" I really hate when somebody messages you and they're like, "We need to talk." Because immediately I'm like, "Oh my god! What did I do? Did I screw up? What's going on?" She always gives me an agenda of any meeting we're gonna have, anything that's going on beforehand, these are the things we're gonna talk about, just so I don't internally freak out", says Arianna Faye Davidson. Autism Stories: Destiny Huff
"Almost every new parent I speak to will go, "The doctor said they need 40 hours of this therapy, this therapy, this therapy, this therapy etc." And I'm like that's kind of what they've been told could benefit, but we know that 40 hours of any therapy in a week is just excessive and too much", says Destiny Huff. "It is important to point out that each one of us has a vocation in our particular state in life, whether clergy, religious, or layperson, whether single, married, or consecrated. Moreover, autistic people have the vocation of being authentically autistic members of the Body. Whatever we do, whatever talents we have, and however we are called to share them for the glory of God, we do through the lens of our autistic processing and autistic processing and autistic communication", says Aimee O'Connell. Autism Stories: Ryan Haenze
"I realized just how systemic ableism was in our special ed system. And it was really disheartening, really seeing just how drastically different my students were treated, how I was treated, how how I didn't get the same curriculum to provide them as their non-disabled peers. And so, I said, I'm going to leave. [...] And I was looking for advocacy", says Ryan Haenze. Autism Stories: Sam Marion
"I pivoted from trauma therapy into supporting a lot of neurodiverse folks and families. What I found was it's a really seamless transition because of principles that I already leaned on heavily as a trauma therapist. Choice is a big deal. The number one thing that leads to trauma imprint on anybody is a loss of agency", says Sam Marion. Sam joins this episode to discuss providing trauma informed support and writing a book for educators wanting to take a neurodivergent affirming approach. Autism Stories: Marisa Hamamoto
"I'd had this burning desire, or I just knew it was my destiny to do something at the intersection of dance and disability, and I saw a gap. More than anything, I saw a gap. I was like, wow, I didn't know that one in four Americans had a disability, and that's 61 million Americans", says Marisa Hamamoto. Autism Stories: Haley Morgan
"It would be an essential part of any decent person-centered care to find out what co-occuring conditions are there. Any good midwife would know those. But I think the rates of how much more likely autistic people are to experience those issues, I think having a care plan without taking those things into consideration would be quite risky, at best", says Haley Morgan. Autism Stories: Drew Adamick
"I do think everyone needs a financial plan and I would say those that have precarious income or inconsistent income need a plan even more so. This has been one of the huge challenges in the industry. The way I say it is, the people that need advice the most are the ones that can't really afford to traditionally get it. One of the things I'm doing to give back as well, in addition to my own personal practice," says Drew Adamick. Autism Stories: Laura Hellfeld
"Their nervous system's been dysregulated for such a long time, everything gets thrown off, including the circadian rhythm. So, it makes sense that someone might need to be eating at times they didn't before, and that includes overnight, in order to keep their blood sugar at a decent level so that way they can sleep", says Laura Hellfeld. "I'll be honest, I've had a really great journey so far. ASD Band has its ups and downs. And on top of that, being autistic has a unique dimension to our creative process. Autism Stories: Stephanie Minaya
"So I was in the corporate world at this time about a year ago, working about 13 to 16 hours a day and just really not enjoying something that I thought I would. I got into research. I thought I would love it. I still do, luckily. But I was just so burnt out. And I was looking for something that could really bring me back to what it felt like I was. And so I stumbled across birds again. [...] It was a love that I had as a child that I was able to reinvigorate and pulled me out of some very dark, dark periods", says Stephanie Minaya. Autism Stories: Jessica Michaels
"To me, the key is the manager, honestly. When you think about somebody's experience with a company, their direct supervisor provides about 80% of that experience with the company. So, if the company's fantastic, but you have a manager who isn't understanding, helpful, or inclusive, then it doesn't matter what the values are of that company. Because the person who is directly responsible for how you interact with the workplace...it can't make up for that", says Jessica Michaels. Autism Stories: Dr. Julius Johnson-Weaver
"Gender-affirming care saves lives. It allows people to align with their gender identity if they are born opposite of that. Providing that care prevents people from going on to have higher rates of anxiety, depression, suicidality, and successful suicide acts. We are saving lives when we treat people the way they are asking to be treated, and when we believe people", says Dr. Julius Johnson-Weaver. Dr. Johnson-Weaver joins this episode to discuss gender affirming care, and organizations whose actions match their words. To learn more about Dr. Julius Johnson-Weaver visit https://resolvemd.org .

Autism Stories Tina Beams
"I think one of the biggest things is understanding what stress is and how it works, and understanding what that is important to understand how to let it go. Stress works on a spectrum, too. It's a defense mechanism. It's telling you to pay attention. Sometimes it's a whisper and sometimes it's screaming at you to fight for your life or run like hell, kind of like a dimmer switch", says Tina Beams. "Do second guess your tendency to take people's words at face value. I know for me, I will sometimes have an instinct that somebody is lying to me. But if I ask them about it, and they just tell me that they're not lying, I'll just believe them! Because I tell the truth, and so, my automatic assumption is that other people are telling the truth", says Layla Messner. Autism Stories: Rebecca Cavender
"Snakes are so instinctual. I mean, all animals are, but snakes...they're elegant and magnificent. They know when to take time for themselves. They're not pack animals. I think as autistic people, we can probably identify with them too. We're very instinctive and a lot of us feel the environment around us acutely", says Rebecca Lavender. Autism Stories: Dr. Shannan Palma Part II
"Noise cancelling headphones? There's no noise in my house! I am all by myself- it's just me, the cats, and the dog! I put them on and I had this visceral, really strong reaction. I felt like I was going to cry. Because I realized I heard the lights, the neighbor mowing their lawn 3 houses down, the refrigerator...I heard everything", says Dr. Shannan Palma. Autism Stories: Alysia
"If their only images of what autism looks like are white, it can make them feel even more alienated. Even something as simple as when you're having autism awareness month in school, make sure not only highlighting Albert Einstein, but people like Stephen Wiltshire, or Questlove. Just show people who look like your student body, so they don't sort of attribute those strengths to whiteness, which can affect their self-esteem", says Alysia . Alysia joins this episode to discuss working as a speech language pathologist in a charter school and creating her spoken word poetry.

Autism Stories: Dr. Shannan Palma
"The people who make assumptions about social norms and generalizability, are also the people who create generalizable standards, right? I say this as a curriculum developer in my day job. The way that I work to design curriculum tends to be the opposite of how I see a lot of other curricula; other forms of teaching. Because we are centering neurodivergent learning styles", says Dr. Shannan Palma. Dr. Palma joins this episode to discuss improving the wellbeing of autistic people and how everything we are taught about gender and sexuality are wrong. Autism Stories: Tammy and Billy Mayfair
"In the beginning of golf, I happen to know that there were only 13 rules made. Now, there's a whole thick, little rule book of when, and if, and that, and lawyer language that nobody understands. Do I drop it here or not? It's yes or no. It should be black or white, but it's not", says Tammy Mayfair. Tammy and Billy Mayfair talk about how the rules of professional golf are really confusing, their experiences as an autistic and non-autistic couple being married, and the challenges of being a public figure as an autistic person.

Something I'm very passionate about, I've learned over the past three years, I love discussing about this, helping people, and to see little things that I can tell people that might help them along. Coming out with it was never a big issue", says Billy Mayfair. Billy oins this episode to discuss being a public figure and disclosing of his autism. Autism Stories: Shawn Thompson
"The place that I'm currently working is a hotbed for neurodivergence. A lot of folks there that kind of just understand a lot of things that are happening everyday. You'll see folks in the hall taking a stim break, and it's totally normal. Nobody's bothering them, or worried about what they're wearing, or what they're doing, as long as they're not hurting anybody. They're doing their job and finding their way in a career that suits them and their technical needs and resources", says Shawn Thompson. Shawn joins this episode to discuss working at an organization with neurodivergent affirming support. To learn more about Shawn visit https://www.linkedin.com/in/shawn-thompson-âûdhd-ctss-31885a13a/

Autism Stories: Nicole LeBlanc
" As we look at wrestling as a society with the complications of this virus, it's essential that autism, developmental disability, neurodiversity, be at the table. We're one of the populations that's most at risk for negative outcomes for this virus, both mental and physical. Nothing about us without us! We are not disposable", says Nicole LeBlanc. Nicole returns to Autism Stories to discuss the impact of Long COVID on autistic people and what can be done to possibly reduce these challenges. Autism Stories: Christiana Tunnicliffe
"I do think that we should definitely remind neurotypicals, gently, that it is absolutely okay to have autistic character headcanons. Because we don't have a lot of good representation for our groups in the media, whereas they get to see themselves represented in media almost all the time. It's not hurting you, or detracting from what you see in the character. If anything, it's actually a bridge", says Christiana Tunnicliffe. Christiana joins this episode of Autism Stories to talk about her podcast discussing how sociology of our real world translates to fantastical realms, Disney's representation of disabled characters, and her experience as the editor of the Autism Stories podcast. Autism Stories: Loren Snow
"It's at the start of session, I get a box of stim toys out. I go and put them on the desks, and then I sit down with the occupational therapists and the consultants. I start talking to them about it. They all look at me like, this is really, really weird, why are you talking about these things? But at the end of the session they're all playing with them! ", says Loren Snow. Loren joins this episode to discuss working with professionals and parents to support autistic children. We also discuss how meal time can be one of the most traumatic experiences at home and how to better support your autistic loves during these times. Autism Stories: Lianne McCray
"It's a gift to be able to say this isn't really right. How can we make this better? That's what I do with my clients. My goal as a doula is to make the world more accommodating, because I don't think the world is accommodating enough. I've had tons of experiences with what it's like to not be accommodated. If I can make anyone's experience on earth a little softer, and more friendly, that's what I want to do", says LIanne McCray. Lianne joins this episode to discuss being a doula. Autism Stories: Emily Archer
" Research is showing that there actually isn't a lot of benefit to homework. When I have parents request homework, I will send it, but I also encourage them to make it playful. Let's say I have some students struggling with reading basic sight words. I will send home those sight words they're struggling with. But I'll say, parents, instead of doing flash cards, to make it into a game. Hide the words around the house and make it a scavenger hunt", says Emily Archer. Emily joins this episode to discuss teaching autistic students, accommodations that are helpful to students on IEPs and 504 plans, and reducing their overwhelm at school. Autism Stories: Kaishawna
"Misconceptions of Deaf people is that hearing people, people who can hear around 100%, views would be that Deaf people cannot drive, read, write, understand English, and that is far from the truth. Being Deaf does not and should not hinder someone, yet it does, because of these stereotypes of what Deaf people can and cannot do", says Kaishawna. Autism Stories: Stephenie Calhoun
"There were great schools, but none of them were very neurodivergent-friendly. It was all very, very fast paced. You never really learn to talk to clients. You're just kind of given a dog. There will be 20 other students and one teacher and you just have to figure it out as you go. Even someone who was neurotypical, they were struggling with it", says Stephenie Calhoun. Stephenie joins this episode to discuss opening up a dog grooming academy, how her academy focuses on the needs of neurodiverse students, and the history of dogs and how they became domesticated. Autism Stories: Rabbi Simcha Weinstein
"Autistic students are very often not given services and supports that is evidence-based according to atypical evidence-based. Meaning that, very often, I think, autistic students on campus are expected to camoflauge, to mask, to fit in, to be like everyone else, as opposed to just be themselves", says Rabbi Simcha Weinstein. Rabbi Weinstein joins this episode to discuss being a college rabbi, founding the Jewish Autism Network, and the connection of superheroes and marginalized people. Autism Stories: Bijhan Agha
"Because I'm autistic, I avoided a lot of games that involve reading people's faces. I was really averse to games like poker where it's basically just 100%, wall to wall, reading faces. What's really different is there's a bluffing element to Star Wars: the card game...the thing that made a difference for me was context. Because with poker, there's no context for why someone would or would not be bluffing, because you don't know what cards they have. Whereas with Star Wars, you knew which unit they were using", says Bijhan Agha. Bijhan returns to Autism Stories to discuss creating a strategy board game, successfully funding their comic book, and how self publishing may be a viable route for other autistic creators. Autism Stories: Ash
"There still is a lot of stigma towards medium support needs and high support needs autistics. There's a lot of stigma about not being able to act neurotypical. I think there needs to be more talk about why that is. Why exactly do we feel the need to act neurotypical so much? I also want people to include all of the excluded types into the conversation- that needs to happen more", says Ash. Ash joins this episode to discuss autistics that have medium and high support needs, his love of sharks, and their intersectional identities. Autism Stories: Robin Gow
"It's hard to contend what it means to be a living creature in an area where it doesn't necessarily belong. I think I felt a lot of connection to the Lantern Fly because they're very beautiful and strange, and people don't understand them. I think that I felt a connection to being an LGBT person and then also being an autistic person, where I often feel like misunderstood and out of place", says Robin Gow. Robin joins this episode to discuss their new book of poetry Lanternfly August, managing programs at their local LGBT community center, and being a witch. Autism Stories: Alice Hack
"When the speech therapy didn't help, my family have always been an avid lover of books. We just have piles of them in shelves everywhere. It was obvious that I would feel more drawn to that, rather than speaking to somebody in person and face-to-face", says Alice Hack.Alice joins this episode to discuss her career working in a library, important LGBTQ+ of the past, and learning that she has a famous relative.
