This small episode is our farewell from this amazing podcast. We are extremely thankful for all the people we have met along the way as well as all of the opportunities we have had to collaborate with amazing people. At The Root: Ep. 6 - Highlighting the PI in AAPI
AAPI month stands for Asian American and Pacific Islander Awareness Month. It is celebrated for the duration of the month of May for recognizing the contributions and influence of Asian Americans and Pacific Islander Americans.
In this discussion, we want to bring awareness to social justice issues many Pacific Islander communities face and bring awareness to said issues whilst uplifting our guests' personal experiences and impacts of being in Pacific Islander communities. We also want to remind everyone of events unfolding across the Asian American community and the deep impacts it is currently making on our society. We urge you to get involved and continue to bring awareness to your community and seek equity as well as justice.
At The Root: Ep. 5 - Poetic Artivism
This week, we interviewed and sat down with our guest Jari Bradley to discuss our seed: Poetic Artivism. 🌱✨
Poetic Artivism connects art and activism. It focuses on how art in its multiple forms can embrace political intention, or how political action can become creative, poetic, sensorial.
Jari Bradley (they/them) is a Black genderqueer poet and scholar from San Francisco, California. They have received fellowships and support from Callaloo, Cave Canem, Tin House, The Pittsburgh Foundation and The Heinz Endowments. Jari’s work has been nominated for a Pushcart Prize and has been published/forthcoming in The Adroit Journal, Blood Orange Review (selected by judge Nikky Finney), The Offing, Academy of American Poets (Poem-A-Day) , Callaloo, Columbia Journal, The Virginia Quarterly Review, and elsewhere. Jari Bradley (MFA, University of Pittsburgh) is the current 2020–2021 First Wave Poetry Fellow at UW–Madison.
At The Root: Ep. 4 - The Importance of Ethnic Studies
This week, we interviewed and sat down with Dr. Malathi Iyengar to discuss the importance of ethnic studies!🌱✨
As a scholar of Ethnic Studies, Professor Iyengar has published work related to anti-racist and anticolonial social movements, theories of non/citizenship, and histories of education. Prior to becoming an Ethnic Studies instructor, she was a credentialed dual-language immersion (Spanish-English) elementary school teacher and wrote fiction and poetry for young children. She has also taught music to students of all ages. Her approach to teaching and learning echoes the great postcolonial theorist Edward Said: "I like disobedience and transdisciplinarity."

At The Root: Ep. 3 - Mental Health in People of Color Communities
This week, we interviewed and sat down with three Active Minds peer educators: Megan, Leila, and Milena, and their Advisor, Gil Perez, to discuss the topic of: Mental Health in People of Color Communities. !! 🌱✨
“Leila Rofii (she/they) is a Mental Health Peer Educator and a member of the Active Minds club at CSM. This is her third year as a Promise Scholar student and will be transferring this coming autumn as an Ecology & Evolution major. As a biracial person living in America today, Leila believes that analyzing the root of mental health stigmas in POC communities is a gateway to ending these stereotypes and allowing for healthy healing.”
Megan Lauren Bueno (she/her) is a Mental Health Peer Educator at CSM, a 2nd year promise scholar student, and a proud Filipinx-woman. Megan majors in Sociology with a minor in Musical Theatre Arts and hopes to either transfer to University of Hawai’i at Manoa or Sacramento State. She is so enthusiastic and honored to be apart of this podcast’s episode #3 Mental Health among POC communities. She is very passionate about everything surrounding the topic of Mental Health such as anxiety and depression. Megan hopes to become a Marriage and Family Therapist and that she can help others embrace themselves with love.
"Milena Ortega (she/her) is currently in her second year at the College of San Mateo. She is majoring in Communications and plans to transfer to a 4-year institution in Los Angeles this upcoming fall to pursue Film & Media Studies. Her roles at CSM include being a Mental Health Peer Educator, Secretary of Active Minds, and a Promise Scholars Student. Being a Latin American woman, Milena hopes to bring more awareness to the importance of Mental Health in BIPOC communities to erase the stigma imposed on by cultures. She plans to work within the entertainment industry, creating projects on important topics such as mental health & cultural representation."
“Gil Perez (he/him) is a cisgender, gay, Filipino, San Francisco native. He serves as a Personal Counselor at College of San Mateo and is the primary advisor for Active Minds, co-advisor for the Safe Zone Alliance, coordinates the Mental Health Peer Educator Program, and is a professor in the Counseling Division. He is very passionate about supporting community college students and helping them see the gifts and strengths in their inherent, authentic selves.”
Active Minds are mental health peer educators that fight to end the stigma surrounding mental health while also providing a safe space for students to talk to and mental health resources. Active Minds has a couple of different workshops currently! Some of those include a Parenting Support group and Guided Visualization and Expressive Arts weekly group hosted by the wonderful personal counselor Alexandra Caldeira! They also host Zoom Hangouts on Fridays and if you check out their insta page @CSMActiveMinds , you can not only find the Zoom link to Friday hangouts but also other amazing resources and workshops!

Hello everyone and welcome back to another episode of our Podcast At The Root. Once again this is Alex, Mae, and Andrea. This is the second episode of the MCCDC’s Podcast “At The Root” where we focus on creating a safe haven for Underrepresented students on our campus, as well as unapologetically talk about social justice issues and our POC communities. We wanted you all to get to know us better so we have a reflective topic for this episode. We would like to start off by saying a huge thank you to our audience for taking the time to be here today! The world has gotten much crazier and we appreciate your time and energy in listening. This is the second episode of the MCCDC’s Podcast “At The Root” where we focus on creating a safe haven for Underrepresented students on our campus. As well as unapologetically talk about social justice issues and our POC communities. Today, we will be discussing the question: What does community mean to us? We will be exploring what drives us in our communities and all the impacts our communities have had on us through the course of our lives.
At The Root: Ep. 1 - Disrupting the Good Immigrant Narrative
This week, we interviewed and sat down with three immigrant justice leaders to discuss the topic of: Disrupting the Good Immigrant Narrative!! 🌱✨
Valeria Suarez (they/she) is an undocumented queer organizer from Lima, Peru. During the past few years, they have focused on supporting deportation defense cases to free undocumented community members from detention. Valeria is currently the Bay Area Youth Coordinator for the California Immigrant Youth Justice Alliance (@ciyja ). Their work is centered around creating spaces for undocumented youth to learn deportation defense models in order to protect themselves and their communities. Valeria also serves as the coordinator for FREESF Coalition, organizing at the intersection of criminal justice reform and immigrant rights.
Laith 'Lai' Ocean (They/Them) is a disabled UndocuQueer Nicoya and ex-organizer. Lai transferred to UC Berkeley as a spring transfer from Santa Rosa Junior College to major in Sociology. Laith is currently an intern at the Multicultural Community Center (MCC) continuing their work with immigrant justice through an abolitionist framework.
Nate Tan is the Co-Director of Asian Prisoner Support Committee. He has organized for the freedom of immigrants and refugees with criminal convictions for over five years with Asian Prisoner Support Committee. Asian Prisoner Support Committee has provided reentry services and anti-deportation organizing for formerly incarcerated Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders since 2003. Asian Prisoner Support Committee also offers an Ethnic studies/Asian American studies class in San Quentin State Prison providing culturally relevant and community-responsive education since 2011. Since it’s founding APSC has seen the release and freedom of over 100 community members.

🌱At The Root is a CSM MCCDC podcast. Our goals are to create a safe haven for underrepresented students on our campus. As well as unapologetically discuss social justice issues and how they relate to our POC communities! We want to encourage our CSM students to utilize their power and voice to enact change on campus and in their community! 🌱
