Caster Semenya on new event, tokyo 2020 qualification and more at 2021 ASA Senior Championships.

Caster Semenya on new event, tokyo 2020 qualification and more at 2021 ASA Senior Championships.

Double Olympic 800 metres champion Caster Semenya spoke about qualifying for the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics Games in a new event after defending her South African championships 5,000m title in Pretoria, on Thursday.

Semenya trimmed nearly 15 seconds off her personal best by crossing the line in 15:52.28 — 42.28 secs outside the Tokyo qualifying time of 15:10.

The race was staged at an altitude of 1,339 m (4,393 feet) and Semenya is considering running the same distance at sea level, where the air is less thin and times generally faster.

“If the guys in Durban (sea-level city) do something in May, I might run,” Semenya said after her victory.

“I am pretty happy with how I ran (today) — it is all about having fun. I can’t really focus on Tokyo if I’m still building up myself at the moment.” Last year, Semenya announced she would pursue Olympics 200m qualification.

But the three-time 800m world champion has changed her mind, believing distance races will lengthen her career.

"I am 30 years old and if I were to do sprints it would be a risk to my muscles. In distance (running), there is more time to find consistency," said the three-time world 800m champion.

Akani Simbine on the fast times on Day 1 at 2021 ASA national senior championships in Pretoria.

Strong winds deny Akani Simbine and Gift Leotlela new records at the 2021 Sizwe Medical Fund ASA Senior Track & Field and Combined Events Championships in Pretoria on Thursday. Simbine stormed to victory in the 100m with a season leading time of 9.82 secs (+2.8m/s), with the 0.8m/s wind over the legal limit ruling it out from being a new South African record. In one of the other semi-finals at the Tuks Athletics Stadium, Gift Leotlela raced to victory in 9.94 secs (+3.6m/s) but the windy track also denied him a new legal sub-10 second mark.

World Athletics President Seb Coe hails Kenya's 'national obsession' with Athletics

World Athletics President Seb Coe hails Kenya's 'national obsession' with Athletics

World Athletics President Sebastian Coe on Monday praised Kenya's 'national obsession' with Athletics at a year-end virtual conference with African Athletics journalists.

"It's not just a sport, it's not just a pastime, it's a national obsession. It's a passion!," said Seb Coe.

"When people close  their eyes and think about Kenya, so often the first images they have is  the Kenyan flag and your extraordinary array of talented athletes over  the years," he added.

Coe spoke on a wide range of issues and was happy that  World Athletics had tackled the Coronavirus-ravaged season well,  managing to put together several top competitions, including the successful Kip Keino Classic in Nairobi, Kenya in October 2020.

"The first  objective we set ourselves (after the pandemic struck in March), which was an understandable one because we are an athlete-centred  organization, was to do everything we possibly could to get the athletes back into training and then into competition," he explained.

"Secondly, because  the Olympic Games had been postponed, we needed to expedite our current review of the Olympic qualification standards and systems and release any changes we were making as quickly as possible to the athletes.

"To remove an  Olympic Games has a knock-on effect, in our case, for five years and so  it's really important that we were reorganising our calendar in a way  that was respectful to other events, particularly for some of you in Africa who consider the Commonwealth Games to be a very high priority. While the crisis  management in that department was taking place, we then had to maintain the focus of growing the sport in alignment with the strategic plan."
