S4E5: Sabbath Rest - A Palace in Time

S4E5: Sabbath Rest - A Palace in Time

Welcome back to The AUSA Podcast! Today, Luke and Brenna sit down to chat a bit about Rest to try and help re-orient our mindsets heading into break. Luke talks through some ideas from Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel's wonderful little book, "The Sabbath," like how the Sabbath is a palace in time and not only that, but a person who is with and within us (Matthew 11:28-30); how it's holistic to all that a person is and doesn't just heal or minister to the spiritual or the physical, but both; and how rest can look differently for everyone! Brenna and Luke give some examples of how they rest and what rest does for them.

S4E4: Psalm 16, Psalm 27, and "The Comfortable Words"

S4E4: Psalm 16, Psalm 27, and "The Comfortable Words"

Welcome back to The AUSA Podcast. Life doesn't always feel easy, and lately, it seems like it's felt pretty hard for a lot of people. As we were brainstorming this week's episode, we noticed that the tone of our team and our campus has felt really heavy the past two weeks. Because of that, Brenna and Luke decided to sit down and read some Scripture over anyone who needs it. They read Psalm 16 and Psalm 27, and future-Luke reads The Comfortable Words, a few sentences from throughout Scripture that remind us of the comfort found in the Gospel.

Editor's note: Hey, Luke here. I cried a little while reading Psalm 16. I wanted to leave it in because 1) let's normalize guys crying and 2) right now my heart is not glad, and Scripture, the psalms especially, is not supposed to be neat and tidy, it isn't always supposed to be happily read and regarded, and it definitely doesn't shy away from our emotions. So we shouldn't either.

S3E10: Hospitality Part 4 - The Gospel Comes With A House Key

Welcome to this week's episode of The AUSA Podcast! Today, we're beginning to wrap up the series on "hospitality"  we've been in for the past couple weeks. In our second to last episode of the series, Brenna and Luke sit down with an Anderson University and Campus Activities Team alum, Sam Walker, to talk about the ways that hospitality is linked to the Gospel and Way of Jesus. We discuss what it looks like to lovingly host (in homes and hearts) those you "would rather be able to dislike;" how we can live out the miracles of Jesus in an every day, non-miraculous way; and what it means to be changed by radically ordinary hospitality.

Thanks for listening! We'll see you next week.

S3E5: The Art of Having a Good Bad Day - Facing Grief, Disappointment, and Suffering

Welcome to this week's episode of The AUSA Podcast! This is a conversation we've been wanting to have on the pod here for a while, and this season we finally felt poised well enough to do it. It's a pretty real and raw one, so strap in.

This week, Dr. Wyma, a professor at AU, and Luke talk about suffering, disappointment, grief, and asking for help. Ultimately, this episode is about how to handle a bad day — to clarify, we’re using “bad day” as a sort of shorthand for a difficult time of disappointment, grief, struggle, heartache, and so on. We walk through some appropriate (and inappropriate) responses to and about God in the face of suffering, how to manage bad days maturely and wisely, what Jesus' human experience means for our grief and sadness, and how to show compassion to ourselves and others in the midst of suffering. Thanks for listening!

S3E4: Changing Course (For the Better)

Welcome to this week's episode of The AUSA Podcast! Today, Brenna and Luke sit down with Braelyn and Drew to talk about change. Change can be scary, but it's important to view it in proper perspective. All four of us changed majors in college (whether just once or a few times), so we wanted to try and dispel some of the stress and stigma around making that decision. From there, we talk about change in a broader sense — how to prepare for it, how to meet it, and how to manage it. Thanks for listening! See you next week.

S2E13: Redemption and Recreation

S2E13: Redemption and Recreation

Hey everyone! Welcome to this week's episode of The AUSA Podcast! This is our last conversation about culture making, so we're a little bit sad, but we couldn't have ended it any better. This we talk with Sylvia Swords and Dr. Turner, a professor at AU, about the culmination of God's project and partnership with humanity — the redemption and recreation of all things!

We begin by looking back over the season and recapping what we've talked about. Then, for the majority of the episode, we take a big picture look at the biblical story, tracing themes and literary design patterns through Genesis, Psalms, Isaiah, and Revelation to find out what God has intends the ultimate end of culture making to be. We dive into why this is important for us as we create and cultivate culture, what it means to have hope in light of this New Creation, why it's important that God retains and redeems the things that humanity has made along with humanity itself, and why Christians shouldn't postpone this recreation to some far off and mysterious day way in the future.

Thank you all so much for being a part of this conversation about culture making. At the end of the day, all of this is much less about a good book or a witty turn of phrase and much more about exploring the riches and depths of the central thread of the biblical story. That is, embracing and trusting the God who so giddily and lovingly wants to invite his people back into partnership with him and into a role in a grand, cosmic project — from Abraham to Jesus to you and I.

We think culture making is very important, so if you enjoyed this episode or anything peaked your interest, we'd love to start a conversation! Do us a favor and share it with your friends, and if you have thoughts or questions you can DM us on Instagram @au411. Thanks for listening!

S2E12: Jesus as The Culture Maker

S2E12: Jesus as The Culture Maker

Hey everyone! Welcome to this week's episode of The AUSA Podcast! This week we begin to wrap up our conversation about culture making with our friend and fellow CAT, Drew Correll! In this episode, we take a look at the life of our favorite Culture Maker, a Middle Eastern Jewish Rabbi/Tradesman named Jesus — or rather, Yeshua Bar-Yosef. That name might seem strange to you, but that's okay. Often, we can think of Jesus as human, but we don't actually connect that truth to anything tangible. Instead, Jesus becomes only theoretically a human, instead of a bronze-skinned carpenter with curly, short hair and calloused hands, laugh lines by his smile and crow's feet by his eyes. Even less often do we recognize that along with Jesus’ humanity came a cultural inheritance — that is, an identity and heritage rooted in making something of the world. That cultural inheritance looks like the specific cultural tradition of a family, a language, a people, a history, a religion, a nation.
We take a look into the life and ministry of Jesus to learn something valuable about "culture making." Jesus was a cultivator of culture, spending most of his time on earth (30 years of his life!) not teaching or healing, but absorbing, practicing, and passing on his Jewish culture's traditions and practices. Jesus was also a creator of culture who, after years of waiting and watching, finally reinterprets his culture's way of making something of the world, and he echoes God’s plan and design for humanity while recasting it in radically new ways that had been shoved aside or ignored by the teachers of the day.
Jesus also shows us that the model for culture making in the image of God is less about power and more about surrender and trust. In and by his death, Jesus surrendered both his human and divine creative power; in and by his resurrection, Jesus declared (and modeled) ultimate dependence of God.
We see that Jesus doesn't abandon the old, setting it aside as dusty and outdated; he transforms it in an act of overflowing love and vulnerable trust. In and by Christ, even the cross — the worst that culture can do and the one thing that symbolizes all that deserves to be pushed to the outskirts of our cultural memory — is celebrated and transformed into a sign of victory, trust, forgiveness, mercy, and love.
We think culture making is very important, so if you enjoyed this episode or anything peaked your interest, we'd love to start a conversation! Do us a favor and share it with your friends, and if you have thoughts or questions you can DM us on Instagram @au411. Thanks for listening!

S2E11: You and I As Culture Makers

S2E11: You and I As Culture Makers

Hey friends! Welcome back to The AUSA Podcast! This week we continue our conversation about culture making with our friend and fellow CAT, Corey Adams! In this episode, we talk about how to identify where you hold influence, what that means, and we go through some of the qualities of a good leader. Once you realize the places and groups you influence it can be daunting to navigate that responsibility, so this episode is for you — people who need a little push to realize that they are a leader, and people figuring out how to lead well.

Whether we feel like it or not, know it or not, or want to be or not, we are all influencing somebody else. It's important to be aware of this so we can do it well and set the tone of the spaces we are a part of rather than just going with the flow. That's ultimately what culture making (our responsibility of creating new things and cultivating already existing things to be better and more beautiful) is all about — being a thermostat, not a thermometer; being active rather than reactive.

S2E10: Social Media Culture

Welcome to this week’s episode of The AUSA Podcast! This week we continue our conversation about culture making with Katelyn Bass, the social media manager for @au411, and Braelyn Moore, one of our event coordinators! Today, we sit down to take a look at social media to talk about the good, the bad, and the ugly. We discuss the things that social media makes possible — from good things like education, advocacy, connection, and creative inspiration to bad things like insecurity, comparison, skewed expectations for yourself and others, and hustle culture. We get personal this episode, sharing stories from our own life of the ways we use to view social media, how that effected how we viewed ourselves and others, and how we broke out of that wrong thinking. We also look at the beautiful things about social media! We talk about what it looks like to create new things and cultivate already existent things to be better and more beautiful within a digital context, and how we can find freedom in that.

S2E9: Campus Ministries and Culture

Welcome to The AUSA Podcast! For the first half of this season, we took a look at the ins and outs of culture making—we've talked about creating and ruling, attitudes and actions, collaboration, and more. For these past few episodes, we wanted to take a look at the more practical side. This week we sit with James Hanson to talk a bit about the ways that Campus Ministries seeks to create and cultivate culture here on campus. We talk (again) about setting boundaries so that creativity and community can flourish; what partnership and collaboration looks like in ministry; what a call to discipleship means for you and I; and what it means to actually do the things we were called ago and equipped for.

We think culture is very important, so if you enjoyed this episode or anything peaked your interest, we'd love to start a conversation! Do us a favor and share it with your friends, and if you have thoughts or questions, you can DM us on Instagram @au411. Thanks for listening!

We talk about setting boundaries—both individually and collectively—so that creativity and community can flourish; what partnership and collaboration looks like between students and faculty/staff; what it looks like to handle conflict and discipline in a way that honors God's design for human relationships, and more!

We think culture is very important, so if you enjoyed this episode or anything peaked your interest, we'd love to start a conversation! Do us a favor and share it with your friends, and if you have thoughts or questions, you can DM us on Instagram @au411. Thanks for listening!

S2E6: Gestures and Postures

S2E6: Gestures and Postures

Welcome to this week’s episode of The AUSA Podcast! This week we continue our conversation about culture making with Matthew McCall, talking about Gestures and Postures—or, in more accessible language, Actions and Attitudes. Think of a posture as your heart and mind's attitude toward something, the way you're positioned; think of a gesture as an overflowing of that attitude into your everyday actions. In other words, your attitude and your actions. We begin by breaking down the reasons behind why the cultural postures of condemning, critiquing, copying, or consuming culture aren't enough for creating change, and we look at the different gestures that flow from them. We chat a bit about the book of James and look at the relationship between the heart and the hands. Gestures can be good indicators of an unhealthy (or healthy) posture, and a lack of action might be symptomatic of some deeper problems—especially for the Christian who isn't doing his Faith.

We end by talking about how a new posture changes your gestures, but the way to change posture is to alter your gestures. In other words, the best way to change your attitude so that you can actually engage with culture in a healthy way and create new things is to actually do things. If you want to incite any lasting change, you need to use creativity—you need to actually create new culture.

We think culture is very important, so if you enjoyed this episode or anything peaked your interest, we'd love to start a conversation! Do us a favor and share it with your friends, and if you have thoughts or questions, you can DM us on Instagram @au411. Thanks for listening!

S2E5: Partnership and Collaboration

S2E5: Partnership and Collaboration

Welcome to this week’s episode of The AUSA Podcast! Today, we continue our conversation about culture making with our friend and fellow member of the CAT, Booker! Join us as we sit down to talk about two things: divine partnership and human collaboration. We take a look at Genesis 2 (again, it's just that good!) to see how God invites Man into partnership with Him from the very beginning: He wants Man to participate in this project that He has started. God realizes that it is not good for Man to be alone, so He makes a helper—the Hebrew word here, "ezer," is actually more of a military term that means "deliverer"—for him, Woman, so that he can have someone to work alongside as he works with God.

We talk about how the means by which the Bible was created reinforces this idea that God wants to partner with humanity, and we track this theme all the way through the Bible until we arrive at Jesus, where divine partnership and human collaboration culminate in his ministry. After Jesus leaves his disciples, they continue the blending of partnership and collaboration by furthering the Church with the "help" (a similar idea to "ezer" from Genesis) of the Holy Spirit. We end out the episode by outlining some benefits of collaboration, and thinking through some practical ways that we can fight pride and cultivate attitudes of partnership and collaboration in our own lives. Thanks for listening!

We think culture is very important, so if you enjoyed this episode or anything peaked your interest, we'd love to start a conversation! Do us a favor and share it with your friends, and if you have thoughts or questions, you can DM us on Instagram @au411. Thanks for listening!

S2E4: Artists and Gardeners

S2E4: Artists and Gardeners

Welcome to this week’s episode of The AUSA Podcast! Today, we continue our conversation about culture making with Lindsey Gatlin! Join us as we sit down to talk about creativity, cultivation, leadership, prayer, and wisdom. If God is a Creator and a Ruler, then so are we. And if we are Creators and Rulers, then we are Artists and Gardeners. Because we are created in God's image and likeness, we have a responsibility to create and cultivate—to both make culture and keep culture. In this episode, we talk about what it looks like to be practiced in and receptive to the skills of creating and cultivating, and we translate the idea of being Artists and Gardeners into a culturally creative context.

We break down the ways that Artists and Gardeners see and go about the world, and we explore the ways in which we can do that ourselves—the ways in which we can actually do something to influence culture. Creativity is the only way to incite lasting change, and we cannot create without cultivation. We think culture is very important, so if you enjoyed this episode or anything peaked your interest, we'd love to start a conversation!

S2E3: Creators and Rulers

S2E3: Creators and Rulers

Welcome to this week’s episode of The AUSA Podcast! Today, we continue our conversation about culture making with Drew Correll, breaking down Genesis 1-2 to take a look at our responsibility as individuals created in the image and likeness of God. The opening pages of the Bible make a bold claim that invites us to rethink what being human means: God wants to partner with us in creation, and he created us like him in order that we can do so. We are made in the image of God—we communicate a representative relationship from God toward creation as rulers over the earth. And we are made in the likeness of God—we are expressions of God’s creative power and are privileged in sharing in everything God is and does as we create and rule alongside him.

We answer the question, “What image of God is conveyed in the first pages of the Bible?” and talk a little bit about what the image of God even is, discussing some the context of the time Genesis was written. We discover that God is both Creator and Ruler—breather of possibilities and setter of limits. We explore how Christ is a fulfillment of both of these things—image and likeness—and begin to look at next week’s question, “How do we take part in the renewed projects of creation and ambassadorship through Jesus?”

We think culture is very important, so if you enjoyed this episode or anything peaked your interest, we'd love to start a conversation! Do us a favor and share it with your friends, and if you have thoughts or questions, you can DM us on Instagram @au411. Thanks for listening!

S2E2: What is culture?

S2E2: What is culture?

Welcome back to The AUSA Podcast! Join Brenna, Luke, Annalee, and Michael as we begin this season's discussion on culture and culture making by looking at some of the different definitions of "culture" that were presented by you guys! You submitted some great thoughts to our Instagram Story, but for the purposes of this season, we focus in on one specific definition—"culture is what human beings make of the world." We talk about how we as Christians should engage with culture, what cultural change can look like, what the possibilities of limitations allow. We close out by taking one of our events—Food Truck Pop-Up—and running it through a few questions for diagnosing culture.

Like she mentioned in the episode, if you want a copy of "Culture Making," go ahead and email Brenna at bmorris@andersonuniversity.edu! S2E1: Meet Isabel & A Peek Into Season 2

Welcome back to The AUSA Podcast, we're very excited to kick off our second season! We kinda sorta miss winter break—we hope everyone's was sweet and restful—but we're so glad to be back. Hopefully you all had a BLAST during Winter Welcome Week and a not-too-crazy first week of classes! Join Brenna and Luke as they introduce the newest member of the CAT, Isabel (not to be confused with Isabella)! Isabel talks a bit about herself and the time she spent in Kenya over break, and then we move into a discussion on what this season of the podcast will look like!

We believe that no matter your vocation, major, or role on campus, we are all called to creating and cultivating culture, and that mostly, whether we know it or not, we are always doing something to affect the spaces and people around us. This season, we want to take a look at some of the ways different organizations and individuals on campus think of and go about culture making—Student Activities, Residence Life, Student Development, Campus Ministries, Student Government, etc. Of course, we'll flesh out that term a little more before we get started, but we're excited for this season and we hope you are too!

S1E14: Shifting Rhythms and A Rule of Life

S1E14: Shifting Rhythms and A Rule of Life

Welcome back to The AUSA Podcast for our final episode this season! For our last week, Brenna is joined by Luke, Parker, and Isabella for a conversation about rhythms. Everyone has rhythms, and whether you make it a point to practice them or not, they affect how you interact with God, yourself, and the world. What we do forms us into who we are, so it’s important to be mindful about those practices (again, intentional or not) that are shaping us. We talk about what rhythms we have in place, how we prioritize practicing rhythms, how we feel when those rhythms change, and how we combat the shift that comes with break.

From all of us non the Student Activities team, have such a restful break! We are grateful for all of you, and if break is particularly hard for you, know you’re not alone. The holidays can be tricky and messy for a lot of people—some of your Student Activities friends included—so we get it. You’ve got this! Finish strong on your finals and rest it up over winter break. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for listening in to a great season, and for being patient as we get this thing started. We’ll see you next semester with more episodes and more events!

After a week off, welcome back to The AUSA Podcast! We hope you enjoyed our series on Rest, Work, and Play. Happy Thanksgiving Week! We’re sad that we’ve only got one episode left in the season after this, but we’re very excited for turkey and parades and football and family and friends and…. This week, Brenna is joined by Braelyn, Michael, Kat, and Annalee to talk all things Thanksgiving. Of course, we touch on the favorite foods and beloved traditions, but we also chat about the ways in which the holiday season can be hard, the necessity for thankfulness and gratitude year round, and what those practices of gratitude might look like!

Unfortunately, since we’re moving into break, we don’t have any events to keep you up to date on. We are grateful for all of you though, and we hope that you have an amazing Turkey Day with the people you love. If Thanksgiving is particularly hard for you, know you’re not alone. The holidays can be tricky and messy for a lot of people—some of your Student Activities friends included—so we get it. You’ve got this! Finish strong on your finals and rest it up over winter break. Welcome back to The AUSA Podcast! Today, we’re kicking off another series. We don’t want to get ahead of ourselves, so we’ll just say that this one is sort of about life as a college student. For this first episode, Luke and Brenna sit down with one of our CATs, Lindsey Gatlin, to chat about Rest—what it is, what it isn’t, why it’s important, and how we can practice it! So often we can get bogged down in the busyness of life as a student that we forget to take time to just be still and silent, to recharge, and we become burnt out, irritable, and scattered. Join us as we talk about Rest and share some ways that we practice Sabbath week-to-week. As always, we end out the episode by giving an overview of all of this week's events!
