“These are all components we experience that vary from the neuromajority sexual experience. Autism Stories: David Crisp
“Particularly in the medical profession, sometimes the answer is to want to physically do something, to fix something, to want to make something better. It’s not meant in a negative way, but sometimes the answer is to stand back, give it a couple of minutes, and see what happens. If they calm down on their own, they don’t need medication,” says David Crisp. Davis joins this episode to discuss autism-specific training for frontline staff in the health and social care sectors. He also talks about over 109 trainings that he has completed in learning to support other autistic people. To learn more about David and Wired 4 Autism visit https://wired4autism.co.uk. "Astrology I now know is undoubtedly my special interest. It was bringing me back to life while I was learning about it, and learning about it was unpacking all my trauma and helping me see parts of myself that I'd never been able to either acknowledge at all before or was seeing in a much more healthy light,” says Colleen Harrison. Autism Stories: Purple Ella
“I've lived a really long time not knowing that I'm autistic. Since people weren't being diagnosed with autism when I was a child, that must mean there's actually loads of people like me out there who are autistic and either haven't realized or are just finding out. Maybe it would be useful if I talk about it on the internet?” says Purple Ella. Ella Ella joins this episode to discuss being a digital content creator in regards to discussing her autism, ADHD, and chronic illness. Autism Stories: Olivia McAdams
"In many anime and manga, there are characters with disabilities, but for the majority, either they're used as a reason for the main character to protect the evils of the world from. Usually, as the stories progress, they fade into the background. That wasn't the case with Code Gease,” says Olivia McAdams. Autism Stories: Sonny Hallet
"We noticed at that point there were, anecdotally, trends in the community, which both I'd experienced and other people have experienced around not being able to access mental health services, and also, having very negative experiences if they had access to mental health services. We wanted to see, basically, how much that was anecdotal or how much that was a trend,” says Sonny Hallett. Sonny joins this episode of Autism Stories to discuss being part of a committee that developed a report regarding the problems with mental health support for autistic people, their work as a counselor, and how to identify training that is helpful to autistic people. Autism Stories: Jude Morrow
“One of the sexist marketing words in the world people view is neurodiversity, but it's so much more than that. It's more than a marketing word, it's more than just a nice concept to put in your advertising in a bid to get more people in. Because you can see very quickly the people that have taken this approach: oh, let's just scribble out autism and just put neurodiversity there,” says Jude Morrow. Jude to discuss businesses that are truly supporting autistic and neurodivergent minds, changing careers from a social worker to a CEO, and about the NYC Autism Tech, Innovation, and Career Expo in which he will be a keynote speaker for the event this May. "What I find a lot with the autistic community, is that it's really hard for us to break through that, what I nicknamed, the puzzle piece ceiling. "In fact, being able to have some respect for another person, and to feel understood by them, is really important from a clinical perspective, therapeutically. That if you don't like one just find another one that suites you better," says Scott Allen. Scott joins this episode of Autism Stories to talk about his job as a counselor. Autism Stories: Cole Sorensen
"That's one of the big things that special education programs can do. Design your curriculum with the assumption that some of the people you're talking about might actually be in the classroom with you. If you think that your curriculum might be uncomfortable for a disabled person to sit through, that's a sign that there's an issue with your curriculum, not that the disabled student doesn't belong there," says Cole Sorensen. Cole joins this episode of Autism Stories to discuss his experience of studying special education in college and some of the myths of independent living. "I decided that I really wanted to write a film that explains autism, but shows it in a normal light, like it's something that's no big deal. Because, yes, even though the selling point of my film is that she is autistic, it's still a normal relationship. And I don't feel like a lot of media surrounding autism presents autism in that way," says Rebecca Faith Quinn. Autism Stories: Dr. Aimee Grant
""Although it's a biological function, it's not something straight forward. It's not that you just hover the baby somewhere near the breast and it works. There's a complex range of positioning, attachment, the baby's suck needs to be right. Often, babies are born with an extra little piece of skin under their tongue. That means that their tongue can't move enough to actually help release milk," says Dr. Aimee Grant. Autism Stories: Sydney Edmond
"It wasn’t until I was 10 years old that I was introduced to supported typing and Alternative Augmented Communication, or AAC. By having the tactile input I needed, I was able to point to letters on a letterboard, to say exactly what I wanted to say, how I wanted to say it. For the first time, I was able to fully express myself. I soon learned to type on a keyboard with voice output, so it would speak aloud what I had typed. Then I began taking mainstream classes, and I took poetry, and speaking at conferences. And now, at last, I became a contributing member of society. I want to say that, in spite of my great love for writing and painting, my greatest passion is to speak out, to make AAC a mainstream part of the school system so it will be available for everyone. This is where my autism story began to have wings," says Sydney Edmond. Sydney joins this episode of Autism Stories to discuss her advocating work  for the use of AAC , her love of painting and writing, and being a contributor to the book "Life after Lockdown" that resets perceptions of autism. "My work is very sensory. I experience and respond to the world very directly through my senses, and as I'm speaking to you or when I write, it is actually a translation. My words are not directly from my immediate experience. I feel that my work and my work with Simon expresses the rich and abundant ecology that is outside neurotypical expression. "I wasn't a natural athlete at 4 years old. I'm still not a natural athlete to this day. It's all about understanding and being able to speak in the language that your students understand, and that's a language that is inherent. Being autistic is my natural language, so it definitely is an advantage comparing to people who are not on the spectrum. There's more of a learning curve, whereas it just naturally clicks for me when someone on the spectrum needs an instruction," says Andrew Ackner. "There is so much more to being a PDAer than just demand avoidance. There's this incredible, insistent, inherent drive for equity, equality, social justice. There's this beautiful sensitivity, and, again, this incredible, persistent drive for autonomy and freedom. The one thing I will say though is I really respect the way the research is conducted around PDA. There is an active involvement with those who identify or are recognized as PDAers," says Kristy Forbes. ""I did some time at university, and everything was really structured and regimented- you have to write it this way, you need to have an outline, you need to have a thesis, you need to have your three main points, and it all needs to flow together...and I'm like, "What? I'm really, really struggling." But I think with poetry, it didn't call for any of those things. It called for me to get out of my own way, my heart to open up, to let my heart do the talking and, more importantly, the writing," says Amanda Harrinauth. "Everything should be in plain language when it comes to the law. I don't think you should need a law degree to understand what the supreme court does. For clients that have intellectual disabilities, differences in processing, I think its super helpful. It's not making it age appropriate per se. I think there's this thing that happens in plain language where we think that it basically means that we can't talk about adult things. It means that anyone can understand a very adult thing," says Haley Moss. "A whole lifelong developmental embodying experience, when you look at the black community and they talk about passing, the LGBTQIA community and they talk about the closet. "I don't think there is anyone that specializes in money and autistics. If there is a money topic, its a general or  boring money topic thats usually directed more at parents of children with high support needs. There was a gap and I think that gap comes from the way autistics learn, pick up information, and the way we are not taught towards that," says Becca Lory Hector and Andrew Komarow. Autism Stories: Seavie Bodeen
"The medical model is really set up for non-disabled people to access healthcare. One of the biggest things is communication. It's sort of assumed that speaking words and hearing them without delay is preferred by everyone. It's just not true. Asking the person how they best process information and asking their preferred method of  communication is so often missed.
