On Todays Show:

Shannon Urquiola, Not Your Average Autism Mom
I am mom to two amazing young adults. My son Jordan is 25 and was diagnosed with autism
when he was 5-years old. He also has a younger sister Madison who is 23. My journey to
today really began on the day I got Jordan’s diagnosis.
I remember that day like it was yesterday. Being so confused, not being able to stop the tears,
asking WHY ME? Those feelings of being alone when no one in my family had a child with
autism, all my friends who had their children before me, none of them had a child with autism?
When you have a child with autism you find yourself feeling isolated and alone.
I spent 10 years building an Educational Advocacy company and working with special needs
families and advocates across the US when Jordan was in middle and high school. During
those years, the realization that Jordan would be living with me forever became noticeably clear.
That was my reality, so I knew I had to figure out how I was going to embark on that journey
showing up every day as the best version of myself. It was at that time I began working with a
Life Coach, and through that coaching and training, I began to really understand how I needed
to think differently to feel differently and it was truly a turning point in my life.
I went on to become a certified Life Coach and today, inside of our private membership, not only
do we have an array of autism training and resources that they need along this unique parenting
journey, but we include an entire coaching program as well. I am coaching our moms on
becoming more confident and courageous throughout their parenting journey.
I am extremely passionate about the world of autism and more specifically the challenges that
moms raising a child with autism have along the way. We are a place for them to learn and
grow forming friendships along the way with other moms traveling the same journey. It is truly
an amazing place to be.

Interview with David Boyer, Resort Manager at Bluegreen Vacations

My name is David Boyer. I have worked in the hospitality industry for over 25 years. I have always been obsessed with providing great customer service and creating incredible vacation memories. Once Brady came into our lives, we looked at things differently. A lot of the things we did as a family was taken for granted. Just going to the store, yet alone on vacation was more of a challenge. It was more difficult to do things as a family. Once we moved to Myrtle Beach we heard about the many activities that were offered for kids with Autism. Brady had a chance to go see things and do activities that he had never done before. I also learned about the training the Champion Autism Network, also known as CAN, does for resorts and hotels to offer the chance for other families to visit Myrtle Beach. This was the same time I was trying to educate my own company on how we can better serve families and children in the autism community. I believe it is so important for the family bonding and togetherness. CAN provides that opportunity by working with businesses and resorts. There is so much that can be done in our area and we have the opportunity to assist other communities to help them learn and develop their own programs with businesses. CAN can truly make a big difference in so many lives.

MAKING A ROYAL DIFFERENCE
The inspiration for the Royal Ball Run for Autism organization stems from the now 1 in 59 children who are diagnosed with autism each year. We will be running to celebrate their achievements, their courage, and their future!

Our goal is to increase awareness of autism and to support (and celebrate!) families and children touched by autism. Proceeds from the Royal Ball Run for Autism support local programs dedicated to autism treatment and awareness.

In our first nine years, the Royal Ball Run for Autism has invested more than $230,000 in local autism programs thanks to the tremendous support of our participants, partners and sponsors. In addition to local autism programs, Royal Ball Run for Autism has developed a Quad City area autism resource guide, The Royal Guide. Click here to view http://theroyalguide.org/

Episode #75 Interview with Dr. Jessica Bradshaw at USC -Early Social Development and Intervention Lab

Episode #75 Interview with Dr. Jessica Bradshaw at USC -Early Social Development and Intervention Lab

Featured This Episode

The Early Social Development & Intervention Lab is dedicated to better understanding infant development and improving the future for kids with autism! Our research study follows babies through their first 2 years of life and monitors their social, motor, and language skills as they grow. Parents receive periodic feedback on their baby's development and can earn up to $300 for participating. If you are
currently pregnant or have an infant 6 months old or younger, you are eligible for our study. Learn More and Sign Up Here https://www.esdilab.com/

Dr. Bradshaw received her PhD in Clinical, Counseling, and School Psychology from the University of California, Santa Barbara after which time she completed her postdoctoral work at the Marcus Autism Center, Emory University School of Medicine. She has been involved in autism research since her undergraduate work in Cognitive Science at the University of California, San Diego and her post-baccalaureate work at the Yale Child Study Center.

Research
My research focuses on early identification and intervention of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in the first years of life. Specifically, I am interested in: 1) quantifying the emergence of, and interrelations between, social behavior, visual attention, and motor skills in neonates, infants, and toddlers, 2) identifying aberrant neurodevelopmental pathways that lead to the emergence of autism spectrum disorder (ASD), and 3) translating these basic findings to early detection and intervention strategies for ASD.

Early Identification

I use behavioral, eye tracking, and physiological methods to map early neurobehavioral development and identify pivotal transitions that occur between birth and 12 months of age, with a particular interest in birth through 5 months. In the context of longitudinal research designs with infants at risk for ASD, I aim to understand how disruption during these early developmental periods may have cascading consequences on the development of social communication.

Early Intervention

A second line of my research focuses on naturalistic developmental behavioral interventions (NDBIs) for infants and toddlers with or at risk for ASD. I am interested in using eye tracking to identify both parent and child predictors of treatment response and using these predictors to better individualize treatment. I am also interested in exploring how we can use NDBI methods to enhance social attention and support motor development in the first months of life and how these efforts may facilitate the emergence of social communication for infants at risk for ASD.

Episode #73 Advocate Like A Mother with Alison Hamilton

Episode #73 Advocate Like A Mother with Alison Hamilton

Featured This Episode:

Alison Hamilton is a social worker, recovering journalist, and an imperfect parent of three daughters, a singleton with autism and neurotypical twins. She has been a frequent flyer at support groups since her daughter’s diagnosis, first as an attendee, and then as a coordinator. She helps other parents strengthen their advocacy skills in her Facebook group, Advocate Like a Mother.

Alison holds a B.A. in American Studies from the University of Notre Dame. She worked at newspapers in Texas and Florida before leaving journalism for social work. She earned an MSW from Barry University in Miami Shores, Florida, and got early experience providing individual and group therapy at an outpatient addiction facility and a social service agency before moving to Maryland.

Within a year, she had newborn twins and an autism diagnosis for her oldest daughter. She describes the next several years as a bonus internship. By the time the twins started kindergarten, she had acquired plenty of real-world experience in advocacy, juggling professionals, understanding medical and educational jargon, and behavior management. She also managed to squeeze in some work as a school social worker, primarily in inner-city schools in Washington, DC, and now operates a solo private practice in Maryland.

About CGCC

Computer Game Coding Camp for Autism is a two-week camp for high school students and rising seniors on the autism spectrum (ASD) that exposes them to high-level video game development and networking with peers. Throughout the two-week camp, campers learn the high-level processes of software development, game development, interpersonal communication, collaboration, and end up with their own game, from scratch.

We are excited to host this camp for the second year in a row. This year, our two-week coding camp will be provided in two formats, virtual through Zoom and in-person (on the Clemson University campus). Campers may participate fully online, fully in-person, or choose one week to be online and the other week to be in-person. It is recommended that campers register for both weeks.

In addition to learning to code, campers who reside on campus will participate in activities and instruction designed to further develop their executive functioning, problem-solving, and self-advocacy skills, which are necessary for college success.

2021 Camp Dates

Week 1: Monday, June 14 through Friday, June 18, 2021
Week 2: Monday, June 21 through Friday, June 25, 2021

The Zoom virtual sessions will run from 12:30 - 3:30pm EDT Monday through Friday. The in-person campers will have morning instruction related to college readiness and coding sessions from 12:30 - 3:30pm EDT Monday through Friday.

About Becky Large:
From Riverton NJ, Becky and her family arrived in Surfside Beach SC in April 2012. Having a son with HFA, after relocating it was apparent there were organizations that supported the child with autism, but no real support for the families. CAN was born from that realization. A social entrepreneur and servant leader, Becky, along with the Champion Autism Network and Lead With Love Training Co. teams, is driven to spread autism awareness, provide families dealing with autism a “traditional” family experience modified for those with autism and provide economic impact to the communities it serves. Becky is married to Michael Large, an Elder and Special Needs Law attorney and has two sons, 15 and 17.

About CAN:
Join Becky Large, creator and Executive Director of Champion Autism Network (CAN), an organization committed to creating traditional family experiences modified for those with autism. Featured in the Associated Press, Travel & Leisure, NBC Nightly News, and a BBC Documentary, Becky and CAN are helping to create inclusive environments, providing joy and support in what started in Surfside Beach SC and now around the country. Learn how an idea to curate sensory-friendly events led to a movement that provides fun for families with autism, a robust PR autism awareness campaign strategy, the creation of a certification program for hotels, restaurants, and venues, and economic impact to the
communities and businesses involved--simply by leading with love.

Episode #54 Interview with Singer & Songwriter David Punch "Helping others not feel alone thru inspirational music"

Episode #54 Interview with Singer & Songwriter David Punch "Helping others not feel alone thru inspirational music"

Please visit autisminactionpodcast.com for more information

David Punch is using his voice to spread one simple but strong and moving message,“We’re Not Different, We’re the same, We’re all under the stars”. With his latest song release, Different, David Punch wants us all to realize just that. Even though there are things that make every individual unique, we still all share the same core. His goal is pretty clear as well, to make it his mission so that no one ever feels alone in spite of our differences. We all hurt, we all cry. A talented multi-instrumental singer and songwriter, David Punch is adding motivational speaker to his list. Being a person whose “difference” is having Asperger's Syndrome (a neuro developmental disorder characterised by significant difficulties in social interaction and nonverbal communication) his life experiences with challenging issues such as bullying, and working on his mental health makes him the best person to offer hope and encouragement.

*Thank you to producer Dave Skelton and artists such as Gavin James, Kodaline and James Bay who inspired and believed in the making of Different.
