Emotional Intelligence in Tech: How EQ Became the New IQ with Andrea Stone

Emotional Intelligence in Tech: How EQ Became the New IQ with Andrea Stone

In order to thrive in today's rapidly evolving tech landscape, fluency in three languages is crucial: the language of code, the language of clients, and the language of colleagues. In this era dominated by discussions on Artificial Intelligence, we may possess top-tier talent, utilize cutting-edge tools, and foster an exceptional work environment. However, there is still an elusive element that brings everything together—a special kind of magic. This begs the question: What exactly is this magic sought after in the tech world? Is it high IQ, advanced AI, or perhaps emotional intelligence (EQ)?

Andrea Stone, the visionary Founder and Leadership Coach at Stone Leadership, and a trusted Preferred Partner for Six Seconds, recently made an insightful visit to Ei cafe. During her visit, she graciously shared her wealth of experiences and profound insights on the topic of "Emotional Intelligence in Tech: How EQ Emerged as the New IQ."

When individuals seek assistance in areas like website development, app creation, or online marketing, their evaluation process often revolves solely around technical expertise. While skills like coding, graphic design, and search engine optimization are undoubtedly important, they rarely serve as the sole predictors of project success. As Andrea emphasized, tech leaders can enhance their effectiveness by crafting an inspiring vision and bridging the gap between purpose and deliverables. Additionally, engaging in meaningful conversations plays a pivotal role in achieving desired outcomes.

Are conflicts really unproductive in the workplace

Are conflicts really unproductive in the workplace

Workplace conflict is inevitable when employees of various backgrounds and different work styles are brought together for a shared business purpose. Conflict can—and should—be managed and resolved. With tensions and anxieties at an all-time high due to the current political divide and racial inequity discussions at work, the chances for workplace conflict have increased.  So the question is Are conflicts really unproductive in the workplace?

Liane Davey- Co Founder-3COze Inc, Author ,Speaker & HBR contributor checked in to the cafe to have a conversation around workplace conflict & whether they are unproductive?

Many experts maintain that although conflict is generally regarded as having a negative effect in the workplace, a degree of properly managed conflict can be beneficial for an organization. Eliminating tension in the workplace isn’t feasible—and isn’t healthy for your organization in the long run. A better approach is to redirect the attention wasted on petty fighting toward a positive pursuit, experts say. conflict is always emotional, “so it’s paramount that HR professionals are able to create a safe place for people to talk about and pursue their emotional motives” and develop strategies for healthy resolution.

Liane did share two elements in terms of Workplace conflict, which is Tension which is healthy conflict which can be a proactive to identify certain problem, it can be uncomfortable at the same time friction can create a negative impact. This is where conflict appears as lack of Emotional Intelligence, lack of listening not able to understand the situation. Empathy, Curiosity, interest & openness  are some key  behaviors help to develop productive tension.

Innovation Culture, is it an investment? with Mohamed AlTajer

Innovation Culture, is it an investment? with Mohamed AlTajer

65m years ago an asteroid the size of a small mountain struck the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico and everything changed. Interestingly, it wasn’t the impact that killed off the majority of the dinosaurs but the rapid change in global environment that followed. These huge beasts who ruled the earth for 180m years, unsurprisingly could not adapt fast enough.

Our world has changed too, but our meteor strike has been technology. The unprecedented rate of change we now see leaves many breathless; and this is just the beginning. Quantum computers will soon be an everyday reality and many previously intractable problems will be rapidly solved by the sheer might of quantum computing power. So do we invest on Innovation led culture in organization to Adopt to rapid change or Do we get extinct like dinosaurs ?

Moahmed AlTajer: Partner at Tough love , a speaker & an Innovator checked in to the Cafe from UAE and shared some amazing insights & experience on Investing on Innovation led culture.

Innovation is easier said than done. It often requires you to collaborate with others, overcome resistance from stakeholders, and invest valuable time and resources into generating solutions. It can also be highly discouraging because many ideas generated during ideation may not go anywhere. But the end result can make the difference between your organization's success or failure.

Having a culture of innovation is vital for any organization that is looking to innovate and achieve or maintain a leading position in their own field. Sure, an innovation culture always has room for creativity, empathy, and freedom, but those attributes also need to be balanced with some of the tougher, and frankly not so fun, ones like discipline and individual accountability.Having said that, creating an innovation culture isn’t impossible, it just takes a lot of dedication, persistence and hard work.

Can Music be an emotional regulator

Can Music be an emotional regulator

Music listening is an integral and oftentimes purposeful activity in our daily lives. We listen to particular tracks in order to change our current emotional state or in order to maintain it. How we react to a particular song not only depends on the musical attributes of that song but on various situational and personal factors. Well renowned Sri Lankan Music Artist & Entrepreneur Bathiya Jayakody (know as BNS) checked in to the cafe to share his insights & experience on How Music is a vital component & how it can be a regulator of our emotions.   Music has a strong connection to feelings of pleasure. Engaging with music can trigger the same biological and psychological responses associated with other highly fundamental rewards, such as food, sex, and money. Our internal rhythms speed up or slow down to become one with the music. The movement is more likely to occur when one is listening to a highly enjoyable song. in the same way that we grasp other people’s emotions, we also feel the emotions from music, because they’re contagious Sad music tends to make people sad; happy music cheers them. That is, listeners tend to adopt bodily postures and attitudes like those expressed in the music.  Bathiya did mention sound & music play a vital role. They always make sure the environment & context is set when composing a song. At the same time, they have learned to not to respond to their fans rather listened to them & work on the draw back. further He did share how Coaching young talent & collaborating with them makes so important for the industry. There are many valuable lessons from a corporate perspective in this episode. To listen to full episode check in to the cafe by pressing that play button. Visual Thinking, Can it make a difference in Strategy development with Tim Hamons

Visual Thinking, Can it make a difference in Strategy development with Tim Hamons

Thinking with pictures sounds a bit silly, reminds us of kindergarten flash cards as we memorised our letters. And yet, it remains a crucial instrument of complex thought, even a simple diagram can tell you much more than a naked explanation. The very moment of becoming mentally aware is beautifully expressed with a heartfelt, “Ah, I see.”

BUT WHAT IF I ASKED HAVE YOU HEARD ABOUT VISUAL LISTENING ? HOW IT CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE ?

Tim Hamons : FOUNDER: ART OF AWAKENING , CREATIVITY & VISUAL THINKING CONSULTANT checked in to cafe to share his knowledge & experineces on Visual Listening & why it is Important.

Visual listening is showing people how you are listening to them by drawing what you’re hearing as you listen. Visual listening is a “pull” strategy. It is similar to judo or aikido. As people are coming at you with their ideas, you are in a receptive mode, showing them that you are receiving them by diagramming what they are saying.

Basically, it is about you tracking what you’re paying attention to, with the other person being able to see right away what you are getting from what is being said, as well as what you aren’t noting that may be important to include. If it is a key oversight, the person you are listening to will automatically repeat it to make sure you hear it.

Visual listening can be a game changer for an organization to communicate their strategies to their employees. A visual interpretation can be more effective rather a word document or Power point presentation. We often see organization have their vision as a statement but we never see as a visual which can make a great impact. Organisational Leaders can bring lot of cohesiveness through Visual Listening

Tim did state that it is a skill which can be developed. Listening is an important element in Visual Listening & it is not doodling. You need to capture the ideas & sketch note it. Be more present when your are developing visual elements. Tim’s one of tip was be your self, just try it out one of your meeting notes as a doodle or sketch. Visual Thinking can be used in various professions like, coaching.

Raising Awareness of Unconscious bias & its impact on workplace with Prachi Thakur

Raising Awareness of Unconscious bias & its impact on workplace with Prachi Thakur

The effects of unconscious or unintentional bias resonate throughout the entire structure of an organisation. From the people you hire, to the processes in place, unconscious bias affects everything and everyone and most of the time it is usually unrecognised.

Unconscious bias occurs when people favour others who look like them and/or share their values. For example, a person may be drawn to someone with a similar educational background, from the same area, or who is the same colour or ethnicity as them.

It is important for leaders and managers to be aware of their own biases because of the negative, and often drastic, impact that it can have on both strategies and processes.

Prachi Thakur who is a TEDx speaker and diversity trainer who co-wrote the regional report on Gender in Tourism in Asia and the Pacific for United Nations World Tourism Organization checked in to the cafe to share her insights & experiences on "Raising Awareness of Unconscious bias & its impact on workplace"

Prachi Thakur did mention that Biases occurs conscious as well as in unconsciousness state. This has bigger impact i the workplace culture. It is utmost priority for any organisation to bring awareness & provide training with thinking the bigger picture. She did mention some easy steps to develop such a working culture.

Unconscious bias throws a wrench into any plans to make diversity work. That means it’s the greatest enemy of belonging and psychological safety. Which means it’s the greatest enemy of innovation. When you know your unconscious biases, you’ll have way better control of all your business decisions. You’ll think twice about hiring the person who sees the world like you do and think more about the person who’ll shake things up. You’ll start listening to the colleagues you’d written off. You’ll find inspiration. You’ll find creativity.

And what does that all do for your business? It makes more engaged employees. It makes stronger teams. It makes for a competitive advantage

Leadership in times of Crisis with Monica Zionede Hall

Leadership in times of Crisis with Monica Zionede Hall

When leading through a crisis, most leaders are forced to think and behave in ways that feel unfamiliar. Whether it’s a technological, financial, natural, or health crisis — at work or in the community — crises demand that leaders take an emergency response plan and adapt it as new evidence and factors present themselves. All the while, effective leaders are able to remain calm and maintain a sense of perspective. According to Gene Klann, author of the  book Crisis Leadership, “During a crisis, your goal is to reduce loss and keep things operating as normal as possible.”

Monica Zionede Hall- Founder & CEO FELIZ Consulting checked in to the cafe & shared some amazing Insights on Leadership in times of Crisis. During a crisis, leaders are often focused on the emotional turmoil of their direct reports and others in the organisation, but it’s equally important for leaders to take care of themselves. Whatever leadership role you play, you need to be aware of your own emotional turmoil, its effect on your behavior, and its influence on your leadership abilities.Monica did Share that Emotional Intelligence is must have skill for a leader, especially in the time of a crisis. Raising an Emotionally Intelligent Child with Lata Singh

Raising an Emotionally Intelligent Child with Lata Singh

Most advice on parenting focuses on how to deal with misbehaviour. While helpful, this is also akin to only offering advice on how to survive after a nuclear holocaust and not talking about how to prevent one

What usually underlies bad behavior is how the child handles negative emotions. And this is something we rarely teach deliberately and almost never teach well. Showing kids how to recognise and deal with feelings prevents misbehaviour — and it’s a skill that will serve them their entire lives. It prevents tantrums at age 4 but it’s also the difference between saving college money and saving bail money later on. Look at it as potty training for feelings.

But how do we do that?

Lata Singh - Founder-director of Meraviglia EQ Academy- India Check in to the cafe & shared some important insights & experiences on the topic on "Raising an Emotionally Intelligent Child"

The secret to raising kids who understand others' feelings and empathise with them,  is to give your children the space to understand and express their own emotions. If you provide a willing ear to hear about your children's frustration or fear, they will learn to cope with emotional pain by expressing it to a loved one, therapist, or even just a journal. And maybe even more important, they'll come to understand that the way to react to other people's negative experiences. is to understand and work through them.

One of key message from Lata is that as parent we need to respond rather react to our child. As a parent develop self-awareness  & self-regulation to understand your Childs emotions. Help them to label their emotions by showing up your emotions & explain why you’re going through it. This is the ripple effect

Creating trusting work culture with Natalie Brown

Creating trusting work culture with Natalie Brown

Trust is at the foundation of healthy relationships. At its core, trust is the willingness of one party to be vulnerable to the actions of another. It is an expectation that two parties will act in a way that is mutually beneficial. For these reasons, trust is a key element of effective communication, teamwork, employee commitment and productivity. It leads to stronger working relationships and a healthier organisational culture. So the question is How can we create a trusting work culture in an organisational environment?

Natalie Brown-  Managing Director at Select training & management consultancy checked in to the cafe & shared some amazing insights & experiences on developing trusting work culture.

According to the Edelman "Trust Barometer" (a survey of 33,000 people in 28 countries), one in three people don’t trust their employer. In the same Edelman research, it was also discovered that trust decreases from top positions to the lowest. For instance, 64% of executives trust their organisations, while only 51% of managers and 48% of other staff trust their organisations. In other words, employees trust their peers more than the CEOs and upper-level executives. The higher up you go, the more critical it is for you to build trust with those that you supervise.

Natalie Shared that creating that Sense of Belonging, which is utmost thing any leader need to look out for. Create engaging conversations, having celebrations together, taking initiative on clear communication can lead to a trusting work culture.
