Auto-Biography

By Auto-Biography

Auto-Biography is a collection of stories from all kinds of people about a car, truck, bike or whatever that was special to them. Even if you're not a gear-head, you likely have a tale about a machine. I want to hear about the vehicle that moved you.

E019 Pharoahs Car Club's Rick Stewart and Rod Newlove

E019 Pharoahs Car Club's Rick Stewart and Rod Newlove

From the Pharoahs Car Club, two men who've distinguished themselves as builders and story tellers...

Rick Stewart talks of passing on the passion for vehicles to his daughter, and finding all kinds of long forgotten, and valuable, vehicles in barns.

Rod Newlove just thought it was no big deal to turn a Beetle into an electric vehicle. So that's what he did. An interesting chat with a man who proves that almost anything is possible.

Listen, like, rate, leave a comment and subscribe. It's all appreciated. And for sure get in touch with me if you have a story to share.

E018 The Trews / Jimmy Diresta / Museum of Failure

E018 The Trews / Jimmy Diresta / Museum of Failure

It's a triple header, with John Angus MacDonald from The Trews talking about the early days of the band, setting out on the road, and what it's like these days travelling as a musician in a post pandemic kind of world.

Jimmy Diresta is the MAN! Currently seen on NETFLIX' Making Fun, Jimmy is an inventor, fabricator, businessman and raconteur, and we had a heck of a time talking about his days in the toy business, making a television show, and working with Nick Offerman.

Our first doctor, and our first Swede, Dr. Samuel West is the curator of the globe spanning Museum of Failure...a celebration of losing, which of course, if you keep trying, leads to winning. A charming fellow, we have a good time making fun of famous automotive failures, the Delorean, and the Edsel.

E017 - The Sheepdogs / Lou Costabile

E017 - The Sheepdogs / Lou Costabile

We're back for number 17!

Jimmy Bowskill and Ryan Gullen from Saskatoon Rock & Rollers, The Sheepdogs, gave me a ring to talk about touring from coast to coast all the while dealing with the van breaking down, being broken into, and being stolen. Some insight on what it's really like for a touring band climbing their way to the toppermost of the poppermost.

The new album, OUTTA SIGHT is out June 3. Buy it! https://sheepdogs.lnk.to/OuttaSight

Lou Costible from My Car Story With Lou loves cars, and loves bringing the story of those cars, and their owners to the world. We talked of our mutual love for the '66 Batmobile, and how he grew from an enthusiast, to a chronicler of the classics.

E016 - Randy Bachman / Darren Wiberg - 1918 Winton

E016 - Randy Bachman / Darren Wiberg - 1918 Winton

Two of my favorite story tellers together in a big ol' super golden goodie of an episode!

In advance of his stop at Bo's on May 8, Randy Bachman called to chat about the vehicles that moved him, like a Rolls Royce Silver Dawn that came from Saskatoon, and a Thunderbird he bought from Burton Cummings, in the trunk of which they stored some newly recorded music which was almost lost to time. Find out what happened to the tapes, what keeps Randy running circles around most other people, and some memories about what touring as a musician was like way back in the day. I appreciated his openness, and this ended up being a chat unlike I've had before on Auto-Biography.

We also head back to Reynolds Alberta Museum to talk with Darren Wiberg about the most expensive and extensive restoration ever, the 1918 Winton Six. After travelling from Cleveland, to Hodgeville Saskatchewan, back to Cleveland, then back to Sask, then unto Calgary, the King of Cars, as it was marketed, was the subject of years of painstaking work, to get it to the state of breathtaking originality. Historian and technician Darren Wiberg takes us through the car's past, and why it's important to the history of Western Canada.

E015 - Jason Harris at Reynolds Alberta Museum & the Bricklin SV-1 / Boy Golden and the 1995 Toyota Previa

E015 - Jason Harris at Reynolds Alberta Museum & the Bricklin SV-1 / Boy Golden and the 1995 Toyota Previa

Well, the 1970s were a crazy time, and a swinging fellow by the name of Malcolm Bricklin decided he should build a sports car. Made of plastic. With gull wings. Built in New Brunswick. And it should come with a gold jumpsuit. Like Icarus, he tried to touch the sky, but when he flew to close to the sun, the body panels on the Bricklin SV-1 melted. Jason Harris from Reynolds Alberta museum tells us why the Bricklin started him in an automotive career, and why we sadly never saw this Canadian sports car achieve the legendary status dreamt of.

www.reynoldsmuseum.ca

Boy Golden wears the best mustache to come out of Winnipeg since Burton Cummings. In reality, he's maybe the best songwriter to come out of Winnipeg since Burton, too. Every hero has his steed, and Boy Golden talks about his 1995 Toyota Previa, and why he thinks his van is the coolest of all the vans. He's a real E-VAN-Gelist. Get it? Boy Golden's album Church of Better Daze will put a smile on your face and a tap in your toe. Lovely tunes for a happy cruise in the vehicle that moved you.  www.boygolden.ca https://sixshooterrecords.com/artists/boy-golden/

E014 - Juanita Voth at the Reynolds Alberta Museum / Dan Davidson

E014 - Juanita Voth at the Reynolds Alberta Museum / Dan Davidson

More stories about vehicles, and people that have loved them!

Yes, the first one is the story of a Hupp Yeats Electric Coach, but it's so much more than I even expected. Throw in an eccentric heiress, a foul mouthed parrot with a brandy habit, a treasure hunt, legal wrangling, and tearing down walls to get to a car, and you've got a bit of the take Juanita Voth from the Reynolds Alberta Museum has in store.

www.reynoldsmuseum.ca

With 6 CCMA nominations, 10 ACMA awards, a gold record and a number 1 selling song, Dan Davidson still took the time to share some love for his Ford Ranger, the little truck that took him to countless gigs, and reminisces about truck stop rumbles (he was a spectator) and desert Cadillacs.

Dan's latest, Six Songs To Midnight, is available Feb 25. Check out www.dandavidsonmusic.com

And we'd love to hear your story, too! Go to https://linktr.ee/autobiographypodcast for the fast track to all of the socials.

E13 - Reynolds Alberta Museum with Darren Wiberg / Eric "EnviroDad" Novak

A look into the past and a look into the next phase of our vehicular journey.

We travelled out to the Reynolds Alberta Museum for a chat with their head of Restoration Services, Darren Wiberg. They've been working on a mysterious vehicle called the Canada Diesel, and with him, we dive into why this truck is so important to Canadian and Albertan history.

In the coming year, we'll be spending a lot of time out there, and so should you!

www.reynoldsmuseum.ca

Next we chat with Eric Novak, the man who knows more about EVs than anyone ever! He's got lots to say about how they'll be making their way into our lives.

E012 - Jason McCoy / Tucker McMurray

E012 - Jason McCoy / Tucker McMurray

All Alberta, all big-blocks on this episode. Canadian County Music best-seller Jason McCoy tells the tale of his Dad's F150, which became his F150, and how this Backroad Bentley (I just made up a phrase) became a part of his life for years. Singer and Guitarist for King Bull, Tucker McMurray started driving his Grandpa's Chrysler 300 at the age of 8, and that's the way it should be. Life lessons and vehicle maintenance tips from two of my favorite musicians!

E011 Devin Cooper / Cole Malone / Jesse Roads

E011 Devin Cooper / Cole Malone / Jesse Roads

This is the first ever Auto-Biography with three guests, and it’s a treat to bring a trio of Albertan musicians who’ve put on countless miles with touring from the West coast to the Best coast.

Devin Cooper bought his first car roughly around the same age when most of us were getting their training wheels taken off, and he’s been smoking his tires ever since. Devin tells us stories about growing up building cars…and a chance encounter with Heisenberg.

Cole Malone’s got a cautionary tale about road food for a rowdy rhythm section and shares some more tips for a smooth tour when you’re far from home.

Jesse Roads had a road-to Damascus moment involving a ‘borrowed’ Mustang that kept him playing in bars, rather than living behind them, and he generously shares some tales of a misspent youth, and some adventures on the road.

Recorded as always at Communal Creative Studios, and put together by my George Martin, Mister Ryan Kuly.

E010 Gordie Johnson / Scott Fea

E010 Gordie Johnson / Scott Fea

Two of the best story-tellers you'll ever hear.

Big Sugar's Gordie Johnson seems to be well versed in everything cool, including cars, guitars and BBQ. He shares some memories about vehicles he's owned, including THE Charger...that one, from the cover of Hemi-Vision.

Calgary's Scott Fea attracts adventure and good times, and he's telling us on this one how his Plymouth Valiants brought him some of both.

As always, Auto-Biography was recorded at Communal Creative Studios.

And the Road Hammers' Clayton Bellamy looks back on a wreck turned into a family project, and gives us a peek at life on the tour-bus. Recorded, as always, at Communal Creative Studios in Red Deer!

See www.thestampederes.com for tour dates. Also joined by Cord Higbee, who told me about a vehicle I'd never even heard of...the 1934 Diamond T.
