

I shared briefly the different types of ableism that we should know about or educate ourselves better on. You may have heard some of these terms for different types of this or not but here to share with you today about them and also the impact that it has on people with different disabilities. The one important one of the ableism types that I shared is benevolent ableism as well as sharing what the problem with this one is and how we can help others with different disabilities.

Coming to Terms with the Late Diagnosis of Autism as an Adult/Getting Support P1

Coming to Terms with the Late Diagnosis of Autism as an Adult/Getting Support P1

#latediagnosisasanautisticadult #aspieanswers #autism DISCLAIMER: I'M NO MEDICAL DOCTOR, SO IF YOU SEE ANY SIGNS/SYMPTOMS, PLEASE SEEK MEDICAL ADVICE OR A SECOND OPINION - SOME TOPICS I'LL BE SHARING ARE BASED ON MY LIVED EXPERIENCES This is the first part of the series based on the title as shared above. This one is covering the topic of getting support. It's a given that when we get diagnosed that many children will seek medical assistance and that ideally it's known that autism is diagnosed by when a child is 18 months old. However, it's not unusual to be diagnosed with autism as a teenager or an adult. This is particularly common with middle-aged adults who come of age before mental health professionals understood and accepted the autistic spectrum. If you've been diagnosed with autism at a late age, it can take some time for you to wrap your head around the diagnosis. Once you understand more about your diagnosis, it can be liberating and exciting to learn the reasons behind some of your behaviors and explore the welcoming and supportive community of autistic people. Here I am today, going to share with you all some tips and advice about this topic for you or your loved one that has autism so that we can together understand each other more. We are more than just having autism. There will be three parts of this yet will hope to try and keep it as short as possible. Let's begin, shall we? Thanks for watching and for your support!  who diagnosed me, when, what I do for my diagnosis (treatment and/or therapies), and what medications - do I take any?

I told her my views about medications and then did the three-hour assessment.

Pros And Cons Of Seeking An Autistic Adult Diagnosis!

Pros And Cons Of Seeking An Autistic Adult Diagnosis!

Have you ever wondered to yourself if you wanted to get the diagnosis and didn't know what to do or even knew that you had something that may have propped up as a formal diagnosis? Self-diagnosis is common among adults on the Autism Spectrum. While some receive a late Aspergers diagnosis, those who discover Aspergers/Autism for themselves don't always choose to follow up this self-discovery with an official diagnosis. Here today, I am officially sharing with you more about having it with the pros and cons to help you to decide is it worth it or not. As you're aware that most of the time, I do love to have lists to balance up the pros and cons of any given situation that I'm facing to come up with a possible solution. I hope that this helps you all today.

Disclaimer: I'm no medical doctor, I'm just your normal Jo Blogs, so if you see anything out of the ordinary of the signs and symptoms that I've shared in the past or present, do seek a second opinion or advice. Also, as you've noticed that for many years that there have been so many different clinical terms that have been interchanged in the diagnosis field and I'll do my utmost best to not offend anyone especially those on the spectrum but my advice to you all is to ask an autistic to how they want to be called.

Is It Worth Getting An Autistic Self-Diagnosis?

Is It Worth Getting An Autistic Self-Diagnosis?

Getting an adult autism diagnosis is fraught with uncertainty, and once you’ve had your "lightbulb" moment that you think you might be autistic, the first thing you have to figure out is “should I get assessed for autism?”  There are many pros and cons to getting a late autism diagnosis, and while this video is not comprehensive, I talk about the various factors that might help you decide whether or not it’s worth pursuing an autism diagnosis in adulthood.

Disclaimer: I'm no medical doctor, I'm just your normal Jo Bloggs so if you see anything out of the ordinary, do seek professional help or a second opinion from a medical specialist. There have been many clinical terms that have been interchanged for so many years so I'll do my utmost best to use the correct terms yet in saying that be sure to ask an autistic to how they want to be called.

How to Spot Signs of Autism in Teenagers [Informational Guide, 2021]

How to Spot Signs of Autism in Teenagers [Informational Guide, 2021]

DISCLAIMER: I am no medical doctor, I'm just your normal Jo Bloggs who's sharing her lived experiences with Autism that was called Aspergers. If you see any warning signs/symptoms that may be related to any of the topics I share as of in the future, please seek a second opinion or treatment with a medical professional. What I share with you in how I go about managing my autism will vary from person to person and that what may work for me, may not work for you and what will work for you may not work for me and vice versa. So, please be considerate while I give you all my advice and/or tips.

Whether you're a parent or a high-school teacher, or a carer in the care of a teenager that you feel that they look, act and sound different. Chances are, you're probably right. The chances are, you may have noticed some "abnormalities" in a teenager. Some of it may just seem like social awkwardness, but maybe you've noticed some other odd behaviors in this teen, or it just feels to you like there's something more to this teen than the typical "social awkwardness". In some cases, a person in their teenage years may be autistic, and they weren't diagnosed as a child. Autism can be difficult for a teen to cope with, but it's not nearly as terrible as others make it out to be, and understanding why your teen is the way they are can help them - and you - be happier and be more at peace now that you have a diagnosis for your teen. I am here to give you some tips/advice on how to spot them as early as possible. The earlier the better so that you can get the best treatment, therapy, etc for your teen.

HOW TO RECOGNIZE SIGNS OF AUTISM IN BABIES AND CHILDREN

HOW TO RECOGNIZE SIGNS OF AUTISM IN BABIES AND CHILDREN

DISCLAIMER: I am no medical doctor, I'm just your normal Jo Bloggs who's sharing her lived experiences with Autism that was called Aspergers. Autism is a spectrum condition, meaning that there are many different ways your child may manifest, learn,  or show, signs of autism across a wide spectrum of behaviors. The autistic child experiences disordered brain development that is typically demonstrated through difficulties or differences in intellectual ability, social interaction, nonverbal and verbal communication, and stimming (self-stimulation, such as repetitive movements). Although every autistic child is unique, it is essential to recognize the signs and symptoms as early as possible to secure early intervention services to help you and your child live life to the fullest possible. If you find any of the signs recognizable and that you suspect that your child does have autism, now is the time and chance for you to take them to a specialist. The earlier the better for prevention of anything else that may arise later on in their life. Living with autism for many of us is difficult at any stage and age of our lives. As we feel that we are just aliens to others around us.

There were four methods in how to recognise the signs as well as some tips and advice from a friendly Aspie to you all.

As we know that autism is a long-life condition and that it will be with us for life. Autism doesn't have a color. Autism doesn't have a race. Autism doesn't discriminate and that people still partly discriminate against us or exclude us from their everyday activities for whatever their reasons. Autism has always been known for being diagnosed in children and not adults as they miss out.

Life can be challenging for autistic children at any given age, stage, and time while transitioning especially after being diagnosed with autism.  The most important thing a parent can do is assess their child, have it diagnosed early in the child’s life, and find helpful and respectful treatment for the child. As they say the earlier the better you do this, the easier it is to find the right treatments and methods, etc for a child. The following video, the podcast is an informational guideline for assessing your child. You as a parent, you can begin assessing your child at home as early as one year old, but as your child ages and matures, the characteristics of an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) will be more apparent earlier or later in life. There are two methods to follow and they are method one is observing and assessing your child and method two is looking for the signs of ASD. Method 1 Observing and Assessing Your Child and Method 2: Method 2:  Looking for Signs of ASD.

Autism is an inborn, lifelong disability that affects different people in different ways.  While toddlers can be diagnosed autistic, sometimes the signs aren't obvious right away, or they aren't understood. This means that some autistic people go undiagnosed until their adolescence or adulthood.

If you've often felt different but never understood why it's possible that you could be on the autistic spectrum.

In this podcast, this will be broken down into four parts to gain a better understanding and hopefully be easier to navigate through to what I am sharing with you all today. The parts are as follows: Part 1 Observing General Characteristics, Part 2: Scouring the internet, part 3: Confronting your misconceptions, and lastly part 4: consulting people you know. Let's begin this now, shall we?

In this series of the episode of diagnosing vs. self-diagnosing, this one covers at least 8 or 9 reasons why you should get a diagnosis for autism but not just autism as this can be for any form of diagnosis that you're going for. These are only based on my opinions and experiences so please bear with me on this. Sure, getting a diagnosis of any kind can be scary and other mixed emotions yet it will be well worth it in the end.

In this part of the episode series, I talk just briefly about my diagnosis of Aspergers of how it happened, when, and what it was really like for me. Some people when getting any diagnosis it can be really scary, nerve-wracking, and more but then it can be for some of our relief so that then we know now that there is something that we can do about it by managing it every day.

For a while now, I have been coming across a series of articles as well as people from the Autistic Community on Facebook talking about how a majority of the number of people in the Autism Community no longer like the pieces of the jigsaw puzzle that has different shapes of what may have been seen either on a ribbon, heart, butterfly or even just a single jigsaw puzzle piece as a symbol for people with Autism.  This has honestly surprised me, as I wasn’t aware of any negative connotations to the symbol at the time before I was being told about this. There has been a bit of misunderstanding between Neurotypicals and Autistics about Autism Awareness Month that has now been called “Autism Acceptance month”  What I have written below more about what it is and so on.

Autism Awareness/Should the Autism Symbol STAY OR GO?

In today's Aspie's vlog, I will be discussing the symbol for Autism, or more specifically its history and what people think of it. Is the puzzle piece still a fitting symbol for Autism, or is it perhaps time for a new symbol to step in? Let us know what you think!  What comes to your mind of the word Autism and Autism Awareness as well as Autism Acceptance? There have been many controversies over many years now about what the logo should be for representing Autism. There have been some discussions in the groups I have been on Facebook for quite some time about this as well as if it should be "Autism Awareness" or "Autism Acceptance". For many of us in the groups have agreed that it should be all about  Autism Acceptance. You see that this puzzle piece along with one of the puzzle pieces that are colourful is usually colourful or just and out on its own as a blue piece has been a popular logo that has been used and you would think that everyone is happy with it, right? So, I did a bit of my own research and digging about the Autism puzzle logo/symbol as well as a little bit of history and origin along with other logos that have been used.  Autism Spectrum Diversity Group on Facebook said: "We here at Autism Spectrum Diversity are taking a different approach towards World Autism Awareness Day. We do not approve of the light-it-up blue campaign which was founded by Autism Speaks. The reasons are simple, Autism Speaks believe that autism should be eradicated which installs an idea that we are somehow broken or faulty, this is very damaging to people who are autistic and the autism community. We are not broken, we are human and we all have a heart. We can either light it up blue for Autism Speaks who do not speak for autistic's, or we can Light It Up Gold For Autism Acceptance".    In the end, I believe symbols are important, just as words are. The symbol we choose to represent ourselves should reflect our values. I would like to open up a discussion for you all that are interested to share your thoughts/opinions based on the Autism Puzzle piece or any other logos that can be good for symbolizing Autism Awareness or does it need to be changed? If you think that it should be changed what symbol logo should we use to represent our community?

A few days ago on April 2nd was World Autism Awareness Day, but should we really be focusing on autism awareness in 2019,  or is it time for acceptance? Do I 'Light It Up Blue?' What do I wish for this special month? What is more important to me?  Today I talk about some of the complicated feelings that I have each year on April 2nd as an Aspie.  I think that April can be an important month for Autism. But I also think that we need to approach it carefully. Please bear in mind to what I share in this video are based on my own thoughts, opinions and experiences and that I hope that we can respect each other's opinions and much more here as I've always shared before that I am willing to accept everyone's differences of who and what they are etc.

April 2 was World Autism Awareness Day. There will be plenty of people that will be relatively new to being “autism parents,” or “autism advocates” and so on. I am all for awareness, acceptance, and generally increasing education for those who don’t know enough, or are starting out to wanting to know more about Autism in general and so much more. As you are aware I’ve been a voice/advocate on my channel for four years and only been blogging for almost two years.  I talked briefly to when it all began for Autism Awareness and Acceptance Month.  World Autism Awareness Day was brought into being in December 2007 by a United Nations General Assembly resolution, under the more general auspices of improving human rights around the world. The resolution was met with acceptance from all member states, and first celebrated on April 2, 2008. For 2018, the U.N.’s program for the day includes a special focus on women and girls with autism; recent analyses estimate that 3.25 boys are diagnosed for everyone one girl (down from 4:1), but when looking for autism in girls (who often presently drastically differently than boys), that ratio can drop even more.

April is Autism Month and you may have seen the hashtag #AutisticGold, but what is Autistic Gold? As part of #ActuallyAutistic voices reclaiming #WAAD2020 with moments such as #RedInstead and #OurGoldenMoment, this phenomenon goes deep into the heart of autistic pride, and what it means for us personally to be on the spectrum.  This video explains the concept and why thinking about Gold is such a great way to understand autism. When we discover autistic gold, we have the power to heal a broken world!

Over the last year or so, a few Autistic members have been ghosting their way around the online autistic community with good intentions. Not to be all stalker-y here, honest, but they wanted to find a constant thread that the authentic, Actually Autistic voice spoke. This is not only intended to be just for the month of April. The idea is to have a common thread that runs through all groups, advocates, and supporters that was easily recognized, different, and came from the autistic community, not from those who think they speak for us. The Gold Infinity is for use on ANY work, event, campaign, fundraising, whatever! It is meant as a symbol of authenticity, declaring support for acceptance all year round and stating this message came from an authentic autistic voice.  I also spoke briefly about what this symbol represents and how it came about for the Autistic community.

World Autism Acceptance Month-How To Help Someone Get Involved More On Autism Acceptance Month [April,2021]

World Autism Acceptance Month-How To Help Someone Get Involved More On Autism Acceptance Month [April,2021]

This month of April as like every year is Autism Awareness and Acceptance month for many of us autistics. There is some conversation going on to what we should have this month to be called. I believe that there is already an awareness of people who has autism and that others are aware of this. I feel that there needs to be more accepting of others with autism. This month should be focused on more acceptance and or accepting of others that are different and basically, it should be every month not just April like any other holidays and/or celebrations that we celebrate together. The negative focus of autism awareness campaigns can take a toll on autistic people's mental health.  Not everyone recognizes the difference between a positive and negative campaign about autism. When you see someone supporting a harmful campaign, you may not be sure how to reach them. While not everyone is open to being convinced, many people are willing to listen if you approach them in the right way and with kindness. So, I am going to be real short and brief about this with a few steps to guide, assist you all this month.

It's time to talk about a topic where the wording is very crucial. I debate that has been going on for many years now and makes us rethink some of the things we say to celebrate Autism in April. As we know that these two terms have been used many times and interchanging. What is the difference between Autism Awareness Month and Autism Acceptance Month?

Autism Awareness & Acceptance Month - Something To Think About [April, 2020]

Autism Awareness & Acceptance Month - Something To Think About [April, 2020]

A quick post about Autism Awareness month is something to think about. Parents need to be aware that Light it up Blue was created by Autism Speaks, an organization many Autistic people have issues with. Therefore, a lot of Autistic people do not support Light it up Blue for Autism Awareness month. This is also why on social media you'll see Light it up Gold, Light it up Red, and a range of other "Light it up" colors. These are all alternatives to Light it up Blue created by actual Autistic people.

I talked a bit briefly about the history of Autism speaks and its mission or visions for the next ten years that they hope to achieve. A second issue about Autism awareness month, for many Autistic people, is exactly how and what is positive awareness of Autism from our perspective.

It's a sad thing that many actual Autistic people want to run and hide during Autism Awareness month. Or feel saddened, frustrated, or even angry.

Why this reaction from us? Because all too often Autism Awareness means awareness of negative aspects of Autism. Awareness of how challenging Autistic people are to raise. Awareness of the perspective of NT people who have us in their lives. All too often for us, the ideas promoted about Autistic people in Autism Awareness month do not feel like ideas of positive acceptance of Autism.

If you're going to support Autism Awareness month, please think about what we as Autistic people might want the world to know about us.

Please promote our strengths, promote all that is positive with our difference, and why we add value to society. Be aware that Autism Awareness month has a historic background of creating further public awareness of how difficult life is for those who raise or support us. Please be aware that Autism acceptance month can be emotionally conflicting for Autistic people. You see, you can be aware of something and not accept or embrace it. Awareness means you know something exists but you can still choose to ignore it, remain ignorant regarding it, outright reject it, and have a negative attitude towards it. Acceptance, however, is about embracing it, it is about understanding, inclusion, empowerment, and non-discriminatory attitudes being upheld.

So, please be considerate while I give you all my advice and/or tips.

Autism is a lifelong developmental disability that begins prenatally. While many autistic people don't show clear traits in early childhood, signs usually begin showing up in the first few months to years of life.  If you suspect your child may be autistic, there are a few signs you can look for in early childhood that might point to a diagnosis. Yet, some of the signs and symptoms will vary from person to person with the diagnosis. There are two methods in this step-by-step audio comprehension guide and they are as follows: Method 1: Accessing Your Child at Home and Method 2 is Talking to your pediatrician along with some tips and warnings from an Aspie.

Understanding The Three Different Levels Of Autism [DSM 5 Series]

Understanding The Three Different Levels Of Autism [DSM 5 Series]

DISCLAIMER: I am no medical doctor, I'm just your normal Jo Bloggs who's sharing her lived experiences with Autism that was called Aspergers. If you see any warning signs/symptoms that may be related to any of the topics I share as of in the future, please seek a second opinion or treatment with a  medical professional. Autism is a "spectrum" disorder, meaning that a person with autism can be mildly, moderately, or severely autistic.  What's more, while everyone with autism has certain core symptoms, many people also have additional intellectual or language impairments.  Since everyone with autism receives the same diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder (ASD), the creators of the official Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th Edition (DSM-5) identified three levels of the disorder, with each one requiring a different level of support. This helps clinicians provide a more specific diagnosis and also helps those involved in the care of people with autism have a clearer understanding of a person's limitations. The three levels reflect individuals' ability to communicate, adapt to new situations, expand beyond restricted interests, and manage daily life.  People at Level 1 need relatively little support, while people at Level 3 need a great deal of support. I shared more into this in the video. I talked briefly about How the Diagnosis of Autism Changed in DSM-5 and what it entails for the three different levels of autism of support and help that the autistic will need.

New Zealand Autism Spectrum Disorder Guidelines Overview for Professionals

New Zealand Autism Spectrum Disorder Guidelines Overview for Professionals

DISCLAIMER: I am no medical doctor, I'm just your normal Jo Bloggs who's sharing her lived experiences with Autism that was called Aspergers. If you see any warning signs/symptoms that may be related to any of the topics I share as of in the future, please seek a second opinion or treatment with a  medical professional. What I share with you in how I go about managing my autism will vary from person to person and that what may work for me, may not work for you and what will work for you may not work for me and vice versa. So, please be considerate while I give you all my advice and/or tips.

The NZ Autism Spectrum Disorder Guideline provides evidence-based information for people on the autism spectrum, their family and whanau, as well as health, disability, and education professionals and social service agencies.  It includes information about good practice that is evidence-based and aims to improve the health, educational and social outcomes for people with ASD. As part of the implementation of the Guideline, the Ministries of Health and Education established a living guideline process to regularly update the Guideline to reflect new evidence and changing user needs. Since the living guideline process was established in 2009, Supplementary Papers have been published annually. These provide updates in areas of applied behavior analysis, pharmacological interventions, supported employment, changes in diagnostic criteria in the DSM-5, gastrointestinal issues, social skills groups, and cognitive behavior therapy. For health professionals: Early identification of children with ASD is essential – it enables early intervention and is likely to lead to better function in later life. There is no cure for ASD. Parents’ concerns about their child’s development must be taken seriously. Pathways for people with ASD to access assessment need to be clearly identified. (The Guideline describes some of these pathways.) Multidisciplinary assessments through specialist ASD services are the best way to improve diagnosis. Robust information on effective assessment and diagnosis processes for different age groups is needed. Health professionals assessing people with ASD need to be aware of effective assessment tools and the role of cognitive assessment. For the education sector: A single approach or solution is unlikely to ever meet the needs of all learners with ASD. Educators need to choose approaches that fit the individual and their settings, and need to be skilled in providing a range of interventions Strategies need to be implemented right across home, early childhood education, school, and community settings if we are to achieve successful outcomes for children and young people with ASD. Most overseas educational intervention programs are based on three broad approaches: discrete trial training (DTT) contemporary behavioral and developmental research findings developmental (social pragmatic) approaches. Some programs include elements of all three. No one approach has been shown to be more effective than another. Current special education practice in NZ emphasizes participation and development, rather than ‘fixing’ the child. Teaching children with ASD in isolated settings away from other children is not the best practice. Children and young people must be supported to use what they learn in more than one setting. The best way to achieve this is for parents, teachers, and peers to work collaboratively.

If you have ever read the Diagnostic Manual for various brain-related things including Autism, Aspergers Syndrome, PDD NOS, and many others underneath the Autism Spectrum Disorders, the DSM 5, – which I wouldn’t really recommend unless you need to. It’s not exactly light reading and for the faint-hearted as a lot of research is done for educators, medical professionals, and many others. Anyway one of the criteria for a diagnosis of Autism is in the statement to what I am about to share here right now. There are cuter qualifying statements that are related to it and this statement that has been stated is this:  *Persistent deficits in social communication and social interaction across multiple contexts…  I talk about the diagnostics based around a statement along with what it entails with me as an Aspie for one to how it works and the importance on this along with many more thoughts to this.

This paper was written with the support of the New Zealand Autism Spectrum Disorder Living Guideline Group on 25 March 2014 with the help of the Ministry of Health.  During the release of the report as well as the DSM-5, there have been so many changes to be made as well as also this is an in-depth paper. To find out more about this, you can read it here: https://www.health.govt.nz/system/files/documents/publications/nzasd-supplementary-paper-on-applied-behaviour-analysis-mar16.pdf

This report is dedicated to the memory of our colleague and friend, the late Joanna Curzon, who was instrumental in the development of the New Zealand Autism Spectrum Disorder Guideline and in establishing and supporting the living guideline process.

Autism Diagnostic Criteria-DSM-5 Explained [Brief Explanation]

Autism Diagnostic Criteria-DSM-5 Explained [Brief Explanation]

This is one of the many series of the DSM-5 I am going to explain to you all today. The autism diagnosis criteria are written for professional use and are therefore shrouded in mysterious and somewhat opaque language. In this video, I'm attempting to explain the DSM criteria for autism diagnosis (under the umbrella of Autism Spectrum Disorder) which is used in North America and parts of Europe (the ICD-11 is a more international version, but it is largely the same for the purposes of autism diagnosis). I also shared some parts based on my experiences and struggles from some parts of the diagnosis process that it takes for us to get the autistic diagnosis.   To read the DSM-5 criteria for yourself:
https://www.cdc.gov/ncbddd/autism/hcp...

As shared I've also done a few series on my channel which you can find under the playlist DSM 5 Manual and the NZ ASD Guidelines

So, come and join me and have a listen as I educate you all about this part of the series and more.

Happy listening!

Identity First Language /Autistic Person, Person With Autism Or What? What Do YOU Want To Be Called?

Identity First Language /Autistic Person, Person With Autism Or What? What Do YOU Want To Be Called?

DISCLAIMER: I am no medical doctor, I'm just your normal Jo Bloggs who's sharing her lived experiences with Autism that was called Aspergers. If you see any warning signs/symptoms that may be related to any of the topics I share as of in the future, please seek a second opinion or treatment with a  medical professional. What I share with you in how I go about managing my autism will vary from person to person and that what may work for me,  may not work for you and what will work for you may not work for me and vice versa. So, please be considerate while I give you all my advice and/or tips.

As we know that words and language are powerful tools by which an individual can express ideas, thoughts, and more whether it is abstract, actionable, or concrete. I myself as an individual know firsthand and understand full darn well that language and the meanings towards words can very much impact someone no matter who and what they are as a person. We as individuals I believe do tend to attach to some of the words very much for impact and influence and even more so developing and changing the attitudes that we have towards the subjects and or matters of discussion. That's why many people I have spoken to or heard from are easily insulted or upset by the everyday word choices that we have.   I am here today to try and explain to you all right now about this topic as this is really controversial for many of us that are autistic. Before, I begin this is just based on what I've experienced and known all my time after talking to some people in the autistic community about how they may feel.  It has been known for quite some time now for many of us autistics that we meet some people that have some misunderstanding and misconceptions about autistics no matter what it is. So what can we do moving forward? Or, more importantly, what should we do? To those of you who use “person with autism,” I will always respect your constitutional right to express yourself however you like, but I urge you to reconsider the consequences of using such language. To those of you who use “Autistic person,” I urge you to consistently use such phrasing everywhere possible, whenever discussing autism and issues that affect  Autistic people and to develop coherent, rational explanations for why you prefer this terminology so that you can engage in such mutually respectful and civil exchanges with others. That, actually, goes for everyone. If we ever want to accomplish anything as a community, as a movement, or as advocates,  we cannot allow ourselves to be constantly divided by infighting and vicious bullying — and yes, that occurs from all sides of these debates,  not just one. It is imperative that we learn to engage critically and respectfully with one another and to value each individual’s voice and feelings as equally important. Otherwise, we’ll become even more dysfunctional than my subcommittee has been in recent months.
