The STEM Village - Matthew Sinton

Hey friends,

welcome back to Away from the Bench where we're exploring the changing landscape of research and academia, through the experiences and lives of scientists and their allies.

As always you can get in touch with the show on twitter @AFTB_Podcast, let me know what you think.

In this episode I wanted to talk to Matthew Sinton about launching the STEM Village, an initiative that aims to build a community for LGBTQ+ scientists in Scotland.

I also felt this was a great opportunity to hear his story about the scenic route he took to reach the startline of his PhD. An experience I can sympathise with and I think will resonate with you too.

I hope you enjoy it.

Hey friend, welcome to Away from the Bench where we explore how on earth researchers are attempt to remain productive in unproductive circumstances, maintain their positivity and look after themselves and their families during uncertain times.

Today I've got a conversation I had with Rachel Strickman , a Research Associate at the University of Washington in Seattle recorded on the 26th of March.

@RachelStrickman

We talk about trying to keep her experiments going as a key worker, embracing and benefiting from the plethora of remote meetings now available and likening working from home with kids to all the battles in Lord of the Rings rolled into one.

Any comments or questions about the podcast can be aimed at: @AFTB_Podcast

I hope you enjoy it.

Welcome to Away from the Bench, a podcast where we're going to explore how on earth researchers are attempting to remain productive in unproductive circumstances.

Due to the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic many researchers have abandoned their offices and labs and decamped to their own homes to continue working. But how are they trying to simply get stuff done when they can no longer conduct lab based experiments, physically interact with their teams on a daily basis, and have kids and pets climbing over them for attention. How have their daily working lives changed.

I'm David, a PhD student at Edinburgh University in Scotland and I want to find out how everyone else is trying to maintain their productivity, positivity and look after themselves and their families during these uncertain times.

Join me as I chat to researchers at all stages in their careers to ask them "What's your new normal like?"
