***This audio is directly from it's associated YouTube video, so there are some very brief audio gaps.
Jim Edwards works at the Edgewood Treatment Center here in Nanaimo, where they treat a variety of behavioural and psychological disorders. Chances are, you or someone you know has experienced substance abuse.
We usually think of behaviour as the problem, when really it's just a symptom. Substance abuse so often serves as a source of comfort or good feelings, or an escape, or both.
There are many behaviours we do that are compensations for our relationships, or life and work stress. It could manifest as substance abuse, binge eating disorder, anorexia, aggression, avoidance, dependence, etc. Some of these behaviours are less destructive, others more.
Speaking for myself, all of the above emotions and behaviours have played a role in my personal experiences, and emotional and spiritual growth.
On a fundamental level, we yearn to accept ourselves amidst the many societal expectations and perceived norms. I think that if we can take information, like that from Jim's presentation, to reflect on our own experiences, emotions, and behaviours, then we can really begin to understand ourselves better, as well as begin to feel empathy for those who represent the extreme end of the dependency continuum.
Why Master of Sport Corissa Sivorot video documents her progress, running a kettlebell competition during pandemic
In this episode I am joined by Master of Sport ranked Corissa Sivorot.
We chat about some of the trials and tribulations of both running a gym and kettlebell competitions during the pandemic, as well as what has changed between now and when the pandemic started.
It's not all pandemic talk though. I ask Corissa why she is so consistent with her video "diaries" of her kettlebell sport training: why does she do it, what does she get out of it, what are her interactions with others on social media like, and when does being plugged into the social media space become too much?
We get deep, but also share some laughs. With any luck, you'll be better acquainted with Corissa Sivorot, who she is, and what makes her tick.

I am also hosting a post comp BBQ at my residence in Nanaimo - tickets for that are $20. Our April In-House was a blast!
We were so happy to see new people take to the platform, and grateful for our friends from Victoria for making the trip to Nanaimo.
We had a total of 14 lifters who participated, and Rachel jumped in twice to fill out half empty flights, finishing the day with 5 sets of kettlebell!
Most lifters made rank numbers for at least one event, and following everyone's individual sets was a 4 Team Longcycle Relay. We had two mens and 2 womens teams, comprised of 3 members each, lifting 3 minutes each.
Overall Longcycle Relay Team Award went to Rod MacMillan, Matt O'Brien, and Jeff Bremer (Score: 113). And the Top Women's Team Award went to Netta Buczek, Pat Marshall, and Rachel Robertson (Score: 122).

BALLISTIC STRENGTH RADIO_EP. 26: PROGRESSIONS | KETTLEBELL SPORT
In this episode Charlie and I breakdown how we look at developing the traditional lifts outside of just performing the lifts themselves.
Can you improve your snatch by just performing the snatch? The short answer is yes. But can you maximize your potential? Not likely.
3:07 - Can you improve the snatch by just performing snatches?
4:07 - Putting in quality reps
5:10 - Knowing what good technique is, training without a coach, identify your own mistakes
8:59 - Fix your swing, fix your snatch, never bang your wrist again
11:30 - Compensatory, dysfunctional biomechanics
12:44 - Using wrist guards to get past growing pains
14:23 - The kettlebell rack "crunch", fundamental principle or style nuance?
20:32 - Know when to keep or drop a technique or drill
23:00 - Is there stylized breathing for kettlebell sport, and when do you teach that?
25:15 - The importance of breath
26:40 - The prevalence of flawed breathing
27:15 - Breath and balance are connected
29:45 - High pull progression for snatch development
31:40 - Choose the heavy bell: using natural feedback when teaching
33:40 - Snatching will improve your snatch before increasing arm strength, grip strength or endurance
35:35 - A swing is not a swing; narrow the focus of why and how you swing to improve your snatch; Rudnev insertion progression
37:09 - Re-engineering your snatch style; specificity of your drills; the Denisov rocking swing
41:35 - How I added 40 reps to my 24kg snatch
42:30 - Technique vs. Grip Strength for improving snatch numbers (see study below)
43:02 - Big technical changes vs. little nuanced fine tuning for increasing numbers; small changes can have the biggest impact

In this episode we examine the Health At Every Size (HAES) philosophy and offer a variety of perspectives on it. Our roundtable consists of:
Solomon Macys - lifestyle & strength coach, former BMI of 34.7 (Obese, stage II) at 12 years old, current BMI of 25.5 (Overweight)
Rachel Robertson - kinesiologist, personal trainer, former BMI of 34.8 (Obese, stage II) in 2009, current BMI 25.2 (Overweight)
Ahron Francis Balatti - 20 years old, olympic weightlifter, history of extreme dieting with generally negative outcomes, former BMI of 34.8 (Obese, stage II) in 2015, current BMI of 28.6 (Overweight)
Quinlan Jager - competitive olympic weightlifter, considers himself slightly bigorexic, holds a BA in Media Studies from Vancouver Island University
My main questions regarding the HAES philosophy include:
1. How is what HAES preaches any different from what lifestyle coaches already do. Did HAES just put a label on it? If so, has the label become a pejorative for principles or positive self-talk that most coaches and athletes already practice?
2. Does HAES incorrectly attribute self-efficacy and self-esteem to how large or small a person is? Are these not separate issues? If HAES is more interested in helping people become comfortable with who they are on a psychological level, why is the campaign so focused on "SIZE", much as the name suggests?

With the Rio Olympic Games in full swing, we’ve seen some amazing athletic performances. Still, I can’t ignore the dark cloud hovering over the games that seemed to grow darker and darker in the aftermath of the Beijing and London games.
This past week I spoke to Raf Korkowski, about some of the recent developments regarding Olympic Weightlifting in Rio. Raf is the head coach of my local weightlifting club here in Nanaimo - the Hercules Weightlifting Club, which has been functioning as the largest weightlifting club on the island since 2015.
From 2002-2005 Raf Korkowski, originally of Poland, represented the Canadian National team at the 2003 World University Championships in Italy, 2003 World Championships in Vancouver, Pan American Championships in 2004 and 2005, 2004 Titan Games in USA, and was an alternate for the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece. Do you know when the first kettlebell sport meet in Canada was held? Ballistic Strength did some digging. On the southern tip of Toronto, Ontario’s Portuguese district, in the downtown west end, a Crossfit Box by the name of Academy of Lions held a kettlebell sport clinic in May of 2010. It was there that Boris Terzic and Eric St-Onge, two pupils of WKC founder Valery Fedorenko, took their obsession and shared it with their fellow countrymen. Following shortly thereafter, Boris Terzic, with the assistance of Shawn Mozen from Agatsu, put on the first Kettlebell Sport Meet in Canada, on July 17th, 2010. Competitors included Ryan Kennedy of the Toronto Kettlebell Club and Fighting Arts Collective, IUKL Judge and Veteran Lifter Mike Sherman - a former guest on this show, and longtime competitor Estella Hom. Never having organized an event quite like it before, Boris had his doubts. Only 1 lifter was registered just 2-weeks prior to the meet, and it seemed as though history might not happen after all, but a little bit of luck and word of mouth ensured a roster of 15 lifters. I’m joined on this episode by Eric St-Onge, a former competitive KB Sport athlete and North American record holder in the 32kg jerk at 101 reps. Eric hung up his lifting shoes, and is currently working has as a chiropractor at FITS Toronto, the official Sport Science facility of the TO Argonauts, as well as serving as a Sports Sciences Resident at Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College. Eric may have been absent from Canadian KB Sport as of late, but rumour has it we may just see him grace the platform by Feb of 2017. Eric had lots to share - his own personal triumphs and tragedies, and even some tips that may boost your kb game.

BSN Radio_Ep. 017 - The Problem with Chasing Rank in Kettlebell Sport w/ Charlie Fornelli
Ranking Systems. In kettlebell sport we have a ranking system. Not quite like the military - and you won’t see a Rank 3 fetching coffee for a Master of Sport. No, it’s more like martial arts. Our ‘Master of Sport’ rank is a lot like a black belt, but without ability to single-handedly subdue a room full of would-be assassins.
Of course, much like blackbelts, there are many Masters of Sport.
In fact, I’ve read some estimates as high as 350,000 black belts working in the U.S. Then again, the World Registry of Black Belts, who attempt to tease out the pay-for Black Belts, lists just over 400 names across North and South America’s.
There are many with the rank, but fighters are also ranked against each other. Most MMA sites host or produce their own pound-for-pound best fighter lists, many of which listing who they believe to be the top 10 fighters in the world. But like McLeod would say, there can be only one.
In kettlebell sport we all have equal opportunity to achieve rank without resistance. But to be a champion you have to dig a bit deeper, and go head to head with your peers (or perhaps, your former idols). It’s true - achieving rank can be a very intrinsic process, a way of measuring personal progress, but at every rung of the ladder you also have the opportunity to make your mark - to stand out amongst the other rank and filers. Sure you can hold the rank, but can you beat everyone else in the division? You may look at that proposition as being motivated more by status than personal progress - but could chasing rank ultimately be holding you back? It might be.

BSN Radio_Ep.015 - Abigail Johnston, Mike Sherman, IUKL Judging, Are You a Wiggler? Chalk or Not?
The first episode of 2016! I interview 63/68kg kettlebell lifter Abigail Johnston of Team Scotland, as well as USA veteran lifter and IUKL judge Mike Sherman. I tackle the tricky topic of legal fixation, plus the results of my 2015 online poll: Chalk or Not?
BSN Radio_Ep. 014 - Canadian Professional Kettlebell Sport Athlete Kathryn Golbeck #IUKL2015
Kathryn Golbeck competed in the 68kg Women’s Professional Snatch category, finishing with a score of 82 repetitions. Additionally, Kathryn competed as a veteran in the 40-44 age group, where she snatched the 16kg bell at breakneck speed to secure 211 reps.
These may sound like great numbers, and certainly they merit admiration, but it was clear from the sidelines that Kathryn’s professional snatch set wasn’t going as planned. In addition to switching hands early, it appeared that Kathryn’s ability to secure her grip on the kettlebell with each consecutive rep was waning. At just over 6-minutes of work, Kathryn stopped her set, despite showing relatively no visible signs of fatigue.
I caught up with Kathryn after her set, and it was clear that she was unhappy with her numbers, but her frustration seemed to stem more from confusion - she remarked a slipperiness of the handle, and repeated that she just didn’t know what happened. If you’ve followed Kathryn’s progress over the last year, these remarks would come as no surprise.
On Oct. 31, twenty-five days out from Worlds, Kathryn posted the results of her most recent 24kg snatch set up to that point - 111 reps in 8 minutes. Five days prior to that she posted an impressive video documenting a 150 rep snatch set with the 22kg bell. More impressive still, perhaps was a video posted Oct. 22, just 4 days earlier, of her cracking 200 reps with the 20kg bell.
Followers of the Okanagan Kettlebell Club FaceBook group would likely agree that Kathryn is one of the most disciplined and dedicated kettlebell sport athletes in North America today. She’s also one of the most down to Earth and humble competitors Ive interviewed.
The following was recorded at the 2015 IUKL World Kettlebell Championships in Dublin, Ireland.

BSN Radio_Ep. 010 - It's about the journey, not the gym. An interview with kettlebell and movement specialist, Steve Cotter.
On this episode I am pleased to welcome to the show somewhat of a kettlebell mogul in the North American Kettlebell landscape. Non-European kettlebell enthusiasts such as myself know Steve Cotter as the founder of the International Kettlebell and Fitness Federation (IKFF), an organization that promotes the practice of kettlebell training as a means to express its greater focus of integrated mind/body development. The IKFF is a transcontinental community of unique but unified individuals whose collective distinctiveness resonates through Steve, a man passionate about finding balance in both training and life.
In this episode we ask questions like: Is there confusion in the world of fitness? Does soccer-mom or desk-jockey dad really need Olympic Weightlifting or gymnastics to be healthy? Is social-media making “the sport of fitness” out to be more than it is? Are we inventing new sports just because we lost our edge, or because there’s always someone better? Has fitness or your own physical prowess become the centre-piece of your existence, and if so why? And if so, how will you define who you are when you lose your ability to demonstrate this physicality?

BSN Radio_Ep.007 - Misty Shearer on KB Sport in Canada, 2015 CKA Nationals, and mental toughness
"It's not the Olympics, and you're not gonna die!" - competition advice from Misty Shearer.
On this episode I get in depth with Canadian Kettlebell Alliance representative and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black-belt Misty Shearer. Some know Misty as a former Canadian military police officer and tough as nails martial artist, where as others know Misty simply as a no BS, pull no punches physical trainer and kettlebell sport coach out of Edmonton, Alberta. Regardless, Misty Shearer is one of the most recognizable names in Canadian Kettlebell Sport, as well as one of its most decorated athletes.
BSN Radio_Ep. 006 - Interview with Steven Khuong, CSCS, Master Coach at Ice Chamber Athletic Performance Training
