Ep. 83: Dan Ruedeman-AT in Ortho Trauma
Dan Ruedeman is an AT that works in the Ortho Trauma department at a University of Colorado Hospital. Dan hasn’t had the most “normal” path to becoming an AT (includes taking the BOC exam 6 times) but has worked his way to this current role and doing so much to promote ATs in physician practice. In this episode we talk about all the unique aspects of physician practice that ATs can be of help with. Dan has a lot of unique insight and passion for this role and the impact it can have on different patient populations. If you’ve ever considered working in physician practice this is a great episode to listen to in order to get more information. I personally learned a lot from this episode and hope that you do as well. REPLAY: Ep. 77: Dr. Matt Kutz-Contextual Intelligence
After finishing Dr. Kutz's book, 'Contextual Intelligence' it was worth sharing this conversation again and also getting prepped for a follow-up conversation. So much in this book is applicable to the athletic training profession but also beyond the profession and something you can build into your everyday life. Enjoy. ---------- Dr. Matt Kutz is professor in the athletic training program but does so much beyond that. Dr. Kutz is on the forefront of research and development when it comes to leadership in not only athletic training, but organizations in general. Dr. Kutz has put out many great articles focusing on leadership in athletic training and we get into the details of how that all got started and where it has taken him in his career. The story is amazing and shows just how far the skillset and knowledge of athletic trainers can go.   This conversation covers a lot when it comes to leadership in athletic training and why this has become such a focus for Dr. Kutz. You will hear about the importance of a specific aspect of Domain 5 and why Dr. Kutz thinks it is so important, not only within the profession of athletic training but helping the community understand what we our profession can do. We also spend time discussing Contextual Intelligence (Book: ) and how it plays into so many roles athletic trainers have in leadership, in the clinic and beyond. Lots of great information about this concept and how we all can apply it to life and work. Justin Young is an athletic trainer who just completed his DAT from Indiana State University. During his time there he started working with and building a Tactical Athlete Care Clinic that has evolved over the past two years (even with COVID). In this episode we discuss working with tactical athletes and what that looks like in this setting off athletic training. It comes with some unique challenges and Justin shares with us what he has identified, how he has gone about addressing it and how he plans to continue to build the care clinic in the future. Ep. 80: Meg Johnson-Athlete and AT
Meg Johnson has such a unique story about becoming an AT we felt the story had to be told, not only by use but check out the Sports Medicine Broadcast in a couple weeks for more from Meg. Meg is in a unique position with how she because an AT while at the same time being a student-athlete. This isn’t a common path to taking the courses and getting certified, throw a significant injury into the mix and Meg is now on her 6th year of eligibility. Oh and did we mention, she is doing grad school to fill that 6th year? As we mentioned Meg’s story is unique and she has such a unique insight into what it takes to be an athletic trainer. The plan she has laid out (more on this with the SMB) is going to be nothing but impactful for her and the people she serves. Ep. 79: Brea Stanton-Mentor and Mentee
Brea is finishing up her second year in the DAT program at Indiana State University where she is also currently working as a GA working with a local high school. As part of the process of working through the DAT each student was required to serve as a mentor for other ATs and also reach out to a potential mentor. That is how this episode came to be. Brea and Joel go back to their time together at UW-La Crosse where Brea was a student and Joel served as a preceptor. They didn’t see eye-to-eye on everything and hadn’t stayed in touch after Brea graduated. The mentor program has allowed them to reconnect and that’s what they discuss. The renewed connection has allowed them both to learn and that’s bee a huge key to the success. REPLAY Ep. 39: Eli Kassab-Athletic Trainer Burnout
Eli Kassab is an athletic trainer that currently works in the sport setting but has done a little bit of everything, including spending some significant time in high level football. Through all of this, Eli found himself getting burned out from the constant go of the profession. This led Eli to find some new opportunities to break the cycle of burnout and see what else might be next in his career.   In this episode we talk about burnout and how an athletic trainer might be able to handle it if they find themselves moving that direction. Eli has some very unique insight into options that ATCs can find to help with a case of burnout. This might be very applicable in mid-April and we find ourselves at home with maybe more time on our hands than we thought. REPLAY: Ep. 47: Race in Athletic Training-A Roundtable Discussion
Racism is wrong. Hate can’t be accepted. Just not being “racist” is not enough to propel change. In order to help create change, we have to listen, work to comprehend and accept the fact that those in privileged positions can never understand what diverse people go through.   ATChat hasn’t put a statement out because we needed to listen and learn from people that experience racism on potentially daily basis. We denounce any form or racism or hate, not only within the athletic training community but in the world in general.  We will do more to help be part of the change that is needed to increase equality and work with our diverse professionals to succeed and feel safe while doing so.  This roundtable discussion on Race in Athletic Training is a starting point and we can’t think Krystal, Ryan, Mercedes, Andrew, Brandon, Susan, Mike and Austin for being a part of the conversation and education.  We held this roundtable to listen, learn, and find opportunities to try and make things better.   #blacklivesmatter, racism and hate are still a problem. We need to do better and look forward to the opportunities to continue the conversation and do our part to make things better.   Please find more resources in the notes and on the webpage for this episode.    www.athletictrainingchat.com    www.cliniallypressed.com/throwalifeline      SUBSCRIBE:https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCc3WyCs2lmnKK6shrL5A4hw?sub_confirmation=1      #ATchat #ATC #atimpact #at4all #boc #bocatc #athletictraining #advocate #athletictrainingchat #health #medicine #medical #medicalprofessional #professional #LAT #ATSarehealthcare #builtinsport #muellerready #complicatedsimple #services #atservices #attwitter #nata #edac #BLM #blacklivesmatter #racism #equality #community #change #listen #conversations

Guido Van Ryssegem is a certified athletic training along with a registered nurse among so many other things. Guido has a really unique story to getting where he is. That has led him to finding a really deep and unique way to look at movement and athletic training. Guido focuses on proprioception, dynamic systems theory and other high level movement concepts when working with his athletes. In this episode we get deep into proprioception. So deep into what it is and how we should be training it we didn’t have enough time. We also didn’t get to the AT Chat questions because Guido had so much good information to share. Ep. 76: Karli Collins-AT & EMT
Karli Collins has done a little bit of everything in her career thus far and continues to do so. We got to sit down with Karli and we covered a range of topics. The main topic we focused on what the EMT certification that Karli obtained early in her career and has kept up with. The EMT certification isn’t overly common in the athletic training community but there are professionals that have it and it could make sense for an AT to have that skill set. Karli provides great and unique insight into that topic of conversation. We also discuss the transition in education that the profession is going through and how that impact many of the future professionals in athletic training. With most programs being 2+ years with so much information to teach, is it possible to get everything in? Should we be getting everything in during that time and where/how does it all fit? Some unique perspective on how it could all work and potential priority to certain aspects of what athletic trainers do. Ep. 61: Joel Luedke-Empowering AT Leadership
Roles got reversed in this episode as Austin and Greg interview Joel. Joel has talked for more recently about the importance of looking at AT Services, not AT Servants and the importance of working “with” coaches and fellow administrators, not “for” them. This has been a shift that has been occurring over Joel’s last 4-5 years of practice in the profession. The shift in thinking began when Joel started leading a group of ATs and started to see the amount of service and hours being requested of them didn’t match the compensation, not even close. The realization that while we can’t always control the salary we can control the hours to make that salary meaningful and allow time for a person to find alternative work. It also happened when changing the mindset to working “with” coaches and that while we are a service industry, professional courtesy can and should happen. Being adaptable is what ATs do, but that has to go both ways. Finally, we talk about ideas to help empower ATs moving forward and what research and education could be helpful. So many seemingly ‘small things’ that can have such a deep impact on so many, it has to be recognized. Ep.
There are becoming an endless variety of settings for athletic trainers to work in. Coming up in a lot of young careers are the idea of working in Division I and the professional ranks. These goals are not bad in any regard but they may not always be what they think and there can be a misconception of working at other places that could provide just as unique and rewarding experiences. In this short episode we talk about the Division III experience and how it has been going for Austin who is just finishing up a semester long immersion and Joel, who has been in this setting for the past 6 years. Ep. 25: Cody Tesch-ATC in Fire Service
Emerging settings in athletic training continue to evolve and in some cases they have ‘emerged’ (listen to the episode). Cody Tesch is on the front end of one of those settings, fire services. Cody is one of a handful of full-time athletic trainers that are dedicated to the service and care of a city’s fire fighter services and the steps Cody has made and where things are going are set to make an impact. In this episode we talk about what exactly Cody’s role in this type of setting is. We get very deep into how it has taken some effort for Cody to establish himself as a resource for this group and had to fight some long-held beliefs. Ep. 24: Joanne Kinyon-Collaborative Medical Model in the High School Setting
A collaborative medical model is ideal in so many settings. It takes a lot to get it there though. Not only do you have to have the resources to make it happen you have to find the right people that want to work together. In this episode we get to talk to Joanne Kinyon, an athletic trainer, who works at Bishop O Dowd High School. While BOD is not your “typical” high school the model they have established can be applied a lot of places. We talk about ideas on how schools on almost any level can look at nutrition, strength and conditioning and monitoring. All these factors can be looked at and set up for little to no cost. The creative ways that BOD has implemented multiple processes that allow for the entire staff to help the athletes not only achieve a high level of performance but also to recovery and reduce injury risk. Great take away ideas from this episode. Ep. 22: Ryan Gaffney-AT Advocate: Athlete to Business
Ryan Gaffney isn’t an athletic trainer but he does think the profession is one that deserves more attention and credit for what they bring to the table. We connected with Ryan after he tagged us in a post about ATCs in the industrial setting. Ryan played hockey in college and in juniors and had a couple great interactions with athletic trainers that helped him out through some pretty significant injuries. We also talk about the importance of athletic trainers in the business and industrial setting. Ryan has seen this importance with a previous guest, Andrea Dosedla, but also as a small business owner is seeing the importance for himself. We talk about ideas and mindsets that athletic trainers need to highlight to break into this setting and have a major impact. Ep. 21: Ryan Stevens-cATalyzing
Advocating for the athletic training is as important now as it has ever been. There have been several avenues that people have worked through in order to get the word out about athletic training and what the profession can do. In this episode we got to talk with Ryan Stevens, host of cATalyzing Podcast and Manager of Rehab Services (among other things) at RWJ Somerset and RWJ Hamilton hospitals. In this episode we discussed what Ryan sees as some of the ‘other’ areas of athletic training that need to be addressed by the profession to help it keep growing and show how we can help a variety of people We also discuss the importance of ego and being able to check it at the door in order to learn from other professions and compliment each other. There are a lot of great ideas that people can focus on to try and help not only grow themselves but help the profession continue to advance. www.athletictrainingchat.com www.cliniallypressed.com SUBSCRIBE:https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCc3WyCs2lmnKK6shrL5A4hw?sub_confirmation=1 #ATchat #ATC #atimpact #at4all #boc #bocatc #athletictraining #athletictrainingchat #health #medicine #medical #medicalprofessional #professional #LAT #ATSarehealthcare #builtinsport #muellerready #complicatedsimple #professional #ConEd #professionaldevelopment #collaboration #interprofessional #intraprofessional #pt #chiro #physician

Ep. 20: Athletic Training and Youth Sports
Protecting our youth athletes isn't a simple task. With so many things going on and pressures from coaches coming from all directions to make sure that they are putting all their effort into that sport or that team. It is important for parents, coaches and others to look out for these athletes and make sure that we aren't overworking our young athletes. This is where the role of the athletic trainer can be huge. Ep. 15: Athletic Training Tape-Richard Avis of Mueller Sports Medicine
Athletic tape (and all the other variations) are a staple of the athletic training profession. It is used every day and in a variety of situations. It started with just a couple of options for the professional to choose from but now the options are endless. There are over 40 versions of white tape alone. In this episode we talk again with Richard Avis of Mueller Sports Medicine about all the qualities that go into creating and selecting tape. Mueller has worked on figuring out how to break tape down with science and allowing athletic trainers to know exactly what they like and don’t like with tape, even if they didn’t know they liked or disliked it. Richard has done a little bit of everything when it comes to product development and marketing but also did his schooling in athletic training. Ep. 14: ESPN Article-ATC Leadership
ESPN recently put out an article and video on Outside the Lines highlighting some of the issues that come along when coaches clout starts to influence how athletic trainers do their job. The story was based on a survey by the NATA looking at athletic training interaction with coaches and administrators and how that effected their ability to practice and if there was any interference. The results were shocking. In this short episode we do a quick talk on these issues and some of things we are looking at in how “the tides can be turned”. We discussed how we can see ourselves on the same level as coaches and why it is important to make sure we are establishing that we work “with” our coaches and not “for” coaches. Some of these simple words can have deep meaning when it comes to how you are perceived and how you perceive yourself.
